    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Computation for Design and Optimization Program, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 68-69).Prevailing Parallel Linear Algebra software block cyclically distributes data across its processors for good load balancing and communication between its nodes. The block cyclic distribution schema characterized by cyclic order allocation of row and column data blocks followed by consecutive elimination is widely used in scientific computing and is the default approach in ScaLA-PACK. The fact that we are not familiar with any software outside of linear algebra that has considered cyclic distributions for their execution presents incompatibility. This calls for possible change in approach as advanced computing platforms like Star-P are emerging allowing for interoperability of algorithms. This work demonstrates a data parallel column block cyclic elimination technique for LU and QR factorization. This technique yields good load balance and communication between nodes, and also eliminates superfluous overheads. The algorithms are implemented with consecutive allocation and cyclic elimination using the high level platform, Star-P. Block update tenders extensive performance enhancement making use of Basic Linear Algebra Subroutine-3 for delivering tremendous speedup. This project also provides an overview of threading in parallel systems through implementation of important task parallel algorithms: prefix, hexadecimal Pi digits and Monte-Carlo simulation.by Harish Peruvamba Sundaresh.S.M

    dissertationAs the base of the software stack, system-level software is expected to provide ecient and scalable storage, communication, security and resource management functionalities. However, there are many computationally expensive functionalities at the system level, such as encryption, packet inspection, and error correction. All of these require substantial computing power. What's more, today's application workloads have entered gigabyte and terabyte scales, which demand even more computing power. To solve the rapidly increased computing power demand at the system level, this dissertation proposes using parallel graphics pro- cessing units (GPUs) in system software. GPUs excel at parallel computing, and also have a much faster development trend in parallel performance than central processing units (CPUs). However, system-level software has been originally designed to be latency-oriented. GPUs are designed for long-running computation and large-scale data processing, which are throughput-oriented. Such mismatch makes it dicult to t the system-level software with the GPUs. This dissertation presents generic principles of system-level GPU computing developed during the process of creating our two general frameworks for integrating GPU computing in storage and network packet processing. The principles are generic design techniques and abstractions to deal with common system-level GPU computing challenges. Those principles have been evaluated in concrete cases including storage and network packet processing applications that have been augmented with GPU computing. The signicant performance improvement found in the evaluation shows the eectiveness and eciency of the proposed techniques and abstractions. This dissertation also presents a literature survey of the relatively young system-level GPU computing area, to introduce the state of the art in both applications and techniques, and also their future potentials

    Parallel Processes in HPX: Designing an Infrastructure for Adaptive Resource Management

    Advancement in cutting edge technologies have enabled better energy efficiency as well as scaling computational power for the latest High Performance Computing(HPC) systems. However, complexity, due to hybrid architectures as well as emerging classes of applications, have shown poor computational scalability using conventional execution models. Thus alternative means of computation, that addresses the bottlenecks in computation, is warranted. More precisely, dynamic adaptive resource management feature, both from systems as well as application\u27s perspective, is essential for better computational scalability and efficiency. This research presents and expands the notion of Parallel Processes as a placeholder for procedure definitions, targeted at one or more synchronous domains, meta data for computation and resource management as well as infrastructure for dynamic policy deployment. In addition to this, the research presents additional guidelines for a framework for resource management in HPX runtime system. Further, this research also lists design principles for scalability of Active Global Address Space (AGAS), a necessary feature for Parallel Processes. Also, to verify the usefulness of Parallel Processes, a preliminary performance evaluation of different task scheduling policies is carried out using two different applications. The applications used are: Unbalanced Tree Search, a reference dynamic graph application, implemented by this research in HPX and MiniGhost, a reference stencil based application using bulk synchronous parallel model. The results show that different scheduling policies provide better performance for different classes of applications; and for the same application class, in certain instances, one policy fared better than the others, while vice versa in other instances, hence supporting the hypothesis of the need of dynamic adaptive resource management infrastructure, for deploying different policies and task granularities, for scalable distributed computing

    Efficiently and Transparently Maintaining High SIMD Occupancy in the Presence of Wavefront Irregularity

