In this paper, we present a new notional machine de- sign and implementation to help with understanding of pro- gramming and its dynamics for beginning learners. The no- tional machine offers an abstraction of the physical machine designed for comprehension and learning purposes. We in- troduce the notional machine and a graphical notation for its representation. Years of formal study and training are required to learn a programming language\u27s world of algorithms and data structures. Instructions are coded in advance before the computer demonstrates the desired behavior. Seeing all the programming steps and instruction code is complicated. There exists a tremendous gap between the representations the human brain uses when thinking about a problem and the representations used in programming a computer. Often people are much better at dealing with specific, concrete objects than working with abstract ideas. Concrete and specific programming examples and demonstrations can be very useful. When cleverly chosen and properly used, programming examples and demonstrations help people understand the abstract concepts.     The Effectiveness of Monitor-Based Augmented Reality Paradigms for Learning Space-Related Technical Tasks

    Currently today there are many types of media that can help individuals learn and excel in the on going effort to acquire knowledge for a specific trait or function in a workplace, laboratory, or learning facility. Technology has advanced in the fields of transportation, information gathering, and education. The need for better recall of information is in demand in a wide variety of areas. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that may help meet this demand. AR is a hybrid of reality and virtual reality (VR) that uses the three-dimensional location viewed through a video or optical see-through media to capture the object\u27s coordinates and add virtual images, objects, or text superimposed on the scene (Azuma, 1997). The purpose of this research is to investigate four different modes of presentation and the effect of those modes on learning and recall of information using monitor-based Augmented Reality. The four modes of presentation are Select, Observe, Interact and Print modes. Each mode possesses different attributes that may affect learning and recall. The Select mode can be described as a mode of presentation that allows movement of the work piece in front of the tracking camera. The Observe mode involves information presentation using a pre-recorded video scene presented with no interaction with the work piece. The Interact mode allows the user to view a pre-recorded video scene that allows the user to point and click on the component of the work piece with a computer mouse on the monitor. The Print mode consists of printed material of each work piece component. It was hypothesized that the Select mode would provide the user with the richest presentation of information due to information access capabilities helping to decrease work time, reduce the amount of error likelihood during usage, enhance the user\u27s motivation for learning tasks, and increase concurrent learning and performances due to recall and retention. It was predicted that the Select mode would result in trainees that would recall the greatest amount of information even after extended periods of time had elapsed. This hypothesis was not supported. No significant differences between the four groups were found

    Interactional Slingshots: Providing Support Structure to User Interactions in Hybrid Intelligence Systems

    The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems has enabled us to engage more deeply and powerfully with our digital and physical environments, from chatbots to autonomous vehicles to robotic assistive technology. Unfortunately, these state-of-the-art systems often fail in contexts that require human understanding, are never-before-seen, or complex. In such cases, though the AI-only approaches cannot solve the full task, their ability to solve a piece of the task can be combined with human effort to become more robust to handling complexity and uncertainty. A hybrid intelligence system—one that combines human and machine skill sets—can make intelligent systems more operable in real-world settings. In this dissertation, we propose the idea of using interactional slingshots as a means of providing support structure to user interactions in hybrid intelligence systems. Much like how gravitational slingshots provide boosts to spacecraft en route to their final destinations, so do interactional slingshots provide boosts to user interactions en route to solving tasks. Several challenges arise: What does this support structure look like? How much freedom does the user have in their interactions? How is user expertise paired with that of the machine’s? To do this as a tractable socio-technical problem, we explore this idea in the context of data annotation problems, especially in those domains where AI methods fail to solve the overall task. Getting annotated (labeled) data is crucial for successful AI methods, and becomes especially more difficult in domains where AI fails, since problems in such domains require human understanding to fully solve, but also present challenges related to annotator expertise, annotation freedom, and context curation from the data. To explore data annotation problems in this space, we develop techniques and workflows whose interactional slingshot support structure harnesses the user’s interaction with data. First, we explore providing support in the form of nudging non-expert users’ interactions as they annotate text data for the task of creating conversational memory. Second, we add support structure in the form of assisting non-expert users during the annotation process itself for the task of grounding natural language references to objects in 3D point clouds. Finally, we supply support in the form of guiding expert and non-expert users both before and during their annotations for the task of conversational disentanglement across multiple domains. We demonstrate that building hybrid intelligence systems with each of these interactional slingshot support mechanisms—nudging, assisting, and guiding a user’s interaction with data—improves annotation outcomes, such as annotation speed, accuracy, effort level, even when annotators’ expertise and skill levels vary.     Listening-Mode-Centered Sonification Design for Data Exploration

