    The role of nailfold capillaroscopy in interstitial lung diseases - Can it differentiate idiopathic cases from collagen tissue disease associated interstitial lung diseases?

    Introduction: Nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that is mostly used for early diagnosis of collagen tissue diseases (CTDs). We aimed to evaluate whether NFC findings could be a clue for discriminating idiopathic interstitial lung diseases (ILD) from CTD associated ILDs (CTD-ILD). Additionally it was aimed to determine whether NFC could be helpful in discriminating usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern from non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) pattern. Materials and Methods: We grouped patients into three main groups: 15 CTD-ILD, 18 idiopathic ILD, and 17 patients in the control group. The CTD-ILD group was split into two subgroups: 8 patients with Sjögren’s syndrome (SJS)-associated ILD and 7 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)-associated ILD. The idiopathic-ILD group consisted of 10 idiopathic NSIP and 8 IPF patients. The control group consisted of 10 SJS and 7 RA patients without lung disease. None of the patients were on acute exacerbation at the time of examination, and none had Reynaud’s phenomenon. Results: Mean capillary density was significantly reduced only in the CTD-ILD group as compared to the control group (p= 0.006). In subgroup analysis, it was determined that RA-ILD, IPF, and SJSILD subgroups had more severe capillaroscopic abnormalities. Mean capillary density in patients with the UIP pattern was reduced compared to patients with the NSIP pattern and those in the control group; p values were 0.008 and < 0.001, respectively. Conclusion: This study is to be the first describing and comparing the nailfold capillaroscopic findings of patients with NSIP and UIP patterns. NFC findings can be helpful in discriminating UIP patterns from NSIP patterns. But to show its role in differentiating idiopathic disease, more studies with more patients are needed. © 2015, Ankara University. All rights reserved

    Transformations between WISE, 2MASS, SDSS and BVRI photometric systems: I. Transformation equations for dwarfs

    We present colour transformations for the conversion of the W1 and W2 magnitudes of WISE photometric system to the Johnson-Cousins' BVRI, SDSS (gri), and 2MASS (JHK_s) photometric systems, for dwarfs. The W3 and W4 magnitudes were not considered due to their insufficient signal to noise ratio (S/N). The coordinates of 825 dwarfs along with their BVRI, gri, and JHK_s data, taken from Bilir et al. (2008) were matched with the coordinates of stars in the preliminary data release of WISE (Wright et al., 2010) and a homogeneous dwarf sample with high S/N ratio have been obtained using the following constraints: 1) the data were dereddened, 2) giants were identified and excluded from the sample, 3) sample stars were selected according to data quality, 4) transformations were derived for sub samples of different metallicity range, and 5) transformations are two colour dependent. These colour transformations, coupled with known absolute magnitudes at shorter wavelenghts, can be used in space density evaluation for the Galactic (thin and thick) discs, at distances larger than the ones evaluated with JHK_s photometry.Comment: 16 pages, including 5 figures and 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Facial Expression Manipulation for Personalized Facial Action Estimation

    Limited sizes of annotated video databases of spontaneous facial expression, imbalanced action unit labels, and domain shift are three main obstacles in training models to detect facial actions and estimate their intensity. To address these problems, we propose an approach that incorporates facial expression generation for facial action unit intensity estimation. Our approach reconstructs the 3D shape of the face from each video frame, aligns the 3D mesh to a canonical view, and trains a GAN-based network to synthesize novel images with facial action units of interest. We leverage the synthetic images to achieve two goals: 1) generating AU-balanced databases, and 2) tackling domain shift with personalized networks. To generate a balanced database, we synthesize expressions with varying AU intensities and perform semantic resampling. Our experimental results on FERA17 show that networks trained on synthesized facial expressions outperform those trained on actual facial expressions and surpass current state-of-the-art approaches. To tackle domain shift, we propose personalizing pretrained networks. We generate synthetic expressions of each target subject with varying AU intensity labels and use the person-specific synthetic images to fine-tune pretrained networks. To evaluate performance of the personalized networks, we use DISFA and PAIN databases. Personalized networks, which require only a single image from each target subject to generate synthetic images, achieved significant improvement in generalizing to unseen domains

