Gluten - a nutritional enemy or indispensable diet ingredient?
Introduction: Gluten is a mixture of wheat, rye and barley storage proteins. These corps have provided human beings worldwide with energy and nutrients for centuries. However, an increase in the occurrence of symptoms after the consumption of gluten has been observed recently. Although celiac disease is an indication of strict adherence to the gluten-free diet (GFD), the popularity of GFD is growing among healthy people. The risks of unsupported gluten elimination should be assessed before the introduction of GFD.
Purpose: The study aims to define GFD and indicate who should follow the diet, as well as present difficulties concerning strict adherence to GFD and possible consequences of eliminating gluten on one’s own.
Description of the state of knowledge: Regarding the mechanism, in which the symptoms after gluten consumption develop, the following diseases have been distinguished: celiac disease (CD), wheat allergy and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Currently, the only indication of strict long-life adherence to GFD is CD. Such a restrictive approach may cause financial and social problems. Although the introduction of GFD improves the quality of life in CD patients, it does not lead to the immediate disappearance of the symptoms. Healthy people, who decide to eliminate gluten, should balance their diet carefully, as GFD might cause nutritional deficiencies and metabolic diseases.
Summary: Strict long-life adherence to GFD is indicated in CD. This treatment may be problematic, which often is not evident to people who eliminate gluten on their own. Unbalanced GFD can lead to nutritional deficiencies as well as metabolic diseases.
Preresearch of appropriate nutrition of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus
WSTĘP. Celem pracy była ocena sposobu odżywiania
dzieci z cukrzycą typu 1, z uwzględnieniem rozłożenia
i charakterystyki jakościowej spożywanych
posiłków w ciągu dnia.
MATERIAŁ I METODY. Badaniami objęto 42 dzieci
(12 chłopców i 30 dziewcząt) w wieku 7-18 lat z Poradni
Cukrzycowej dla Dzieci i Młodzieży Akademii
Medycznej w Gdańsku. Populację podzielono na dwie
grupy wiekowe: 7-12 lat, średnia wieku 9,3 roku
(12 pacjentów) oraz 13-18 lat, średnia 15,4 roku
(30 pacjentów). Przeprowadzono ankietę jakościową
zawierającą 12 pytań oraz dokonano pomiarów antropometrycznych
(wzrost i masa ciała).
WYNIKI. Stwierdzono, że grupa dzieci młodszych
spożywała właściwą liczbę posiłków dostosowanych
do insulinoterapii. Jednak często ich jakość odbiegała
od zaleceń. Zastrzeżenia budzi zbyt mały udział
warzyw w diecie oraz preferowany wybór serków
topionych i żółtych. Zwiększenie samodzielności
w okresie dojrzewania sprzyjało błędom dietetycznym.
WNIOSKI. Prawidłowe nawyki żywieniowe należy
wyrabiać w jak najwcześniejszym okresie życia i stale
je utrwalać.INTRODUCTION. The aim of the study was to assess
the nutrition of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus,
considering the quantity and quality of the meals
consumed during the day.
MATERIAL AND METHODS. The research was conducted
among 42 children (12 boys and 30 girls) at the
age of 7-18 years, the patients of Children Diabetes
Clinic of Medical Academy in Gdansk. The research
population has been divided into 2 groups: 7-12 years
old (average age 9.3 years - 12 patients) and
13-18 years old (15.4 years - 30 patients). The research
was based on the survey consisting 12 questions
as well as on the anthropometric measurements
such as the height and weight of the patients.
RESULTS. The research lead to the conclusion that
the group of the younger children has eaten the
proper quantity of the food recommended during
the insulin therapy. However, the quality of meals
was often not fulfilling the recommendation. There
was the relevant small amount of vegetables in the
diet while the preferences of soft and hard cheeses
consuming occurred.
All in all, the diet mistakes were caused by increased
self-reliance of the patients during their adolescence.
CONCLUSIONS. The proper diet habits ought to be
developed from the early years and be constantly
sustained
Preliminary evaluation of application of a 3-dimensional network structure of siloxanes Dergall preparation on chick embryo development and microbiological status of eggshells
The spatial network structure of Dergall is based on substances nontoxic to humans and the environment which, when applied on solid surfaces, creates a coating that reduces bacterial cell adhesion. The bacteriostatic properties of siloxanes are based on a purely physical action mechanism which excludes development of drug-resistant microorganisms. The aims of the present study were to 1) evaluate a Dergall layer formed on the eggshell surface regarding the potential harmful effects on the chick embryo; 2) evaluate antimicrobial activity and estimate the prolongation time of Dergall's potential antimicrobial activity. Dergall at a concentration of 0.6% formed a layer on the eggshell surface. In vitro testing of the potential harmful effects of Dergall by means of a hen embryo test of the chorioallantoic membrane showed no irritation reaction at a concentration of 3% and lower. The hatchability of the groups sprayed with a Dergall water solution with a concentration of 0 to 5% was 89.1 to 93.8% for fertilized eggs (P > 0.05) but decreased to 63.7% (P < 0.05) in the group sprayed with a 6% concentration of the solution. This phenomenon was caused by embryo mortality in the first week of incubation. At the concentration of 0.6%, Dergall exhibited strong antibacterial properties against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella typhimurium. For Streptococcus pyogenes, the highest antibacterial activity of Dergall was reported in the concentrations of 100 and 50%. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, no antibacterial activity of Dergall was generally observed, but in vivo testing showed a strong decrease of all gram-negative bacteria growth. Moreover, a prolonged antimicrobial effect lasting until 3 D after disinfection was observed, which makes Dergall a safe and efficient disinfectant
Obesity, knowledge of diet and healthy behaviors in children and adolescents from small towns and villages - results of Polish Project of 400 Cities
znalezienie związku pomiędzy wiedzą i zachowaniami zdrowotnymi
dzieci a ryzykiem wystąpienia nadmiaru masy ciała.
