    Bio-signal based control in assistive robots: a survey

    Recently, bio-signal based control has been gradually deployed in biomedical devices and assistive robots for improving the quality of life of disabled and elderly people, among which electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) bio-signals are being used widely. This paper reviews the deployment of these bio-signals in the state of art of control systems. The main aim of this paper is to describe the techniques used for (i) collecting EMG and EEG signals and diving these signals into segments (data acquisition and data segmentation stage), (ii) dividing the important data and removing redundant data from the EMG and EEG segments (feature extraction stage), and (iii) identifying categories from the relevant data obtained in the previous stage (classification stage). Furthermore, this paper presents a summary of applications controlled through these two bio-signals and some research challenges in the creation of these control systems. Finally, a brief conclusion is summarized

    Distributed Spacing Stochastic Feature Selection and its Application to Textile Classification

    Many situations require the need to quickly and accurately locate dismounted individuals in a variety of environments. In conjunction with other dismount detection techniques, being able to detect and classify clothing (textiles) provides a more comprehensive and complete dismount characterization capability. Because textile classification depends on distinguishing between different material types, hyperspectral data, which consists of several hundred spectral channels sampled from a continuous electromagnetic spectrum, is used as a data source. However, a hyperspectral image generates vast amounts of information and can be computationally intractable to analyze. A primary means to reduce the computational complexity is to use feature selection to identify a reduced set of features that effectively represents a specific class. While many feature selection methods exist, applying them to continuous data results in closely clustered feature sets that offer little redundancy and fail in the presence of noise. This dissertation presents a novel feature selection method that limits feature redundancy and improves classification. This method uses a stochastic search algorithm in conjunction with a heuristic that combines measures of distance and dependence to select features. Comparison testing between the presented feature selection method and existing methods uses hyperspectral data and image wavelet decompositions. The presented method produces feature sets with an average correlation of 0.40-0.54. This is significantly lower than the 0.70-0.99 of the existing feature selection methods. In terms of classification accuracy, the feature sets produced outperform those of other methods, to a significance of 0.025, and show greater robustness under noise representative of a hyperspectral imaging system

    Quality and inspection of machining operations: Review of condition monitoring and CMM inspection techniques 2000 to present

    In order to consistently produce quality parts, many aspects of the manufacturing process must be carefully monitored, controlled, and measured. The methods and techniques by which to accomplish these tasks has been the focus of numerous studies in recent years. With the rapid advances in computing technology, the complexity and overhead that can be feasibly incorporated in any developed technique has dramatically improved. Thus, techniques that would have been impractical for implementation just a few years ago can now be realistically applied. This rapid growth has resulted in a wealth of new capabilities for improving part and process quality and reliability. In this paper, overviews of recent advances that apply to machining are presented. Moreover, due to the relative significance of two particular machining aspects, this review focuses specifically on research publications pertaining to using tool condition monitoring and coordinate measurement machines to improve the machining process. Tool condition has a direct effect on part quality and is discussed first. The application of tool condition monitoring as it applies to turning, drilling, milling, and grinding is presented. The subsequent section provides recommendations for future research opportunities. The ensuing section focuses on the use of coordinate measuring machines in conjunction with machining and is subdivided with respect to integration with machining tools, inspection planning and efficiency, advanced controller feedback, machine error compensation, and on-line tool calibration, in that specific order and concludes with recommendations regarding where future needs remain

    Exploiting Robust Multivariate Statistics and Data Driven Techniques for Prognosis and Health Management

    This thesis explores state of the art robust multivariate statistical methods and data driven techniques to holistically perform prognostics and health management (PHM). This provides a means to enable the early detection, diagnosis and prognosis of future asset failures. In this thesis, the developed PHM methodology is applied to wind turbine drive train components, specifically focussed on planetary gearbox bearings and gears. A novel methodology for the identification of relevant time-domain statistical features based upon robust statistical process control charts is presented for high frequency bearing accelerometer data. In total, 28 time-domain statistical features were evaluated for their capabilities as leading indicators of degradation. The results of this analysis describe the extensible multivariate “Moments’ model” for the encapsulation of bearing operational behaviour. This is presented, enabling the early degradation of detection, predictive diagnostics and estimation of remaining useful life (RUL). Following this, an extended physics of failure model based upon low frequency SCADA data for the quantification of wind turbine gearbox condition is described. This extends the state of the art, whilst defining robust performance charts for quantifying component condition. Normalisation against loading of the turbine and transient states based upon empirical data is performed in the bivariate domain, with extensibility into the multivariate domain if necessary. Prognosis of asset condition is found to be possible with the assistance of artificial neural networks in order to provide business intelligence to the planning and scheduling of effective maintenance actions. These multivariate condition models are explored with multivariate distance and similarity metrics for to exploit traditional data mining techniques for tacit knowledge extraction, ensemble diagnosis and prognosis. Estimation of bearing remaining useful life is found to be possible, with the derived technique correlating strongly to bearing life (r = .96

