    Feasibility of using Lodox to perform digital subtraction angiography

    Bibliography: leaves 150-157.Many cases in trauma involve vessel imaging to determine integrity and the origin of lesions or blockages. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a tool used to improve the clarity of the vessels being imaged for better and easier decision making in diagnostics and planning. Lodox, a low dose x-ray system developed by Debex (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of de Beers, was designed specifically for the trauma environment. It therefore follows that, if possible, a function so readily used in trauma, such as DSA, should be added to the imaging repertoire of an x-ray system designed for use in this environment. In this dissertation the feasibility of using Lodox to perform DSA is therefore explored. In doing so, the requirements of a trauma unit and the theory behind DSA were researched so as to obtain a better understanding into what would be required

    Real-time tessellation of terrain on graphics hardware

    Synthetic terrain is a key element in many applications, which can lessen the sense of realism if it is not handled correctly. We propose a new technique for visualizing terrain surfaces by tessellating them on the GPU. The presented algorithm introduces a new adaptive tessellation scheme for managing the level of detail of the terrain mesh, avoiding the appearance of t-vertices that can produce visually disturbing artifacts. Previous solutions exploited the geometry shader's capabilities to tessellate meshes from scratch. In contrast, we reuse the already calculated data to minimize the operations performed in the shader units. This feature allows us to increase performance through smart refining and coarsening.     Semi-automatic 3D reconstruction of urban areas using epipolar geometry and template matching

    WOS:000240143800002 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science)In this work we describe a novel technique for semi-automatic three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of urban areas, from airborne stereo-pair images whose output is VRML or DXF. The main challenge is to compute the relevant information—building's height and volume, roof's description, and texture—algorithmically, because it is very time consuming and thus expensive to produce it manually for large urban areas. The algorithm requires some initial calibration input and is able to compute the above-mentioned building characteristics from the stereo pair and the availability of the 2D CAD and the digital elevation model of the same area, with no knowledge of the camera pose or its intrinsic parameters. To achieve this, we have used epipolar geometry, homography computation, automatic feature extraction and we have solved the feature correspondence problem in the stereo pair, by using template matching

    Statistical modelling for facial expression dynamics

    PhDOne of the most powerful and fastest means of relaying emotions between humans are facial expressions. The ability to capture, understand and mimic those emotions and their underlying dynamics in the synthetic counterpart is a challenging task because of the complexity of human emotions, different ways of conveying them, non-linearities caused by facial feature and head motion, and the ever critical eye of the viewer. This thesis sets out to address some of the limitations of existing techniques by investigating three components of expression modelling and parameterisation framework: (1) Feature and expression manifold representation, (2) Pose estimation, and (3) Expression dynamics modelling and their parameterisation for the purpose of driving a synthetic head avatar. First, we introduce a hierarchical representation based on the Point Distribution Model (PDM). Holistic representations imply that non-linearities caused by the motion of facial features, and intrafeature correlations are implicitly embedded and hence have to be accounted for in the resulting expression space. Also such representations require large training datasets to account for all possible variations. To address those shortcomings, and to provide a basis for learning more subtle, localised variations, our representation consists of tree-like structure where a holistic root component is decomposed into leaves containing the jaw outline, each of the eye and eyebrows and the mouth. Each of the hierarchical components is modelled according to its intrinsic functionality, rather than the final, holistic expression label. Secondly, we introduce a statistical approach for capturing an underlying low-dimension expression manifold by utilising components of the previously defined hierarchical representation. As Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based approaches cannot reliably capture variations caused by large facial feature changes because of its linear nature, the underlying dynamics manifold for each of the hierarchical components is modelled using a Hierarchical Latent Variable Model (HLVM) approach. Whilst retaining PCA properties, such a model introduces a probability density model which can deal with missing or incomplete data and allows discovery of internal within cluster structures. All of the model parameters and underlying density model are automatically estimated during the training stage. We investigate the usefulness of such a model to larger and unseen datasets. Thirdly, we extend the concept of HLVM model to pose estimation to address the non-linear shape deformations and definition of the plausible pose space caused by large head motion. Since our head rarely stays still, and its movements are intrinsically connected with the way we perceive and understand the expressions, pose information is an integral part of their dynamics. The proposed 3 approach integrates into our existing hierarchical representation model. It is learned using sparse and discreetly sampled training dataset, and generalises to a larger and continuous view-sphere. Finally, we introduce a framework that models and extracts expression dynamics. In existing frameworks, explicit definition of expression intensity and pose information, is often overlooked, although usually implicitly embedded in the underlying representation. We investigate modelling of the expression dynamics based on use of static information only, and focus on its sufficiency for the task at hand. We compare a rule-based method that utilises the existing latent structure and provides a fusion of different components with holistic and Bayesian Network (BN) approaches. An Active Appearance Model (AAM) based tracker is used to extract relevant information from input sequences. Such information is subsequently used to define the parametric structure of the underlying expression dynamics. We use the resulting tetrahedrization to produce from-point visibility algorithms that can be either exact, conservative or aggressive. We also discuss the applications of such from-point and from-region visibility techniques, including their use in lighting and in simulating vision of artificial intelligence agents

