Blending the physical and the digital through conceptual spaces
The rise of the Internet facilitates an ever increasing growth of virtual, i.e. digital spaces which co-exist with the physical environment, i.e. the physical space. In that, the question arises, how physical and digital space can interact synchronously. While sensors provide a means to continuously observe the physical space, several issues arise with respect to mapping sensor data streams to digital spaces, for instance, structured linked data, formally represented through symbolic Semantic Web (SW) standards such as OWL or RDF. The challenge is to bridge between symbolic knowledge representations and the measured data collected by sensors. In particular, one needs to map a given set of arbitrary sensor data to a particular set of symbolic knowledge representations, e.g. ontology instances. This task is particularly challenging due to the vast variety of possible sensor measurements. Conceptual Spaces (CS) provide a means to represent knowledge in geometrical vector spaces in order to enable computation of similarities between knowledge entities by means of distance metrics. We propose an approach which allows to refine symbolic concepts as CS and to ground ontology instances to so-called prototypical members which are vectors in the CS. By computing similarities in terms of spatial distances between a given set of sensor measurements and a finite set of CS members, the most similar instance can be identified. In that, we provide a means to bridge between the physical space, as observed by sensors, and the digital space made up of symbolic representations
Interoperability in the OpenDreamKit Project: The Math-in-the-Middle Approach
OpenDreamKit --- "Open Digital Research Environment Toolkit for the
Advancement of Mathematics" --- is an H2020 EU Research Infrastructure project
that aims at supporting, over the period 2015--2019, the ecosystem of
open-source mathematical software systems. From that, OpenDreamKit will deliver
a flexible toolkit enabling research groups to set up Virtual Research
Environments, customised to meet the varied needs of research projects in pure
mathematics and applications.
An important step in the OpenDreamKit endeavor is to foster the
interoperability between a variety of systems, ranging from computer algebra
systems over mathematical databases to front-ends. This is the mission of the
integration work package (WP6). We report on experiments and future plans with
the \emph{Math-in-the-Middle} approach. This information architecture consists
in a central mathematical ontology that documents the domain and fixes a joint
vocabulary, combined with specifications of the functionalities of the various
systems. Interaction between systems can then be enriched by pivoting off this
information architecture.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

Automatically bridging the semantic gap in machine introspection
Disclosed are various embodiments that facilitate automatically bridging the semantic gap in machine introspection. It may be determined that a program executed by a first virtual machine is requested to introspect a second virtual machine. A system call execution context of the program may be determined in response to determining that the program is requested to introspect the second virtual machine. Redirectable data in a memory of the second virtual machine may be identified based at least in part on the system call execution context of the program. The program may be configured to access the redirectable data. In various embodiments, the program may be able to modify the redirectable data, thereby facilitating configuration, reconfiguration, and recovery operations to be performed on the second virtual machine from within the first virtual machine.Board of Regents, University of Texas Syste
Bioinformatics service reconciliation by heterogeneous schema transformation
This paper focuses on the problem of bioinformatics service reconciliation in a generic and scalable manner so as to enhance interoperability in a highly evolving field. Using XML as a common representation format, but also supporting existing flat-file representation formats, we propose an approach for the scalable semi-automatic reconciliation of services, possibly invoked from within a scientific workflows tool. Service reconciliation may use the AutoMed heterogeneous data integration system as an intermediary service, or may use AutoMed to produce services that mediate between services. We discuss the application of our approach for the reconciliation of services in an example bioinformatics workflow. The main contribution of this research is an architecture for the scalable reconciliation of bioinformatics services