Bielefeld: Bielefeld University; 2013.From the Introduction to this thesis: Through the ever growing amount of data and the desire to make them accessible to the user through the sense of listening, sonification, the representation of data by using sound has been subject of active research in the computer sciences and the field of HCI for the last 20 years. During this time, the field of sonification has diversified into different application areas: today, sound in auditory display informs the user about states and actions on the desktop and in mobile devices; sonification has been applied in monitoring applications, where sound can range from being informative to alarming; sonification has been used to give sensory feedback in order to close the action and perception loop; last but not least, sonifications have also been developed for exploratory data analysis, where sound is used to represent data with unknown structures for hypothesis building. Coming from the computer sciences and HCI, the conceptualization of sonification has been mostly driven by application areas. On the other hand, the sonic arts who have always contributed to the community of auditory display have a genuine focus on sound. Despite this close interdisciplinary relation of communities of sound practitioners, a rich and sound- (or listening)-centered concept about sonification is still missing as a point of departure for a more application and task overarching approach towards design guidelines. Complementary to the useful organization along fields of applications, a conceptual framework that is proper to sound needs to abstract from applications and also to some degree from tasks, as both are not directly related to sound. I hence propose in this thesis to conceptualize sonifications along two poles where sound serves either a normative or a descriptive purpose. In the beginning of auditory display research, a continuum between a symbolic and an analogic pole has been proposed by Kramer (1994a, page 21). In this continuum, symbolic stands for sounds that coincide with existing schemas and are more denotative, analogic stands for sounds that are informative through their connotative aspects. (compare Worrall (2009, page 315)). The notions of symbolic and analogic illustrate the struggle to find apt descriptions of how the intention of the listener subjects audible phenomena to a process of meaning making and interpretation. Complementing the analogic-symbolic continuum with descriptive and normative purposes of displays is proposed in the light of the recently increased research interest in listening modes and intentions. Similar to the terms symbolic and analogic, listening modes have been discussed in auditory display since the beginning usually in dichotomic terms which were either identified with the words listening and hearing or understood as musical listening and everyday listening as proposed by Gaver (1993a). More than 25 years earlier, four direct listening modes have been introduced by Schaeffer (1966) together with a 5th synthetic mode of reduced listening which leads to the well-known sound object. Interestingly, Schaeffer’s listening modes remained largely unnoticed by the auditory display community. Particularly the notion of reduced listening goes beyond the connotative and denotative poles of the continuum proposed by Kramer and justifies the new terms descriptive and normative. Recently, a new taxonomy of listening modes has been proposed by Tuuri and Eerola (2012) that is motivated through an embodied cognition approach. The main contribution of their taxonomy is that it convincingly diversifies the connotative and denotative aspects of listening modes. In the recently published sonification handbook, multimodal and interactive aspects in combination with sonification have been discussed as promising options to expand and advance the field by Hunt and Hermann (2011), who point out that there is a big need for a better theoretical foundation in order to systematically integrate these aspects. The main contribution of this thesis is to address this need by providing alternative and complementary design guidelines with respect to existing approaches, all of which have been conceived before the recently increased research interest in listening modes. None of the existing contributions to design frameworks integrates multimodality, and listening modes with a focus on exploratory data analysis, where sonification is conceived to support the understanding of complex data potentially helping to identify new structures therein. In order to structure this field the following questions are addressed in this thesis: • How do natural listening modes and reduced listening relate to the proposed normative and descriptive display purposes? • What is the relationship of multimodality and interaction with listening modes and display purposes? • How can the potential of embodied cognition based listening modes be put to use for exploratory data sonification? • How can listening modes and display purposes be connected to questions of aesthetics in the display? • How do data complexity and Parameter-mapping sonification relate to exploratory data analysis and listening modes

