    Photometric stereo for 3D face reconstruction using non-linear illumination models

    Face recognition in presence of illumination changes, variant pose and different facial expressions is a challenging problem. In this paper, a method for 3D face reconstruction using photometric stereo and without knowing the illumination directions and facial expression is proposed in order to achieve improvement in face recognition. A dimensionality reduction method was introduced to represent the face deformations due to illumination variations and self shadows in a lower space. The obtained mapping function was used to determine the illumination direction of each input image and that direction was used to apply photometric stereo. Experiments with faces were performed in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. From the experiments it was shown that the proposed approach results very accurate 3D surfaces without knowing the light directions and with a very small differences compared to the case of known directions. As a result the proposed approach is more general and requires less restrictions enabling 3D face recognition methods to operate with less data

    Polarisation photometric stereo

    © 2017 This paper concerns a novel approach to fuse two-source photometric stereo (PS) data with polarisation information for complete surface normal recovery for smooth or slightly rough surfaces. PS is a well-established method but is limited in application by its need for three or more well-spaced and known illumination sources and Lambertian reflectance. Polarisation methods are less studied but have shown promise for smooth surfaces under highly controlled capture conditions. However, such methods suffer from inherent ambiguities and the depolarising effects of surface roughness. The method presented in this paper goes some way to overcome these limitations by fusing the most reliable information from PS and polarisation. PS is used with only two sources to deduce a constrained mapping of the surface normal at each point onto a 2D plane. Phase information from polarisation is used to deduce a mapping onto a different plane. The paper then shows how the full surface normal can be obtained from the two mappings. The method is tested on a range of real-world images to demonstrate the advantages over standalone applications of PS or polarisation methods

    The Impact of Surface Normals on Appearance

    The appearance of an object is the result of complex light interaction with the object. Beyond the basic interplay between incident light and the object\u27s material, a multitude of physical events occur between this illumination and the microgeometry at the point of incidence, and also beneath the surface. A given object, made as smooth and opaque as possible, will have a completely different appearance if either one of these attributes - amount of surface mesostructure (small-scale surface orientation) or translucency - is altered. Indeed, while they are not always readily perceptible, the small-scale features of an object are as important to its appearance as its material properties. Moreover, surface mesostructure and translucency are inextricably linked in an overall effect on appearance. In this dissertation, we present several studies examining the importance of surface mesostructure (small-scale surface orientation) and translucency on an object\u27s appearance. First, we present an empirical study that establishes how poorly a mesostructure estimation technique can perform when translucent objects are used as input. We investigate the two major factors in determining an object\u27s translucency: mean free path and scattering albedo. We exhaustively vary the settings of these parameters within realistic bounds, examining the subsequent blurring effect on the output of a common shape estimation technique, photometric stereo. Based on our findings, we identify a dramatic effect that the input of a translucent material has on the quality of the resultant estimated mesostructure. In the next project, we discuss an optimization technique for both refining estimated surface orientation of translucent objects and determining the reflectance characteristics of the underlying material. For a globally planar object, we use simulation and real measurements to show that the blurring effect on normals that was observed in the previous study can be recovered. The key to this is the observation that the normalization factor for recovered normals is proportional to the error on the accuracy of the blur kernel created from estimated translucency parameters. Finally, we frame the study of the impact of surface normals in a practical, image-based context. We discuss our low-overhead, editing tool for natural images that enables the user to edit surface mesostructure while the system automatically updates the appearance in the natural image. Because a single photograph captures an instant of the incredibly complex interaction of light and an object, there is a wealth of information to extract from a photograph. Given a photograph of an object in natural lighting, we allow mesostructure edits and infer any missing reflectance information in a realistically plausible way

    This thesis regards non-Lambertian surfaces and their challenges, solutions and study in computer vision. The physical theory for understanding the phenomenon is built first, using the Lambertian reflectance model, which defines Lambertian surfaces as ideally diffuse surfaces, whose luminance is isotropic and the luminous intensity obeys Lambert's cosine law. From these two assumptions, non-Lambertian surfaces violate at least the cosine law and are consequently specularly reflecting surfaces, whose perceived brightness is dependent from the viewpoint. Thus non-Lambertian surfaces violate also brightness and colour constancies, which assume that the brightness and colour of same real-world points stays constant across images. These assumptions are used, for example, in tracking and feature matching and thus non-Lambertian surfaces pose complications for object reconstruction and navigation among other tasks in the field of computer vision. After formulating the theoretical foundation of necessary physics and a more general reflectance model called the bi-directional reflectance distribution function, a comprehensive literature review into significant studies regarding non-Lambertian surfaces is conducted. The primary topics of the survey include photometric stereo and navigation systems, while considering other potential fields, such as fusion methods and illumination invariance. The goal of the survey is to formulate a detailed and in-depth answer to what methods can be used to solve the challenges posed by non-Lambertian surfaces, what are these methods' strengths and weaknesses, what are the used datasets and what remains to be answered by further research. After the survey, a dataset is collected and presented, and an outline of another dataset to be published in an upcoming paper is presented. Then a general discussion about the survey and the study is undertaken and conclusions along with proposed future steps are introduced

    3D SEM Surface Reconstruction: An Optimized, Adaptive, and Intelligent Approach

    Structural analysis of microscopic objects is a longstanding topic in several scientific disciplines, including biological, mechanical, and material sciences. The scanning electron microscope (SEM), as a promising imaging equipment has been around to determine the surface properties (e.g., compositions or geometries) of specimens by achieving increased magnification, contrast, and resolution greater than one nanometer. Whereas SEM micrographs still remain two-dimensional (2D), many research and educational questions truly require knowledge and information about their three-dimensional (3D) surface structures. Having 3D surfaces from SEM images would provide true anatomic shapes of micro samples which would allow for quantitative measurements and informative visualization of the systems being investigated. In this research project, we novel design and develop an optimized, adaptive, and intelligent multi-view approach named 3DSEM++ for 3D surface reconstruction of SEM images, making a 3D SEM dataset publicly and freely available to the research community. The work is expected to stimulate more interest and draw attention from the computer vision and multimedia communities to the fast-growing SEM application area
