Analysis of systems hardware flown on LDEF. Results of the systems special investigation group
The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) was retrieved after spending 69 months in low Earth orbit (LEO). LDEF carried a remarkable variety of mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical systems, subsystems, and components. The Systems Special Investigation Group (Systems SIG) was formed to investigate the effects of the long duration exposure to LEO on systems related hardware and to coordinate and collate all systems analysis of LDEF hardware. Discussed here is the status of the LDEF Systems SIG investigation through the end of 1991

Direct Evidence of a SlowâSlip Transient Modulating the Spatiotemporal and FrequencyâMagnitude Earthquake Distribution: Insights From the Armutlu Peninsula, Northwestern Turkey
Earthquakes and slowâslip events interact, however, detailed studies investigating their interplay are still limited. We generate the highest resolution microseismicity catalog to date for the northern Armutlu Peninsula in a âź1âyear period to perform a detailed seismicity distribution analysis and correlate the results with a local, geodetically observed slowâslip transient within the same period. Seismicity shows a transition of clusterâtype behavior from swarmâlike to burstâlike, accompanied by an increasing relative proportion of clustered (nonâPoissonian) relative to background (Poissonian) seismicity and gradually decreasing bâvalue as the geodetically observed slowâslip transient ends. The observed slowâslip transient decay correlates with gradually increasing effectiveâstressâdrop values. The observed correlation between the bâvalue and geodetic transient highlights the influence of aseismic deformation on seismic deformation and the impact of slowâslip transients on local seismic hazard
Gas and seismicity within the Istanbul seismic gap
Understanding micro-seismicity is a critical question for earthquake hazard
assessment. Since the devastating earthquakes of Izmit and Duzce in 1999, the
seismicity along the submerged section of North Anatolian Fault within the Sea
of Marmara (comprising the âIstanbul seismic gapâ) has been extensively
studied in order to infer its mechanical behaviour (creeping vs locked). So
far, the seismicity has been interpreted only in terms of being tectonic-
driven, although the Main Marmara Fault (MMF) is known to strike across
multiple hydrocarbon gas sources. Here, we show that a large number of the
aftershocks that followed the M 5.1 earthquake of July, 25th 2011 in the
western Sea of Marmara, occurred within a zone of gas overpressuring in the
1.5â5âkm depth range, from where pressurized gas is expected to migrate along
the MMF, up to the surface sediment layers. Hence, gas-related processes
should also be considered for a complete interpretation of the micro-
seismicity (~Mâ<â3) within the Istanbul offshore domain
Utilization and control of ecological interactions in polymicrobial infections and community-based microbial cell factories
Microbial activities are most often shaped by interactions between co-existing microbes within mixed-species communities. Dissection of the molecular mechanisms of species interactions within communities is a central issue in microbial ecology, and our ability to engineer and control microbial communities depends, to a large extent, on our knowledge of these interactions. This review highlights the recent advances regarding molecular characterization of microbe-microbe interactions that modulate community structure, activity, and stability, and aims to illustrate how these findings have helped us reach an engineering-level understanding of microbial communities in relation to both human health and industrial biotechnology

Analysis of Pools of Targeted Salmonella Deletion Mutants Identifies Novel Genes Affecting Fitness during Competitive Infection in Mice
Pools of mutants of minimal complexity but maximal coverage of genes of interest facilitate screening for genes under selection in a particular environment. We constructed individual deletion mutants in 1,023 Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium genes, including almost all genes found in Salmonella but not in related genera. All mutations were confirmed simultaneously using a novel amplification strategy to produce labeled RNA from a T7 RNA polymerase promoter, introduced during the construction of each mutant, followed by hybridization of this labeled RNA to a Typhimurium genome tiling array. To demonstrate the ability to identify fitness phenotypes using our pool of mutants, the pool was subjected to selection by intraperitoneal injection into BALB/c mice and subsequent recovery from spleens. Changes in the representation of each mutant were monitored using T7 transcripts hybridized to a novel inexpensive minimal microarray. Among the top 120 statistically significant spleen colonization phenotypes, more than 40 were mutations in genes with no previously known role in this model. Fifteen phenotypes were tested using individual mutants in competitive assays of intraperitoneal infection in mice and eleven were confirmed, including the first two examples of attenuation for sRNA mutants in Salmonella. A Model of Salmonella Colitis with Features of Diarrhea in SLC11A1 Wild-Type Mice
Background: Mice do not get diarrhea when orally infected with S. enterica, but pre-treatment with oral aminoglycosides makes them susceptible to Salmonella colitis. However, genetically susceptible ItyS mice (Nramp1 G169D allele) die from systemic infection before they develop diarrhea, so a new model is needed to study the pathogenesis of diarrhea. We pretreated ItyR mice (Nramp1 G169) with oral kanamycin prior to infecting them with virulent S. Typhimurium strain 14028s in order to study Salmonella-induced diarrhea. We used both a visual scoring system and the measurement of fecal water content to measure diarrhea. BALB/c.D2 Nramp1 congenic started losing weight 5 days post-infection and they began to die from colitis 10â14 days after infection. A SPI-1 (invA) mutant caused cecal, but not colonic inflammation and did not cause diarrhea. A phoP- mutant did not cause manifestations of diarrhea in either normal or NADPHdeficient (gp91 phox) mice. However, strain 14028s caused severe colitis and diarrhea in gp91 phox-deficient mice on an ItyR background. pmr A and F mutants, which are less virulent in orally infected BALB/c mice, were fully virulent in this model of colitis. Conclusions: S. enterica must be able to invade the colonic epithelium and to persist in the colon in order to cause colitis with manifestations of diarrhea.
