A local Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric gravity coupled to a scalar field
We present a gauge fixing of gravity coupled to a scalar field in spherical
symmetry such that the Hamiltonian is an integral over space of a local
density. Such a formulation had proved elusive over the years. As in any gauge
fixing, it works for a restricted set of initial data. We argue that the set
could be large enough to attempt a quantization the could include the important
case of an evaporating black hole.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, RevTex, final published versio
Epidemiological and pathogenic relationship between sleep apnea and ischemic heart disease
Obstructive sleep apnea is recognized as having high prevalence and causing remarkable cardiovascular risk. Coronary artery
disease has been associated with obstructive sleep apnea in many reports. The pathophysiology of coronary artery disease in
obstructive sleep apnea patients probably includes the activation of multiple mechanisms, as the sympathetic activity, endothelial
dysfunction, atherosclerosis, and systemic hypertension. Moreover, chronic intermittent hypoxia and oxidative stress have an
important role in the pathogenesis of coronary disease and are also fundamental to the development of atherosclerosis and other
comorbidities present in coronary artery diseases such as lipid metabolic disorders. Interestingly, the prognosis of patients with
coronary artery disease has been associated with obstructive sleep apnea and the severity of sleep disordered breathing may have
a direct relationship with the morbidity and mortality of patients with coronary diseases. Nevertheless, treatment with CPAP may
have important effects, and recent reports have described the benefits of obstructive sleep apnea treatment on the recurrence of
acute heart ischaemic events in patients with coronary artery diseas

TiO2-Low Band Gap Semiconductor Heterostructures for Water Treatment Using Sunlight-Driven Photocatalysis
Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a promising advanced oxidation process for water purification, given its potential to fully oxidize organic pollutants and to inactivate microorganisms. Due to its versatility and high performance in a broad range of conditions, titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysis has been systematically used at laboratory scale to treat water of different quality. Even though TiO2 is an exceptional photocatalyst, its broad band gap value (3.2 eV) makes necessary the use of UV light to achieve the photoactivation. This results in the underutilization of the material in sunlight-driven photocatalysis schemes. In order to overcome this handicap, the synthesis of heterostructures using low band gap semiconductors coupled with TiO2 has brought exceptional materials for visible light-driven photocatalysis. In this chapter, the fundamentals of the synthesis and photoactivation of TiO2-low band gap semiconductor heterostructures are explored. The mechanisms leading to the increase of the photocatalytic activity of such heterostructures are described. A summary of the available data on the photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based heterostructures is presented, in terms of degradation of organic pollutants in water using visible light and sunlight. A comparison of the depuration performance of powdered and thin film heterostructures is given at the end of the chapter
Nonmagnetic γ″-FeN thin films epitaxially grown on Cu(001): Electronic structure and thermal stability
6 págs.; 7 figs. ; PACS number s : 73.20. r, 71.20. b, 71.15.Mb, 68.37.EfWe report on a theoretical and experimental study of the growth, electronic structure, and thermal stability of ultrathin films of nonmagnetic iron nitride. The films are grown by evaporation of Fe, in a flux of atomic N produced by a plasma source, onto a Cu(001) surface kept at 300 K and characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The compound formed is identified as γ″ -FeN (001) growing epitaxially on the substrate. Its electronic structure and thermal stability has been studied and compared with first-principles calculations. This nitride film transforms to magnetic γ′ -Fe4 N phase by annealing above 650 K, opening new perspectives for applications of these films in functional magnetic nanostructures. © 2008 The American Physical Society. This work was supported by the Spanish CICyT under
