    An Exploration of Recent Intelligent Image Analysis Techniques for Visual Pavement Surface Condition Assessment.

    Road pavement condition assessment is essential for maintenance, asset management, and budgeting for pavement infrastructure. Countries allocate a substantial annual budget to maintain and improve local, regional, and national highways. Pavement condition is assessed by measuring several pavement characteristics such as roughness, surface skid resistance, pavement strength, deflection, and visual surface distresses. Visual inspection identifies and quantifies surface distresses, and the condition is assessed using standard rating scales. This paper critically analyzes the research trends in the academic literature, professional practices and current commercial solutions for surface condition ratings by civil authorities. We observe that various surface condition rating systems exist, and each uses its own defined subset of pavement characteristics to evaluate pavement conditions. It is noted that automated visual sensing systems using intelligent algorithms can help reduce the cost and time required for assessing the condition of pavement infrastructure, especially for local and regional road networks. However, environmental factors, pavement types, and image collection devices are significant in this domain and lead to challenging variations. Commercial solutions for automatic pavement assessment with certain limitations exist. The topic is also a focus of academic research. More recently, academic research has pivoted toward deep learning, given that image data is now available in some form. However, research to automate pavement distress assessment often focuses on the regional pavement condition assessment standard that a country or state follows. We observe that the criteria a region adopts to make the evaluation depends on factors such as pavement construction type, type of road network in the area, flow and traffic, environmental conditions, and region\u27s economic situation. We summarized a list of publicly available datasets for distress detection and pavement condition assessment. We listed approaches focusing on crack segmentation and methods concentrating on distress detection and identification using object detection and classification. We segregated the recent academic literature in terms of the camera\u27s view and the dataset used, the year and country in which the work was published, the F1 score, and the architecture type. It is observed that the literature tends to focus more on distress identification ( presence/absence detection) but less on distress quantification, which is essential for developing approaches for automated pavement rating

    ROADS—Rover for Bituminous Pavement Distress Survey: An Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) Prototype for Pavement Distress Evaluation

    Maintenance has a major impact on the financial plan of road managers. To ameliorate road conditions and reduce safety constraints, distress evaluation methods should be efficient and should avoid being time consuming. That is why road cadastral catalogs should be updated periodically, and interventions should be provided for specific management plans. This paper focuses on the setting of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) for road pavement distress monitoring, and the Rover for bituminOus pAvement Distress Survey (ROADS) prototype is presented in this paper. ROADS has a multisensory platform fixed on it that is able to collect different parameters. Navigation and environment sensors support a two-image acquisition system which is composed of a high-resolution digital camera and a multispectral imaging sensor. The Pavement Condition Index (PCI) and the Image Distress Quantity (IDQ) are, respectively, calculated by field activities and image computation. The model used to calculate the I-ROADS index from PCI had an accuracy of 74.2%. Such results show that the retrieval of PCI from image-based approach is achievable and values can be categorized as "Good"/"Preventive Maintenance", "Fair"/"Rehabilitation", "Poor"/"Reconstruction", which are ranges of the custom PCI ranting scale and represents a typical repair strategy

    Automatic Crack Detection in Built Infrastructure Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    This paper addresses the problem of crack detection which is essential for health monitoring of built infrastructure. Our approach includes two stages, data collection using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and crack detection using histogram analysis. For the data collection, a 3D model of the structure is first created by using laser scanners. Based on the model, geometric properties are extracted to generate way points necessary for navigating the UAV to take images of the structure. Then, our next step is to stick together those obtained images from the overlapped field of view. The resulting image is then clustered by histogram analysis and peak detection. Potential cracks are finally identified by using locally adaptive thresholds. The whole process is automatically carried out so that the inspection time is significantly improved while safety hazards can be minimised. The conventional manual inspection process conducted by human experts is gradually being superseded by automated solutions, leveraging machine learning and deep learning algorithms to enhance efficiency and accuracy. The ability of these algorithms to discern patterns and make predictions based on extensive datasets has revolutionized the domain of pavement distress identification. The paper investigates the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for data collection, offering unique advantages such as aerial perspectives and efficient coverage of large areas. By capturing high-resolution images, UAVs provide valuable data that can be processed using deep learning algorithms to detect and classify various pavement distresses effectively. While the primary focus is on 2D image processing, the paper also acknowledges the challenges associated with 3D images, such as sensor limitations and computational requirements. Understanding these challenges is crucial for further advancements in the field.     Machine learning algorithms for monitoring pavement performance

