A WBEM based solution for a 4G network integrated management

    Get PDF
Next generation networks will put a new set of challenges related to operation and management, due to the increased complexity arising by the seamless integration of different kinds of technologies, services and terminals, and with the expected offered bandwidth. In this paper we present a Policy-based management system that is being developed inside the Daidalos IST project for such environments. This system uses Policy Based Management concepts associated with Web-Based Enterprise Management to control QoS aspects in this complex network

An ICT-oriented Management Solution for NGNs

    Get PDF
NGN architecture reused several standards from the IP world, as exemplified by the Session Initiation Protocol SIP, which is ubiquitous in the majority of these network components. However, the NGN management architecture simply presented a very generic management model that follows TMN. Several management technologies are proposed, such as Web services, CORBA and SNMP, to implement management solutions. Network and systems management standardizing bodies currently promote newer technologies that aim to solve known shortcomings to these. This paper proposes a management solution for NGNs based on recent IP world technologies. The presented solution was implemented in the form of a middleware to manage NGN elements. This middleware was used in the management of an element belonging to the IP Multimedia Subsystem platform, namely the Policy and Charging Rules Function

Deliverable JRA1.1: Evaluation of current network control and management planes for multi-domain network infrastructure

    Get PDF
This deliverable includes a compilation and evaluation of available control and management architectures and protocols applicable to a multilayer infrastructure in a multi-domain Virtual Network environment. The scope of this deliverable is mainly focused on the virtualisation of the resources within a network and at processing nodes. The virtualization of the FEDERICA infrastructure allows the provisioning of its available resources to users by means of FEDERICA slices. A slice is seen by the user as a real physical network under his/her domain, however it maps to a logical partition (a virtual instance) of the physical FEDERICA resources. A slice is built to exhibit to the highest degree all the principles applicable to a physical network (isolation, reproducibility, manageability, ...). Currently, there are no standard definitions available for network virtualization or its associated architectures. Therefore, this deliverable proposes the Virtual Network layer architecture and evaluates a set of Management- and Control Planes that can be used for the partitioning and virtualization of the FEDERICA network resources. This evaluation has been performed taking into account an initial set of FEDERICA requirements; a possible extension of the selected tools will be evaluated in future deliverables. The studies described in this deliverable define the virtual architecture of the FEDERICA infrastructure. During this activity, the need has been recognised to establish a new set of basic definitions (taxonomy) for the building blocks that compose the so-called slice, i.e. the virtual network instantiation (which is virtual with regard to the abstracted view made of the building blocks of the FEDERICA infrastructure) and its architectural plane representation. These definitions will be established as a common nomenclature for the FEDERICA project. Other important aspects when defining a new architecture are the user requirements. It is crucial that the resulting architecture fits the demands that users may have. Since this deliverable has been produced at the same time as the contact process with users, made by the project activities related to the Use Case definitions, JRA1 has proposed a set of basic Use Cases to be considered as starting point for its internal studies. When researchers want to experiment with their developments, they need not only network resources on their slices, but also a slice of the processing resources. These processing slice resources are understood as virtual machine instances that users can use to make them behave as software routers or end nodes, on which to download the software protocols or applications they have produced and want to assess in a realistic environment. Hence, this deliverable also studies the APIs of several virtual machine management software products in order to identify which best suits FEDERICA’s needs.Postprint (published version

A CIM framework for standard-based system monitoring using nagios plug-ins

    Get PDF
The Common Information Model is a widely-accepted industry standard to model distributed system objects as well as their behaviors and interactions to realize system management tasks. It is endorsed by the Distributed Management Task Force and appears as the preferred manageability solution to deal with the ever increasing heterogeneity characterizing today’s datacenters. However, a number of enterprise-class system management products, like Nagios, are not compliant with this standard. Nagios is among the top open source monitoring tools with the power of a large community of developers producing plug-ins to manage a variety of enterprise systems. As part of the endeavor to accelerate CIM adoption, an extension framework, called Plugin Extension for CIM, has been developed in order to expose Nagios and other third-party plug-ins thru CIM, thus enhancing the capabilities of standard-based system management tools by the transparent use of the extensive variety of existing plug-ins. This paper describes the developed framework as well as its acceptance within the open source manageability community.IV Workshop Arquitectura, Redes y Sistemas Operativos (WARSO)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Decentralized Network Management Using Web-Based Technologies

    Get PDF
The emerging Web-based proposals for network management are a promising approach for managing distributed and heterogeneous computer networks. This paper discusses how these technologies can be used to implement the Management by Delegation decentralised paradigm (MbD, introduced by Yemini and Goldszmidt). Managers and agents can benefit from the ease of use and platform-independence of Web-based protocols and tools while supporting the essential feature of MbD: elasticity

Extending the Globus Information Service with the Common Information Model

This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version. The final authenticated version is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/ISPA.2011.62[Abstract] The need of task-adapted and complete information for the management of resources is a well known issue in Grid computing. Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4) includes the Monitoring and Discovery System component (MDS4) to carry out resource management. The Common Information Model (CIM) provides a standard conceptual view of the managed environment. This work improves the MDS4 functionality through the use of CIM, with the aim of providing a unified, standard representation of the Grid resources. Since a practical CIM model may contain a large volume of information, a new Index Service that represents the CIM information through Java instances is presented. In addition, a solution that keeps data in persistent storage has also been implemented. The evaluation of the proposed solutions achieves encouraging results, with an important reduction in memory consumption, a good scalability when the number of instances increases, and with a reasonable response time.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; TIN2007-67537-C03Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación; TIN2010-1637

Integrating an Online Configuration Checker with Existing Management Systems : Application to CIM/WBEM Environments

    Get PDF
National audienceRuntime configuration validation is a critical requirement if we are to build reliable self-adaptive management systems. This paper presents a generic framework that includes a runtime configuration checker built upon a high-level language dedicated to the specification of configurations and validity constraints. In addition, we describe a methodology for using this framework and integrating the configuration checker with existing management systems. In particular, we show how we use the framework to enrich a CIM/WBEM management environment with automatic runtime configuration validation against a defined set of constraints guarding structural correctness and service behavior conformance. Our experiments with management models conforming to the CIM Virtual System profile show viable results demonstrating the feasibility of our approach