    Advances in power quality analysis techniques for electrical machines and drives: a review

    The electric machines are the elements most used at an industry level, and they represent the major power consumption of the productive processes. Particularly speaking, among all electric machines, the motors and their drives play a key role since they literally allow the motion interchange in the industrial processes; it could be said that they are the medullar column for moving the rest of the mechanical parts. Hence, their proper operation must be guaranteed in order to raise, as much as possible, their efficiency, and, as consequence, bring out the economic benefits. This review presents a general overview of the reported works that address the efficiency topic in motors and drives and in the power quality of the electric grid. This study speaks about the relationship existing between the motors and drives that induces electric disturbances into the grid, affecting its power quality, and also how these power disturbances present in the electrical network adversely affect, in turn, the motors and drives. In addition, the reported techniques that tackle the detection, classification, and mitigations of power quality disturbances are discussed. Additionally, several works are reviewed in order to present the panorama that show the evolution and advances in the techniques and tendencies in both senses: motors and drives affecting the power source quality and the power quality disturbances affecting the efficiency of motors and drives. A discussion of trends in techniques and future work about power quality analysis from the motors and drives efficiency viewpoint is provided. Finally, some prompts are made about alternative methods that could help in overcome the gaps until now detected in the reported approaches referring to the detection, classification and mitigation of power disturbances with views toward the improvement of the efficiency of motors and drives.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    A computational visual saliency model for images.

    Human eyes receive an enormous amount of information from the visual world. It is highly difficult to simultaneously process this excessive information for the human brain. Hence the human visual system will selectively process the incoming information by attending only the relevant regions of interest in a scene. Visual saliency characterises some parts of a scene that appears to stand out from its neighbouring regions and attracts the human gaze. Modelling saliency-based visual attention has been an active research area in recent years. Saliency models have found vital importance in many areas of computer vision tasks such as image and video compression, object segmentation, target tracking, remote sensing and robotics. Many of these applications deal with high-resolution images and real-time videos and it is a challenge to process this excessive amount of information with limited computational resources. Employing saliency models in these applications will limit the processing of irrelevant information and further will improve their efficiency and performance. Therefore, a saliency model with good prediction accuracy and low computation time is highly essential. This thesis presents a low-computation wavelet-based visual saliency model designed to predict the regions of human eye fixations in images. The proposed model uses two-channel information luminance (Y) and chrominance (Cr) in YCbCr colour space for saliency computation. These two channels are decomposed to their lowest resolution using two-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to extract the local contrast features at multiple scales. The extracted local contrast features are integrated at multiple levels using a two-dimensional entropy-based feature combination scheme to derive a combined map. The combined map is normalized and enhanced using natural logarithm transformation to derive a final saliency map. The performance of the model has been evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively using two large benchmark image datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed model has achieved better prediction accuracy both qualitatively and quantitatively with a significant reduction in computation time when compared to the existing benchmark models. It has achieved nearly 25% computational savings when compared to the benchmark model with the lowest computation time

    Guidage non-intrusif d'un bras robotique à l'aide d'un bracelet myoélectrique à électrode sèche