    Advanced photonic and electronic systems - WILGA 2017

    WILGA annual symposium on advanced photonic and electronic systems has been organized by young scientist for young scientists since two decades. It traditionally gathers more than 350 young researchers and their tutors. Ph.D students and graduates present their recent achievements during well attended oral sessions. Wilga is a very good digest of Ph.D. works carried out at technical universities in electronics and photonics, as well as information sciences throughout Poland and some neighboring countries. Publishing patronage over Wilga keep Elektronika technical journal by SEP, IJET by PAN and Proceedings of SPIE. The latter world editorial series publishes annually more than 200 papers from Wilga. Wilga 2017 was the XL edition of this meeting. The following topical tracks were distinguished: photonics, electronics, information technologies and system research.     Histological Quantification in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

    Approximately 30 percent of epilepsy patients suffer from refractory temporal lobe epilepsy which is commonly treated with resection of the epileptogenic tissue. However, surgical treatment presents many challenges in locating the epileptogenic focus and thus not all patients become seizure-free following surgery. Advances in techniques can lead to improved localization of the epileptogenic zone and may be validated by correlating MRI with neuropathology of the excised cortical tissue. Focal cortical dysplasias are a neuropathological group of cortical malformations that are often found in cases of refractory epilepsy, however, they are subtle and difficult to quantify. The purpose of this research is to employ histology image analysis techniques to better characterize these abnormalities at the neuronal and laminar level, allowing for correlative MRI-histology studies and improved lesion detection in medically intractable TLE

    Timeline design for visualising cultural heritage data

    This thesis is concerned with the design of data visualisations of digitised museum, archive and library collections, in timelines. As cultural institutions digitise their collections—converting texts, objects, and artworks to electronic records—the volume of cultural data available grows. There is a growing perception, though, that we need to get more out of this data. Merely digitising does not automatically make collections accessible, discoverable and comprehensible, and standard interfaces do not necessarily support the types of interactions users wish to make. Data visualisations—this thesis focuses on interactive visual representations of data created with software—allow us to see an overview of, observe patterns in, and showcase the richness of, digitised collections. Visualisation can support analysis, exploration and presentation of collections for different audiences: research, collection administration, and the general public. The focus here is on visualising cultural data by time: a fundamental dimension for making sense of historical data, but also one with unique strangeness. Through cataloguing, cultural institutions define the meaning and value of items in their collections and the structure within which to make sense of them. By visualising threads in cataloguing data through time, can historical narratives be made visible? And is the data alone enough to tell the stories that people wish to tell? The intended audience for this research is cultural heritage institutions. This work sits at the crossroads between design, cultural heritage (particularly museology), and computing—drawing on the fields of digital humanities, information visualisation and human computer-interaction which also live in these overlapping spaces. This PhD adds clarity around the question of what cultural visualisation is (and can be) for, and highlights issues in the visualisation of qualitative or nominal data. The first chapter lays out the background, characterising cultural data and its visualisation. Chapter two walks through examples of existing cultural timeline visualisations, from the most handcrafted displays to automated approaches. At this point, the research agenda and methodology are set out. The next five chapters document a portfolio of visualisation projects, designing and building novel prototype timeline visualisations with data from the Wellcome Library and Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, New York City, and the Nordic Museum, Stockholm. In the process, a range of issues are identified for further discussion. The final chapters reflect on these projects, arguing that automated timeline visualisation can be a productive way to explore and present historical narratives in collection data, but a range of factors govern what is possible and useful. Trust in cultural data visualisation is also discussed. This research argues that visualising cultural data can add value to the data both for users and for data-holding institutions. However, that value is likely to be best achieved by customising a visualisation design to the dataset, audience and use case.     Enhancing detailed haptic relief for real-time interaction

