    Formative assessment of inquiry skills for Responsible Research and Innovation using 3D Virtual Reality Glasses and Face Recognition

    This paper examines the experience and views of learners on technological innovations with a novel pedagogical model to enhance formative online assessment of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) skills with e-authentication. The authors developed the OER “virtual classroom” app based on the famous “Bletchley Park” and also an activity for learners exploring this museum in pairs with individual assessment. Participants practiced RRI skills and shared their views about their VR experience in an e-assessment activity with e-authentication through the TeSLA face recognition system. Participants were students from the UK and Brazil. Our research questions include whether the 3DVRG activities in pairs in the same physical environment support peer-learning with assessment-in-context. Findings revealed that activities that enabled physical interactions in pairs enriched the virtual interactions in the museum. The combination of authentic scenario, interactive tasks and assessment-in-context helped learners acquire new information and connect with existing knowledge. These interactions enhanced the immersive learning experience, particularly for those who did not experienced sickness with 3DVRG. Three types of interactions with the virtual space, their peer and the topic respectively enabled the virtual, social and cognitive presence

    Lower hybrid counter-current drive experiment in JET

    12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France)Lower hybrid current drive has been demonstrated to be an efficient tool to modify the current profile in order to access to high energy confinement regimes. Counter-current drive could be an alternative scenario provided the current drive efficiency is not too small when fast electrons flow in the opposite way to the DC electric field. By reversing the toroidal field (Bt=-3.1T) and the plasma current (Ip=-1.45MA), counter current drive with lower hybrid waves has been investigated for the first time in JET. The experiments were carried out at low plasma density ( =1.0 x1019m-3 , ne(0)=1.6 x 1019m-3) with 2.9MW of lower hybrid power. The CRONOS code[1], which couples the diffusion equations to a 2-D equilibrium code, has been used to estimate the RF driven current. Runs indicate that loop voltage and internal inductance are best simulated with a current drive efficiency of –1.0 x 1019 A.W-1.m-2 with a peaked central LH power deposition deduced from DELPHINE[2]. This efficiency is indeed very close to the one found for co-LHCD at similar plasma current and density. Current profile evolves from a hollow profile (with a minimum at r/a ~0) and a maximum at r/a~0.4-0.5) to a rather flat profile (up to r/a=0.3)

    Valorization of Moroccan olive stones by using it in particleboard panels

    The main objective of this work was to find new applications to valorize olive stones (endocarp and seed). In order to improve knowledge on olive stones, the phenolic compounds concentration of three varieties of Moroccan olive trees: Moroccan Picholine, Menara and Haouzian were studied. Olive stones of three varieties were characterized by Fourier Transform Mid Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-MIR). Total phenolic compounds are quantified after solid-liquid extraction by an assay of Folin-Ciocalteu. Moroccan Picholine stones (11.32 mg GAE/g DM) have a higher content of total phenolic compounds than Haouzia stones (4.55 mg GAE/g DM) and Menara stones (3.56 mg GAE/g DM). Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that up to 195 degrees C; there is no degradation of the stones. The biocide performance on agar-agar was tested with decay fungi. Biodegradation studies show that the most interesting results are obtained with Moroccan Picholine stones. The presence of Moroccan Picholine in a particleboard panels improves the total resistance of the particleboard panels against both Coriolus versicolor and Coniophora puteana rot fungi

    Airways are continually exposed to multiple inhaled oxidants and protect themselves with cellular and extracellular antioxidants throughout the epithelial lining fluid and tissues. Oxidative stress, resulting from the increased oxidative burden and decreased level of antioxidant proteins, is involved in cellular and tissue damage related to the pathogenesis of many acute and chronic respiratory diseases. Evidence suggested that nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a transcription factor that controls antioxidant response element (ARE)-regulated antioxidant and cytoprotective genes has an essential protective role in the lungs against oxidative airway diseases. Therefore, Nrf2 promises to be an attractive therapeutic target for intervention and prevention strategies in respiratory diseases. We have reviewed major findings on the mechanisms of lung protection against oxidative stress by Nrf2 and the current literature suggesting that Nrf2 is a valuable therapeutic target

