Digital implementation of the cellular sensor-computers
Two different kinds of cellular sensor-processor architectures are used nowadays in various
applications. The first is the traditional sensor-processor architecture, where the sensor and the
processor arrays are mapped into each other. The second is the foveal architecture, in which a
small active fovea is navigating in a large sensor array. This second architecture is introduced
and compared here. Both of these architectures can be implemented with analog and digital
processor arrays. The efficiency of the different implementation types, depending on the used
CMOS technology, is analyzed. It turned out, that the finer the technology is, the better to use
digital implementation rather than analog

Memory-Based High-Level Synthesis Optimizations Security Exploration on the Power Side-Channel
High-level synthesis (HLS) allows hardware designers to think algorithmically and not worry about low-level, cycle-by-cycle details. This provides the ability to quickly explore the architectural design space and tradeoffs between resource utilization and performance. Unfortunately, security evaluation is not a standard part of the HLS design flow. In this article, we aim to understand the effects of memory-based HLS optimizations on power side-channel leakage. We use Xilinx Vivado HLS to develop different cryptographic cores, implement them on a Spartan-6 FPGA, and collect power traces. We evaluate the designs with respect to resource utilization, performance, and information leakage through power consumption. We have two important observations and contributions. First, the choice of resource optimization directive results in different levels of side-channel vulnerabilities. Second, the partitioning optimization directive can greatly compromise the hardware cryptographic system through power side-channel leakage due to the deployment of memory control logic. We describe an evaluation procedure for power side-channel leakage and use it to make best-effort recommendations about how to design more secure architectures in the cryptographic domain
A scalable multi-core architecture with heterogeneous memory structures for Dynamic Neuromorphic Asynchronous Processors (DYNAPs)
Neuromorphic computing systems comprise networks of neurons that use
asynchronous events for both computation and communication. This type of
representation offers several advantages in terms of bandwidth and power
consumption in neuromorphic electronic systems. However, managing the traffic
of asynchronous events in large scale systems is a daunting task, both in terms
of circuit complexity and memory requirements. Here we present a novel routing
methodology that employs both hierarchical and mesh routing strategies and
combines heterogeneous memory structures for minimizing both memory
requirements and latency, while maximizing programming flexibility to support a
wide range of event-based neural network architectures, through parameter
configuration. We validated the proposed scheme in a prototype multi-core
neuromorphic processor chip that employs hybrid analog/digital circuits for
emulating synapse and neuron dynamics together with asynchronous digital
circuits for managing the address-event traffic. We present a theoretical
analysis of the proposed connectivity scheme, describe the methods and circuits
used to implement such scheme, and characterize the prototype chip. Finally, we
demonstrate the use of the neuromorphic processor with a convolutional neural
network for the real-time classification of visual symbols being flashed to a
dynamic vision sensor (DVS) at high speed.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figure
Stepwise transformation of algorithms into array processor architectures by the decomp
A formal approach for the transformation of computation intensive digital signal processing algorithms into suitable array processor architectures is presented. It covers the complete design flow from algorithmic specifications in a high-level programming language to architecture descriptions in a hardware description language. The transformation itself is divided into manageable design steps and implemented in the CAD-tool DECOMP which allows the exploration of different architectures in a short time. With the presented approach data independent algorithms can be mapped onto array processor architectures. To allow this, a known mapping methodology for array processor design is extended to handle inhomogeneous dependence graphs with nonregular data dependences. The implementation of the formal approach in the DECOMP is an important step towards design automation for massively parallel systems
Compiling dataflow graphs into hardware

Darrell Whitley.2005 Fall.Includes bibliographical references (pages 121-126).Conventional computers are programmed by supplying a sequence of instructions that perform the desired task. A reconfigurable processor is "programmed" by specifying the interconnections between hardware components, thereby creating a "hardwired" system to do the particular task. For some applications such as image processing, reconfigurable processors can produce dramatic execution speedups. However, programming a reconfigurable processor is essentially a hardware design discipline, making programming difficult for application programmers who are only familiar with software design techniques. To bridge this gap, a programming language, called SA-C (Single Assignment C, pronounced "sassy"), has been designed for programming reconfigurable processors. The process involves two main steps - first, the SA-C compiler analyzes the input source code and produces a hardware-independent intermediate representation of the program, called a dataflow graph (DFG). Secondly, this DFG is combined with hardware-specific information to create the final configuration. This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a system that performs the DFG to hardware translation. The DFG is broken up into three sections: the data generators, the inner loop body, and the data collectors. The second of these, the inner loop body, is used to create a computational structure that is unique for each program. The other two sections are implemented by using prebuilt modules, parameterized for the particular problem. Finally, a "glue module" is created to connect the various pieces into a complete interconnection specification. The dissertation also explores optimizations that can be applied while processing the DFG, to improve performance. A technique for pipelining the inner loop body is described that uses an estimation tool for the propagation delay of the nodes within the dataflow graph. A scheme is also described that identifies subgraphs with the dataflow graph that can be replaced with lookup tables. The lookup tables provide a faster implementation than random logic in some instances
The Potential for a GPU-Like Overlay Architecture for FPGAs
We propose a soft processor programming
model and architecture inspired by graphics processing units
(GPUs) that are well-matched to the strengths of FPGAs,
namely, highly parallel and pipelinable computation. In
particular, our soft processor architecture exploits multithreading,
vector operations, and predication to supply a
floating-point pipeline of 64 stages via hardware support
for up to 256 concurrent thread contexts. The key new
contributions of our architecture are mechanisms for managing
threads and register files that maximize data-level and
instruction-level parallelism while overcoming the challenges
of port limitations of FPGA block memories as well as
memory and pipeline latency. Through simulation of a
system that (i) is programmable via NVIDIA's high-level
Cg language, (ii) supports AMD's CTM r5xx GPU ISA, and
(iii) is realizable on an XtremeData XD1000 FPGA-based
accelerator system, we demonstrate the potential for such
a system to achieve 100% utilization of a deeply pipelined
floating-point datapath
Exploring Spin-transfer-torque devices and memristors for logic and memory applications
As scaling CMOS devices is approaching its physical limits, researchers have begun exploring newer devices and architectures to replace CMOS.
Due to their non-volatility and high density, Spin Transfer Torque (STT) devices are among the most prominent candidates for logic and memory applications. In this research, we first considered a new logic style called All Spin Logic (ASL). Despite its advantages, ASL consumes a large amount of static power; thus, several optimizations can be performed to address this issue. We developed a systematic methodology to perform the optimizations to ensure stable operation of ASL.
Second, we investigated reliable design of STT-MRAM bit-cells and addressed the conflicting read and write requirements, which results in overdesign of the bit-cells. Further, a Device/Circuit/Architecture co-design framework was developed to optimize the STT-MRAM devices by exploring the design space through jointly considering yield enhancement techniques at different levels of abstraction.
Recent advancements in the development of memristive devices have opened new opportunities for hardware implementation of non-Boolean computing. To this end, the suitability of memristive devices for swarm intelligence algorithms has enabled researchers to solve a maze in hardware. In this research, we utilized swarm intelligence of memristive networks to perform image edge detection. First, we proposed a hardware-friendly algorithm for image edge detection based on ant colony.
