    Cognitive Radio Programming: Existing Solutions and Open Issues

    Software defined radio (sdr) technology has evolved rapidly and is now reaching market maturity, providing solutions for cognitive radio applications. Still, a lot of issues have yet to be studied. In this paper, we highlight the constraints imposed by recent radio protocols and we present current architectures and solutions for programming sdr. We also list the challenges to overcome in order to reach mastery of future cognitive radios systems.La radio logicielle a évolué rapidement pour atteindre la maturité nécessaire pour être mise sur le marché, offrant de nouvelles solutions pour les applications de radio cognitive. Cependant, beaucoup de problèmes restent à étudier.     How to stretch system reliability exploiting mission constraints: A practical roadmap for industries

    Reliability analysis can be committed to companies by customers willing to verify whether their products comply with the major international standards or simply to verify the design prior of market deployment. Nevertheless, these analyses may be required at the very preliminary stages of design or when the design is already in progress due to low organizational capabilities or simple delay in the project implementation process. The results sometime maybe be far from the market or customer target with a subsequent need to redesign the whole asset. Of course, not all the cases fall in the worst scenario and maybe with some additional consideration on mission definition it is possible to comply with the proposed reliability targets. In this paper the author will provide an overview on the approach which could be followed to achieve the reliability target even when the project is still on-going providing a practical case study

    A cross-platform OpenVX library for FPGA accelerators

    FPGAs are an excellent platform to implement computer vision applications, since these applications tend to offer a high level of parallelism with many data-independent operations. However, the freedom in the solution design space of FPGAs represents a problem because each solution must be individually designed, verified, and tuned. The emergence of High Level Synthesis (HLS) helps solving this problem and has allowed the implementation of open programming standards as OpenVX for computer vision applications on FPGAs, such as the HiF1ipVX library developed exclusively for Xilinx devices. Although with the HiF1ipVX library, designers can develop solutions efficiently on Xilinx, they do not have an approach to port and run their code on FPGAs from other manufacturers. This work extends the HiFlipVX capabilities in two significant ways: supporting Intel FPGA devices and enabling execution on discrete FPGA accelerators. To provide both without affecting user-facing code, the new carried out implementation combines two HLS programming models: C++, using Intel''s system of tasks, and OpenCL, which provides the CPU interoperability. Comparing with pure OpenCL implementations, this work reduces kernel dispatch resources, saving up to 24% of ALUT resources for each kernel in a graph, and improves performance 2.6 x and energy consumption 1.6 x on average for a set of representative applications, compared with state-of-the-art frameworks

    Design of high-speed and low-power finite-word-length PID controllers.

    International audienceASIC or FPGA implementation of a finite word-length PID controller requires a double expertise : in control system and hardware design. In this paper, we only focus on the hardware side of the problem. We show how to design configurable fixed-point PIDs to satisfy application srequiring minimal power consumption, or high control-rate, or both together. As multiply operation is the engine of PID, we experienced three algorithms : Booth, modified Booth, and a new recursive multi-bit multiplication algorithm. This later enables the construction of finely grained PID structures with bit-velvel and unit-time precsion. Such a feature permits to tailor the PID to the desired performance and power budget. All PIDs are emplemented at register-transfer-level (RTL) level as technology-independent reusable IP-cores. They are reconfigurable according to two compile-time constants : set-point word-length and latency.     Contribution au domaine de la conception d’objets communicants embarqués basse consommation et autonomes en énergie

    This report proposes a synthesis of my research and teaching activities. Since 2008, as associate professor at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, I did my research into the MCSOC team from the LEAT laboratory. For nearly 15 years, my activity is focused on the design of embedded communicating objects, with a strong emphasis for high level approach allowing, early in the design flow, to model and optimize the performance as well as the consumed energy. Those system-level approaches are more and more relevant over the last few years and become a must-have solution for designing efficient embedded systems. My activity on energy harvesting for autonomous systems brings an original contribution to this domain and has a national and international impact. This document is organized in two parts: the first part is a synthesis of my research and teaching activity, while the second one presents in details my research work, putting in evidence my contributions and innovative aspects. The manuscript ends with a scientific overview as well as some perspectives.Ce manuscrit présente une synthèse de mes travaux de recherche. Depuis septembre 2008, date de ma nomination en tant que Maître de Conférences à l’Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis, j’ai effectué mes travaux de recherche au sein de la thématique MCSOC (Modélisation, Conception Système d’Objets Communicants) du laboratoire LEAT (Université de Nice Sophia Antipolis, UMR CNRS 7248). Depuis maintenant près de 15 ans, mes travaux de recherche s’intéressent au domaine de la conception d’objets communicants embarqués avec une évolution forte vers des approches de haut niveau d’abstraction permettant tôt dans le flot de conception, de modéliser et d’optimiser les performances et la consommation d’énergie. Ces approches de niveau système n’ont cessé de prendre de l’ampleur ces dernières années et s’installent aujourd’hui comme une solution incontournable du domaine de la conception de systèmes embarqués. Mes travaux plus spécifiques sur l’autonomie énergétique de ces systèmes apportent une contribution originale au domaine et ont un rayonnement national et international. Ce document est organisé en deux parties : la première partie propose une synthèse des travaux de recherche et d’enseignement ; la seconde présente de manière détaillée mes travaux de recherche en mettant en avant toutes ses contributions et originalités.     FPGA-based real-time moving target detection system for unmanned aerial vehicle application

