    Determining size and structure of a company’s workforce is one of the most challenging tasks in human resource planning, especially when considering a long-term planning horizon with varying demand. In this paper an approach for integrated staffing and scheduling in a strategic long-term context is presented by applying evolutionary bilevel optimization. For demonstration, the example of determining the number of employees in different categories over the period of one year in a midsized call center of a utility is used. In doing so, two contrary objectives were optimized simultaneously: reduce the overall workforce costs and retain a high scheduling quality. The results show that the proposed approach could be used to support corporate decision making related to strategic workforce planning, not only for call centers but for any other kind of workforce planning involving personnel scheduling

The aim is to conduct an in-depth analysis on their performance on this very constrained scheduling problem. In particular, we want to identify genetic operators that could help to minimise the violation of customer/workers preferences. We also develop two cost-based genetic operators tailored to the WSRP. A Steady State Genetic Algorithm (SSGA) is used in the study and experiments are conducted on a set of problem instances from a real-world Home Health Care scenario (HHC). The experimental analysis allows us to better understand how we can more effectively employ genetic operators to tackle WSRPs

    Improved Adaptive Harmony Search algorithm for the resource levelling problem with minimal lags

    The resource leveling problem (RLP) aims to provide the most efficient resource consumption as well as minimize the resource fluctuations without increasing the prescribed makespan of the construction project. Resource fluctuations are impractical, inefficient and costly when they happen on construction sites. Therefore, previous research has tried to find an efficient way to solve this problem. Metaheuristics using Harmony Search seem to be faster and more efficient than others, but present the same problem of premature convergence closing around local optimums. In order to diminish this issue, this study introduces an innovative Improved and Adaptive Harmony Search (IAHS) algorithm to improve the solution of the RLP with multiple resources. This IAHS algorithm has been tested with the standard Project Scheduling Problem Library for four metrics that provide different levelled profiles from rectangular to bell shapes. The results have been compared with the benchmarks available in the literature presenting a complete discussion of results. Additionally, a case study of 71 construction activities contemplating the widest possible set of conditions including continuity and discontinuity of flow relationships has been solved as example of application for real life construction projects. Finally, a visualizer tool has been developed to compare the effects of applying different metrics with an app for Excel. The IAHS algorithm is faster with better overall results than other metaheuristics. Results also show that the IAHS algorithm is especially fitted for the Sum of Squares Optimization metric. The proposed IAHS algorithm for the RLP is a starting point in order to develop user-friendly and practical computer applications to provide realistic, fast and good solutions for construction project managers.This research was partially supported by the FAPA program of Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia (code P14.246922.005/01). Given the complexity and specific features of the corresponding optimization model, the Ant Colony Optimization metaheuristic was applied as the solution method.     Mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line balancing problem: A flexible agent-based ant colony optimization approach

Two-sided assembly lines are utilized to assemble large-sized products (e.g., cars, buses, trucks). Locating two lines in parallel helps improve line efficiency by enabling collaboration between the line workers. This paper proposes a mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line system that can be utilized to produce large-sized items in an inter-mixed sequence. The mixed-model parallel two-sided line balancing problem is defined and the advantages of utilizing multi-line stations across the lines are discussed. A flexible agent-based ant colony optimization algorithm is developed to solve the problem and a numerical example is given to explain the method systematically. The proposed algorithm builds flexible balancing solutions suitable for any model sequence launched. The dynamically changing workloads of workstations (based on specific product models during the production process) are also explored. A comprehensive experimental study is conducted and the results are statistically analyzed using the well-known paired sample t-test. The test results indicate that the mixed-model parallel two-sided assembly line system reduces the workforce need in comparison with separately balanced mixed-model two-sided lines. It is also shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the tabu search algorithm and six heuristics often used in the assembly line balancing domain

    MILP model for the planning of a computerized numerical control lathes machining plant

    This work introduces the formulation and application of a MILP model to solve the problem of planning the weekly production of a machining plant using numerical control lathes to manufacture spare parts for agricultural machines. The machining plant works under a Flexible Job Shop system and it has reduced workforce with different skills to operate the various high-complexity lathes and to carry out setup operations in each machine. The developed model is based on a basic formulation for the classic problem and we introduce some flexible adjustment for the various situations that may arise from different scheduling problems.     Metaheuristics For Solving Real World Employee Rostering and Shift Scheduling Problems

    Optimising resources and making considerate decisions are central concerns in any responsible organisation aiming to succeed in efficiently achieving their goals. Careful use of resources can have positive outcomes in the form of fiscal savings, improved service levels, better quality products, improved awareness of diminishing returns and general output efficiency, regardless of field. Operational research techniques are advanced analytical tools used to improve managerial decision-making. There have been a variety of case studies where operational research techniques have been successfully applied to save millions of pounds. Operational research techniques have been successfully applied to a multitude of fields, including agriculture, policing, defence, conservation, air traffic control, and many more. In particular, management of resources in the form of employees is a challenging problem --- but one with the potential for huge improvements in efficiency. The problem this thesis tackles can be divided into two sub-problems; the personalised shift scheduling & employee rostering problem, and the roster pattern problem. The personalised shift scheduling & employee rostering problem involves the direct scheduling of employees to hours and days of week. This allows the creation of schedules which are tailored to individuals and allows a fine level over control over the results, but with at the cost of a large and challenging search space. The roster pattern problem instead takes existing patterns employees currently work, and uses these as a pool of potential schedules to be used. This reduces the search space but minimises the number of changes to existing employee schedules, which is preferable for personnel satisfaction. Existing research has shown that a variety of algorithms suit different problems and hybrid methods are found to typically outperform standalone ones in real-world contexts. Several algorithmic approaches for solving variations of the employee scheduling problem are considered in this thesis. Initially a VNS approach was used with a Metropolis-Hastings acceptance criterion. The second approach utilises ER&SR controlled by the EMCAC, which has only been used in the field of exam timetabling, and has not before been used within the domain of employee scheduling and rostering. ER&SR was then hybridised with our initial approach, producing ER&SR with VNS. Finally, ER&SR was hybridised into a matheuristic with Integer Programming and compared to the hybrid's individual components. A contribution of this thesis is evidence that the algorithm ER&SR has merit outside of the original sub-field of exam scheduling, and can be applied to shift scheduling and employee rostering. Further, ER&SR was hybridised and schedules produced by the hybridisations were found to be of higher quality than the standalone algorithm. In the literature review it was found that hybrid algorithms have become more popular in real-world problems in recent years, and this body of work has explored and continued this trend. Problem formulations in this thesis provide insight into creating constraints which satisfy the need for minimising employee dissatisfaction, particularly in regards to abrupt change. The research presented in this thesis has positively impacted a multinational and multibillion dollar field service operations company. This has been achieved by implementing a variety of techniques, including metaheuristics and a matheuristic, to schedule shifts and roster employees over a period of several months. This thesis showcases the research outputs by this project, and highlights the real-world impact of this research

    Modelling human network behaviour using simulation and optimization tools: the need for hybridization

    The inclusion of stakeholder behaviour in Operations Research / Industrial Engineering (OR/IE) models has gained much attention in recent years. Behavioural and cognitive traits of people and groups have been integrated in simulation models (mainly through agent-based approaches) as well as in optimization algorithms. However, especially the influence of relations between different actors in human networks is a broad and interdisciplinary topic that has not yet been fully investigated. This paper analyses, from an OR/IE point of view, the existing literature on behaviour-related factors in human networks. This review covers different application fields, including: supply chain management, public policies in emergency situations, and Internet-based human networks. The review reveals that the methodological approach of choice (either simulation or optimization) is highly dependent on the application area. However, an integrated approach combining simulation and optimization is rarely used. Thus, the paper proposes the hybridization of simulation with optimization as one of the best strategies to incorporate human behaviour in human networks and the resulting uncertainty, randomness, and dynamism in related OR/IE models.Peer Reviewe
