An Optimization Theoretical Framework for Resource Allocation over Wireless Networks
With the advancement of wireless technologies, wireless networking has become ubiquitous owing to the great demand of pervasive mobile applications. Some fundamental challenges exist for the next generation wireless network design such as time varying nature of wireless channels, co-channel interferences, provisioning of heterogeneous type of services, etc. So how to overcome these difficulties and improve the system performance have become an important research topic.
Dynamic resource allocation is a general strategy to control the interferences and enhance the performance of wireless networks. The basic idea behind dynamic resource allocation is to utilize the channel more efficiently by sharing the spectrum and reducing
interference through optimizing parameters such as the
transmitting power, symbol transmission rate, modulation scheme, coding scheme, bandwidth, etc. Moreover, the network performance can be further improved by introducing diversity, such as
multiuser, time, frequency, and space diversity. In addition, cross layer approach for resource allocation can provide advantages such as low overhead, more efficiency, and direct end-to-end QoS provision.
The designers for next generation wireless networks face the common problem of how to optimize the system objective under the user Quality of Service (QoS) constraint. There is a need of unified but general optimization framework for resource allocation
to allow taking into account a diverse set of objective functions with various QoS requirements, while considering all kinds of diversity and cross layer approach. We propose an optimization
theoretical framework for resource allocation and apply these ideas to different network situations such as:
1.Centralized resource allocation with fairness constraint
2.Distributed resource allocation using game theory
3.OFDMA resource allocation
4.Cross layer approach
On the whole, we develop a universal view of the whole wireless networks from multiple dimensions: time, frequency, space, user, and layers. We develop some schemes to fully utilize the resources. The success of the proposed research will significantly
improve the way how to design and analyze resource allocation over wireless networks. In addition, the cross-layer optimization nature of the problem provides an innovative insight into vertical
integration of wireless networks
Recently, iterative processing has been widely considered to achieve near-capacity performance and reliable high data rate transmission, for future wireless communication systems. However, such an iterative processing poses significant challenges for efficient receiver design. In this thesis, iterative receiver combining multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection with channel decoding is investigated for high data rate transmission. The convergence, the performance and the computational complexity of the iterative receiver for MIMO-OFDM system are considered. First, we review the most relevant hard-output and soft-output MIMO detection algorithms based on sphere decoding, K-Best decoding, and interference cancellation. Consequently, a low-complexity K-best (LCK- Best) based decoder is proposed in order to substantially reduce the computational complexity without significant performance degradation. We then analyze the convergence behaviors of combining these detection algorithms with various forward error correction codes, namely LTE turbo decoder and LDPC decoder with the help of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts. Based on this analysis, a new scheduling order of the required inner and outer iterations is suggested. The performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated in various LTE channel environments, and compared with other MIMO detection schemes. Secondly, the computational complexity of the iterative receiver with different channel coding techniques is evaluated and compared for different modulation orders and coding rates. Simulation results show that our proposed approaches achieve near optimal performance but more importantly it can substantially reduce the computational complexity of the system. From a practical point of view, fixed-point representation is usually used in order to reduce the hardware costs in terms of area, power consumption and execution time. Therefore, we present efficient fixed point arithmetic of the proposed iterative receiver based on LC-KBest decoder. Additionally, the impact of the channel estimation on the system performance is studied. The proposed iterative receiver is tested in a real-time environment using the MIMO WARP platform.
Transmission strategies for broadband wireless systems with MMSE turbo equalization
This monograph details efficient transmission strategies for single-carrier wireless broadband communication systems employing iterative (turbo) equalization. In particular, the first part focuses on the design and analysis of low complexity and robust MMSE-based turbo equalizers operating in the frequency domain. Accordingly, several novel receiver schemes are presented which improve the convergence properties and error performance over the existing turbo equalizers. The second part discusses concepts and algorithms that aim to increase the power and spectral efficiency of the communication system by efficiently exploiting the available resources at the transmitter side based upon the channel conditions. The challenging issue encountered in this context is how the transmission rate and power can be optimized, while a specific convergence constraint of the turbo equalizer is guaranteed.