    The present document exposes a different approach for haptic rendering, defined as the simulation of force interactions to reproduce the sensation of surface relief in dense models. Current research shows open issues in timely haptic interaction involving large meshes, with several problems affecting performance and fidelity, and without a dominant technique to treat these issues properly. Relying in pure geometric collisions when rendering highly dense mesh models (hundreds of thousands of triangles) sensibly degrades haptic rates due to the sheer number of collisions that must be tracked between the mesh's faces and a haptic probe. Several bottlenecks were identified in order to enhance haptic performance: software architecture and data structures, collision detection, and accurate rendering of surface relief. To account for overall software architecture and data structures, it was derived a complete component framework for transforming standalone VR applications into full-fledged multi-threaded Collaborative Virtual Reality Environments (CVREs), after characterizing existing implementations into a feature-rich superset. Enhancements include: a scalable arbitrated peer-to-peer topology for scene sharing; multi-threaded components for graphics rendering, user interaction and network communications; a collaborative user interface model for session handling; and interchangeable user roles with multi-camera perspectives, avatar awareness and shared annotations. We validate the framework by converting the existing ALICE VR Navigator into a complete CVRE, showing good performance in collaborative manipulation of complex models. To specifically address collision detection computation, we derive a conformal algebra treatment for collisions among points, segments, areas, and volumes, based on collision detection in conformal R{4,1} (5D) space, and implemented in GPU for faster parallel queries. Results show orders of magnitude time reductions in collisions computations, allowing interactive rates. Finally, the main core of the research is the haptic rendering of surface mesostructure in large meshes. Initially, a method for surface haptic rendering was proposed, using image-based Hybrid Rugosity Mesostructures (HRMs) of per-face heightfield displacements and normalmaps layered on top of a simpler mesh, adding greater surface detail than actually present. Haptic perception is achieved modulating the haptic probe's force response using the HRM coat. A usability testbed framework was built to measure experimental performance with a common set tests, meshes and HRMs. Trial results show the goodness of the proposed technique, rendering accurate 3D surface detail at high sampling rates. This local per-face method is extended into a fast global approach for haptic rendering, building a mesostructure-based atlas of depth/normal textures (HyRMA), computed out of surface differences of the same mesh object at two different resolutions: original and simplified. For each triangle in the simplified mesh, an irregular prism is considered defined by the triangle's vertices and their normals. This prism completely covers the original mesh relief over the triangle. Depth distances and surfaces normals within each prism are warped from object volume space to orthogonal tangent space, by means of a novel and fast method for computing barycentric coordinates at the prism, and storing normals and relief in a sorted atlas. Haptic rendering is effected by colliding the probe against the atlas, and effecting a modulated force response at the haptic probe. The method is validated numerically, statistically and perceptually in user testing controlled trials, achieving accurate haptic sensation of large meshes' fine features at interactive rendering rates, with some minute loss of mesostructure detail.En aquesta tesi es presenta un novedós enfocament per a la percepció hàptica del relleu de models virtuals complexes mitjançant la simulació de les forces d'interacció entre la superfície i un element de contacte. La proposta contribueix a l'estat de l'art de la recerca en aquesta àrea incrementant l'eficiència i la fidelitat de la interacció hàptica amb grans malles de triangles. La detecció de col·lisions amb malles denses (centenars de milers de triangles) limita la velocitat de resposta hàptica degut al gran nombre d'avaluacions d'intersecció cara-dispositiu hàptic que s'han de realitzar. Es