    Intelligent flight control systems

    The capabilities of flight control systems can be enhanced by designing them to emulate functions of natural intelligence. Intelligent control functions fall in three categories. Declarative actions involve decision-making, providing models for system monitoring, goal planning, and system/scenario identification. Procedural actions concern skilled behavior and have parallels in guidance, navigation, and adaptation. Reflexive actions are spontaneous, inner-loop responses for control and estimation. Intelligent flight control systems learn knowledge of the aircraft and its mission and adapt to changes in the flight environment. Cognitive models form an efficient basis for integrating 'outer-loop/inner-loop' control functions and for developing robust parallel-processing algorithms

    Damage identification in structural health monitoring: a brief review from its implementation to the Use of data-driven applications

    The damage identification process provides relevant information about the current state of a structure under inspection, and it can be approached from two different points of view. The first approach uses data-driven algorithms, which are usually associated with the collection of data using sensors. Data are subsequently processed and analyzed. The second approach uses models to analyze information about the structure. In the latter case, the overall performance of the approach is associated with the accuracy of the model and the information that is used to define it. Although both approaches are widely used, data-driven algorithms are preferred in most cases because they afford the ability to analyze data acquired from sensors and to provide a real-time solution for decision making; however, these approaches involve high-performance processors due to the high computational cost. As a contribution to the researchers working with data-driven algorithms and applications, this work presents a brief review of data-driven algorithms for damage identification in structural health-monitoring applications. This review covers damage detection, localization, classification, extension, and prognosis, as well as the development of smart structures. The literature is systematically reviewed according to the natural steps of a structural health-monitoring system. This review also includes information on the types of sensors used as well as on the development of data-driven algorithms for damage identification.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Design and validation of structural health monitoring system based on bio-inspired algorithms

    The need of ensure the proper performance of the structures in service has made of structural health monitoring (SHM) a priority research area. Researchers all around the world have focused efforts on the development of new ways to continuous monitoring the structures and analyze the data collected from the inspection process in order to provide information about the current state and avoid possible catastrophes. To perform an effective analysis of the data, the development of methodologies is crucial in order to assess the structures with a low computational cost and with a high reliability. These desirable features can be found in biological systems, and these can be emulated by means of computational systems. The use of bio-inspired algorithms is a recent approach that has demonstrated its effectiveness in data analysis in different areas. Since these algorithms are based in the emulation of biological systems that have demonstrated its effectiveness for several generations, it is possible to mimic the evolution process and its adaptability characteristics by using computational algorithms. Specially in pattern recognition, several algorithms have shown good performance. Some widely used examples are the neural networks, the fuzzy systems and the genetic algorithms. This thesis is concerned about the development of bio-inspired methodologies for structural damage detection and classification. This document is organized in five chapters. First, an overview of the problem statement, the objectives, general results, a brief theoretical background and the description of the different experimental setups are included in Chapter 1 (Introduction). Chapters 2 to 4 include the journal papers published by the author of this thesis. The discussion of the results, some conclusions and the future work can be found on Chapter 5. Finally, Appendix A includes other contributions such as a book chapter and some conference papers.La necesidad de asegurar el correcto funcionamiento de las estructuras en servicio ha hecho de la monitorización de la integridad estructural un área de gran interés. Investigadores en todas las partes del mundo centran sus esfuerzos en el desarrollo de nuevas formas de monitorización contínua de estructuras que permitan analizar e interpretar los datos recogidos durante el proceso de inspección con el objetivo de proveer información sobre el estado actual de la estructura y evitar posibles catástrofes. Para desarrollar un análisis efectivo de los datos, es necesario el desarrollo de metodologías para inspeccionar la estructura con un bajo coste computacional y alta fiabilidad. Estas características deseadas pueden ser encontradas en los sistemas biológicos y pueden ser emuladas mediante herramientas computacionales. El uso de algoritmos bio-inspirados es una reciente técnica que ha demostrado su efectividad en el análisis de datos en diferentes áreas. Dado que estos algoritmos se basan en la emulación de sistemas biológicos que han demostrado su efectividad a lo largo de muchas generaciones, es posible imitar el proceso de evolución y sus características de adaptabilidad al medio usando algoritmos computacionales. Esto es así, especialmente, en reconocimiento de patrones, donde muchos de estos algoritmos brindan excelentes resultados. Algunos ejemplos ampliamente usados son las redes neuronales, los sistemas fuzzy y los algoritmos genéticos. Esta tesis involucra el desarrollo de unas metodologías bio-inspiradas para la detección y clasificación de daños estructurales. El documento está organizado en cinco capítulos. En primer lugar, se incluye una descripción general del problema, los objetivos del trabajo, los resultados obtenidos, un breve marco conceptual y la descripción de los diferentes escenarios experimentales en el Capítulo 1 (Introducción). Los Capítulos 2 a 4 incluyen los artículos publicados en diferentes revistas indexadas. La revisión de los resultados, conclusiones y el trabajo futuro se encuentra en el Capítulo 5.     Design and validation of a structural health monitoring system for aeronautical structures.

    Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an area where the main objective is the verification of the state or the health of the structures in order to ensure proper performance and maintenance cost savings using a sensor network attached to the structure, continuous monitoring and algorithms. Different benefits are derived from the implementation of SHM, some of them are: knowledge about the behavior of the structure under different loads and different environmental changes, knowledge of the current state in order to verify the integrity of the structure and determine whether a structure can work properly or whether it needs to be maintained or replaced and, therefore, to reduce maintenance costs. The paradigm of damage identification (comparison between the data collected from the structure without damages and the current structure in orderto determine if there are any changes) can be tackled as a pattern recognition problem. Some statistical techniques as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are very useful for this purpose because they allow obtaining the most relevant information from a large amount of variables. This thesis uses an active piezoelectric system to develop statistical data driven approaches for the detection, localization and classification of damages in structures. This active piezoelectric system is permanently attached to the surface of the structure under test in order to apply vibrational excitations and sensing the dynamical responses propagated through the structure at different points. As pattern recognition technique, PCA is used to perform the main task of the proposed methodology: to build a base-line model of the structure without damage and subsequentlyto compare the data from the current structure (under test) with this model. Moreover, different damage indices are calculated to detect abnormalities in the structure under test. Besides, the localization of the damage can be determined by means of the contribution of each sensor to each index. This contribution is calculated by several different methods and their comparison is performed. To classify different damages, the damage detection methodology is extended using a Self-Organizing Map (SOM), which is properly trained and validated to build a pattern baseline model using projections of the data onto the PCAmodel and damage detection indices. This baseline is further used as a reference for blind diagnosis tests of structures. Additionally, PCA is replaced by ICAas pattern recognition technique. A comparison between the two methodologies is performed highlighting advantages and disadvantages. In order to study the performance of the damage classification methodology under different scenarios, the methodology is tested using data from a structure under several different temperatures. The methodologies developed in this work are tested and validated using different structures, in particular an aircraft turbine blade, an aircraft wing skeleton, an aircraft fuselage,some aluminium plates and some composite matarials plates.La monitorización de daños en estructuras (SHM por sus siglas en inglés) es un área que tiene como principal objetivo la verificación del estado o la salud de la estructura con el fin de asegurar el correcto funcionamiento de esta y ahorrar costos de mantenimiento. Para esto se hace uso de sensores que son adheridos a la estructura, monitorización continua y algoritmos. Diferentes beneficios se obtienen de la aplicación de SHM, algunos de ellos son: el conocimiento sobre el desempeño de la estructura cuando esta es sometida a diversas cargas y cambios ambientales, el conocimiento del estado actual de la estructura con el fin de determinar la integridad de la estructura y definir si esta puede trabajar adecuadamente o si por el contrario debe ser reparada o reemplazada con el correspondiente beneficio del ahorro de gastos de mantenimiento. El paradigma de la identificación de daños (comparación entre los datos obtenidos de la estructura sin daños y la estructura en un estado posterior para determinar cambios) puede ser abordado como un problema de reconocimiento de patrones. Algunas técnicas estadísticas tales como Análisis de Componentes Principales (PCA por sus siglas en inglés) o Análisis de Componentes Independientes (ICA por sus siglas en ingles) son muy útiles para este propósito puesto que permiten obtener la información más relevante de una gran cantidad de variables. Esta tesis hace uso de un sistema piezoeléctrico activo para el desarrollo de algoritmos estadísticos de manejo de datos para la detección, localización y clasificación de daños en estructuras. Este sistema piezoeléctrico activo está permanentemente adherido a la superficie de la estructura bajo prueba con el objeto de aplicar señales vibracionales de excitación y recoger las respuestas dinámicas propagadas a través de la estructura en diferentes puntos. Como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones se usa Análisis de Componentes Principales para realizar la tarea principal de la metodología propuesta: construir un modelo PCA base de la estructura sin daño y posteriormente compararlo con los datos de la estructura bajo prueba. Adicionalmente, algunos índices de daños son calculados para detectar anormalidades en la estructura bajo prueba. Para la localización de daños se usan las contribuciones de cada sensor a cada índice, las cuales son calculadas mediante varios métodos de contribución y comparadas para mostrar sus ventajas y desventajas. Para la clasificación de daños, se amplia la metodología de detección añadiendo el uso de Mapas auto-organizados, los cuales son adecuadamente entrenados y validados para construir un modelo patrón base usando proyecciones de los datos sobre el modelo PCA base e índices de detección de daños. Este patrón es usado como referencia para realizar un diagnóstico ciego de la estructura. Adicionalmente, dentro de la metodología propuesta, se utiliza ICA en lugar de PCA como técnica de reconocimiento de patrones. Se incluye también una comparación entre la aplicación de las dos técnicas para mostrar las ventajas y desventajas. Para estudiar el desempeño de la metodología de clasificación de daños bajo diferentes escenarios, esta se prueba usando datos obtenidos de una estructura sometida a diferentes temperaturas. Las metodologías desarrolladas en este trabajo fueron probadas y validadas usando diferentes estructuras, en particular un álabe de turbina, un esqueleto de ala y un fuselaje de avión, así como algunas placas de aluminio y de material compuest