    Moving target detection is the most common task for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to find and track object of interest from a bird's eye view in mobile aerial surveillance for civilian applications such as search and rescue operation. The complex detection algorithm can be implemented in a real-time embedded system using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This paper presents the development of real-time moving target detection System-on-Chip (SoC) using FPGA for deployment on a UAV. The detection algorithm utilizes area-based image registration technique which includes motion estimation and object segmentation processes. The moving target detection system has been prototyped on a low-cost Terasic DE2-115 board mounted with TRDB-D5M camera. The system consists of Nios II processor and stream-oriented dedicated hardware accelerators running at 100 MHz clock rate, achieving 30-frame per second processing speed for 640 × 480 pixels' resolution greyscale videos

    A PUF-and biometric-based lightweight hardware solution to increase security at sensor nodes

    Security is essential in sensor nodes which acquire and transmit sensitive data. However, the constraints of processing, memory and power consumption are very high in these nodes. Cryptographic algorithms based on symmetric key are very suitable for them. The drawback is that secure storage of secret keys is required. In this work, a low-cost solution is presented to obfuscate secret keys with Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs), which exploit the hardware identity of the node. In addition, a lightweight fingerprint recognition solution is proposed, which can be implemented in low-cost sensor nodes. Since biometric data of individuals are sensitive, they are also obfuscated with PUFs. Both solutions allow authenticating the origin of the sensed data with a proposed dual-factor authentication protocol. One factor is the unique physical identity of the trusted sensor node that measures them. The other factor is the physical presence of the legitimate individual in charge of authorizing their transmission. Experimental results are included to prove how the proposed PUF-based solution can be implemented with the SRAMs of commercial Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chips which belong to the communication module of the sensor node. Implementation results show how the proposed fingerprint recognition based on the novel texture-based feature named QFingerMap16 (QFM) can be implemented fully inside a low-cost sensor node. Robustness, security and privacy issues at the proposed sensor nodes are discussed and analyzed with experimental results from PUFs and fingerprints taken from public and standard databases.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad TEC2014-57971-R, TEC2017-83557-

    Systematic Design Space Exploration of Dynamic Dataflow Programs for Multi-core Platforms

    The limitations of clock frequency and power dissipation of deep sub-micron CMOS technology have led to the development of massively parallel computing platforms. They consist of dozens or hundreds of processing units and offer a high degree of parallelism. Taking advantage of that parallelism and transforming it into high program performances requires the usage of appropriate parallel programming models and paradigms. Currently, a common practice is to develop parallel applications using methods evolving directly from sequential programming models. However, they lack the abstractions to properly express the concurrency of the processes. An alternative approach is to implement dataflow applications, where the algorithms are described in terms of streams and operators thus their parallelism is directly exposed. Since algorithms are described in an abstract way, they can be easily ported to different types of platforms. Several dataflow models of computation (MoCs) have been formalized so far. They differ in terms of their expressiveness (ability to handle dynamic behavior) and complexity of analysis. So far, most of the research efforts have focused on the simpler cases of static dataflow MoCs, where many analyses are possible at compile-time and several optimization problems are greatly simplified. At the same time, for the most expressive and the most difficult to analyze dynamic dataflow (DDF), there is still a dearth of tools supporting a systematic and automated analysis minimizing the programming efforts of the designer. The objective of this Thesis is to provide a complete framework to analyze, evaluate and refactor DDF applications expressed using the RVC-CAL language. The methodology relies on a systematic design space exploration (DSE) examining different design alternatives in order to optimize the chosen objective function while satisfying the constraints. The research contributions start from a rigorous DSE problem formulation. This provides a basis for the definition of a complete and novel analysis methodology enabling systematic performance improvements of DDF applications. Different stages of the methodology include exploration heuristics, performance estimation and identification of refactoring directions. All of the stages are implemented as appropriate software tools. The contributions are substantiated by several experiments performed with complex dynamic applications on different types of physical platforms

    Embedded electronic systems driven by run-time reconfigurable hardware

    Abstract This doctoral thesis addresses the design of embedded electronic systems based on run-time reconfigurable hardware technology –available through SRAM-based FPGA/SoC devices– aimed at contributing to enhance the life quality of the human beings. This work does research on the conception of the system architecture and the reconfiguration engine that provides to the FPGA the capability of dynamic partial reconfiguration in order to synthesize, by means of hardware/software co-design, a given application partitioned in processing tasks which are multiplexed in time and space, optimizing thus its physical implementation –silicon area, processing time, complexity, flexibility, functional density, cost and power consumption– in comparison with other alternatives based on static hardware (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.). The design flow of such technology is evaluated through the prototyping of several engineering applications (control systems, mathematical coprocessors, complex image processors, etc.), showing a high enough level of maturity for its exploitation in the industry.Resumen Esta tesis doctoral abarca el diseño de sistemas electrónicos embebidos basados en tecnología hardware dinámicamente reconfigurable –disponible a través de dispositivos lógicos programables SRAM FPGA/SoC– que contribuyan a la mejora de la calidad de vida de la sociedad. Se investiga la arquitectura del sistema y del motor de reconfiguración que proporcione a la FPGA la capacidad de reconfiguración dinámica parcial de sus recursos programables, con objeto de sintetizar, mediante codiseño hardware/software, una determinada aplicación particionada en tareas multiplexadas en tiempo y en espacio, optimizando así su implementación física –área de silicio, tiempo de procesado, complejidad, flexibilidad, densidad funcional, coste y potencia disipada– comparada con otras alternativas basadas en hardware estático (MCU, DSP, GPU, ASSP, ASIC, etc.).