    Demand is increasing for high throughput processing of irregular streaming applications; examples of such applications from scientific and engineering domains include biological sequence alignment, network packet filtering, automated face detection, and big graph algorithms. With wide SIMD, lightweight threads, and low-cost thread-context switching, wide-SIMD architectures such as GPUs allow considerable flexibility in the way application work is assigned to threads. However, irregular applications are challenging to map efficiently onto wide SIMD because data-dependent filtering or replication of items creates an unpredictable data wavefront of items ready for further processing. Straightforward implementations of irregular applications on a wide-SIMD architecture are prone to load imbalance and reduced occupancy, while more sophisticated implementations require advanced use of parallel GPU operations to redistribute work efficiently among threads. This dissertation will present strategies for addressing the performance challenges of wavefront- irregular applications on wide-SIMD architectures. These strategies are embodied in a developer framework called Mercator that (1) allows developers to map irregular applications onto GPUs ac- cording to the streaming paradigm while abstracting from low-level data movement and (2) includes generalized techniques for transparently overcoming the obstacles to high throughput presented by wavefront-irregular applications on a GPU. Mercator forms the centerpiece of this dissertation, and we present its motivation, performance model, implementation, and extensions in this work

    Autonomously Reconfigurable Artificial Neural Network on a Chip

    Artificial neural network (ANN), an established bio-inspired computing paradigm, has proved very effective in a variety of real-world problems and particularly useful for various emerging biomedical applications using specialized ANN hardware. Unfortunately, these ANN-based systems are increasingly vulnerable to both transient and permanent faults due to unrelenting advances in CMOS technology scaling, which sometimes can be catastrophic. The considerable resource and energy consumption and the lack of dynamic adaptability make conventional fault-tolerant techniques unsuitable for future portable medical solutions. Inspired by the self-healing and self-recovery mechanisms of human nervous system, this research seeks to address reliability issues of ANN-based hardware by proposing an Autonomously Reconfigurable Artificial Neural Network (ARANN) architectural framework. Leveraging the homogeneous structural characteristics of neural networks, ARANN is capable of adapting its structures and operations, both algorithmically and microarchitecturally, to react to unexpected neuron failures. Specifically, we propose three key techniques --- Distributed ANN, Decoupled Virtual-to-Physical Neuron Mapping, and Dual-Layer Synchronization --- to achieve cost-effective structural adaptation and ensure accurate system recovery. Moreover, an ARANN-enabled self-optimizing workflow is presented to adaptively explore a "Pareto-optimal" neural network structure for a given application, on the fly. Implemented and demonstrated on a Virtex-5 FPGA, ARANN can cover and adapt 93% chip area (neurons) with less than 1% chip overhead and O(n) reconfiguration latency. A detailed performance analysis has been completed based on various recovery scenarios

    Cross-Layer Automated Hardware Design for Accuracy-Configurable Approximate Computing

    Approximate Computing trades off computation accuracy against performance or energy efficiency. It is a design paradigm that arose in the last decade as an answer to diminishing returns from Dennard\u27s scaling and a shift in the prominent workloads. A range of modern workloads, categorized mainly as recognition, mining, and synthesis, features an inherent tolerance to approximations. Their characteristics, such as redundancies in their input data and robust-to-noise algorithms, allow them to produce outputs of acceptable quality, despite an approximation in some of their computations. Approximate Computing leverages the application tolerance by relaxing the exactness in computation towards primary design goals of increasing performance or improving energy efficiency. Existing techniques span across the abstraction layers of computer systems where cross-layer techniques are shown to offer a larger design space and yield higher savings. Currently, the majority of the existing work aims at meeting a single accuracy. The extent of approximation tolerance, however, significantly varies with a change in input characteristics and applications. In this dissertation, methods and implementations are presented for cross-layer and automated design of accuracy-configurable Approximate Computing to maximally exploit the performance and energy benefits. In particular, this dissertation addresses the following challenges and introduces novel contributions: A main Approximate Computing category in hardware is to scale either voltage or frequency beyond the safe limits for power or performance benefits, respectively. The rationale is that timing errors would be gradual and for an initial range tolerable. This scaling enables a fine-grain accuracy-configurability by varying the timing error occurrence. However, conventional synthesis tools aim at meeting a single delay for all paths within the circuit. Subsequently, with voltage or frequency scaling, either all paths succeed, or a large number of paths fail simultaneously, with a steep increase in error rate and magnitude. This dissertation presents an automated method for minimizing path delays by individually constraining the primary outputs of combinational circuits. As a result, it reduces the number of failing paths and makes the timing errors significantly more gradual, and also rarer and smaller on average. Additionally, it reveals that delays can be significantly reduced towards the least significant bit (LSB) and allows operating at a higher frequency when small operands are computed. Precision scaling, i.e., reducing the representation of data and its accuracy is widely used in multiple abstraction layers in Approximate Computing. Reducing data precision also reduces the transistor toggles, and therefore the dynamic power consumption. Application and architecture level precision scaling results in using only LSBs of the circuit. Arithmetic circuits often have less complexity and logic depth in LSBs compared to most significant bits (MSB). To take advantage of this circuit property, a delay-altering synthesis methodology is proposed. The method finds energy-optimal delay values under configurable precision usage and assigns them to primary outputs used for different precisions. Thereby, it enables dynamic frequency-precision scalable circuits for energy efficiency. Within the hardware architecture, it is possible to instantiate multiple units with the same functionality with different fixed approximation levels, where each block benefits from having fewer transistors and also synthesis relaxations. These blocks can be selected dynamically and thus allow to configure the accuracy during runtime. Instantiating such approximate blocks can be a lower dynamic power but higher area and leakage cost alternative to the current state-of-the-art gating mechanisms which switch off a group of paths in the circuit to reduce the toggling activity. Jointly, instantiating multiple blocks and gating mechanisms produce a large design space of accuracy-configurable hardware, where energy-optimal solutions require a cross-layer search in architecture and circuit levels. To that end, an approximate hardware synthesis methodology is proposed with joint optimizations in architecture and circuit for dynamic accuracy scaling, and thereby it enables energy vs. area trade-offs

