    Holocene geochemical footprint from Semiarid alpine wetlands in southern Spain

    Here we provide the geochemical dataset that our research group has collected after 10 years of investigation in the Sierra Nevada National Park in southern Spain. These data come from Holocene sedimentary records from four alpine sites (ranging from ∼2500 to ∼3000 masl): two peatlands and two shallow lakes. Different kinds of organic and inorganic analyses have been conducted. The organic matter in the bulk sediment was characterised using elemental measurements and isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS). Leaf waxes in the sediment were investigated by means of chromatography with flame-ionization detection and mass spectrometry (GC-FID, GC-MS). Major, minor and trace elements of the sediments were analysed with atomic absorption (AAS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), as well as X-ray scanning fluorescence. These data can be reused by environmental researchers and soil and land managers of the Sierra Nevada National Park and similar regions to identify the effect of natural climate change, overprinted by human impact, as well as to project new management policies in similar protected areas.Universidad de Granada.     Por uma Agenda de Pesquisa sobre Deficiência para Colômbia

    Resumen Objetivo: describir el proceso y los resultados de la primera fase del proyecto Construcción de una agenda de investigación en discapacidad para Colombia. Metodología: se elaboró una primera aproximación a la agenda de investigación en discapacidad a través de un proceso participativo desarrollado en seis momentos: 1) Identificación y convocatoria de actores a nivel regional y nacional; 2) Preparación de una propuesta inicial de grandes áreas y temas prioritarios en la agenda; 3) Mesas de regionales para la identificación de necesidades y capacidades de investigación, y discusión de la propuesta inicial; 4) Recategorización a partir de los aportes regionales; 5) Mesa nacional para la concertación de áreas prioritarias y categorías transversales de investigación; 6) Socialización. Resultados: se configura una propuesta de agenda orientada por cuatro categorías transversales y con cinco áreas temáticas. Se avanza en la aproximación a subtemas, que aún requieren mayor desarrollo. Esta propuesta se constituye en una base que debe ser complementada y validada en una fase posterior del proyecto. Conclusiones: una agenda de investigación en discapacidad que recoja las necesidades y capacidades de los diversos actores involucrados en la generación y apropiación del conocimiento en dicho campo, apunta al mejor aprovechamiento y al desarrollo de las capacidades y los recursos destinados a la investigación, así como a investigaciones transdiciplinarias que contribuyan a la toma de decisiones políticas y a la transformación de las realidades sociales del colectivo de personas con discapacidad y sus familias en el país y sus territorios.Abstract Objective: to describe the process and results of the first stage in the project Development of a research agenda on disability for Colombia. Methodology: a first approach to the agenda of research on disability was developed through a participative process with six moments: 1) Identification and call for regional and national actors; 2) Preparation of an initial proposal including main areas and priority topics on the agenda; 3) Regional boards for the identification of research needs and abilities, and discussion of the initial proposal; 4) Reclassification from the contributions of the regional boards; 5) National board for the coordination of priority areas and cross-cutting research categories; 6) socialization. Results: the study configures and agenda proposal oriented by four cross-sectional categories and five thematic areas. There was progress approaching subtopics, which still require more development. This proposal is constituted on a base that must be complemented and validated in a later stage of the project. Conclusions: a research agenda on disability that collects the needs and abilities of the various actors involved in the generation and dissemination of knowledge in this field aims to an improvement in the usage and development of abilities and resources destined to research, and to transdisciplinary research that contributes to the political decision making and the transformation of the social realities of the group of persons with disabilities and their families in the country and in their territories

    Vegetation and geochemical responses to Holocene rapid climate change in the Sierra Nevada (southeastern Iberia): the Laguna Hondera record

    High-altitude peat bogs and lacustrine records are very sensitive to climate changes and atmospheric dust input. Recent studies have shown a close relationship between regional climate aridity and enhanced eolian input to lake sediments. However, changes in regional-scale dust fluxes due to climate variability at short scales and how alpine environments were impacted by climatic- and human-induced environmental changes are not completely understood.Here we present a multi-proxy (palynological, geochemical and magnetic susceptibility) lake sediment record of climate variability in the Sierra Nevada (southeastern Iberian Peninsula) over the Holocene. Magnetic susceptibility and geochemical proxies obtained from the high mountain lake record of Laguna Hondera evidence humid conditions during the early Holocene, while a trend towards more arid conditions is recognized since  ∼ 7000&thinsp;cal&thinsp;yr&thinsp;BP, with enhanced Saharan eolian dust deposition until the present. This trend towards enhanced arid conditions was modulated by millennial-scale climate variability. Relative humid conditions occurred during the Iberian Roman Humid Period (2600–1450&thinsp;cal&thinsp;yr&thinsp;BP) and predominantly arid conditions occurred during the Dark Ages and the Medieval Climate Anomaly (1450–650&thinsp;cal&thinsp;yr&thinsp;BP). The Little Ice Age (650–150&thinsp;cal&thinsp;yr&thinsp;BP) is characterized in the Laguna Hondera record by an increase in runoff and a minimum in eolian input. In addition, we further suggest that human impact in the area is noticed through the record of Olea cultivation, Pinus reforestation and Pb pollution during the Industrial Period (150&thinsp;cal&thinsp;yr&thinsp;BP–present). Furthermore, we estimated that the correlation between Zr and Ca concentrations stands for Saharan dust input to the Sierra Nevada lake records. These assumptions support that present-day biochemical observations, pointing to eolian input as the main inorganic nutrient source for oligotrophic mountain lakes, are comparable to the past record of eolian supply to these high-altitude lakes.</p

