Drone-based Integration of Hyperspectral Imaging and Magnetics for Mineral Exploration
The advent of unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) as disruptive technology has a lasting impact on remote sensing, geophysics and most geosciences. Small, lightweight, and low-cost UAS enable researchers and surveyors to acquire earth observation data in higher spatial and spectral resolution as compared to airborne and satellite data. UAS-based applications range from rapid topographic mapping using photogrammetric techniques to hyperspectral and geophysical measurements of surface and subsurface geology. UAS surveys contribute to identifying metal deposits, monitoring of mine sites and can reveal arising environmental issues associated with mining. Further, affordable UAS technology will boost exploration data availability and expertise in the global south.
This thesis investigates the application of UAS-based multi-sensor data for mineral exploration, in particular the integration of hyperspectral imagers, magnetometers and digital cameras (covering the visible red, green, blue light spectrum). UAS-based research is maturing, however the aforementioned methods are not unified effectively. RGB-based photogrammetry is used to investigate topography and surface texture. Image spectrometers measure mineral-specific surface signatures. Magnetometers detect geomagnetic field changes caused by magnetic minerals at surface and depth. The integration of such UAS sensor-based methods in this thesis augments exploration potential with non-invasive, high-resolution, safe, rapid and practical survey methods.
UAS-based surveying acquired, processed and integrated data from three distinct test sites. The sites are located in Finland (Fe-Ti-V at Otanmäki; apatite at Siilinjärvi) and Greenland (Ni-Cu-PGE at Qullissat, Disko Island) and were chosen as geologically diverse areas in subarctic to arctic environments. Restricted accessibility, unfavourable atmospheric conditions, dark rocks, debris and vegetation cover and low solar illumination were common features. While the topography in Finland was moderately flat, a steep landscape challenged the Greenland field work. These restraints meant that acquisitions varied from site to site and how data was integrated and interpreted is dependent on the commodity of interest.
Iron-based spectral absorption and magnetic mineral response were detected using hyperspectral and magnetic surveying in Otanmäki. Multi-sensor-based image feature detection and classification combined with magnetic forward modelling enabled seamless geologic mapping in Siilinjärvi. Detailed magnetic inversion and multispectral photogrammetry led to the construction of a comprehensive 3D model of magmatic exploration targets in Greenland. Ground truth at different intensity was employed to verify UAS-based data interpretations during all case studies.
Laboratory analysis was applied when deemed necessary to acquire geologic-mineralogic validation (e.g., X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy for mineral identification to establish lithologic domains, magnetic susceptibility measurements for subsurface modelling), for example for trace amounts of magnetite in carbonatite (Siilinjärvi) and native iron occurrence in basalt (Qullissat). Technical achievements were the integration of a multicopter-based prototype fluxgate-magnetometer data from different survey altitudes with ground truth, and a feasibility study with a high-speed multispectral image system for fixed-wing UAS.
The employed case studies transfer the experiences made towards general recommendations for UAS application-based multi-sensor integration. This thesis highlights the feasibility of UAS-based surveying at target scale (1–50 km2) and solidifies versatile survey approaches for multi-sensor integration.