van identificar diferents alternatives per a incrementar el rendiment hàptic: arquitectures de software i estructures de dades específiques, algorismes de detecció de col·lisions i reproducció hàptica de relleu superficial. En aquesta tesi es presenten contribucions en alguns d'aquests aspectes. S'ha proposat una estructura completa de components per a transformar aplicacions de Realitat Virtual en Ambients Col·laboratius de Realitat Virtual (CRVEs) multithread en xarxa. L'arquitectura proposada inclou: una topologia escalable punt a punt per a compartir escenes; components multithread per a visualització gràfica, interacció amb usuaris i comunicació en xarxa; un model d'interfície d'usuari col·laboratiu per a la gestió de sessions; i rols intercanviables de l'usuari amb perspectives de múltiples càmeres, presència d'avatars i anotacions compartides. L'estructura s'ha validat convertint el navegador ALICE en un CVRE completament funcional, mostrant un bon rendiment en la manipulació col·laborativa de models complexes. Per a incrementar l'eficiència del càlcul de col·lisions, s'ha proposat un algorisme que treballa en un espai conforme R{4,1} (5D) que permet detectar col·lisions entre punts, segments, triangles i volums. Aquest algorisme s'ha implementat en GPU per obtenir una execució paral·lela més ràpida. Els resultats mostren reduccions en el temps de càlcul de col·lisions permetent interactivitat. Per a la percepció hàptica de malles complexes que modelen objectes rugosos, s'han proposat diferents algorismes i estructures de dades. Les denominades Mesoestructures Híbrides de Rugositat (HRM) permeten substituir els detalls geomètrics d'una cara (rugositats) per dues textures: de normals i d'alçades. La percepció hàptica s'aconsegueix modulant la força de resposta entre el dispositiu hàptic i la HRM. Els tests per avaluar experimentalment l'eficiència del càlcul de col·lisions i la percepció hàptica utilitzant HRM respecte a modelar les rugositats amb geometria, van mostrar que la tècnica proposada va ser encertada, permetent percebre detalls 3D correctes a altes tases de mostreig. El mètode es va estendre per a representar rugositats d'objectes. Es proposa substituir l'objecte per un model simplificat i un atles de mesoestructures en el que s'usen textures de normals i de relleus (HyRMA). Aquest atles s'obté a partir de la diferència en el detall de la superfície entre dos malles del mateix objecte: l'original i la simplificada. A partir d'un triangle de la malla simplificada es construeix un prisma, definit pels vèrtexs del triangle i les seves normals, que engloba el relleu de la malla original sobre el triangle. Les alçades i normals dins del prisma es transformen des de l'espai de volum a l'espai ortogonal tangent, amb mètode novedós i eficient que calcula les coordenades baricèntriques relatives al prisma, per a guardar el mapa de textures transformat en un atles ordenat. La percepció hàptica s'assoleix detectant les col·lisions entre el dispositiu hàptic i l'atles, i modulant la força de resposta d'acord al resultat de la col·lisió. Este método anterior es extendido a un procedimiento global para representar rugosidades de objetos. Para hacerlo se propone sustituir el objeto por un modelo simplificado y un atlas de mesostructuras usando texturas de normales y relieves (HyRMA). Este atlas se obtiene de la diferencia en detalle de superficie entre dos mallas del mismo objeto: la original y la simplificada. A partir de un triángulo de la malla simplificada se construye un prisma definido por los vértices del triángulo a lo largo de sus normales, que engloba completamente el relieve de la malla original sobre este triángulo. Las alturas y normales dentro de cada prisma se transforman del espacio de volumen al espacio ortoganal tangente, usando un método novedoso y eficiente que calcula las coordenadas baricéntricas relativas a cada prisma para guardar el mapa de texturas transformado en un atlas ordenado. La percepción háptica se consigue detectando directamente las colisiones entre el dispositivo háptico y el atlas, y modulando la fuerza de respuesta de acuerdo al resultado de la colisión. El procedmiento se ha validado numérica, estadística y perceptualmente en ensayos con usuarios, consiguiendo a tasas interactivas la correcta sensación táctil de los objetos simulados mediante la mesoestructura de las mallas, con alguna pérdida muy puntual de detall
