    Human Hand Motion Analysis and Synthesis of Optimal Power Grasps for a Robotic Hand

    Biologically inspired robotic systems can find important applications in biomedical robotics, since studying and replicating human behaviour can provide new insights into motor recovery, functional substitution and human-robot interaction. The analysis of human hand motion is essential for collecting information about human hand movements useful for generalizing reaching and grasping actions on a robotic system. This paper focuses on the definition and extraction of quantitative indicators for describing optimal hand grasping postures and replicating them on an anthropomorphic robotic hand. A motion analysis has been carried out on six healthy human subjects performing a transverse volar grasp. The extracted indicators point to invariant grasping behaviours between the involved subjects, thus providing some constraints for identifying the optimal grasping configuration. Hence, an optimization algorithm based on the Nelder-Mead simplex method has been developed for determining the optimal grasp configuration of a robotic hand, grounded on the aforementioned constraints. It is characterized by a reduced computational cost. The grasp stability has been tested by introducing a quality index that satisfies the form-closure property. The grasping strategy has been validated by means of simulation tests and experimental trials on an arm-hand robotic system. The obtained results have shown the effectiveness of the extracted indicators to reduce the non-linear optimization problem complexity and lead to the synthesis of a grasping posture able to replicate the human behaviour while ensuring grasp stability. The experimental results have also highlighted the limitations of the adopted robotic platform (mainly due to the mechanical structure) to achieve the optimal grasp configuration

Consequently, many manufacturers subject to frequent change prefer flexible and reconfigurable production systems. Such schemes are often achieved by means of manual assembly, as conventional automated systems are perceived as lacking flexibility. Production lines that incorporate human workers are particularly common within consumer electronics and small appliances. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a possible avenue to achieve smart robotic automation in this context. In this research it is argued that a robust, autonomous object handling process plays a crucial role in future manufacturing systems that incorporate robotics—key to further closing the gap between manual and fully automated production. Novel object grasping is a difficult task, confounded by many factors including object geometry, weight distribution, friction coefficients and deformation characteristics. Sensing and actuation accuracy can also significantly impact manipulation quality. Another challenge is understanding the relationship between these factors, a specific grasping strategy, the robotic arm and the employed end-effector. Manipulation has been a central research topic within robotics for many years. Some works focus on design, i.e. specifying a gripper-object interface such that the effects of imprecise gripper placement and other confounding control-related factors are mitigated. Many universal robotic gripper designs have been considered, including 3-fingered gripper designs, anthropomorphic grippers, granular jamming end-effectors and underactuated mechanisms. While such approaches have maintained some interest, contemporary works predominantly utilise machine learning in conjunction with imaging technologies and generic force-closure end-effectors. Neural networks that utilise supervised and unsupervised learning schemes with an RGB or RGB-D input make up the bulk of publications within this field. Though many solutions have been studied, automatically generating a robust grasp configuration for objects not known a priori, remains an open-ended problem. An element of this issue relates to a lack of objective performance metrics to quantify the effectiveness of a solution—which has traditionally driven the direction of community focus by highlighting gaps in the state-of-the-art. This research employs monocular vision and deep learning to generate—and select from—a set of hypothesis grasps. A significant portion of this research relates to the process by which a final grasp is selected. Grasp synthesis is achieved by sampling the workspace using convolutional neural networks trained to recognise prospective grasp areas. Each potential pose is evaluated by the proposed method in conjunction with other input modalities—such as load-cells and an alternate perspective. To overcome human bias and build upon traditional metrics, scores are established to objectively quantify the quality of an executed grasp trial. Learning frameworks that aim to maximise for these scores are employed in the selection process to improve performance. The proposed methodology and associated metrics are empirically evaluated. A physical prototype system was constructed, employing a Dobot Magician robotic manipulator, vision enclosure, imaging system, conveyor, sensing unit and control system. Over 4,000 trials were conducted utilising 100 objects. Experimentation showed that robotic manipulation quality could be improved by 10.3% when selecting to optimise for the proposed metrics—quantified by a metric related to translational error. Trials further demonstrated a grasp success rate of 99.3% for known objects and 98.9% for objects for which a priori information is unavailable. For unknown objects, this equated to an improvement of approximately 10% relative to other similar methodologies in literature. A 5.3% reduction in grasp rate was observed when removing the metrics as selection criteria for the prototype system. The system operated at approximately 1 Hz when contemporary hardware was employed. Experimentation demonstrated that selecting a grasp pose based on the proposed metrics improved grasp rates by up to 4.6% for known objects and 2.5% for unknown objects—compared to selecting for grasp rate alone.     Human-like arm motion generation: a review

    In the last decade, the objectives outlined by the needs of personal robotics have led to the rise of new biologically-inspired techniques for arm motion planning. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent research on the generation of human-like arm movements in humanoid and manipulation robotic systems. Search methods and inclusion criteria are described. The studies are analyzed taking into consideration the sources of publication, the experimental settings, the type of movements, the technical approach, and the human motor principles that have been used to inspire and assess human-likeness. Results show that there is a strong focus on the generation of single-arm reaching movements and biomimetic-based methods. However, there has been poor attention to manipulation, obstacle-avoidance mechanisms, and dual-arm motion generation. For these reasons, human-like arm motion generation may not fully respect human behavioral and neurological key features and may result restricted to specific tasks of human-robot interaction.     Human to robot hand motion mapping methods: review and classification

