    Online Mixed Packing and Covering

    In many problems, the inputs arrive over time, and must be dealt with irrevocably when they arrive. Such problems are online problems. A common method of solving online problems is to first solve the corresponding linear program, and then round the fractional solution online to obtain an integral solution. We give algorithms for solving linear programs with mixed packing and covering constraints online. We first consider mixed packing and covering linear programs, where packing constraints are given offline and covering constraints are received online. The objective is to minimize the maximum multiplicative factor by which any packing constraint is violated, while satisfying the covering constraints. No prior sublinear competitive algorithms are known for this problem. We give the first such --- a polylogarithmic-competitive algorithm for solving mixed packing and covering linear programs online. We also show a nearly tight lower bound. Our techniques for the upper bound use an exponential penalty function in conjunction with multiplicative updates. While exponential penalty functions are used previously to solve linear programs offline approximately, offline algorithms know the constraints beforehand and can optimize greedily. In contrast, when constraints arrive online, updates need to be more complex. We apply our techniques to solve two online fixed-charge problems with congestion. These problems are motivated by applications in machine scheduling and facility location. The linear program for these problems is more complicated than mixed packing and covering, and presents unique challenges. We show that our techniques combined with a randomized rounding procedure give polylogarithmic-competitive integral solutions. These problems generalize online set-cover, for which there is a polylogarithmic lower bound. Hence, our results are close to tight

    We consider a generic online allocation problem that generalizes the classical online set cover framework by considering requests comprising a set of elements rather than a single element. This problem has multiple applications in cloud computing, crowd sourcing, facility planning, etc. Formally, it is an online covering problem where each online step comprises an offline covering problem. In addition, the covering sets are capacitated, leading to packing constraints. We give a randomized algorithm for this problem that has a nearly tight competitive ratio in both objectives: overall cost and maximum capacity violation. Our main technical tool is an online algorithm for packing/covering LPs with nested constraints, which may be of interest in other applications as well

    Online set packing and competitive scheduling of multi-part tasks

    We consider a scenario where large data frames are broken into a few packets and transmitted over the network. Our focus is on a bottleneck router: the model assumes that in each time step, a set of packets (a burst) arrives, from which only one packet can be served, and all other packets are lost. A data frame is considered useful only if none of its constituent packets is lost, and otherwise it is worthless. We abstract the problem as a new type of online set packing, present a randomized distributed algorithm and a matching lower bound on the competitive ratio for any randomized online algorithm. Our bounds are expressed in terms of the maximal burst size and the maximal number of packets per frame. We also present refined bounds that depend on the uniformity of these parameters

    An online packing heuristic for the three-dimensional container loading problem in dynamic environments and the Physical Internet

    In this paper, we consider the online three-dimensional container loading problem. We develop a novel online packing algorithm to solve the three-dimensional bin packing problem in the online case where items are not know well in advance and they have to be packed in real-time when they ar-rive. This is relevant in many real-world scenarios such as automated cargo loading in warehouses. This is also relevant in the new logistics model of Physical Internet. The effectiveness of the online packing heuristic is evalu-ated on a set of generated data. The experimental results show that the algo-rithm could solve the 3D container loading problems in online fashion and is competitive against other algorithms both in the terms of running time, space utilization and number of bins

    Locality-preserving allocations Problems and coloured Bin Packing

    We study the following problem, introduced by Chung et al. in 2006. We are given, online or offline, a set of coloured items of different sizes, and wish to pack them into bins of equal size so that we use few bins in total (at most α\alpha times optimal), and that the items of each colour span few bins (at most β\beta times optimal). We call such allocations (α,β)(\alpha, \beta)-approximate. As usual in bin packing problems, we allow additive constants and consider (α,β)(\alpha,\beta) as the asymptotic performance ratios. We prove that for \eps>0, if we desire small α\alpha, no scheme can beat (1+\eps, \Omega(1/\eps))-approximate allocations and similarly as we desire small β\beta, no scheme can beat (1.69103, 1+\eps)-approximate allocations. We give offline schemes that come very close to achieving these lower bounds. For the online case, we prove that no scheme can even achieve (O(1),O(1))(O(1),O(1))-approximate allocations. However, a small restriction on item sizes permits a simple online scheme that computes (2+\eps, 1.7)-approximate allocations

    Improved Online Algorithms for Knapsack and GAP in the Random Order Model

    The knapsack problem is one of the classical problems in combinatorial optimization: Given a set of items, each specified by its size and profit, the goal is to find a maximum profit packing into a knapsack of bounded capacity. In the online setting, items are revealed one by one and the decision, if the current item is packed or discarded forever, must be done immediately and irrevocably upon arrival. We study the online variant in the random order model where the input sequence is a uniform random permutation of the item set. We develop a randomized (1/6.65)-competitive algorithm for this problem, outperforming the current best algorithm of competitive ratio 1/8.06 [Kesselheim et al. SIAM J. Comp. 47(5)]. Our algorithm is based on two new insights: We introduce a novel algorithmic approach that employs two given algorithms, optimized for restricted item classes, sequentially on the input sequence. In addition, we study and exploit the relationship of the knapsack problem to the 2-secretary problem. The generalized assignment problem (GAP) includes, besides the knapsack problem, several important problems related to scheduling and matching. We show that in the same online setting, applying the proposed sequential approach yields a (1/6.99)-competitive randomized algorithm for GAP. Again, our proposed algorithm outperforms the current best result of competitive ratio 1/8.06 [Kesselheim et al. SIAM J. Comp. 47(5)]
