    Application of Optimal Switching Using Adaptive Dynamic Programming in Power Electronics

    In this dissertation, optimal switching in switched systems using adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) is presented. Two applications in power electronics, namely single-phase inverter control and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control are studied using ADP. In both applications, the objective of the control problem is to design an optimal switching controller, which is also relatively robust to parameter uncertainties and disturbances in the system. An inverter is used to convert the direct current (DC) voltage to an alternating current (AC) voltage. The control scheme of the single-phase inverter uses a single function approximator, called critic, to evaluate the optimal cost and determine the optimal switching. After offline training of the critic, which is a function of system states and elapsed time, the resulting optimal weights are used in online control, to get a smooth output AC voltage in a feedback form. Simulations show the desirable performance of this controller with linear and nonlinear load and its relative robustness to parameter uncertainty and disturbances. Furthermore, the proposed controller is upgraded so that the inverter is suitable for single-phase variable frequency drives. Finally, as one of the few studies in the field of adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), the proposed controllers are implemented on a physical prototype to show the performance in practice. The torque control of PMSMs has become an interesting topic recently. A new approach based on ADP is proposed to control the torque, and consequently the speed of a PMSM when an unknown load torque is applied on it. The proposed controller achieves a fast transient response, low ripples and small steady-state error. The control algorithm uses two neural networks, called critic and actor. The former is utilized to evaluate the cost and the latter is used to generate control signals. The training is done once offline and the calculated optimal weights of actor network are used in online control to achieve fast and accurate torque control of PMSMs. This algorithm is compared with field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control based on space vector modulation (DTC-SVM). Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides desirable results under both accurate and uncertain modeled dynamics

    Speed Control of Induction Motor using LQG

    The electric motor is one of the technological developments which can support the production process. Not only in the manufacturing, but also in the transportation sector. The AC motor is divided into the synchronous and asynchronous motor. One type of asynchronous motor which widely used is the induction motor. In this study, the application of the IFOC control method and the LQG speed control method will be used to control the speed of an induction motor. The PID algorithm is also used as a comparison. Tests were carried out using MATLAB software. The speed variation and load variation are tested to validate the controller performance. PID is superior in terms of settling time and IAE. On the other hand, LQG is better in energy consumption. In terms of IAE, LQG has a higher value compared to PID by up to 56.67%. On the other hand, LQG is superior in terms of energy, which is 8.38% more efficient

    Probabilistic DHP adaptive critic for nonlinear stochastic control systems

    Following the recently developed algorithms for fully probabilistic control design for general dynamic stochastic systems (Herzallah & Káarnáy, 2011; Kárný, 1996), this paper presents the solution to the probabilistic dual heuristic programming (DHP) adaptive critic method (Herzallah & Káarnáy, 2011) and randomized control algorithm for stochastic nonlinear dynamical systems. The purpose of the randomized control input design is to make the joint probability density function of the closed loop system as close as possible to a predetermined ideal joint probability density function. This paper completes the previous work (Herzallah & Kárnáy, 2011; Kárný, 1996) by formulating and solving the fully probabilistic control design problem on the more general case of nonlinear stochastic discrete time systems. A simulated example is used to demonstrate the use of the algorithm and encouraging results have been obtained

    Optimal stochastic controller pushes the closed-loop behavior as close as possible to the desired one. The fully probabilistic design (FPD) uses probabilistic description of the desired closed loop and minimizes Kullback-Leibler divergence of the closed-loop description to the desired one. Practical exploitation of the fully probabilistic design control theory continues to be hindered by the computational complexities involved in numerically solving the associated stochastic dynamic programming problem. In particular very hard multivariate integration and an approximate interpolation of the involved multivariate functions. This paper proposes a new fully probabilistic contro algorithm that uses the adaptive critic methods to circumvent the need for explicitly evaluating the optimal value function, thereby dramatically reducing computational requirements.     Adaptive Critic Based Neuro-Observer