    In this article, the variety of approaches proposed in literature to address the problem of mapping human to robot hand motions are summarized and discussed. We particularly attempt to organize under macro-categories the great quantity of presented methods, that are often difficult to be seen from a general point of view due to different fields of application, specific use of algorithms, terminology and declared goals of the mappings. Firstly, a brief historical overview is reported, in order to provide a look on the emergence of the human to robot hand mapping problem as a both conceptual and analytical challenge that is still open nowadays. Thereafter, the survey mainly focuses on a classification of modern mapping methods under six categories: direct joint, direct Cartesian, taskoriented, dimensionality reduction based, pose recognition based and hybrid mappings. For each of these categories, the general view that associates the related reported studies is provided, and representative references are highlighted.     Design and Implement Towards Enhanced Physical Interactive Performance Robot Bodies

    In this thesis, it will introduce the design principle and implement details towards enhanced physical interactive performance robot bodies, which are more specically focused on under actuated principle robotic hands and articulated leg robots. Since they both signicantly function as the physical interactive robot bodies against external environment, while their current performance can hardly satisfy the requirement of undertaking missions in real application. Regarding to the enhanced physical interactive performances, my work will emphasis on the three following specific functionalities, high energy efficiency, high strength and physical sturdiness in both robotics actuation and mechanism. For achieving the aforementioned targets, multiple design methods have been applied, rstly the elastic energy storage elements and compliant actuation have been adopted in legged robots as Asymmetrical Compliant Actuation (ACA), implemented for not only single joint but also multiple joints as mono and biarticulation congurations in order to achieve higher energy effciency motion. Secondly the under actuated principle and modular nger design concept have been utilized on the development of robotic hands for enhancing the grasping strength and physical sturdiness meanwhile maintaining the manipulation dexterity. Lastly, a novel high payload active tuning Parallel Elastic Actuation (PEA) and Series Elastic Actuation (SEA) have been adopted on legged robots for augmenting energy eciency and physical sturdiness. My thesis contribution relies on the novel design and implement of robotics bodies for enhancing physical interactive performance and we experimentally veried the design effectiveness in specic designed scenario and practical applications

    Grasp plannind under task-specific contact constraints

    Several aspects have to be addressed before realizing the dream of a robotic hand-arm system with human-like capabilities, ranging from the consolidation of a proper mechatronic design, to the development of precise, lightweight sensors and actuators, to the efficient planning and control of the articular forces and motions required for interaction with the environment. This thesis provides solution algorithms for a main problem within the latter aspect, known as the {\em grasp planning} problem: Given a robotic system formed by a multifinger hand attached to an arm, and an object to be grasped, both with a known geometry and location in 3-space, determine how the hand-arm system should be moved without colliding with itself or with the environment, in order to firmly grasp the object in a suitable way. Central to our algorithms is the explicit consideration of a given set of hand-object contact constraints to be satisfied in the final grasp configuration, imposed by the particular manipulation task to be performed with the object. This is a distinguishing feature from other grasp planning algorithms given in the literature, where a means of ensuring precise hand-object contact locations in the resulting grasp is usually not provided. These conventional algorithms are fast, and nicely suited for planning grasps for pick-an-place operations with the object, but not for planning grasps required for a specific manipulation of the object, like those necessary for holding a pen, a pair of scissors, or a jeweler's screwdriver, for instance, when writing, cutting a paper, or turning a screw, respectively. To be able to generate such highly-selective grasps, we assume that a number of surface regions on the hand are to be placed in contact with a number of corresponding regions on the object, and enforce the fulfilment of such constraints on the obtained solutions from the very beginning, in addition to the usual constraints of grasp restrainability, manipulability and collision avoidance. The proposed algorithms can be applied to robotic hands of arbitrary structure, possibly considering compliance in the joints and the contacts if desired, and they can accommodate general patch-patch contact constraints, instead of more restrictive contact types occasionally considered in the literature. It is worth noting, also, that while common force-closure or manipulability indices are used to asses the quality of grasps, no particular assumption is made on the mathematical properties of the quality index to be used, so that any quality criterion can be accommodated in principle. The algorithms have been tested and validated on numerous situations involving real mechanical hands and typical objects, and find applications in classical or emerging contexts like service robotics, telemedicine, space exploration, prosthetics, manipulation in hazardous environments, or human-robot interaction in general

    A Continuous Grasp Representation for the Imitation Learning of Grasps on Humanoid Robots

    Models and methods are presented which enable a humanoid robot to learn reusable, adaptive grasping skills. Mechanisms and principles in human grasp behavior are studied. The findings are used to develop a grasp representation capable of retaining specific motion characteristics and of adapting to different objects and tasks. Based on the representation a framework is proposed which enables the robot to observe human grasping, learn grasp representations, and infer executable grasping actions
