    The Determination of 11B/10B and 87Sr/86Sr Isotope Ratios by Quadrupole-Based ICP-MS for the Fingerprinting of South African Wine

    The 11B/10B and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios in wines and soils of four major South African wine-producing regions have been determined by quadrupole-based ICP-MSin order to establish a fingerprint for origin verification of the wines. The 11B/10B isotope ratio was found to be a useful tool to distinguish among the wines of the selected wine regions. In addition, the use of B isotope ratios together with elemental concentrations of selected indicator elements as independent variables in a linear discriminant analysis procedure was shown to be a highly successful method to classify wine according to geographical origin. A good correlation between the B and Sr isotope ratios in wine and its provenance soil was found. Both wine and soil samples were prepared using microwave-assisted digestion followed by the isolation of boron and strontium from the sample matrix through element-specific ion exchange. Isotope ratio measurements with good precision, ~0.1 % RSD, for both boron and strontium have been obtained. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio showed limited potential as an indicator of provenance in the wine-producing regions included in this study, since the wines of only one region could be distinguished from the others.Keywords: Boron Isotope Ratio, Strontium Isotope Ratio, ICP-MS, Wine Analysis, Fingerprinting, Provenance Determinatio

    Czech wine consumers: maturing with age?

    The purpose of this study is to identify the most important motivations for drinking wine and the factors influencing wine purchase in the Czech Republic and to ascertain if there are significant differences between genders and age groups. An online survey was conducted, using e-mail and social networks, of wine consumers in one of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic. This resulted in a sample of n=237. Spearman’s correlation test was conducted to find correlations between wine consumption and age and the chi-square test for differences between genders. Four motivations were found to be significantly correlated with age – to be sociable, to be respected, because wine is considered healthy and because it belongs with a nice meal, as well as seven factors affecting wine purchase – label, provenance, brand/producer, vintage, design of the bottle, recommendations of salesperson and a preference for the lowest priced wines. As the majority of respondents came from one of the 14 Czech regions, generalizations for the whole Czech Republic cannot be made. It is recommended that future work should include more complex segmentation. This paper contributes to the literature by exploring the Czech wine market, where very little research has been conducted so far, as well as by exploring the influence of age on the motivation for wine consumption

    Mineral composition through soil-wine system of portuguese vineyards and its potential for wine traceability

    The control of geographic origin is one of a highest priority issue regarding traceability and wine authenticity. The current study aimed to examine whether elemental composition can be used for the discrimination of wines according to geographical origin, taking into account the effects of soil, winemaking process, and year of production. The elemental composition of soils, grapes, musts, and wines from three DO (Designations of Origin) and for two vintage years was determined by using the ICP-MS semi-quantitative method, followed by multivariate statistical analysis. The elemental composition of soils varied according to geological formations, and for some elements, the variation due to soil provenance was also observed in musts and wines. Li, Mn, Sr and rare-earth elements (REE) allowed wine discrimination according to vineyard. Results evidenced the influence of winemaking processes and of vintage year on the wine’s elemental composition. The mineral composition pattern is transferred through the soil-wine system, and differences observed for soils are reflected in grape musts and wines, but not for all elements. Results suggest that winemaking processes and vintage year should be taken into account for the use of elemental composition as a tool for wine traceability.     Strontium isotopic signatures for authenticity and wine geographical assessment

    The assessment of wine authenticity is of utmost importance in the current context of a growing market globalization. In the last years several studies were developed on the application of 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio for the evaluation of wine geographical origin, involving wine producing regions worldwide, evidencing its reliability as a provenance marker. Aspects such as 87Sr/86Sr relation with the vineyard substratum, analytical methodologies, and effect of technological processes have been addressed. Data has been obtained for different wine regions/PDO. Nevertheless, some important issues remain, such as the interpretation of the data from the soil (it is crucial to know the soil geochemistry), and the need for better understanding of the impacts of anthropogenic factors. Precise and accurate 87Sr/86Sr data is required for origin discrimination and analytical methods used should be officially recognized or validated in order to support comparison. Sr isotopic data can be used to build an authentic wine reference database (e.g. official or wine organization, PDO consortium), or to integrate a global database (e.g. EU wine databank). 87Sr/86Sr data combined with other discriminating parameters, namely elemental composition, can provide increasingly robust results for the identification of wine provenance.     Archaeometric analysis for provenance and content of Roman amphorae from the site of Sa Mesquida (Mallorca, Spain)

    This paper presents the results of an inorganic and organic approach to Roman amphorae found at the rural Roman site of Sa Mesquida (Mallorca). A set of amphorae were discovered in some rooms of the earlier phases of the villa. These amphorae were assigned to a general Tarraconensian and Italic provenance on a macroscopic level. In order to verify this and to accurately determine the provenance an archaeometric characterization was carried out on twelve amphorae. The analytical approach combined wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) for the chemical analysis, as well as powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy by thin-section analysis (OM) for the mineralogical and petrographic characterization. In addition, organic residue analysis by gas-chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to investigate the content of some of the amphorae for which wine was suggested on an archaeological basis. The results have allowed for a better provenance determination identifying some amphorae from specific workshops or micro-regions within ancient Tarraconensis, as well as a better definition of the Italic materials.     Cultural and rural tourism: potential synergies for a new economic development pattern. The Italian case.

    Thanks to its important naturalistic, historical, cultural and artistic heritage, Italy is one of the Countries with the greatest touristic vocation in the world. As consequence, tourism is the most important productive sector in Italian economy, with an impact just below 12% on GDP. During the long period of economic crisis that affected the major world economies, between 2008 and 2014, some parts of the Italian tourism, including seaside for example, declined. This decline, at an aggregate level, has been however balanced by the development of cultural tourism. This also thanks to the increase of external demand: the number of foreign visits went from 140 million in 2000 to more than 190 million in 2016, without any decline also over the hardest period of the above mentioned economic crisis. About 37% of external demand is attributed to expenditures for holidays in art heritage cities and they represent the most dynamic part of Italian tourism. Although with more modest absolute values, agritourism and food and wine tourism are dynamic parts of Italian tourism too and, sometimes, they are linked with cultural tourism. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the development of cultural tourism, agritourism and food and wine tourism can be a single goal of economic policy aimed at creating new growth strategies in order to overcome the effects of the economic crisis. Organizing as a single economic system the different parts of Italian tourism can be the most coherent action in order to cope with the different development needs and potentialities of Italy whose economic system is traditionally linked to the territorial values

    Intra-regional classification of grape seeds produced in Mendoza province (Argentina) by multi-elemental analysis and chemometrics tools

    The feasibility of the application of chemometric techniques associated with multi-element analysis for the classification of grape seeds according to their provenance vineyard soil was investigated. Grape seed samples from different localities of Mendoza province (Argentina) were evaluated. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the determination of twenty-nine elements (Ag, As, Ce, Co, Cs, Cu, Eu, Fe, Ga, Gd, La, Lu, Mn, Mo, Nb, Nd, Ni, Pr, Rb, Sm, Te, Ti, Tl, Tm, U, V, Y, Zn and Zr). Once the analytical data were collected, supervised pattern recognition techniques such as linear discriminant analysis (LDA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) were applied to construct classification/discrimination rules. The results indicated that nonlinear methods, RF and SVM, perform best with up to 98% and 93% accuracy rate, respectively, and therefore are excellent tools for classification of grapes.Fil: Canizo, Brenda Vanina.
