    Stylistic document retrieval for Turkish

    In information retrieval (IR) systems, there are a query and a collection of documents compared with this query and ranked according to a particular similarity measure. Since texts with the same content can be written by different authors, the writing styles of the documents change as well accordingly. This observation brings the idea of investigating text by means of style. In this paper, we analyze text documents in terms of stylistic features of the written text and measure effectiveness of these features in an IR system. Our main focus is on Turkish text documents. Although there are many studies about broadening IR systems with style based enhancement, there is no similar application for Turkish which performs retrieval depending purely on style. © 2009 IEEE

    Automatic coding of short text responses via clustering in educational assessment

    Automatic coding of short text responses opens new doors in assessment. We implemented and integrated baseline methods of natural language processing and statistical modelling by means of software components that are available under open licenses. The accuracy of automatic text coding is demonstrated by using data collected in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 in Germany. Free text responses of 10 items with Formula responses in total were analyzed. We further examined the effect of different methods, parameter values, and sample sizes on performance of the implemented system. The system reached fair to good up to excellent agreement with human codings Formula Especially items that are solved by naming specific semantic concepts appeared properly coded. The system performed equally well with Formula and somewhat poorer but still acceptable down to Formula Based on our findings, we discuss potential innovations for assessment that are enabled by automatic coding of short text responses.     Music emotion recognition: a multimodal machine learning approach

    Music emotion recognition (MER) is an emerging domain of the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) scientific community, and besides, music searches through emotions are one of the major selection preferred by web users. As the world goes to digital, the musical contents in online databases, such as Last.fm have expanded exponentially, which require substantial manual efforts for managing them and also keeping them updated. Therefore, the demand for innovative and adaptable search mechanisms, which can be personalized according to users’ emotional state, has gained increasing consideration in recent years. This thesis concentrates on addressing music emotion recognition problem by presenting several classification models, which were fed by textual features, as well as audio attributes extracted from the music. In this study, we build both supervised and semisupervised classification designs under four research experiments, that addresses the emotional role of audio features, such as tempo, acousticness, and energy, and also the impact of textual features extracted by two different approaches, which are TF-IDF and Word2Vec. Furthermore, we proposed a multi-modal approach by using a combined feature-set consisting of the features from the audio content, as well as from context-aware data. For this purpose, we generated a ground truth dataset containing over 1500 labeled song lyrics and also unlabeled big data, which stands for more than 2.5 million Turkish documents, for achieving to generate an accurate automatic emotion classification system. The analytical models were conducted by adopting several algorithms on the crossvalidated data by using Python. As a conclusion of the experiments, the best-attained performance was 44.2% when employing only audio features, whereas, with the usage of textual features, better performances were observed with 46.3% and 51.3% accuracy scores considering supervised and semi-supervised learning paradigms, respectively.     Computational Sociolinguistics: A Survey

    Language is a social phenomenon and variation is inherent to its social nature. Recently, there has been a surge of interest within the computational linguistics (CL) community in the social dimension of language. In this article we present a survey of the emerging field of "Computational Sociolinguistics" that reflects this increased interest. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of CL research on sociolinguistic themes, featuring topics such as the relation between language and social identity, language use in social interaction and multilingual communication. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential for synergy between the research communities involved, by showing how the large-scale data-driven methods that are widely used in CL can complement existing sociolinguistic studies, and how sociolinguistics can inform and challenge the methods and assumptions employed in CL studies. We hope to convey the possible benefits of a closer collaboration between the two communities and conclude with a discussion of open challenges.Comment: To appear in Computational Linguistics.     Authorship attribution: Performance of various features and classification methods

    Authorship attribution is the process of determining the writer of a document. In literature, there are lots of classification techniques conducted in this process. In this paper we explore information retrieval methods such as tf-idf structure with support vector machines, parametric and nonparametric methods with supervised and unsupervised (clustering) classification techniques in authorship attribution. We performed various experiments with articles gathered from Turkish newspaper Milliyet. We performed experiments on different features extracted from these texts with different classifiers, and combined these results to improve our success rates. We identified which classifiers give satisfactory results on which feature sets. According to experiments, the success rates dramatically changes with different combinations, however the best among them are support vector classifier with bag of words, and Gaussian with function words. ©2007 IEEE

    Automatic categorization of Ottoman poems

We investigate two fundamentally different machine learning text categorization methods, Support Vector Machines (SVM) and NaĂŻve Bayes (NB), and several style markers in the categorization of Ottoman poems according to their poets and time periods. We use the collected works (divans) of ten different Ottoman poets: two poets from each of the five different hundred-year periods ranging from the 15th to 19 th century. Our experimental evaluation and statistical assessments show that it is possible to obtain highly accurate and reliable classifications and to distinguish the methods and style markers in terms of their effectiveness