    ABSTRACT: This work introduces the need to develop competitive, low-cost and applicable technologies to real roads to detect the asphalt condition by means of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Specifically, the most recent studies are described according to the data collection methods: images, ground penetrating radar (GPR), laser and optic fiber. The main models that are presented for such state-of-the-art studies are Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, NaĂŻve Bayes, Artificial neural networks or Convolutional Neural Networks. For these analyses, the methodology, type of problem, data source, computational resources, discussion and future research are highlighted. Open data sources, programming frameworks, model comparisons and data collection technologies are illustrated to allow the research community to initiate future investigation. There is indeed research on ML-based pavement evaluation but there is not a widely used applicability by pavement management entities yet, so it is mandatory to work on the refinement of models and data collection methods

    Pavement surface condition rating is an essential part of road infrastructure maintenance and asset management, and it is performed manually by the data analyst. The manual rating requires cognitive skills built through training and experience, which is quantitatively challenging and timeconsuming. This paper first analyses the complexity of the current manual visual rating system. This paper then investigates the suitability and robustness of a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier to automate the pavement surface condition index (PSCI) system used to rate pavement surfaces in Ireland. The dataset contains 3735 images of flexible asphalt pavements from Irish urban and rural environments taken from a video camera mounted in front of a van. The PSCI ratings were applied by experts using a scale of 1-10 to indicate surface conditions. The classification models are evaluated for different input pre-processing variations, image size, learning techniques, and the number of classes. Using 10 PSCI classes, the best classifier achieved a precision of 57% and a recall of 58%. Adjacent combination of classes (e.g., ratings 1 and 2 combined into a single class) to form a 5-class problem produced a classifier with a precision of 70% and recall of 77%. Given the complexity of the problem, classification using CNN holds promise as a first step towards an automated ranking system

    Leveraging AI to assess inequities in pavement maintenance and rehabilitation strategies

    Pavement maintenance and repair (M&R) is an important social need that should be accessible to all regardless of social or economic circumstances. In this project, pavement condition is analyzed through the use of machine learning algorithms and then compared to the socioeconomic factors of the surrounding communities. This analysis is crucial for assessing inequities that disadvantaged communities often face, especially pertinent toward pavement M&R policies. In addition to the goal of determining equity, a secondary goal of this project was to develop a methodology that can be repeated across any city. Utilizing an image-set provided by Google Street-View's API and census data of Kansas City, Missouri, a comparative analysis was conducted to determine whether equity between advantaged and disadvantaged groups was present. To aid in pavement distress identification, YOLOv5 (You only look once), a popular deep learning algorithm, was used to identify seven unique pavement distresses across Kansas City Road segments. The resulting methods were able to demonstrate a comparison between pavement conditions and socioeconomic metrics, demonstrating a trend indicating road segments in disadvantaged communities show slightly worse conditions. The strongest correlative factor borne out of analysis shows that median household income demonstrates the greatest gap between advantaged and disadvantaged census blocks.Includes bibliographical references

    Exploiting low-cost 3D imagery for the purposes of detecting and analyzing pavement distresses

    Road pavement conditions have significant impacts on safety, travel times, costs, and environmental effects. It is the responsibility of road agencies to ensure these conditions are kept in an acceptable state. To this end, agencies are tasked with implementing pavement management systems (PMSs) which effectively allocate resources towards maintenance and rehabilitation. These systems, however, require accurate data. Currently, most agencies rely on manual distress surveys and as a result, there is significant research into quick and low-cost pavement distress identification methods. Recent proposals have included the use of structure-from-motion techniques based on datasets from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cameras, producing accurate 3D models and associated point clouds. The challenge with these datasets is then identifying and describing distresses. This paper focuses on utilizing images of pavement distresses in the city of Palermo, Italy produced by mobile phone cameras. The work aims at assessing the accuracy of using mobile phones for these surveys and also identifying strategies to segment generated 3D imagery by considering the use of algorithms for 3D Image segmentation to detect shapes from point clouds to enable measurement of physical parameters and severity assessment. Case studies are considered for pavement distresses defined by the measurement of the area affected such as different types of cracking and depressions. The use of mobile phones and the identification of these patterns on the 3D models provide further steps towards low-cost data acquisition and analysis for a PMS
