    Fringe Projection Profilometry in Production Metrology: A Multi-Scale Comparison in Sheet-Bulk Metal Forming

    Fringe projection profilometry in combination with other optical measuring technologies has established itself over the last decades as an essential complement to conventional, tactile measuring devices. The non-contact, holistic reconstruction of complex geometries within fractions of a second in conjunction with the lightweight and transportable sensor design open up many fields of application in production metrology. Furthermore, triangulation-based measuring principles feature good scalability, which has led to 3D scanners for various scale ranges. Innovative and modern production processes, such as sheet-bulk metal forming, thus, utilize fringe projection profilometry in many respects to monitor the process, quantify possible wear and improve production technology. Therefore, it is essential to identify the appropriate 3D scanner for each application and to properly evaluate the acquired data. Through precise knowledge of the measurement volume and the relative uncertainty with respect to the specimen and scanner position, adapted measurement strategies and integrated production concepts can be realized. Although there are extensive industrial standards and guidelines for the quantification of sensor performance, evaluation and tolerancing is mainly global and can, therefore, neither provide assistance in the correct, application-specific positioning and alignment of the sensor nor reflect the local characteristics within the measuring volume.     Optically trapped atom interferometry using the clock transition of large Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensates

    We present a Ramsey-type atom interferometer operating with an optically trapped sample of 10^6 Bose-condensed Rb-87 atoms. The optical trap allows us to couple the |F =1, mF =0>\rightarrow |F =2, mF =0> clock states using a single photon 6.8GHz microwave transition, while state selective readout is achieved with absorption imaging. Interference fringes with contrast approaching 100% are observed for short evolution times. We analyse the process of absorption imaging and show that it is possible to observe atom number variance directly, with a signal-to-noise ratio ten times better than the atomic projection noise limit on 10^6 condensate atoms. We discuss the technical and fundamental noise sources that limit our current system, and outline the improvements that can be made. Our results indicate that, with further experimental refinements, it will be possible to produce and measure the output of a sub-shot-noise limited, large atom number BEC-based interferometer. In an addendum to the original paper, we attribute our inability to observe quantum projection noise to the stability of our microwave oscillator and background magnetic field. Numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations for our system show that dephasing due to spatial dynamics driven by interparticle interactions account for much of the observed decay in fringe visibility at long interrogation times. The simulations show good agreement with the experimental data when additional technical decoherence is accounted for, and suggest that the clock states are indeed immiscible. With smaller samples of 5 \times 10^4 atoms, we observe a coherence time of {\tau} = (1.0+0.5-0.3) s.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures Addendum: 11 pages, 6 figure

    Seconds-scale coherence in a tweezer-array optical clock

    Optical clocks based on atoms and ions achieve exceptional precision and accuracy, with applications to relativistic geodesy, tests of relativity, and searches for dark matter. Achieving such performance requires balancing competing desirable features, including a high particle number, isolation of atoms from collisions, insensitivity to motional effects, and high duty-cycle operation. Here we demonstrate a new platform based on arrays of ultracold strontium atoms confined within optical tweezers that realizes a novel combination of these features by providing a scalable platform for isolated atoms that can be interrogated multiple times. With this tweezer-array clock, we achieve greater than 3 second coherence times and record duty cycles up to 96%, as well as stability commensurate with leading platforms. By using optical tweezer arrays --- a proven platform for the controlled creation of entanglement through microscopic control --- this work further promises a new path toward combining entanglement enhanced sensitivities with the most precise optical clock transitions

    Atom lasers: production, properties and prospects for precision inertial measurement

    We review experimental progress on atom lasers out-coupled from Bose-Einstein condensates, and consider the properties of such beams in the context of precision inertial sensing. The atom laser is the matter-wave analog of the optical laser. Both devices rely on Bose-enhanced scattering to produce a macroscopically populated trapped mode that is output-coupled to produce an intense beam. In both cases, the beams often display highly desirable properties such as low divergence, high spectral flux and a simple spatial mode that make them useful in practical applications, as well as the potential to perform measurements at or below the quantum projection noise limit. Both devices display similar second-order correlations that differ from thermal sources. Because of these properties, atom lasers are a promising source for application to precision inertial measurements.Comment: This is a review paper.     Atomic gravimeter robust to environmental effects