    Stronger prejudices are associated with decreased model-based control

    Background: Prejudices against minorities can be understood as habitually negative evaluations that are kept in spite of evidence to the contrary. Therefore, individuals with strong prejudices might be dominated by habitual or "automatic" reactions at the expense of more controlled reactions. Computational theories suggest individual differences in the balance between habitual/model-free and deliberative/model-based decision-making. Methods: 127 subjects performed the two Step task and completed the blatant and subtle prejudice scale. Results: By using analyses of choices and reaction times in combination with computational modeling, subjects with stronger blatant prejudices showed a shift away from model-based control. There was no association between these decision-making processes and subtle prejudices. Conclusion: These results support the idea that blatant prejudices toward minorities are related to a relative dominance of habitual decision-making. This finding has important implications for developing interventions that target to change prejudices across societies

    Turner syndrome and associated problems in turkish children: A multicenter study

    Objective: Turner syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal disorder caused by complete or partial X chromosome monosomy that manifests various clinical features depending on the karyotype and on the genetic background of affected girls. This study aimed to systematically investigate the key clinical features of TS in relationship to karyotype in a large pediatric Turkish patient population. Methods: Our retrospective study included 842 karyotype-proven TS patients aged 0-18 years who were evaluated in 35 different centers in Turkey in the years 2013-2014. Results: The most common karyotype was 45,X (50.7%), followed by 45,X/46,XX (10.8%), 46,X,i(Xq) (10.1%) and 45,X/46,X,i(Xq) (9.5%). Mean age at diagnosis was 10.2±4.4 years. The most common presenting complaints were short stature and delayed puberty. Among patients diagnosed before age one year, the ratio of karyotype 45,X was significantly higher than that of other karyotype groups. Cardiac defects (bicuspid aortic valve, coarctation of the aorta and aortic stenosi) were the most common congenital anomalies, occurring in 25% of the TS cases. This was followed by urinary system anomalies (horseshoe kidney, double collector duct system and renal rotation) detected in 16.3%. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis was found in 11.1% of patients, gastrointestinal abnormalities in 8.9%, ear nose and throat problems in 22.6%, dermatologic problems in 21.8% and osteoporosis in 15.3%. Learning difficulties and/or psychosocial problems were encountered in 39.1%. Insulin resistance and impaired fasting glucose were detected in 3.4% and 2.2%, respectively. Dyslipidemia prevalence was 11.4%. Conclusion: This comprehensive study systematically evaluated the largest group of karyotype-proven TS girls to date. The karyotype distribution, congenital anomaly and comorbidity profile closely parallel that from other countries and support the need for close medical surveillance of these complex patients throughout their lifespan. © Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology

    The principal properties of molibdenum-phosphate heteropolianions and their application as catalysts

    Polyoxometallates (POMs) are increasingly used as electrocatalysts for the determination of several types of species. Dawson and Keggin-type heteropoly anions are preferentially used in industry as catalysts. Properties of Dawson-type molybdophosphate heteropoly anions are discussed in the present review. Electrochemical behavior of Keggin- and Dawsontype molybdophosphate heteropoly anions has been reviewed. The oxidation-reduction potentials of electron reductions of the [P2Mo18O62] 6– anion in solutions with various pH and in different media are cited. Special focus is made on methods of designing of electrodes modified by POMs. The most common deposition techniques of POMs include chemisorption, electrodeposition, encapsulation in polymers or sol–gels, and formation of hybrid POM–organic species. Advantages and disadvantages of various techniques are discussed. Modified electrodes are characterized by electrochemical stability, shifting of characteristic peaks and sensitivity to pH change. Визначено характерні потенціали електронних переходів 18-МФА та їх залежність від рН у водних розчинах.     Saving endangered whales at no cost

Drastic overexploitation has driven this large, slow-swimming baleen whale to virtual extinction in Europe, while a small remnant population of ~350 individuals remains on the U.S. and Canadian east coast. Although this species has been protected for 70 years, recovery has been slight and extinction is still looming because of accidental mortality from shipstrikes and fishing gear (Figure 1A,B). Seventy five percent of appropriately photographed whales show evidence of entanglement, predominantly with lobster fishing gear, and this percentage has increased from 52% in the 1980s. At the same time, the U.S. lobster fishery is severely overexploited (the inshore fishing mortalities in the two main U.S. regions are 0.69 and 0.84, while 0.2 achieves maximum yield per recruit). We argue here that this endangered whale species can be protected from entanglement mortality, and the fishery can benefit simultaneously, by a large reduction of lobster traps used; a classic win–win situation.This work was supported by the Lenfest Foundation and NSERC