    Performance-based health monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics for condition-based maintenance of gas turbines: A review

    With the privatization and intense competition that characterize the volatile energy sector, the gas turbine industry currently faces new challenges of increasing operational flexibility, reducing operating costs, improving reliability and availability while mitigating the environmental impact. In this complex, changing sector, the gas turbine community could address a set of these challenges by further development of high fidelity, more accurate and computationally efficient engine health assessment, diagnostic and prognostic systems. Recent studies have shown that engine gas-path performance monitoring still remains the cornerstone for making informed decisions in operation and maintenance of gas turbines. This paper offers a systematic review of recently developed engine performance monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic techniques. The inception of performance monitoring and its evolution over time, techniques used to establish a high-quality dataset using engine model performance adaptation, and effects of computationally intelligent techniques on promoting the implementation of engine fault diagnosis are reviewed. Moreover, recent developments in prognostics techniques designed to enhance the maintenance decision-making scheme and main causes of gas turbine performance deterioration are discussed to facilitate the fault identification module. The article aims to organize, evaluate and identify patterns and trends in the literature as well as recognize research gaps and recommend new research areas in the field of gas turbine performance-based monitoring. The presented insightful concepts provide experts, students or novice researchers and decision-makers working in the area of gas turbine engines with the state of the art for performance-based condition monitoring

    This paper presents a new hybrid methodology to diagnose failures in aeronautical and civil structures using as a tool the Perceptron multi-layer artificial neural networks and ARTMAP-Fuzzy and the wavelet transform. The main application of this hybrid methodology. The main application of this methodology is the auxiliary structures inspection process in order to identify and characterize the flaws, as well as perform the decisions aiming at avoiding accidents or disasters.     Investigation of PEMFC fault diagnosis with consideration of sensor reliability

    Despite the wide range of applications for the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), its reliability and durability are still major barriers for further commercialisation. As a possible solution, PEMFC fault diagnosis has received much more atten-tion in the last few decades. Due to the difficulty of developing an accurate PEMFC model incorporating various failure mode ef-fects, data-driven approaches are widely used for diagnosis purposes. These methods depend largely on the quality of sensor measurements from the PEMFC. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate sensor reliability when performing PEMFC fault diagnosis. In this study, sensor reliability is investigated by proposing an identification technique to detect abnormal sensors during PEMFC operation. The identified abnormal sensors will be removed from the analysis in order to guarantee reliable diagnostic performance. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed technique is investigated using test data from a PEMFC system, where fuel cell flooding is observed. During the test, due to accumulation of liquid water inside the PEMFC, the humidity sensors will give misleading readings, and flooding cannot be identified correctly with inclusion of these humidity sensors in the analysis. With the proposed technique, the abnormal humidity measurements can be detected at an early stage. Results demonstrate that by re-moving the abnormal sensors, flooding can be identified with the remaining sensors, thus reliable health monitoring can be guaranteed during the PEMFC operation

    Feature Extraction from Indirect Monitoring in Marine Oil Separation Systems

    In this article, a study of characteristic vibrations of marine oils separation system is presented. Vibrations analysis allows for the extraction of representative features that could be related to the lifetime of their pieces. Actual measurements were carried out on these systems on Ro-Pax vessels to transport passengers and freight. The vibrations obtained were processed in the frequency domain and following this, they were used in a Genetic Neuro-Fuzzy System in order to design new predictive maintenance strategies.