    Optimisation massivement multi-tâche sur grappes de calcul hétérogènes – Application aux problèmes de permutation

    Branch-and-Bound (B&B) is a frequently used tree-search exploratory method for the exact resolution of combinatorial optimization problems (COPs). However, in practice, only small problem instances can be solved on a sequential computer, as B&B generates often generates a huge amount of subproblems to be evaluated. In order to solve large COPs, we revisit the design and implementation of massively parallel B&B on top of large heterogeneous clusters, integrating multi-core CPUs, many-core processors and GPUs.For the efficient storage and management of subproblems an original data structure (IVM) dedicated to permutation problems is used. Because of the highly irregular and unpredictable shape of the B&B tree, dynamic load balancing between parallel exploration processes is one of the main issues addressed in this thesis. Based on a compact encoding of the search space in the form of intervals, work stealing strategies for multi-core and GPU are proposed, as well as hierarchical approaches for load balancing in distributed memory multi-CPU/multi-GPU systems. Three permutation problems, the Flowshop Scheduling Problem (FSP), the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) and the n-Queens puzzle problem are used as test-cases.The resolution, in 9 hours, of a FSP instance with an estimated sequential execution time of 22 years demonstrates the scalability of the proposed algorithms on a cluster composed of 36 GPUs.L'algorithme Branch-and-Bound (B&B) est une méthode de recherche arborescente fréquemment utilisé pour la résolution exacte de problèmes d'optimisation combinatoire (POC). Néanmoins, seules des petites instances peuvent être effectivement résolues sur une machine séquentielle, le nombre de sous-problèmes à évaluer étant souvent très grand. Visant la resolution de POC de grande taille, nous réexaminons la conception et l'implémentation d'algorithmes B&B massivement parallèles sur de larges plateformes hétérogènes de calcul, intégrant des processeurs multi-coeurs, many-cores et et processeurs graphiques (GPUs). Pour une représentation compacte en mémoire des sous-problèmes une structure de données originale (IVM), dédiée aux problèmes de permutation est utilisée. En raison de la forte irrégularité de l'arbre de recherche, l'équilibrage de charge dynamique entre processus d'exploration parallèles occupe une place centrale dans cette thèse. Basés sur un encodage compact de l'espace de recherche sous forme d'intervalles, des stratégies de vol de tâches sont proposées pour processeurs multi-core et GPU, ainsi une approche hiérarchique pour l'équilibrage de charge dans les systèmes multi-GPU et multi-CPU à mémoire distribuée. Trois problèmes d'optimisation définis sur l'ensemble des permutations, le problème d'ordonnancement Flow-Shop (FSP), d'affectation quadratique (QAP) et le problème des n-dames sont utilisés comme cas d'étude. La resolution en 9 heures d'une instance du FSP dont le temps de résolution séquentiel est estimé à 22 ans demontre la capacité de passage à l'échelle des algorithmes proposés sur une grappe de calcul composé de 36 GPUs
