Evaluation of zirconia, thoria and zirconium diboride for advanced resistojet use
A literature survey was conducted to collect material properties data on all advanced high temperature materials. Three of these, Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2, ThO2, and ZrB2 with additives of C and SiC were selected for further study. Stabilized ZrO2 and ThO2 were found to have higher temperature oxidation resistance than any metal and great potential for use in advanced biowaste resistojets. ZrO2 has a lower electrical resistivity and sublimation and a higher creep endurance strength. ZrO2 and ThO2 tubular heat exchangers, electrically heated indirectly, were evaluated in short tests to about 1900 K in flowing CO2. ZrO2 was subjected to N2, H2, H2O and vacuum as well. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence analyses were made. The metal-to-ceramic seal technology for ZrO2 and ThO2 was developed using chemical vapor deposition of tantalum for metallizing and 82 Au - 18 Ni filler braze
Measurement of the temperature of an ultracold ion source using time-dependent electric fields
We report on a measurement of the characteristic temperature of an ultracold
rubidium ion source, in which a cloud of laser-cooled atoms is converted to
ions by photo-ionization. Extracted ion pulses are focused on a detector with a
pulsed-field technique. The resulting experimental spot sizes are compared to
particle-tracking simulations, from which a source temperature
mK and the corresponding transversal reduced emittance m rad are determined. We find that this result is
likely limited by space charge forces even though the average number of ions
per bunch is 0.022.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure
Is a Trapped One-Dimensional Bose Gas a Luttinger Liquid?
The low-energy fluctuations of a trapped, interacting quasi one-dimensional
Bose gas are studied. Our considerations apply to experiments with highly
anisotropic traps. We show that under suitable experimental conditions the
system can be described as a Luttinger liquid. This implies that the
correlation function of the bosons decays algebraically preventing
Bose-Einstein condensation. At significantly lower temperatures a finite size
gap destroys the Luttinger liquid picture and Bose-Einstein condensation is
again possible.Comment: 4 pages (revtex), 1 figure (eps file
Four-Hundred-and-Ninety-Million-Year Record of Bacteriogenic Iron Oxide Precipitation at Sea-Floor Hydrothermal Vents
Fe oxide deposits are commonly found at hydrothermal vent sites at mid-ocean ridge and back-arc sea floor spreading centers, seamounts associated with these spreading centers, and intra-plate seamounts, and can cover extensive areas of the seafloor. These deposits can be attributed to several abiogenic processes and commonly contain micron-scale filamentous textures. Some filaments are cylindrical casts of Fe oxyhydroxides formed around bacterial cells and are thus unquestionably biogenic. The filaments have distinctive morphologies very like structures formed by neutrophilic Fe oxidizing bacteria. It is becoming increasingly apparent that Fe oxidizing bacteria have a significant role in the formation of Fe oxide deposits at marine hydrothermal vents. The presence of Fe oxide filaments in Fe oxides is thus of great potential as a biomarker for Fe oxidizing bacteria in modern and ancient marine hydrothermal vent deposits. The ancient analogues of modern deep-sea hydrothermal Fe oxide deposits are jaspers. A number of jaspers, ranging in age from the early Ordovician to late Eocene, contain abundant Fe oxide filamentous textures with a wide variety of morphologies. Some of these filaments are like structures formed by modern Fe oxidizing bacteria. Together with new data from the modern TAG site, we show that there is direct evidence for bacteriogenic Fe oxide precipitation at marine hydrothermal vent sites for at least the last 490 Ma of the Phanerozoic
Modal Ω-Logic: Automata, Neo-Logicism, and Set-Theoretic Realism
This essay examines the philosophical significance of -logic in Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with choice (ZFC). The duality between coalgebra and algebra permits Boolean-valued algebraic models of ZFC to be interpreted as coalgebras. The modal profile of -logical validity can then be countenanced within a coalgebraic logic, and -logical validity can be defined via deterministic automata. I argue that the philosophical significance of the foregoing is two-fold. First, because the epistemic and modal profiles of -logical validity correspond to those of second-order logical consequence, -logical validity is genuinely logical, and thus vindicates a neo-logicist conception of mathematical truth in the set-theoretic multiverse. Second, the foregoing provides a modal-computational account of the interpretation of mathematical vocabulary, adducing in favor of a realist conception of the cumulative hierarchy of sets
Quantum gates using electronic and nuclear spins of Yb in a magnetic field gradient
An efficient scheme is proposed to carry out gate operations on an array of
trapped Yb ions, based on a previous proposal using both electronic and
nuclear degrees of freedom in a magnetic field gradient. For this purpose we
consider the Paschen-Back regime (strong magnetic field) and employ a
high-field approximation in this treatment. We show the possibility to suppress
the unwanted coupling between the electron spins by appropriately swapping
states between electronic and nuclear spins. The feasibility of generating the
required high magnetic field is discussed
Empowering Teachers, Triggering Change: A Case Study of Teacher Training through Action Research
The present article sets out to validate small-scale research projects as a tool to foster the integration of theory and practice as well as the development of a refl ective mindset in trainees in teacher training courses. This case study of the process followed by an experienced teacher carrying out research as part of a Master’s degree in Teaching English traces the student’s learning during her research process through an analysis of her interactions, both oral and written, with the thesis supervisor, as well as of the materials created for the pedagogical intervention planned and the data collection carried out as part of the action research process. This reconstruction of the trainee’s developing understanding while working on her MA thesis reveals that learning does take place and is brought about by a mixture of different factors, such as the relation established between the theoretical concepts studied in the program and the actual teaching practice, the detachment brought about by the need to collect data and the interaction with the supervisor. Carrying out a research project also helps the trainee to reflect on her own practice, and thus establish a reflective mindset.
