    Mobile Communication Networks and Digital Television Broadcasting Systems in the Same Frequency Bands – Advanced Co-Existence Scenarios

    The increasing demand for wireless multimedia services provided by modern communication systems with stable services is a key feature of advanced markets. On the other hand, these systems can many times operate in a neighboring or in the same frequency bands. Therefore, numerous unwanted co-existence scenarios can occur. The aim of this paper is to summarize our results which were achieved during exploration and measurement of the co-existences between still used and upcoming mobile networks (from GSM to LTE) and digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DVB) systems. For all of these measurements and their evaluation universal measurement testbed has been proposed and used. Results presented in this paper are a significant part of our activities in work package WP5 in the ENIAC JU project “Agile RF Transceivers and Front-Ends for Future Smart Multi-Standard Communications Applications (ARTEMOS)”

    The scientific problematic of this PhD is centered on the usage of Visible LightCommunications (VLC) in automotive applications. By enabling wireless communication amongvehicles and also with the traffic infrastructure, the safety and efficiency of the transportation canbe substantially increased. Considering the numerous advantages of the VLC technologyencouraged the study of its appropriateness for the envisioned automotive applications, as analternative and/or a complement for the traditional radio frequency based communications.In order to conduct this research, a low-cost VLC system for automotive application wasdeveloped. The proposed system aims to ensure a highly robust communication between a LEDbasedVLC emitter and an on-vehicle VLC receiver. For the study of vehicle to vehicle (V2V)communication, the emitter was developed based on a vehicle backlight whereas for the study ofinfrastructure to vehicle (I2V) communication, the emitter was developed based on a traffic light.Considering the VLC receiver, a central problem in this area is the design of a suitable sensorable to enhance the conditioning of the signal and to avoid disturbances due to the environmentalconditions, issues that are addressed in the thesis. The performances of a cooperative drivingsystem integrating the two components were evaluated as well.The experimental validation of the VLC system was performed in various conditions andscenarios. The results confirmed the performances of the proposed system and demonstrated thatVLC can be a viable technology for the considered applications. Furthermore, the results areencouraging towards the continuations of the work in this domain.La problématique scientifique de cette thèse est centrée sur le développement decommunications par lumière visible (Visible Light Communications - VLC) dans lesapplications automobiles. En permettant la communication sans fil entre les véhicules, ou entreles véhicules et l’infrastructure routière, la sécurité et l'efficacité du transport peuvent êtreconsidérablement améliorées. Compte tenu des nombreux avantages de la technologie VLC,cette solution se présente comme une excellente alternative ou un complément pour lescommunications actuelles plutôt basées sur les technologies radio-fréquences traditionnelles.Pour réaliser ces travaux de recherche, un système VLC à faible coût pour applicationautomobile a été développé. Le système proposé vise à assurer une communication très robusteentre un émetteur VLC à base de LED et un récepteur VLC monté sur un véhicule. Pour l'étudedes communications véhicule à véhicule (V2V), l'émetteur a été développé sur la base d’un pharearrière rouge de voiture, tandis que pour l'étude des communications de l'infrastructure auvéhicule (I2V), l'émetteur a été développé sur la base d'un feu de circulation. Considérant lerécepteur VLC, le problème principal réside autour d’un capteur approprié, en mesured'améliorer le conditionnement du signal et de limiter les perturbations dues des conditionsenvironnementales. Ces différents points sont abordés dans la thèse, d’un point de vue simulationmais également réalisation du prototype.La validation expérimentale du système VLC a été réalisée dans différentes conditions etscénarii.     Optimal channel assignment and power control in wireless cellular networks

    Wireless mobile communication is a fast growing field in current telecommunication industry. In a wireless cellular network, channel assignment is a mechanism that assigns channels to mobile users in order to establish a communication between a mobile terminal and a base station. It is important to determine an optimal allocation of channels that makes effective use of channels and minimizes call-blocking and call-dropping probabilities. Another important issue, the power control, is a problem of determining an optimal allocation of power levels to transmitters such that the power consumption is minimized while signal quality is maintained. In wireless mobile networks, channels and transmitter powers are limited resources. Therefore, efficient utilization of both those resources can significantly increase the capacity of network. In this thesis, we solve such optimizations by the hybrid channel assignment (HCA) method using integer linear programming (ILP). Two novel sets of ILP formulation are proposed for two different cases: Reuse Distance based HCA without power control, and Carrier-to-Interference Ratio based HCA combined with power control. For each of them, our experimental results show an improvement over other several approaches

    Recent year\u27s incredible success and exponential growth of wireless cellular network services have necessitated careful management of radio resources to improve system capacity. Mainly due to the insufficiency of radio spectrum, reuse or sharing of radio frequency must be considered. In practical, the sharing of radio frequency introduces interferences among users, which in turn limit the system capacity. On the other hand, control of transmitter power can suppress co-channel interference, adjacent channel interference and limits the consumption of power. Thus channel assignment and power control are two effective means in wireless cellular networks and they are highly correlated to each other. Most of the existing papers have focused on optimizing the assignment of channels assuming that the allocation of transmitter power is known and fixed or vice-versa. In this thesis, we study the integration of channel assignment and power control simultaneously to increase the network capacity and throughput. We have proposed a new channel assignment approach, called HCA-PC (Hybrid Channel Assignment + Power Control) using dynamic reuse distance concept to optimize the channel assignment. We develop a Hill-climbing approach with random restart strategy, using an efficient problem representation and a fitness function that optimizes channel assignment and power control in the cellular network.     Interference in vehicle-to-vehicle communication networks - analysis, modeling, simulation and assessment

Due to the limited communication resources the question raises how much data each node may provide such that the quality of service required by applications can still be guaranteed under realistic interference conditions.