    Atomic accelerometers and gravimeters are usually based on freely-falling atoms in atomic fountains, which not only limits their size, but also their robustness to environmental factors such as tilts, magnetic fields or vibrations. Such limitations have precluded their broad adoption in the field, for geophysics, geology, and inertial navigation. More recently, atom interferometers based on holding atoms in an optical lattice have been developed. Such gravimeters also suppress the influence of vibrations in the frequency range of ~1 Hz and above by several orders of magnitude relative to conventional atomic gravimeters. Here, we show that such interferometers are robust to tilts of more than 8 mrad with respect to the vertical and can suppress the effect of even strong environmental magnetic fields and field gradients by using atoms in the F=3,4 hyperfine ground states as co-magnetometers, potentially eliminating the need for shielding. We demonstrate gravimeter sensitivity of 0.7 mGal/Hz0.7~\rm{mGal}/\sqrt{\rm Hz} (1 mGal=10 μm/s21~{\rm mGal}=10~\mu\rm{m/s}^2) in a compact geometry where atoms only travel over mm of space.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

La fotogrametría es una técnica de medición óptica 3D que engloba múltiples configuraciones y aproximaciones. En este estudio se han desarrollado procedimientos de medición, modelos y estrategias de procesamiento de imagen que van más allá que la fotogrametría convencional y buscan el emplear soluciones de otros campos de la visión artificial en aplicaciones industriales. Mientras que la fotogrametría industrial requiere emplear dianas artificiales para definir los puntos o elementos de interés, esta tesis contempla la reducción e incluso la eliminación de las dianas tanto pasivas como activas como alternativas prácticas. La mayoría de los sistemas de medida utilizan las dianas tanto para definir los puntos de control, relacionar las distintas perspectivas, obtener precisión, así como para automatizar las medidas. Aunque en muchas situaciones el empleo de dianas no sea restrictivo existen aplicaciones industriales donde su empleo condiciona y restringe considerablemente los procedimientos de medida empleados en la inspección. Un claro ejemplo es la verificación y control de calidad de piezas seriadas, o la medición y seguimiento de elementos prismáticos relacionados con un sistema de referencia determinado. Es en este punto donde la fotogrametría sin dianas puede combinarse o complementarse con soluciones tradicionales para tratar de mejorar las prestaciones actuales

    The characterisation and simulation of 3D vision sensors for measurement optimisation

    The use of 3D Vision is becoming increasingly common in a range of industrial applications including part identification, reverse engineering, quality control and inspection. To facilitate this increased usage, especially in autonomous applications such as free-form assembly and robotic metrology, the capability to deploy a sensor to the optimum pose for a measurement task is essential to reduce cycle times and increase measurement quality. Doing so requires knowledge of the 3D sensor capabilities on a material specific basis, as the optical properties of a surface, object shape, pose and even the measurement itself have severe implications for the data quality. This need is not reflected in the current state of sensor haracterisation standards which commonly utilise optically compliant artefacts and therefore can not inform the user of a 3D sensor the realistic expected performance on non-ideal objects.This thesis presents a method of scoring candidate viewpoints for their ability to perform geometric measurements on an object of arbitrary surface finish. This is achieved by first defining a technology independent, empirical sensor characterisation method which implements a novel variant of the commonly used point density point cloud quality metric, which is normalised to isolate the effect of surface finish on sensor performance, as well as the more conventional assessment of point standard deviation. The characterisation method generates a set of performance maps for a sensor per material which are a function of distance and surface orientation. A sensor simulation incorporates these performance maps to estimate the statistical properties of a point cloud on objects with arbitrary shape and surface finish, providing the sensor has been characterised on the material in question.A framework for scoring measurement specific candidate viewpoints is presented in the context of the geometric inspection of four artefacts with different surface finish but identical geometry. Views are scored on their ability to perform each measurement based on a novel view score metric, which incorporates the expected point density, noise and occlusion of measurement dependent model features. The simulation is able to score the views reliably on all four surface finishes tested, which range from ideal matt white to highly polished aluminium. In 93% of measurements, a set of optimal or nearly optimal views is correctly selected.</div
