    Chitosan film enriched with an antioxidant agent, taurine, in fenestration defects

    PubMedID: 10880094A natural polysaccharide, chitosan (poly-N-acetyl glucosaminoglycan), which is a nontoxic and bioabsorbable polymer, has been shown to have hemostatic and antibacterial effects. An amino acid, taurine, is considered to be beneficial for regulating the inflammation process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the synergistic effects of taurine and chitosan in the experimental defects at the vestibular bone of maxillary canine teeth in six dogs. Chitosan films were prepared as delivery system with or without taurine and placed in the randomly chosen defects. Biopsies were performed on the postoperative seventh day and routine histological procedures were performed for light and electron microscopic evaluations. For each group, 30 different microscopic areas were examined and the numbers of macrophages and neutrophils in these areas were counted. The mean numbers of both macrophages and neutrophils were found statistically different between the chitosan film incorporated with taurine and free chitosan groups (p 0.05). In addition to the increase in cell counts in both groups, the cytological alterations were more obvious in the chitosan film group incorporated with taurine. Accordingly, taurine appears to enhance the acceleration effect of chitosan on wound healing at early periods. This effect could be considered beneficial in tissue repair in destructive diseases like periodontitis.     The prevalence of microalbuminuria and relevant cardiovascular risk factors in Turkish hypertensive patients

    PubMed ID: 22257801Objectives: A growing body of data illustrates the importance of microalbuminuria (MAU) as a strong predictor of cardiovascular risk in the hypertensive population. The present study was designed to define the prevalence of MAU and associated cardiovascular risk factors among Turkish hypertensive outpatients. Study design: Representing the Turkish arm of the multinational i-SEARCH study involving 1,750 sites in 26 countries around the world, a total of 1,926 hypertensive patients from different centers were included in this observational and cross-sectional survey study. Patients with reasons for a false-positive MAU test were excluded. The prevalence of MAU was assessed using a dipstick test, and patients were inquired about comorbidities, comedication, and known cardiovascular risk factors. Results: The overall prevalence of MAU was 64.7% and there was no difference between genders. Most of the patients (82.5%) had uncontrolled hypertension, 35.6% had dyslipidemia, and 35.5% had diabetes, predominantly type 2. Almost one-third of the patients (26.4%) had at least one cardiovascular-related comorbidity, with 20.3% having documented coronary artery disease (CAD). Almost all patients (96.8%) had one or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease in addition to hypertension, including family history of myocardial infarction or CAD, diabetes, dyslipidemia, lack of physical exercise, and smoking. A trend towards higher MAU values in the presence of CAD was determined. Conclusion: Microalbuminuria tests should be routinely used as a screening and monitoring tool for the assessment of subsequent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among hypertensive patients. © 2011 Turkish Society of Cardiology

    Impaired coronary blood flow may be related to elevated homocysteine levels in patients with metabolic syndrome

    Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) refers to a group of cardiovascular risk factors associated with endothelial dysfunction and impaired coronary blood flow (CBF). Homocysteine (Hcy) is another risk factor for the development of insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction. However, the relationship between Hcy levels and CBF in patients with MS has not been investigated specifically. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between Hcy levels and CBF in MS patients with normal coronary arteries. Methods: The study population included 36 patients with MS (20 males, 16 females; mean age = 55 ± 9 years) and 36 control subjects (20 males, 16 females; mean age = 51 ± 7 years). All subjects had angiographically proven normal coronary arteries. Plasma Hcy concentrations were evaluated after a fast of 12 h or longer. The CBF rates of all subjects were documented by the thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) frame count method. Results: The TIMI frame counts for each major epicardial coronary artery and mean TIMI frame count were found to be significantly higher in the MS group compared with the control group (left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD): 53 ± 26 vs. 39 ± 17; p = 0.01, left circumflex artery (LCx): 32 ± 12 vs. 26 ± 11; p = 0.01, right coronary artery (RCA): 33 ± 14 vs. 26 ± 12; p = 0.02, mean TIMI frame count: 39 ± 16 vs. 20 ± 12; p = 0.01). Plasma Hcy levels in patients with MS were significantly higher compared with controls (MS group = 11.6 ± 4 and control group = 9.6 ± 2.6; p = 0.01). Additionally, plasma Hcy levels were positively correlated with each calculated TIMI frame count value in the MS group (LAD, r: 0.28 and p = 0.006; LCx, r: 0.25 and p = 0.022; RCA, r: 0.26 and p = 0.042; mean TIMI frame count, r: 0.28 and p = 0.004). Conclusion: Plasma Hcy levels and TIMI frame counts were significantly higher in patients with MS. Impaired CBF in MS may be related to elevated levels of Hcy, even if Hcy levels are normal. © 2015, Springer-Verlag Wien

    Fish assemblage and diversity in lakes of western and central Turkey: role of geo-climatic and other environmental variables

    We conducted a fish survey in 40 lakes in western and central Turkey. Fifty species (one to eleven per lake) were recorded, including eighteen endemic and seven alien species. We investigated which local geo-climatic and other environmental variables shaped the fish assemblages. Altitude and temperature turned out to be the most important factors for total species richness as well as richness of omnivorous and zooplanktivorous species and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index, with more species and higher diversity occurring in the warmer lowland lakes. Altitude may affect the fish assemblage directly through dispersal limitation or indirectly by creating a gradient in temperature with which it was strongly correlated. Cyprinidae was the most species-rich and widespread family. Atherinidae, Gobiidae, and Mugilidae (families of marine origin) were mainly found in the lowland regions, while Salmonidae exclusively appeared in the high-altitude lakes. The presence of widely distributed translocated native and alien species revealed a large human impact on the fish assemblages, potentially threatening the rich endemic fish fauna in lakes in this region. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland

    Disappearance of Idiopathic Outflow Tract Premature Ventricular Contractions After Catheter Ablation of Overt Accessory Pathways

    Background: Multiple mechanisms have been proposed for idiopathic premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) originating from the outflow tracts (OTs). Recent observations such as the coexistence of these arrhythmias with atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardias and the association between discrete prepotentials and successful ablation sites of ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) from the OTs suggest a common link. Objective: In this case series we draw attention to a unique association between accessory pathways (APs) and idiopathic PVCs from the OTs, disappearing after AP ablation. Methods: We identified 6 cases in collaboration with several international electrophysiology centers, which presented with pre-excitation in association with OT, and in 1 case inflow tract (IT), PVCs on 12-lead surface ECG. Results: Six cases displayed pre-excitation and PVCs, in 5 cases originating from the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and in 1 case from the right ventricular inflow tract (RVIT). In all patients, PVCs were monomorphic and had fixed coupling intervals, in 3 cases presenting in bigeminy. Catheter ablation of the AP led to the simultaneous disappearance of PVCs in 5 of 6 cases. The sites of ablation were remote from the OTs in all these cases. In most cases, the occurrence of OT PVCs was closely associated with the presence of pre-excitation. Conclusion: The coexistence of pre-excitation and PVCs from the OTs and the fact that in 5 of 6 cases PVCs disappeared after AP ablation suggests a common mechanism for arrhythmia genesis