    Paleoclimate reconstruction of the last 36 kyr based on branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers in the Padul palaeolake record (Sierra Nevada, southern Iberian Peninsula)

    Quantitative continental climate reconstructions covering the last glacial cycle from the Iberian Peninsula are scarce. In order to fill this gap, we obtained for the first time a high-resolution mean annual air temperature (MAAT) record based on the distribution of specific bacterial membrane lipids (i.e., branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers; brGDGTs) from the last 36.0-4.7 kyr palaeolake record recovered by the Padul-15-05 sedimentary core (Padul, Sierra Nevada, southern Iberia).     Hydrological influence on the evolution of a subtropical mangrove ecosystem during the late Holocene from Babitonga Bay, Brazil

    Mangroves are key ecosystems which respond to global changes in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. We describe late Holocene mangroves that established close to the southernmost limit (28°S) for this type of ecosystem in South America. Our findings are based on a C dated core obtained from Babitonga Bay, Santa Catarina State, Brazil (26°12′S, 48°33′W). Analysis of palynology, sedimentary facies, isotopic and elemental data shows that mangrove establishment took place ~500 yrs. B.C.E., following an increase in humidity, and expanded further during the Roman Warm Period and at the end of Dark Age Cold Period. Mangrove and precipitation proxies records appear to be sensitive to rainfall patterns imposed both by the expansion/retraction of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and also the interaction with the South Atlantic Subtropical Anticyclone which affects coastal region due to sea surface temperature variations.The authors thank the Coastal Dynamic Laboratory (LADIC-UFPA) , C-14 Laboratory of the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA-USP) , University of Joinville (UNIVILLE) and Radiocarbon Laboratory (LAC-UFF) for all infrastructure and support.     Payments for ecosystem services in the tropics: a closer look at effectiveness and equity

    We undertake a review of academic literature that examines the effectiveness and equity-related performance of PES initiatives targeting biodiversity conservation in tropical and sub-tropical countries. We investigate the key features of such analyses as regards their analytical and methodological approach and we identify emerging lessons from PES practice, leading to a new suggested research agenda. Our results indicate that analyses of PES effectiveness have to date focused on either ecosystem service provision or habitat proxies, with only half of them making explicit assessment of additionality and most describing that payments have been beneficial for land cover and biodiversity. Studies evaluating the impact of PES on livelihoods suggest more negative outcomes, with an uneven treatment of the procedural and distributive considerations of scheme design and payment distribution, and a large heterogeneity of evaluative frameworks. We propose an agenda for future PES research based on the emerging interest in assessing environmental outcomes more rigorously and documenting social impacts in a more comparative and contextually situated form

    Clinical Outcomes of a Zika Virus Mother-Child Pair Cohort in Spain

    BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with congenital microcephaly and other neurodevelopmental abnormalities. There is little published research on the effect of maternal ZIKV infection in a non-endemic European region. We aimed to describe the outcomes of pregnant travelers diagnosed as ZIKV-infected in Spain, and their exposed children. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study of nine referral hospitals enrolled pregnant women (PW) who travelled to endemic areas during their pregnancy or the two previous months, or those whose sexual partners visited endemic areas in the previous 6 months. Infants of ZIKV-infected mothers were followed for about two years. RESULTS: ZIKV infection was diagnosed in 163 PW; 112 (70%) were asymptomatic and 24 (14.7%) were confirmed cases. Among 143 infants, 14 (9.8%) had adverse outcomes during follow-up; three had a congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), and 11 other potential Zika-related outcomes. The overall incidence of CZS was 2.1% (95%CI: 0.4-6.0%), but among infants born to ZIKV-confirmed mothers, this increased to 15.8% (95%CI: 3.4-39.6%). CONCLUSIONS: A nearly 10% overall risk of neurologic and hearing adverse outcomes was found in ZIKV-exposed children born to a ZIKV-infected traveler PW. Longer-term follow-up of these children is needed to assess whether there are any later-onset manifestations