    Self-consistent simulation of plasma scenarios for ITER using a combination of 1.5D transport codes and free-boundary equilibrium codes

    Self-consistent transport simulation of ITER scenarios is a very important tool for the exploration of the operational space and for scenario optimisation. It also provides an assessment of the compatibility of developed scenarios (which include fast transient events) with machine constraints, in particular with the poloidal field (PF) coil system, heating and current drive (H&CD), fuelling and particle and energy exhaust systems. This paper discusses results of predictive modelling of all reference ITER scenarios and variants using two suite of linked transport and equilibrium codes. The first suite consisting of the 1.5D core/2D SOL code JINTRAC [1] and the free boundary equilibrium evolution code CREATE-NL [2,3], was mainly used to simulate the inductive D-T reference Scenario-2 with fusion gain Q=10 and its variants in H, D and He (including ITER scenarios with reduced current and toroidal field). The second suite of codes was used mainly for the modelling of hybrid and steady state ITER scenarios. It combines the 1.5D core transport code CRONOS [4] and the free boundary equilibrium evolution code DINA-CH [5].Comment: 23 pages, 18 figure

    Several convergent destructive mechanisms such as oxidative stress, alveolar cell apoptosis, extracellular matrix proteolysis and chronic inflammation contribute to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) development. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress contributes to the pathophysiology of COPD, particularly during exacerbations. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2), a transcription factor expressed predominantly in epithelium and alveolar macrophages, has an essential protective role in the lungs through the activation of antioxidant response element-regulated antioxidant and cytoprotective genes. Animal models and human studies have identified NRF2 and several NRF2 target genes as a protective system against inflammation and oxidative stress from cigarette smoke, a major causative factor in COPD development. Hence, NRF2 targeting might provide clinical benefit by reducing both oxidative stress and inflammation in COPD

    Negotiating the inhuman: Bakhtin, materiality and the instrumentalization of climate change

    The article argues that the work of literary theorist Mikhail M. Bakhtin presents a starting point for thinking about the instrumentalization of climate change. Bakhtin’s conceptualization of human–world relationships, encapsulated in the concept of ‘cosmic terror’, places a strong focus on our perception of the ‘inhuman’. Suggesting a link between the perceived alienness and instability of the world and in the exploitation of the resulting fear of change by political and religious forces, Bakhtin asserts that the latter can only be resisted if our desire for a false stability in the world is overcome. The key to this overcoming of fear, for him, lies in recognizing and confronting the worldly relations of the human body. This consciousness represents the beginning of one’s ‘deautomatization’ from following established patterns of reactions to predicted or real changes. In the vein of several theorists and artists of his time who explored similar ‘deautomatization’ strategies – examples include Shklovsky’s ‘ostranenie’, Brecht’s ‘Verfremdung’, Artaud’s emotional ‘cruelty’ and Bataille’s ‘base materialism’ – Bakhtin proposes a more playful and widely accessible experimentation to deconstruct our ‘habitual picture of the world’. Experimentation is envisioned to take place across the material and the textual to increase possibilities for action. Through engaging with Bakhtin’s ideas, this article seeks to draw attention to relations between the imagination of the world and political agency, and the need to include these relations in our own experiments with creating climate change awareness

    A FAIR based approach to data sharing in Europe

    The European fusion research activities have, over recent decades, generated a vast and varied set of data. The volume and diversity of the data that need to be catalogued and annotated make the task of organising and making the data available within a broader environment very challenging. Nevertheless, there are strong scientific drivers as well as incentives and mandates from national research agencies suggesting that a more coherent approach to data referencing, dissemination and sharing would provide strong benefits to the fusion research community and beyond. Here, we discuss the technical requirements and developments needed to transition the current, and future, range of fusion research data to an open and Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable data sharing structure guided by the principle \u27as open as possible, as closed as necessary\u27. Here we propose a set of recommendations and technical implementations needed to form a European data sharing environment for the fusion research programmes. Consistency with the emerging IMAS (ITER Integrated Modelling and Analysis Suite) infrastructure is considered to facilitate future deployments