In diesem Zusammenhang
existierende SC-MMSE Turbo-Entzerrer in verschiedenen Kanalumgebungen
Hilfe sogenannter Korrelationsdiagramme untersucht.
senderseitiger Singular-Value-Decomposition (SVD)-basierter Vorcodierung
untersucht.

Performance analysis of FBMC over OFDM in Cognitive Radio Network
Cognitive Radio (CR) system is an adaptive, reconfigurable communication system that can intuitively adjust its parameters to meet users or network demands. The major objective of CR is to provide a platform for the Secondary User (SU) to fully utilize the available spectrum resource by sensing the existence of spectrum holes without causing interference to the Primary User (PU). However, PU detection has been one of the main challenges in CR technology. In comparison to traditional wireless communication systems, due to the Cross-Channel Interference (CCI) from the adjacent channels used by SU to PU, CR system now poses new challenges to Resource Allocation (RA) problems. Past efforts have been focussed on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based CR systems. However, OFDM technique show various limitations in CR application due to its enormous spectrum leakage. Filter Bank based Multicarrier (FBMC) has been proposed as a promising Multicarrier Modulation (MCM) candidate that has numerous advantages over OFDM. In this dissertation, a critical analysis of the performance of FBMC over OFDM was studied, and CR system was used as the testing platform. Firstly, the problem of spectrum sensing of OFDM based CR systems in contrast to FBMC based were surveyed from literature point of view, then the performance of the two schemes was analysed and compared from the spectral efficiency point of view. A resource allocation algorithm was proposed where much attention was focused on interference and power constraint. The proposed algorithms have been verified using MATLAB simulations, however, numerical results show that FBMC can attain higher spectrum efficiency and attractive benefit in terms of spectrum sensing as opposed to OFDM. The contributions of this dissertation have heightened the interest in more research and findings on how FBMC can be improved for future application CR systems
Novel LDPC coding and decoding strategies: design, analysis, and algorithms
In this digital era, modern communication systems play an essential part in nearly every aspect of life, with examples ranging from mobile networks and satellite communications to Internet and data transfer. Unfortunately, all communication systems in a practical setting are noisy, which indicates that we can either improve the physical characteristics of the channel or find a possible systematical solution, i.e. error control coding. The history of error control coding dates back to 1948 when Claude Shannon published his celebrated work âA Mathematical Theory of Communicationâ, which built a framework for channel coding, source coding and information theory. For the first time, we saw evidence for the existence of channel codes, which enable reliable communication as long as the information rate of the code does not surpass the so-called channel capacity. Nevertheless, in the following 60 years none of the codes have been proven closely to approach the theoretical bound until the arrival of turbo codes and the renaissance of LDPC codes. As a strong contender of turbo codes, the advantages of LDPC codes include parallel implementation of decoding algorithms and, more crucially, graphical construction of codes. However, there are also some drawbacks to LDPC codes, e.g. significant performance degradation due to the presence of short cycles or very high decoding latency. In this thesis, we will focus on the practical realisation of finite-length LDPC codes and devise algorithms to tackle those issues.
Firstly, rate-compatible (RC) LDPC codes with short/moderate block lengths are investigated on the basis of optimising the graphical structure of the tanner graph (TG), in order to achieve a variety of code rates (0.1 < R < 0.9) by only using a single encoder-decoder pair. As is widely recognised in the literature, the presence of short cycles considerably reduces the overall performance of LDPC codes which significantly limits their application in communication systems. To reduce the impact of short cycles effectively for different code rates, algorithms for counting short cycles and a graph-related metric called Extrinsic Message Degree (EMD) are applied with the development of the proposed puncturing and extension techniques. A complete set of simulations are carried out to demonstrate that the proposed RC designs can largely minimise the performance loss caused by puncturing or extension.
Secondly, at the decoding end, we study novel decoding strategies which compensate for the negative effect of short cycles by reweighting part of the extrinsic messages exchanged between the nodes of a TG. The proposed reweighted belief propagation (BP) algorithms aim to implement efficient decoding, i.e. accurate signal reconstruction and low decoding latency, for LDPC codes via various design methods. A variable factor appearance probability belief propagation (VFAP-BP) algorithm is proposed along with an improved version called a locally-optimized reweighted (LOW)-BP algorithm, both of which can be employed to enhance decoding performance significantly for regular and irregular LDPC codes. More importantly, the optimisation of reweighting parameters only takes place in an offline stage so that no additional computational complexity is required during the real-time decoding process.