    In order to be able to navigate in the world without memorizing each detail, the human brain builds a mental map of its environment. The mental map is a distorted and abstracted representation of the real environment. Unimportant areas tend to be collapsed to a single entity while important landmarks are overemphasized. When working with visualizations of data we build a mental map of the data which is closely linked to the particular visualization. If the visualization changes significantly due to changes in the data or the way it is presented we loose the mental map and have to rebuild it from scratch. The purpose of the research underlying this thesis was to investigate and devise methods to create smooth transformations between visualizations of relational data which help users in maintaining or quickly updating their mental map

    Developing Historic Building Information Modelling Guidelines and Procedures for Architectural Heritage in Ireland

    Cultural heritage researchers have recently begun applying Building Information Modelling (BIM) to historic buildings. The model is comprised of intelligent objects with semantic attributes which represent the elements of a building structure and are organised within a 3D virtual environment. Case studies in Ireland are used to test and develop the suitable systems for (a) data capture/digital surveying/processing (b) developing library of architectural components and (c) mapping these architectural components onto the laser scan or digital survey to relate the intelligent virtual representation of a historic structure (HBIM). While BIM platforms have the potential to create a virtual and intelligent representation of a building, its full exploitation and use is restricted to narrow set of expert users with access to costly hardware, software and skills. The testing of open BIM approaches in particular IFCs and the use of game engine platforms is a fundamental component for developing much wider dissemination. The semantically enriched model can be transferred into a WEB based game engine platform

    Spherical mosaic construction using physical analogy for consistent image alignment

    The research contained in this thesis is an investigation into mosaic construction. Mosaic techniques are used to obtain images with a large field of view by assembling a sequence of smaller individual overlapping images. In existing methods of mosaic construction only successive images are aligned. Accumulation of small alignment errors occur, and in the case of the image path returning to a previous position in the mosaic, a significant mismatch between nonconsecutive images will result (looping path problem). A new method for consistently aligning all the images in a mosaic is proposed in this thesis. This is achieved by distribution of the small alignment errors. Each image is allowed to modify its position relative to its neighbour images in the mosaic by a small amount with respect to the computed registration. Two images recorded by a rotating ideal camera are related by the same transformation that relates the camera's sensor plane at the time the images were captured. When two images overlap, the intensity values in both images coincide through the intersection line of the sensor planes. This intersection line has the property that the images can be seamlessly joined through that line. An analogy between the images and the physical world is proposed to solve the looping path problem. The images correspond to rigid objects, and these are linked with forces which pull them towards the right positions with respect to their neighbours. That is, every pair of overlapping images are "hinged" through their corresponding intersection line. Aided by another constraint named the spherical constraint, this network of selforganising images has the ability of distributing itself on the surface of a sphere. As a direct result of the new concepts developed in this research work, spherical mosaics (i.e. mosaics with unlimited horizontal and vertical field of view) can be created

    AFFECT-PRESERVING VISUAL PRIVACY PROTECTION

    The prevalence of wireless networks and the convenience of mobile cameras enable many new video applications other than security and entertainment. From behavioral diagnosis to wellness monitoring, cameras are increasing used for observations in various educational and medical settings. Videos collected for such applications are considered protected health information under privacy laws in many countries. Visual privacy protection techniques, such as blurring or object removal, can be used to mitigate privacy concern, but they also obliterate important visual cues of affect and social behaviors that are crucial for the target applications. In this dissertation, we propose to balance the privacy protection and the utility of the data by preserving the privacy-insensitive information, such as pose and expression, which is useful in many applications involving visual understanding. The Intellectual Merits of the dissertation include a novel framework for visual privacy protection by manipulating facial image and body shape of individuals, which: (1) is able to conceal the identity of individuals; (2) provide a way to preserve the utility of the data, such as expression and pose information; (3) balance the utility of the data and capacity of the privacy protection. The Broader Impacts of the dissertation focus on the significance of privacy protection on visual data, and the inadequacy of current privacy enhancing technologies in preserving affect and behavioral attributes of the visual content, which are highly useful for behavior observation in educational and medical settings. This work in this dissertation represents one of the first attempts in achieving both goals simultaneously
