Genus formula for generalized offset curves

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a formula for computing the genus of irreducible generalized offset curves to projective irreducible plane curves with only affine ordinary singularities over an algebraically closed field. The formula expresses the genus of the offset by means of the degree and the genus of the original curve

Arc lengths of rational Pythagorean–hodograph curves

In a recent paper (Lee et al., 2014) a family of rational Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) curves is introduced, characterized by constraints on the coefficients of a truncated Laurent series, and used to solve the first-order Hermite interpolation problem. Contrary to a claim made in this paper, it is shown that these rational PH curves have rational arc length functions only in degenerate cases, where the center of the Laurent series is a real value

Partial Degree Formulae for Plane Offset Curves

In this paper we present several formulae for computing the partial degrees of the defining polynomial of the offset curve to an irreducible affine plane curve given implicitly, and we see how these formulae particularize to the case of rational curves. In addition, we present a formula for computing the degree w.r.t the distance variable.Comment: 24 pages, no figure

Application of a metric for complex polynomials to bounded modification of planar Pythagorean-hodograph curves

By interpreting planar polynomial curves as complex-valued functions of a real parameter, an inner product, norm, metric function, and the notion of orthogonality may be defined for such curves. This approach is applied to the complex pre-image polynomials that generate planar Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) curves, to facilitate the implementation of bounded modifications of them that preserve their PH nature. The problems of bounded modifications under the constraint of fixed curve end points and end tangent directions, and of increasing the arc length of a PH curve by a prescribed amount, are also addressed

A unified Pythagorean hodograph approach to the medial axis transform and offset approximation

AbstractAlgorithms based on Pythagorean hodographs (PH) in the Euclidean plane and in Minkowski space share common goals, the main one being rationality of offsets of planar domains. However, only separate interpolation techniques based on these curves can be found in the literature. It was recently revealed that rational PH curves in the Euclidean plane and in Minkowski space are very closely related. In this paper, we continue the discussion of the interplay between spatial MPH curves and their associated planar PH curves from the point of view of Hermite interpolation. On the basis of this approach we design a new, simple interpolation algorithm. The main advantage of the unifying method presented lies in the fact that it uses, after only some simple additional computations, an arbitrary algorithm for interpolation using planar PH curves also for interpolation using spatial MPH curves. We present the functionality of our method for G1 Hermite data; however, one could also obtain higher order algorithms

    Offsets, Conchoids and Pedal Surfaces

We discuss three geometric constructions and their relations, namely the offset, the conchoid and the pedal construction. The offset surface F d of a given surface F is the set of points at fixed normal distance d of F. The conchoid surface G d of a given surface G is obtained by increasing the radius function by d with respect to a given reference point O. There is a nice relation between offsets and conchoids: The pedal surfaces of a family of offset surfaces are a family of conchoid surfaces. Since this relation is birational, a family of rational offset surfaces corresponds to a family of rational conchoid surfaces and vice versa. We present theoretical principles of this mapping and apply it to ruled surfaces and quadrics. Since these surfaces have rational offsets and conchoids, their pedal and inverse pedal surfaces are new classes of rational conchoid surfaces and rational offset surfaces

On the implicit equation of conics and quadrics offsets

    Get PDF
A new determinantal representation for the implicit equation of offsets to conics and quadrics is derived. It is simple, free of extraneous components and provides a very compact expanded form, these representations being very useful when dealing with geometric queries about offsets such as point positioning or solving intersection purposes. It is based on several classical results in ?A Treatise on the Analytic Geometry of Three Dimensions? by G. Salmon for offsets to non-degenerate conics and central quadrics. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad and by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the project MTM2017-88796-P
