    An integral sliding-mode parallel control approach for general nonlinear systems via piecewise affine linear models

    The fundamental problem of stabilizing a general nonaffine continuous-time nonlinear system is investigated via piecewise affine linear models (PALMs) in this article. A novel integral sliding-mode parallel control (ISMPC) approach is developed, where an uncertain piecewise affine system (PWA) is constructed to model a nonaffine continuous-time nonlinear system equivalently on a compact region containing the origin. A piecewise sliding-mode parallel controller is designed to globally stabilize the PALM and, consequently, to semiglobally stabilize the original nonlinear system. The proposed scheme enjoys three favorable features: (i) some restrictions on the system input channel are eliminated, thus the developed method is more relaxed compared with the published approaches; (ii) it is convenient to be used to deal with both matched and unmatched uncertainties of the system; and (iii) the proposed piecewise parallel controller generates smooth control signals even around the boundaries between different subspaces, which makes the developed control strategy more implementable and reliable. Moreover, we provide discussions about the universality analysis of the developed control strategy for two kinds of typical nonlinear systems. Simulation results from two numerical examples further demonstrate the performance of the developed control approach

    Fuzzy control turns 50: 10 years later

    In 2015, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets, ten years after the main milestones regarding its applications in fuzzy control in their 40th birthday were reviewed in FSS, see [1]. Ten years is at the same time a long period and short time thinking to the inner dynamics of research. This paper, presented for these 50 years of Fuzzy Sets is taking into account both thoughts. A first part presents a quick recap of the history of fuzzy control: from model-free design, based on human reasoning to quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) model-based control design via some milestones, and key applications. The second part shows where we arrived and what the improvements are since the milestone of the first 40 years.     An adaptive extended fuzzy function state-observer based control with unknown control direction

    In this paper, a novel adaptive extended fuzzy function state observer based controller is proposed to control a class of unknown or uncertain nonlinear systems. The controller uses Nussbaum-gain technique from literature to prevent controller singularity with unknown control direction and the controller degree of freedom is increased. A state observer which employs the adaptive extended fuzzy function system to approximate a nonlinear system dynamics and estimates the unmeasurable state. The stability of closed-loop control system are shown using Lyapunov stability criterion and Nussbaum function property. The proposed and conventional fuzzy system based controllers are designed to control an inverted pendulum in simulation and a flexible-joint manipulator in real-time experiment. The integral of absoulte error (IAE) of tracking, integral of squared error (ISE) of tracking and integral of required absolute control signal (IA U) performances are compared in applications. The aim of the paper is not only to improve the tracking performances, but also to implement the adaptive extended fuzzy function based controller to a real-time system and conduct the tracking with unknown control direction

    Type-2 Fuzzy Hybrid Controller Network for Robotic Systems

    Dynamic control, including robotic control, faces both the theoretical challenge of obtaining accurate system models and the practical difficulty of defining uncertain system bounds. To facilitate such challenges, this paper proposes a control system consisting of a novel type of fuzzy neural network and a robust compensator controller. The new fuzzy neural network is implemented by integrating a number of key components embedded in a Type-2 fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) and a brain emotional learning controller (BELC) network, thereby mimicking an ideal sliding mode controller. The system inputs are fed into the neural network through a Type-2 fuzzy inference system (T2FIS), with the results subsequently piped into sensory and emotional channels which jointly produce the final outputs of the network. That is, the proposed network estimates the nonlinear equations representing the ideal sliding mode controllers using a powerful compensator controller with the support of T2FIS and BELC, guaranteeing robust tracking of the dynamics of the controlled systems. The adaptive dynamic tuning laws of the network are developed by exploiting the popular brain emotional learning rule and the Lyapunov function. The proposed system was applied to a robot manipulator and a mobile robot, demonstrating its efficacy and potential; and a comparative study with alternatives indicates a significant improvement by the proposed system in performing the intelligent dynamic control

    Design and Implementation of an Artificial Neural Network Controller for Quadrotor Flight in Confined Environment

    Quadrotors offer practical solutions for many applications, such as emergency rescue, surveillance, military operations, videography and many more. For this reason, they have recently attracted the attention of research and industry. Even though they have been intensively studied, quadrotors still suffer from some challenges that limit their use, such as trajectory measurement, attitude estimation, obstacle avoidance, safety precautions, and land cybersecurity. One major problem is flying in a confined environment, such as closed buildings and tunnels, where the aerodynamics around the quadrotor are affected by close proximity objects, which result in tracking performance deterioration, and sometimes instability. To address this problem, researchers followed three different approaches; the Modeling approach, which focuses on the development of a precise dynamical model that accounts for the different aerodynamic effects, the Sensor Integration approach, which focuses on the addition of multiple sensors to the quadrotor and applying algorithms to stabilize the quadrotor based on their measurements, and the Controller Design approach, which focuses on the development of an adaptive and robust controller. In this research, a learning controller is proposed as a solution for the issue of quadrotor trajectory control in confined environments. This controller utilizes Artificial Neural Networks to adjust for the unknown aerodynamics on-line. A systematic approach for controller design is developed, so that, the approach could be followed for the development of controllers for other nonlinear systems of similar form. One goal for this research is to develop a global controller that could be applied to any quadrotor with minimal adjustment. A novel Artificial Neural Network structure is presented that increases learning efficiency and speed. In addition, a new learning algorithm is developed for the Artificial Neural Network, when utilized with the developed controller. Simulation results for the designed controller when applied to the Qball-X4 quadrotor are presented that show the effectiveness of the proposed Artificial Neural Network structure and the developed learning algorithm in the presence of variety of different unknown aerodynamics. These results are confirmed with real time experimentation, as the developed controller was successfully applied to Quanser’s Qball-X4 quadrotor for the flight control in confined environment. The practical challenges associated with the application of such a controller for quadrotor flight in confined environment are analyzed and adequately resolved to achieve an acceptable tracking performance

    Performance comparison of structured H∞ based looptune and LQR for a 4-DOF robotic manipulator

    We explore looptune, a MATLAB-based structured H1 synthesis technique in the context of robotics. Position control of a 4 Degree of Freedom (DOF) serial robotic manipulator developed using Simulink is the problem under consideration. Three full state feedback control systems were developed, analyzed and compared for both steady-state and transient performance using the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and looptune. Initially, a single gain feedback controller was synthesized using LQR. This system was then modified by augmenting the state feedback controller with Proportional Integral (PI) and Integral regulators, thereby creating a second and third control system respectively. In both the second and third control systems, the LQR synthesized gain and additional gains were further tuned using looptune to achieve improvement in performance. The second and third systems were also compared in terms of tracking a time-dependent trajectory. Finally, the LQR and looptune synthesized controllers were tested for robustness by simultaneously increasing the mass of each manipulator link. In comparison to LQR, the second system consisting of Single Input Single Output (SISO) PI controllers and the state feedback matrix succeeded in meeting the control objectives in terms of performance, optimality, trajectory tracking, and robustness. The third system did not improve performance in contrast to LQR, but still showed robustness under mass variation. In conclusion, our results have shown looptune to have a comparatively better performance over LQR thereby highlighting its promising potential for future emerging control system applications

    Artificial intelligence-based speed control of DTC induction motor drives: A comparative study

    The design of the speed controller greatly affects the performance of an electric drive. A common strategy to control an induction machine is to use direct torque control combined with a PI speed controller These schemes require proper and continuous tuning and therefore adaptive controllers are proposed to replace conventional PI controllers to improve the drive\u27s performance. This paper presents a comparison between four different speed controller design strategies based on artificial intelligence techniques: two are based on tuning of conventional PI controllers, the third makes use of a fuzzy logic controller and the last is based oil hybrid fuzzy sliding mode control theory. To provide a numerical comparison between different controllers, a performance index based on speed error is assigned. All methods are applied to the direct torque control scheme and each control strategy has been tested for its robustness and disturbance rejection ability. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