    Depuis plusieurs années la robotique est vue comme une solution clef pour améliorer la qualité de vie des personnes ayant subi une amputation. Pour créer de nouvelles prothèses intelligentes qui peuvent être facilement intégrées à la vie quotidienne et acceptée par ces personnes, celles-ci doivent être non-intrusives, fiables et peu coûteuses. L’électromyographie de surface fournit une interface intuitive et non intrusive basée sur l’activité musculaire de l’utilisateur permettant d’interagir avec des robots. Cependant, malgré des recherches approfondies dans le domaine de la classification des signaux sEMG, les classificateurs actuels manquent toujours de fiabilité, car ils ne sont pas robustes face au bruit à court terme (par exemple, petit déplacement des électrodes, fatigue musculaire) ou à long terme (par exemple, changement de la masse musculaire et des tissus adipeux) et requiert donc de recalibrer le classifieur de façon périodique. L’objectif de mon projet de recherche est de proposer une interface myoélectrique humain-robot basé sur des algorithmes d’apprentissage par transfert et d’adaptation de domaine afin d’augmenter la fiabilité du système à long-terme, tout en minimisant l’intrusivité (au niveau du temps de préparation) de ce genre de système. L’aspect non intrusif est obtenu en utilisant un bracelet à électrode sèche possédant dix canaux. Ce bracelet (3DC Armband) est de notre (Docteur Gabriel Gagnon-Turcotte, mes co-directeurs et moi-même) conception et a été réalisé durant mon doctorat. À l’heure d’écrire ces lignes, le 3DC Armband est le bracelet sans fil pour l’enregistrement de signaux sEMG le plus performant disponible. Contrairement aux dispositifs utilisant des électrodes à base de gel qui nécessitent un rasage de l’avant-bras, un nettoyage de la zone de placement et l’application d’un gel conducteur avant l’utilisation, le brassard du 3DC peut simplement être placé sur l’avant-bras sans aucune préparation. Cependant, cette facilité d’utilisation entraîne une diminution de la qualité de l’information du signal. Cette diminution provient du fait que les électrodes sèches obtiennent un signal plus bruité que celle à base de gel. En outre, des méthodes invasives peuvent réduire les déplacements d’électrodes lors de l’utilisation, contrairement au brassard. Pour remédier à cette dégradation de l’information, le projet de recherche s’appuiera sur l’apprentissage profond, et plus précisément sur les réseaux convolutionels. Le projet de recherche a été divisé en trois phases. La première porte sur la conception d’un classifieur permettant la reconnaissance de gestes de la main en temps réel. La deuxième porte sur l’implémentation d’un algorithme d’apprentissage par transfert afin de pouvoir profiter des données provenant d’autres personnes, permettant ainsi d’améliorer la classification des mouvements de la main pour un nouvel individu tout en diminuant le temps de préparation nécessaire pour utiliser le système. La troisième phase consiste en l’élaboration et l’implémentation des algorithmes d’adaptation de domaine et d’apprentissage faiblement supervisé afin de créer un classifieur qui soit robuste au changement à long terme.For several years, robotics has been seen as a key solution to improve the quality of life of people living with upper-limb disabilities. To create new, smart prostheses that can easily be integrated into everyday life, they must be non-intrusive, reliable and inexpensive. Surface electromyography provides an intuitive interface based on a user’s muscle activity to interact with robots. However, despite extensive research in the field of sEMG signal classification, current classifiers still lack reliability due to their lack of robustness to short-term (e.g. small electrode displacement, muscle fatigue) or long-term (e.g. change in muscle mass and adipose tissue) noise. In practice, this mean that to be useful, classifier needs to be periodically re-calibrated, a time consuming process. The goal of my research project is to proposes a human-robot myoelectric interface based on transfer learning and domain adaptation algorithms to increase the reliability of the system in the long term, while at the same time reducing the intrusiveness (in terms of hardware and preparation time) of this kind of systems. The non-intrusive aspect is achieved from a dry-electrode armband featuring ten channels. This armband, named the 3DC Armband is from our (Dr. Gabriel Gagnon-Turcotte, my co-directors and myself) conception and was realized during my doctorate. At the time of writing, the 3DC Armband offers the best performance for currently available dry-electrodes, surface electromyographic armbands. Unlike gel-based electrodes which require intrusive skin preparation (i.e. shaving, cleaning the skin and applying conductive gel), the 3DC Armband can simply be placed on the forearm without any preparation. However, this ease of use results in a decrease in the quality of information. This decrease is due to the fact that the signal recorded by dry electrodes is inherently noisier than gel-based ones. In addition, other systems use invasive methods (intramuscular electromyography) to capture a cleaner signal and reduce the source of noises (e.g. electrode shift). To remedy this degradation of information resulting from the non-intrusiveness of the armband, this research project will rely on deep learning, and more specifically on convolutional networks. The research project was divided into three phases. The first is the design of a classifier allowing the recognition of hand gestures in real-time. The second is the implementation of a transfer learning algorithm to take advantage of the data recorded across multiple users, thereby improving the system’s accuracy, while decreasing the time required to use the system. The third phase is the development and implementation of a domain adaptation and self-supervised learning to enhance the classifier’s robustness to long-term changes