    A new Neural Network (NN) based observer design method for nonlinear systems represented by nonlinear dynamics and linear/nonlinear measurement is proposed in this paper. In this new approach, as the first step, the observer design problem is changed into a controller design problem by establishing the error dynamics, and then the Adaptive Critic (AC) based approach is applied on this error dynamics to design a \u27controller\u27, such that the errors are driven to zero. The resulting observer has inherent robustness from the AC based design approach. Some simulations are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach

    The demand for electrified vehicles has grown significantly over the last decade causing a shift in the automotive industry from traditional gasoline vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). With the growing evolution of EVs, high power density, and high efficiency of electric powertrains (e–drive) are of the utmost need to achieve an extended driving range. However, achieving an extended driving range with enhanced e-drive performance is still a bottleneck. The control algorithm of e–drive plays a vital role in its performance and reliability over time. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) based intelligent control methods have proven their continued success in fault determination and analysis of motor–drive systems. Considering the potential of intelligent control, this thesis investigates the legacy space vector modulation (SVM) strategy for wide–bandgap (WBG) inverter and conventional current PI controller for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control to reduce the switching loss, computation time and enhance transient performance in the available state–of–the-art e–drive systems.     Adaptive PI Hermite neural control for MIMO uncertain nonlinear systems

    [[abstract]]This paper presents an adaptive PI Hermite neural control (APIHNC) system for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) uncertain nonlinear systems. The proposed APIHNC system is composed of a neural controller and a robust compensator. The neural controller uses a three-layer Hermite neural network (HNN) to online mimic an ideal controller and the robust compensator is designed to eliminate the effect of the approximation error introduced by the neural controller upon the system stability in the Lyapunov sense. Moreover, a proportional–integral learning algorithm is derived to speed up the convergence of the tracking error. Finally, the proposed APIHNC system is applied to an inverted double pendulums and a two-link robotic manipulator. Simulation results verify that the proposed APIHNC system can achieve high-precision tracking performance.     Modelling and Detecting Faults of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors in Dynamic Operations

    Paper VI is excluded from the dissertation until the article will be published.Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have played a key role in commercial and industrial applications, i.e. electric vehicles and wind turbines. They are popular due to their high efficiency, control simplification and large torque-to-size ratio although they are expensive. A fault will eventually occur in an operating PMSM, either by improper maintenance or wear from thermal and mechanical stresses. The most frequent PMSM faults are bearing faults, short-circuit and eccentricity. PMSM may also suffer from demagnetisation, which is unique in permanent magnet machines. Condition monitoring or fault diagnosis schemes are necessary for detecting and identifying these faults early in their incipient state, e.g. partial demagnetisation and inter-turn short circuit. Successful fault classification will ensure safe operations, speed up the maintenance process and decrease unexpected downtime and cost. The research in recent years is drawn towards fault analysis under dynamic operating conditions, i.e. variable load and speed. Most of these techniques have focused on the use of voltage, current and torque, while magnetic flux density in the air-gap or the proximity of the motor has not yet been fully capitalised. This dissertation focuses on two main research topics in modelling and diagnosis of faulty PMSM in dynamic operations. The first problem is to decrease the computational burden of modelling and analysis techniques. The first contributions are new and faster methods for computing the permeance network model and quadratic time-frequency distributions. Reducing their computational burden makes them more attractive in analysis or fault diagnosis. The second contribution is to expand the model description of a simpler model. This can be achieved through a field reconstruction model with a magnet library and a description of both magnet defects and inter-turn short circuits. The second research topic is to simplify the installation and complexity of fault diagnosis schemes in PMSM. The aim is to reduce required sensors of fault diagnosis schemes, regardless of operation profiles. Conventional methods often rely on either steady-state or predefined operation profiles, e.g. start-up. A fault diagnosis scheme robust to any speed changes is desirable since a fault can be detected regardless of operations. The final contribution is the implementation of reinforcement learning in an active learning scheme to address the imbalance dataset problem. Samples from a faulty PMSM are often initially unavailable and expensive to acquire. Reinforcement learning with a weighted reward function might balance the dataset to enhance the trained fault classifier’s performance.publishedVersio