Machine-Vision-Based Pose Estimation System Using Sensor Fusion for Autonomous Satellite Grappling
When capturing a non-cooperative satellite during an on-orbit satellite servicing mission, the position and orientation (pose) of the satellite with respect to the servicing vessel is required in order to guide the robotic arm of the vessel towards the satellite. The main objective of this research is the development of a machine vision-based pose estimation system for capturing a non-cooperative satellite. The proposed system finds the satellite pose using three types of natural geometric features: circles, lines and points, and it merges data from two monocular cameras and three different algorithms (one for each type of geometric feature) to increase the robustness of the pose estimation. It is assumed that the satellite has an interface ring (which is used to attach a satellite to the launch vehicle) and that the cameras are mounted on the robot end effector which contains the capture tool to grapple the satellite. The three algorithms are based on a feature extraction and detection scheme to provide the detected geometric features on the camera images that belong to the satellite, which its geometry is assumed to be known. Since the projection of a circle on the image plane is an ellipse, an ellipse detection system is used to find the 3D-coordinates of the center of the interface ring and its normal vector using its corresponding detected ellipse on the image plane. The sensor and data fusion is performed in two steps. In the first step, a pose solver system finds pose using the conjugate gradient method to optimize a cost function and to reduce the re-projection error of the detected features, which reduces the pose estimation error. In the second step, an extended Kalman filter merges data from the pose solver and the ellipse detection system, and gives the final estimated pose. The inputs of the pose estimation system are the camera images and the outputs are the position and orientation of the satellite with respect to the end-effector where the cameras are mounted. Virtual and real simulations using a full-scale realistic satellite-mockup and a 7DOF robotic manipulator were performed to evaluate the system performance. Two different lighting conditions and three scenarios each with a different set of features were used. Tracking of the satellite was performed successfully. The total translation error is between 25 mm and 50 mm and the total rotation error is between 2 deg and 3 deg when the target is at 0.7 m from the end effector
Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles
MenciĂłn Internacional en el tĂtulo de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
(UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform
complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with
solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly
based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition,
this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main
source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in
order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes.
The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision
techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of
the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK
descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases
the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved
based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies.
(II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to
sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection
algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by
analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion
ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points
from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the
position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision.
Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle,
and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver.
(III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine
the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide
a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the
flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in
order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to
avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints.
All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor
and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as
illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other
systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate
algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several
previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in
the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms.
Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages
of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is
considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy
of the UAVs for real-world applications.
homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion
A continuacion,
Lunar ore geology and feasibility of ore mineral detection using a far-IR spectrometer
Lunar sulfides and oxides are a significant source of noble and base metals
and will be vital for future human colonies' self-sustainability. Sulfide
detection (pyrite and troilite) applies to many technological fields and use
cases, for example, as a raw material source (available in situ on the Lunar
surface) for new solar panel production methods. Ilmenite is the primary iron
and titanium ore on the Moon and can provide helium-3 for nuclear fusion and
oxygen for rocket fuel. The most important ore minerals have prominent
absorption peaks in a narrow far-infrared (FIR) wavelength range of 20-40
m, much stronger than the spectral features of other common minerals,
including significant silicates, sulfates, and carbonates. Our simulations
based on the linear mixing of pyrite with the silicates mentioned above
indicated that areas containing at least 10-20% pyrite could be detected from
the orbit in the FIR range. MIRORES, Multiplanetary far-IR ORE Spectrometer,
proposed here, would operate with a resolution down to <5 m, enabling the
detection of areas covered by 2-3 m of pyrite (or ilmenite) on a surface of
~17 m from an altitude of 50 km, creating possibilities for detecting large
and local smaller orebodies along with their stockworks. The use of the
Cassegrain optical system achieves this capability. MIRORES will measure
radiation in eight narrow bands (0.3 m in width) that can include up to
five bands centered on the ore mineral absorption bands, for example, 24.3,
24.9, 27.6, 34.2, and 38.8 m for pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite,
ilmenite, and troilite, respectively. The instrument size is 32 32
42 cm, and the mass is <10 kg, which fits the standard microsatellite
requirements.Comment: 41 pages, 14 figure
Multimodal Image Fusion and Its Applications.
Image fusion integrates different modality images to provide comprehensive information of the image content, increasing interpretation capabilities and producing more reliable results. There are several advantages of combining multi-modal images, including improving geometric corrections, complementing data for improved classification, and enhancing features for analysis...etc.
This thesis develops the image fusion idea in the context of two domains: material microscopy and biomedical imaging. The proposed methods include image modeling, image indexing, image segmentation, and image registration. The common theme behind all proposed methods is the use of complementary information from multi-modal images to achieve better registration, feature extraction, and detection performances.
In material microscopy, we propose an anomaly-driven image fusion framework to perform the task of material microscopy image analysis and anomaly detection. This framework is based on a probabilistic model that enables us to index, process and characterize the data with systematic and well-developed statistical tools. In biomedical imaging, we focus on the multi-modal registration problem for functional MRI (fMRI) brain images which improves the performance of brain activation detection.PhDElectrical Engineering: SystemsUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
