Local search: A guide for the information retrieval practitioner
There are a number of combinatorial optimisation problems in information retrieval in which the use of local search methods are worthwhile. The purpose of this paper is to show how local search can be used to solve some well known tasks in information retrieval (IR), how previous research in the field is piecemeal, bereft of a structure and methodologically flawed, and to suggest more rigorous ways of applying local search methods to solve IR problems. We provide a query based taxonomy for analysing the use of local search in IR tasks and an overview of issues such as fitness functions, statistical significance and test collections when conducting experiments on combinatorial optimisation problems. The paper gives a guide on the pitfalls and problems for IR practitioners who wish to use local search to solve their research issues, and gives practical advice on the use of such methods. The query based taxonomy is a novel structure which can be used by the IR practitioner in order to examine the use of local search in IR
Application of a new multi-agent Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation methodology in ship design
In this paper, a multiple objective 'Hybrid Co-evolution based Particle Swarm Optimisation' methodology (HCPSO) is proposed. This methodology is able to handle multiple objective optimisation problems in the area of ship design, where the simultaneous optimisation of several conflicting objectives is considered. The proposed method is a hybrid technique that merges the features of co-evolution and Nash equilibrium with a ε-disturbance technique to eliminate the stagnation. The method also offers a way to identify an efficient set of Pareto (conflicting) designs and to select a preferred solution amongst these designs. The combination of co-evolution approach and Nash-optima contributes to HCPSO by utilising faster search and evolution characteristics. The design search is performed within a multi-agent design framework to facilitate distributed synchronous cooperation. The most widely used test functions from the formal literature of multiple objectives optimisation are utilised to test the HCPSO. In addition, a real case study, the internal subdivision problem of a ROPAX vessel, is provided to exemplify the applicability of the developed method
Learning to Rank Academic Experts in the DBLP Dataset
Expert finding is an information retrieval task that is concerned with the
search for the most knowledgeable people with respect to a specific topic, and
the search is based on documents that describe people's activities. The task
involves taking a user query as input and returning a list of people who are
sorted by their level of expertise with respect to the user query. Despite
recent interest in the area, the current state-of-the-art techniques lack in
principled approaches for optimally combining different sources of evidence.
This article proposes two frameworks for combining multiple estimators of
expertise. These estimators are derived from textual contents, from
graph-structure of the citation patterns for the community of experts, and from
profile information about the experts. More specifically, this article explores
the use of supervised learning to rank methods, as well as rank aggregation
approaches, for combing all of the estimators of expertise. Several supervised
learning algorithms, which are representative of the pointwise, pairwise and
listwise approaches, were tested, and various state-of-the-art data fusion
techniques were also explored for the rank aggregation framework. Experiments
that were performed on a dataset of academic publications from the Computer

Real-Time RGB-D Camera Pose Estimation in Novel Scenes using a Relocalisation Cascade
Camera pose estimation is an important problem in computer vision. Common
techniques either match the current image against keyframes with known poses,
directly regress the pose, or establish correspondences between keypoints in
the image and points in the scene to estimate the pose. In recent years,
regression forests have become a popular alternative to establish such
correspondences. They achieve accurate results, but have traditionally needed
to be trained offline on the target scene, preventing relocalisation in new
environments. Recently, we showed how to circumvent this limitation by adapting
a pre-trained forest to a new scene on the fly. The adapted forests achieved
relocalisation performance that was on par with that of offline forests, and
our approach was able to estimate the camera pose in close to real time. In
this paper, we present an extension of this work that achieves significantly
better relocalisation performance whilst running fully in real time. To achieve
this, we make several changes to the original approach: (i) instead of
accepting the camera pose hypothesis without question, we make it possible to
score the final few hypotheses using a geometric approach and select the most
promising; (ii) we chain several instantiations of our relocaliser together in
a cascade, allowing us to try faster but less accurate relocalisation first,
only falling back to slower, more accurate relocalisation as necessary; and
(iii) we tune the parameters of our cascade to achieve effective overall
performance. These changes allow us to significantly improve upon the
performance our original state-of-the-art method was able to achieve on the
well-known 7-Scenes and Stanford 4 Scenes benchmarks. As additional
contributions, we present a way of visualising the internal behaviour of our
forests and show how to entirely circumvent the need to pre-train a forest on a

Ordered Preference Elicitation Strategies for Supporting Multi-Objective Decision Making
In multi-objective decision planning and learning, much attention is paid to
producing optimal solution sets that contain an optimal policy for every
possible user preference profile. We argue that the step that follows, i.e,
determining which policy to execute by maximising the user's intrinsic utility
function over this (possibly infinite) set, is under-studied. This paper aims
to fill this gap. We build on previous work on Gaussian processes and pairwise
comparisons for preference modelling, extend it to the multi-objective decision
support scenario, and propose new ordered preference elicitation strategies
based on ranking and clustering. Our main contribution is an in-depth
evaluation of these strategies using computer and human-based experiments. We
show that our proposed elicitation strategies outperform the currently used
pairwise methods, and found that users prefer ranking most. Our experiments
further show that utilising monotonicity information in GPs by using a linear
prior mean at the start and virtual comparisons to the nadir and ideal points,
increases performance. We demonstrate our decision support framework in a

Population extremal optimisation for discrete multi-objective optimisation problems
The power to solve intractable optimisation problems is often found through population based evolutionary methods. These include, but are not limited to, genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution and ant colony optimisation. While showing much promise as an effective optimiser, extremal optimisation uses only a single solution in its canonical form – and there are no standard population mechanics. In this paper, two population models for extremal optimisation are proposed and applied to a multi-objective version of the generalised assignment problem. These models use novel intervention/interaction strategies as well as collective memory in order to allow individual population members to work together. Additionally, a general non-dominated local search algorithm is developed and tested. Overall, the results show that improved attainment surfaces can be produced using population based interactions over not using them. Pairwise meta-rules for better meta-learning-based algorithm ranking
In this paper, we present a novel meta-feature generation method in the context of meta-learning, which is based on rules that compare the performance of individual base learners in a one-against-one manner. In addition to these new meta-features, we also introduce a new meta-learner called Approximate Ranking Tree Forests (ART Forests) that performs very competitively when compared with several state-of-the-art meta-learners. Our experimental results are based on a large collection of datasets and show that the proposed new techniques can improve the overall performance of meta-learning for algorithm ranking significantly. A key point in our approach is that each performance figure of any base learner for any specific dataset is generated by optimising the parameters of the base learner separately for each dataset
