3D Geometric Analysis of Tubular Objects based on Surface Normal Accumulation
This paper proposes a simple and efficient method for the reconstruction and
extraction of geometric parameters from 3D tubular objects. Our method
constructs an image that accumulates surface normal information, then peaks
within this image are located by tracking. Finally, the positions of these are
optimized to lie precisely on the tubular shape centerline. This method is very
versatile, and is able to process various input data types like full or partial
mesh acquired from 3D laser scans, 3D height map or discrete volumetric images.
The proposed algorithm is simple to implement, contains few parameters and can
be computed in linear time with respect to the number of surface faces. Since
the extracted tube centerline is accurate, we are able to decompose the tube
into rectilinear parts and torus-like parts. This is done with a new linear
time 3D torus detection algorithm, which follows the same principle of a
previous work on 2D arc circle recognition. Detailed experiments show the
versatility, accuracy and robustness of our new method.Comment: in 18th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing,

Point Cloud Structural Parts Extraction based on Segmentation Energy Minimization
In this work we consider 3D point sets, which in a typical setting represent unorganized point clouds. Segmentation of these point sets requires first to single out structural components of the unknown surface discretely approximated by the point cloud. Structural components, in turn, are surface patches approximating unknown parts of elementary geometric structures, such as planes, ellipsoids, spheres and so on. The approach used is based on level set methods computing the moving front of the surface and tracing the interfaces between different parts of it. Level set methods are widely recognized to be one of the most efficient methods to segment both 2D images and 3D medical images. Level set methods for 3D segmentation have recently received an increasing interest. We contribute by proposing a novel approach for raw point sets. Based on the motion and distance functions of the level set we introduce four energy minimization models, which are used for segmentation, by considering an equal number of distance functions specified by geometric features. Finally we evaluate the proposed algorithm on point sets simulating unorganized point clouds
A Variational Approach to 3D Cylindrical Geometry Reconstruction from Multiple Views
In this paper we present a variational technique for the reconstruction of 3D cylindrical surfaces. Roughly speaking by a cylindrical surface we mean a surface that can be parameterized using the projection on a cylinder in terms of two coordinates, (l, ?), representing the displacement and angle in a cylindrical coordinate system respectively. The starting point for our method is a set of different views of a cylindrical surface, as well as a precomputed disparity map estimation between pair of images. The proposed variational technique is based on an energy minimization where we balance on the one hand the regularity of the cylindrical function given by the distance of the surface points to cylinder axis, and on the other hand, the distance between the projection of the surface points on the images and the expected location following the precomputed disparity map estimation between pair of images. One interesting advantage of this approach is that we regularize the 3D surface by means of a bi-dimensional minimization problem. We show some experimental results for large stereo sequences
Automatic normal orientation in point clouds of building interiors
Orienting surface normals correctly and consistently is a fundamental problem
in geometry processing. Applications such as visualization, feature detection,
and geometry reconstruction often rely on the availability of correctly
oriented normals. Many existing approaches for automatic orientation of normals
on meshes or point clouds make severe assumptions on the input data or the
topology of the underlying object which are not applicable to real-world
measurements of urban scenes. In contrast, our approach is specifically
tailored to the challenging case of unstructured indoor point cloud scans of
multi-story, multi-room buildings. We evaluate the correctness and speed of our
approach on multiple real-world point cloud datasets

Reconstructing Surfaces Using Anisotropic Basis Functions
Point sets obtained from computer vision techniques are often noisy and non-uniform. We present a new method of surface reconstruction that can handle such data sets using anisotropic basis functions. Our reconstruction algorithm draws upon the work in variational implicit surfaces for constructing smooth and seamless 3D surfaces. Implicit functions are often formulated as a sum of weighted basis functions that are radially symmetric. Using radially symmetric basis functions inherently assumes, however that the surface to be reconstructed is, everywhere, locally symmetric. Such an assumption is true only at planar regions, and hence, reconstruction using isotropic basis is insufficient to recover objects that exhibit sharp features. We preserve sharp features using anisotropic basis that allow the surface to vary locally. The reconstructed surface is sharper along edges and at corner points. We determine the direction of anisotropy at a point by performing principal component analysis of the data points in a small neighborhood. The resulting field of principle directions across the surface is smoothed through tensor filtering. We have applied the anisotropic basis functions to reconstruct surfaces from noisy synthetic 3D data and from real range data obtained from space carving
Compact elliptical basis functions for surface reconstruction
In this technical report I present a method to reconstruct a surface representation from a a set of EBF's, and in addition present an efficient top--down method to build an EBF representation from a point cloud representation of a surface. I also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach
