    Modélisation des comportements de recherche basé sur les interactions des utilisateurs

    Les utilisateurs de systèmes d'information divisent normalement les tâches en une séquence de plusieurs étapes pour les résoudre. En particulier, les utilisateurs divisent les tâches de recherche en séquences de requêtes, en interagissant avec les systèmes de recherche pour mener à bien le processus de recherche d'informations. Les interactions des utilisateurs sont enregistrées dans des journaux de requêtes, ce qui permet de développer des modèles pour apprendre automatiquement les comportements de recherche à partir des interactions des utilisateurs avec les systèmes de recherche. Ces modèles sont à la base de multiples applications d'assistance aux utilisateurs qui aident les systèmes de recherche à être plus interactifs, faciles à utiliser, et cohérents. Par conséquent, nous proposons les contributions suivantes : un modèle neuronale pour apprendre à détecter les limites des tâches de recherche dans les journaux de requête ; une architecture de regroupement profond récurrent qui apprend simultanément les représentations de requête et regroupe les requêtes en tâches de recherche ; un modèle non supervisé et indépendant d'utilisateur pour l'identification des tâches de recherche prenant en charge les requêtes dans seize langues ; et un modèle de tâche de recherche multilingue, une approche non supervisée qui modélise simultanément l'intention de recherche de l'utilisateur et les tâches de recherche. Les modèles proposés améliorent les méthodes existantes de modélisation, en tenant compte de la confidentialité des utilisateurs, des réponses en temps réel et de l'accessibilité linguistique. Le respect de la vie privée de l'utilisateur est une préoccupation majeure, tandis que des réponses rapides sont essentielles pour les systèmes de recherche qui interagissent avec les utilisateurs en temps réel, en particulier dans la recherche par conversation. Dans le même temps, l'accessibilité linguistique est essentielle pour aider les utilisateurs du monde entier, qui interagissent avec les systèmes de recherche dans de nombreuses langues. Les contributions proposées peuvent bénéficier à de nombreuses applications d'assistance aux utilisateurs, en aidant ces derniers à mieux résoudre leurs tâches de recherche lorsqu'ils accèdent aux systèmes de recherche pour répondre à leurs besoins d'information.Users of information systems normally divide tasks in a sequence of multiple steps to solve them. In particular, users divide search tasks into sequences of queries, interacting with search systems to carry out the information seeking process. User interactions are registered on search query logs, enabling the development of models to automatically learn search patterns from the users' interactions with search systems. These models underpin multiple user assisting applications that help search systems to be more interactive, user-friendly, and coherent. User assisting applications include query suggestion, the ranking of search results based on tasks, query reformulation analysis, e-commerce applications, retrieval of advertisement, query-term prediction, mapping of queries to search tasks, and so on. Consequently, we propose the following contributions: a neural model for learning to detect search task boundaries in query logs; a recurrent deep clustering architecture that simultaneously learns query representations through self-training, and cluster queries into groups of search tasks; Multilingual Graph-Based Clustering, an unsupervised, user-agnostic model for search task identification supporting queries in sixteen languages; and Language-agnostic Search Task Model, an unsupervised approach that simultaneously models user search intent and search tasks. Proposed models improve on existing methods for modeling user interactions, taking into account user privacy, realtime response times, and language accessibility. User privacy is a major concern in Ethics for intelligent systems, while fast responses are critical for search systems interacting with users in realtime, particularly in conversational search. At the same time, language accessibility is essential to assist users worldwide, who interact with search systems in many languages. The proposed contributions can benefit many user assisting applications, helping users to better solve their search tasks when accessing search systems to fulfill their information needs

    A Topical Approach to Capturing Customer Insight In Social Media

    The age of social media has opened new opportunities for businesses. This flourishing wealth of information is outside traditional channels and frameworks of classical marketing research, including that of Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM). Textual data, in particular, poses many challenges that data analysis practitioners must tackle. Social media constitute massive, heterogeneous, and noisy document sources. Industrial data acquisition processes include some amount of ETL. However, the variability of noise in the data and the heterogeneity induced by different sources create the need for ad-hoc tools. Put otherwise, customer insight extraction in fully unsupervised, noisy contexts is an arduous task. This research addresses the challenge of fully unsupervised topic extraction in noisy, Big Data contexts. We present three approaches we built on the Variational Autoencoder framework: the Embedded Dirichlet Process, the Embedded Hierarchical Dirichlet Process, and the time-aware Dynamic Embedded Dirichlet Process. These nonparametric approaches concerning topics present the particularity of determining word embeddings and topic embeddings. These embeddings do not require transfer learning, but knowledge transfer remains possible. We test these approaches on benchmark and automotive industry-related datasets from a real-world use case. We show that our models achieve equal to better performance than state-of-the-art methods and that the field of topic modeling would benefit from improved evaluation metrics

Gran parte de ese texto contiene opiniones acerca de multitud de entidades, productos, servicios, etc. Dada la creciente necesidad de disponer de medios automatizados para analizar, procesar y explotar esa información, las técnicas de análisis de sentimiento han recibido gran cantidad de atención por parte de la industria y la comunidad científica durante la última década y media. No obstante, muchas de las técnicas empleadas suelen requerir de entrenamiento supervisado utilizando para ello ejemplos anotados manualmente, u otros recursos lingüísticos relacionados con un idioma o dominio de aplicación específicos. Esto limita la aplicación de este tipo de técnicas, ya que dicho recursos y ejemplos anotados no son sencillos de obtener. En esta tesis se explora una serie de métodos para realizar diversos análisis automáticos de texto en el marco del análisis de sentimiento, incluyendo la obtención automática de términos de un dominio, palabras que expresan opinión, polaridad del sentimiento de dichas palabras (positivas o negativas), etc. Finalmente se propone y se evalúa un método que combina representación continua de palabras (continuous word embeddings) y topic-modelling inspirado en la técnica de Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), para obtener un sistema de análisis de sentimiento basado en aspectos (ABSA), que sólo necesita unas pocas palabras semilla para procesar textos de un idioma o dominio determinados. De este modo, la adaptación a otro idioma o dominio se reduce a la traducción de las palabras semilla correspondientes

    The Democratization of News - Analysis and Behavior Modeling of Users in the Context of Online News Consumption

    Die Erfindung des Internets ebnete den Weg für die Demokratisierung von Information. Die Tatsache, dass Nachrichten für die breite Öffentlichkeit zugänglicher wurden, barg wichtige politische Versprechen, wie zum Beispiel das Erreichen von zuvor uninformierten und daher oft inaktiven Bürgern. Diese konnten sich nun dank des Internets tagesaktuell über das politische Geschehen informieren und selbst politisch engagieren. Während viele Politiker und Journalisten ein Jahrzehnt lang mit dieser Entwicklung zufrieden waren, änderte sich die Situation mit dem Aufkommen der sozialen Online-Netzwerke (OSN). Diese OSNs sind heute nahezu allgegenwärtig – so beziehen inzwischen 67%67\% der Amerikaner zumindest einen Teil ihrer Nachrichten über die sozialen Medien. Dieser Trend hat die Kosten für die Veröffentlichung von Inhalten weiter gesenkt. Dies sah zunächst nach einer positiven Entwicklung aus, stellt inzwischen jedoch ein ernsthaftes Problem für Demokratien dar. Anstatt dass eine schier unendliche Menge an leicht zugänglichen Informationen uns klüger machen, wird die Menge an Inhalten zu einer Belastung. Eine ausgewogene Nachrichtenauswahl muss einer Flut an Beiträgen und Themen weichen, die durch das digitale soziale Umfeld des Nutzers gefiltert werden. Dies fördert die politische Polarisierung und ideologische Segregation. Mehr als die Hälfte der OSN-Nutzer trauen zudem den Nachrichten, die sie lesen, nicht mehr (54%54\% machen sich Sorgen wegen Falschnachrichten). In dieses Bild passt, dass Studien berichten, dass Nutzer von OSNs dem Populismus extrem linker und rechter politischer Akteure stärker ausgesetzt sind, als Personen ohne Zugang zu sozialen Medien. Um die negativen Effekt dieser Entwicklung abzumildern, trägt meine Arbeit zum einen zum Verständnis des Problems bei und befasst sich mit Grundlagenforschung im Bereich der Verhaltensmodellierung. Abschließend beschäftigen wir uns mit der Gefahr der Beeinflussung der Internetnutzer durch soziale Bots und präsentieren eine auf Verhaltensmodellierung basierende Lösung. Zum besseren Verständnis des Nachrichtenkonsums deutschsprachiger Nutzer in OSNs, haben wir deren Verhalten auf Twitter analysiert und die Reaktionen auf kontroverse - teils verfassungsfeindliche - und nicht kontroverse Inhalte verglichen. Zusätzlich untersuchten wir die Existenz von Echokammern und ähnlichen Phänomenen. Hinsichtlich des Nutzerverhaltens haben wir uns auf Netzwerke konzentriert, die ein komplexeres Nutzerverhalten zulassen. Wir entwickelten probabilistische Verhaltensmodellierungslösungen für das Clustering und die Segmentierung von Zeitserien. Neben den Beiträgen zum Verständnis des Problems haben wir Lösungen zur Erkennung automatisierter Konten entwickelt. Diese Bots nehmen eine wichtige Rolle in der frühen Phase der Verbreitung von Fake News ein. Unser Expertenmodell - basierend auf aktuellen Deep-Learning-Lösungen - identifiziert, z. B., automatisierte Accounts anhand ihres Verhaltens. Meine Arbeit sensibilisiert für diese negative Entwicklung und befasst sich mit der Grundlagenforschung im Bereich der Verhaltensmodellierung. Auch wird auf die Gefahr der Beeinflussung durch soziale Bots eingegangen und eine auf Verhaltensmodellierung basierende Lösung präsentiert

    Interactions in Information Spread

    Since the development of writing 5000 years ago, human-generated data gets produced at an ever-increasing pace. Classical archival methods aimed at easing information retrieval. Nowadays, archiving is not enough anymore. The amount of data that gets generated daily is beyond human comprehension, and appeals for new information retrieval strategies. Instead of referencing every single data piece as in traditional archival techniques, a more relevant approach consists in understanding the overall ideas conveyed in data flows. To spot such general tendencies, a precise comprehension of the underlying data generation mechanisms is required. In the rich literature tackling this problem, the question of information interaction remains nearly unexplored. First, we investigate the frequency of such interactions. Building on recent advances made in Stochastic Block Modelling, we explore the role of interactions in several social networks. We find that interactions are rare in these datasets. Then, we wonder how interactions evolve over time. Earlier data pieces should not have an everlasting influence on ulterior data generation mechanisms. We model this using dynamic network inference advances. We conclude that interactions are brief. Finally, we design a framework that jointly models rare and brief interactions based on Dirichlet-Hawkes Processes. We argue that this new class of models fits brief and sparse interaction modelling. We conduct a large-scale application on Reddit and find that interactions play a minor role in this dataset. From a broader perspective, our work results in a collection of highly flexible models and in a rethinking of core concepts of machine learning. Consequently, we open a range of novel perspectives both in terms of real-world applications and in terms of technical contributions to machine learning.Comment: PhD thesis defended on 2022/09/1

    Conversational Movement Dynamics and Nonverbal Indicators of Second Language Development: A Microgenetic Approach

    This dissertation study extends on current understandings of gesture and embodied interaction with the eco-social environment in second language development (SLD) while introducing new aspects of movement analysis through dynamical modeling. To understand the role of embodiment during learning activities, a second language learning task has been selected. Dyads consisting of a non-native English-speaking student and a native English-speaking tutor were video recorded during writing consultations centered on class assignments provided by the student. Cross-recurrence quantification analysis was used to measure interactional movement synchrony between the members of each dyad. Results indicate that students with varied English proficiency levels synchronize movements with their tutors over brief, frequent periods of time. Synchronous movement pattern complexity is highly variable across and within the dyads. Additionally, co-speech gesture and gesture independent of speech were analyzed qualitatively to identify the role of gesture as related to SLD events. A range of movement types were used during developmental events by the students and tutors to interact with their partner. The results indicated that language development occurs within a movement rich context through negotiated interaction which depends on a combination of synchronized and synergistic movements. Synchronized movements exhibited complex, dynamical behaviors including variability, self-organization, and emergent properties. Synergistic movement emergence revealed how the dualistic presence of the self/other in each dyad creates a functioning intersubjective space. Overall, the dyads demonstrated that movement is a salient factor in the writing consultation activity

    Investigations into the patient voice: a multi-perspective analysis of inflammation

    The patient is the expert of their medical journey and their experiences go largely unheard in clinical practice. Understanding the patient is important as bridging gaps in the medical domain enhances clinical knowledge, benefiting patient care in addition to improving quality of life. Valuable solutions to these problems lie at the intersection of Machine learning and sentiment analysis; through ontologies, semantic similarity, and clustering. In this thesis, I present challenges and solutions that explore patient quality of life pertaining to two inflammatory diseases: Uveitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which are immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and often undifferentiated. This thesis explores how a patient’s condition and inflammation influences their voice and quality of life via sentiment analysis, clustering, and semantic characterisations. Methods With guidance from domain experts and a foundation derived from clinical consensus documents, I created an application ontology, Ocular Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases Ontology (OcIMIDo), which was enhanced with patient-preferred terms curated from online forum conversations, using a semi-automated statistical approach - with application of annotating term-frequency and sentiment analysis. Semantic similarity was explored using a preexisting embedding model derived from clinical letters to train other models consisting of patient-generated texts for systematic comparison of the clinician and patient voice. In a final experimental chapter, blood markers were clustered and analysed with their corresponding quantitative quality of life outcomes using patients in the UK Biobank with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Results OcIMIDo is the first of its kind in ophthalmology and sentiment analysis revealed that first posts were more negative compared to replies. Systematic comparisons of embedding models revealed frequent misspellings from clinicians; use of abbreviations from patients; and patient priorities - models performed better when the clinical domain was extended with equivalent-sized, patient-generated data. Clusters unveiled insight into the presence of inflammatory stress and the relationship with happiness and the presence of a maternal smoking history with a Crohn’s disease diagnosis. Summary Patient-preferred terms prove the patient voice provides meaningful text mining and fruitful sentiment analysis, revealing the role a forum plays on patients; semantic similarity highlighted potential novel disease associations and the patient lexicon; and clustering blood markers featured clusters presenting a relationship with sentiment. In summary, this deeper knowledge of quality of life biomarkers through the patient voice can benefit the clinical domain and patient outcomes as understanding the patient can improve the clinical-patient relationship and communication standards: all benefiting the diagnosis process, developing treatment plans, and shortening these intensive time hauls in clinical practice