MATERIAŁ I METODY. Badaniami objęto 1515 osób w wieku 6-18
lat pochodzących z małych miast i wsi.
talii, obwodu ramienia prawego, wzrostu i masy ciała).
WYNIKI. Nadwagę rozpoznano u 9,0%, a otyłość u 5,1% respondentów.
W grupie wiekowej 14-18 lat u dziewcząt statystycznie
które należy konsumować, by zachować zdrowie. Starsze dzieci
istotnie częściej wskazywały na: stres, palenie tytoniu, spożywanie
tłustego mięsa, słodyczy, "bycie grubasem", brak aktywności fizycznej
jako czynniki, które są niekorzystne dla zdrowia. Chłopcy więcej
czasu spędzali przed monitorem komputera i telewizora niż
dziewczęta - wraz z wiekiem zjawisko to było bardziej nasilone.
WNIOSKI.
telewizorem i monitorem komputera.
Pomimo świadomości żywieniowej posiadanej przez dzieci nadal
istnieje potrzeba ciągłej edukacji w zakresie zdrowego stylu życia.
Endokrynologia, Otyłość i Zaburzenia Przemiany Materii 2010, tom 6, nr 2, 59-66INTRODUCTION. Apart from genetic predispositions, environmental
factors play huge role, including health behaviors and knowledge
of healthy lifestyle in children and adolescents.
The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of overweight
and obesity among children and adolescents from small towns
and villages and tracing association between the knowledge and
health behaviors in children and overweight risk
MATERIAL AND METHODS. The research was conducted in
a group of 1515 healthy children aged 6-18 from small towns and
villages. The questionnaires, blood pressure and anthropometric
measurements were done in all studied children.
RESULTS. Overweight was diagnosed when body mass index for
on age sex identified surpassed 90th centile, and obesity - when it
was above 95th centile. Overweight was diagnosed in 9.0%, and
obesity in 5.1% of respondents. Excess body mass was statistically
more frequently observed in girls then in boys aged 14-18. These
girls substantially more frequently pointed at whole meal bread,
smoked sausages, meat and poultry as products, which are necessary
to keep fit. Older children more often pointed at stress,
smoking cigarettes, consuming fatty meat, sweets and "being
plump". Lack of physical activity is factor, which damage health.
Boys spent more time in front of the computer or TV than girls -
as the children grow the phenomenon intensified.
CONCLUSIONS. The knowledge of eating habits is not enough to
maintain proper body weight.
The girls have more knowledge of eating habits than boys, but
overweight is more frequently observed in girls.
In older group of children lower physical activity was observed as
consequence of longer watching TV and using computer.
Although children have eating habits knowledge there is a constant
need for healthy life style education for children and adolescents.

Demographic trends in rural areas in Poland taking into account the functional types of communes (survey research)
Praca powstała na podstawie wyników badań ankietowych nt. wielofunkcyjnego rozwoju obszarów wiejskich zrealizowanych w latach 2018/2019 i obejmujących szeroki zakres pytań dotyczących sfery gospodarczej, społecznej i planistycznej. Ankietę skierowano do wójtów i burmistrzów gmin wiejskichi miejsko-wiejskich. Wielofunkcyjny rozwój obszarów wiejskich w badaniu analizowano w relacji do typu funkcjonalnego gminy wyrażającego charakter gminy i specyfikę jej aktualnego rozwoju, w kontekście aktualnych trendów demograficznych. The work was based on the results of surveys on multifunctional rural development implemented in 2018/2019 and covering a wide range of questions about the economic, social and planning sphere. The survey was addressed to local authorities (mayors, commune administrators) of rural and urban-rural communes. In the study, multifunctional rural development was analyzed within the functional type of the commune expressing the character of the commune and the specificity of its current development in the context of current demographic trends. The article assesses the demographic situation in communes. Research has shown the intensive process of depopulation the most of rural areas and a large spatial diversity of this phenomenon in relation to provinces. The evaluation showed that rural areas within urban-rural communes are more depopulated compared to rural communes. Analyzing the process of depopulation by functional types, it was found that the largest percentage of communes maintaining a negative population balance is concentrated in typically agricultural, located at the border and forestry communes
Preliminary assessment of the eutrophication status of selected areas in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea according to the EU Water Framework Directive
The implementation of the European Union Water Framework Directiverequired a number of tasks to be fulfilled: classifying the variouswater bodies into different types, defining reference conditionsfor each of the types and assessing their ecological qualitystatus - this last is based on biological, hydromorphologicaland physicochemical quality elements of the ecosystem. The paper presents an attempt to estimate reference values inselected areas of Polish coastal and transitional watersas well as in an open sea area following WFD principles. The preliminary eutrophication assessment showed all the assessedareas to be eutrophication problem areas