Lastly, two iterative detection and decoding (IDD) receivers are presented for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a spatial multiplexing configuration. QR decomposition (QRD)-type IDD receivers utilise the proposed multiple-feedback (MF)-QRD or variable-M (VM)-QRD detection algorithm with a standard BP decoding algorithm, while knowledge-aided (KA)-type receivers are equipped with a simple soft parallel interference cancellation (PIC) detector and the proposed reweighted BP decoders. In the uncoded scenario, the proposed MF-QRD and VM-QRD algorithms are shown to approach optimal performance, yet require a reduced computational complexity. In the LDPC-coded scenario, simulation results have illustrated that the proposed QRD-type IDD receivers can offer near-optimal performance after a small number of detection/decoding iterations and the proposed KA-type IDD receivers significantly outperform receivers using alternative decoding algorithms, while requiring similar decoding complexity
Gemeinsame Kommunikation und Positionierung basierend auf Interleave-Division Multiplexing
Interest in joint communication and positioning is steadily increasing because the combination
of both techniques offers a wide range of advantages. On the one hand, synergy effects
between communication and positioning like enhanced resource allocation can be exploited.
On the other hand, new applications are enabled. Examples comprise a wide area of interest
and include the automated localisation of emergency calls, tracking and guiding fire fighters or
policemen on a mission, monitoring people with special needs in a hospital or a nursing home,
asset tracking, location-based services and so forth. However, it is a challenging task to combine
communication and positioning because their prerequisites are quite different. On the one
hand, high data rates with little training overhead and low bit error rate are desirable for communication.
On the other hand, localisation aims at precise position estimates. Much training
is typically spent for that purpose. Given a single transmit signal supporting communication as
well as positioning, it is very difficult to fulfil all requirements at the same time. Hence, a flexible
configuration is desirable for a joint communication and positioning system with a unified signal
structure in order to adjust the tradeoff between both parts to the instantaneous needs.
In this thesis, a new system concept for joint communication and positioning with a unified signal
structure is proposed and investigated. The system concept is based on interleave-division
multiplexing (IDM) in combination with pilot layer aided channel estimation (PLACE) and multilateration
via the time of arrival (TOA). On the one hand, IDM seems to be a suitable candidate
for a joint communication and positioning system because of its flexible but simple transmitter
structure. On the other hand, multilateration via the TOA enables precise localisation. The
connection between the communication and the positioning part is accomplished via an enhanced
PLACE unit. Through the incorporation of a channel parameter estimator, not only the
channel coefficients of the equivalent discrete-time channel model, that are needed for data
detection, but also parameters of the physical channel, that are required for positioning, can
be estimated. A priori information about pulse shaping and receive filtering is exploited for that
purpose.
The main aim of this thesis is to show the feasibility of the proposed joint communication and
positioning system. Hence, a fundamental system setup is analysed systematically. Since many
applications of joint communication and positioning are located in urban or indoor environments,
a very high positioning accuracy in the centimetre region is desirable. Unfortunately,
positioning is most challenging in these environments due to severe multipath propagation. In
order to achieve the required accuracies, the positioning part of the proposed system concept
can be complemented by other localisation sources like GPS/Galileo and/or motion sensors via
sensor fusion. However, the stand-alone performance of the proposed joint communication and
positioning system is evaluated by means of Monte Carlo simulations in this thesis. The achieved
results are compared to performance limits in terms of Cramer-Rao lower bounds. In order
to improve the overall system performance and to enable sensor fusion, soft information with
respect to the parameter as well as the position estimates is taken into account. The accuracy
of the soft information is analysed with the help of curvature measures. Altogether, promising
results are obtained.
of Arrival (TOA) genannt.
In Rahmen
analysiert. Insgesamt werden vielversprechende Ergebnisse erzielt
