APMEC: An Automated Provisioning Framework for Multi-access Edge Computing
Novel use cases and verticals such as connected cars and human-robot
cooperation in the areas of 5G and Tactile Internet can significantly benefit
from the flexibility and reduced latency provided by Network Function
Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). Existing frameworks
managing and orchestrating MEC and NFV are either tightly coupled or completely
separated. The former design is inflexible and increases the complexity of one
framework. Whereas, the latter leads to inefficient use of computation
resources because information are not shared. We introduce APMEC, a dedicated
framework for MEC while enabling the collaboration with the management and
orchestration (MANO) frameworks for NFV. The new design allows to reuse
allocated network services, thus maximizing resource utilization. Measurement
results have shown that APMEC can allocate up to 60% more number of network
services. Being developed on top of OpenStack, APMEC is an open source project,
available for collaboration and facilitating further research activities
Internet of robotic things : converging sensing/actuating, hypoconnectivity, artificial intelligence and IoT Platforms
The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration, new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating, their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent “devices”, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew “cognitive devices” are becoming active participants in IoT applications. This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies, architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications

A Vision of Self-Evolving Network Management for Future Intelligent Vertical HetNet
Future integrated terrestrial-aerial-satellite networks will have to exhibit
some unprecedented characteristics for the provision of both communications and
computation services, and security for a tremendous number of devices with very
broad and demanding requirements in an almost-ubiquitous manner. Although 3GPP
introduced the concept of self-organization networks (SONs) in 4G and 5G
documents to automate network management, even this progressive concept will
face several challenges as it may not be sufficiently agile in coping with the
immense levels of complexity, heterogeneity, and mobility in the envisioned
beyond-5G integrated networks. In the presented vision, we discuss how future
integrated networks can be intelligently and autonomously managed to
efficiently utilize resources, reduce operational costs, and achieve the
targeted Quality of Experience (QoE). We introduce the novel concept of
self-evolving networks (SENs) framework, which utilizes artificial
intelligence, enabled by machine learning (ML) algorithms, to make future
integrated networks fully intelligent and automated with respect to the
provision, adaptation, optimization, and management aspects of networking,
communications, and computation. To envisage the concept of SEN in future
integrated networks, we use the Intelligent Vertical Heterogeneous Network
(I-VHetNet) architecture as our reference. The paper discusses five prominent
communications and computation scenarios where SEN plays the main role in
providing automated network management. Numerical results provide an insight on
how the SEN framework improves the performance of future integrated networks.
The paper presents the leading enablers and examines the challenges associated
with the application of SEN concept in future integrated networks
A Methodology and Simulation-Based Toolchain for Estimating Deployment Performance of Smart Collective Services at the Edge
Research trends are pushing artificial intelligence (AI) across the Internet of Things (IoT)-edge-fog-cloud continuum to enable effective data analytics, decision making, as well as the efficient use of resources for QoS targets. Approaches for collective adaptive systems (CASs) engineering, such as aggregate computing, provide declarative programming models and tools for dealing with the uncertainty and the complexity that may arise from scale, heterogeneity, and dynamicity. Crucially, aggregate computing architecture allows for 'pulverization': applications can be decomposed into many deployable micromodules that can be spread across the ICT infrastructure, thus allowing multiple potential deployment configurations for the same application logic. This article studies the deployment architecture of aggregate-based edge services and its implications in terms of performance and cost. The goal is to provide methodological guidelines and a model-based toolchain for the generation and simulation-based evaluation of potential deployments. First, we address this subject methodologically by proposing an approach based on deployment code generators and a simulation phase whose obtained solutions are assessed with respect to their performance and costs. We then tailor this approach to aggregate computing applications deployed onto an IoT-edge-fog-cloud infrastructure, and we develop a corresponding toolchain based on Protelis and EdgeCloudSim. Finally, we evaluate the approach and tools through a case study of edge multimedia streaming, where the edge ecosystem exhibits intelligence by self-organizing into clusters to promote load balancing in large-scale dynamic settings
Populations Experiencing Homelessness: Diverse Barriers to Employment and How to Address Them
People experience homelessness for many reasons including financial insecurity, a lack of affordable housing, and difficulty accessing services such as medical care. Effective employment programs take special care when serving individuals facing these barriers. This best practice brief outlines the common employment barriers for these populations and provides considerations for tailoring employment services and prioritizing supportive services to best meet their needs
Medical Image Segmentation with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks
Medical imaging is the technique and process of creating visual representations of the body of a patient for clinical analysis and medical intervention. Healthcare professionals rely heavily on medical images and image documentation for proper diagnosis and treatment. However, manual interpretation and analysis of medical images are time-consuming, and inaccurate when the interpreter is not well-trained. Fully automatic segmentation of the region of interest from medical images has been researched for years to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of understanding such images. With the advance of deep learning, various neural network models have gained great success in semantic segmentation and sparked research interests in medical image segmentation using deep learning. We propose three convolutional frameworks to segment tissues from different types of medical images. Comprehensive experiments and analyses are conducted on various segmentation neural networks to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods. Furthermore, datasets built for training our networks and full implementations are published
Algorithms for advance bandwidth reservation in media production networks
Media production generally requires many geographically distributed actors (e.g., production houses, broadcasters, advertisers) to exchange huge amounts of raw video and audio data. Traditional distribution techniques, such as dedicated point-to-point optical links, are highly inefficient in terms of installation time and cost. To improve efficiency, shared media production networks that connect all involved actors over a large geographical area, are currently being deployed. The traffic in such networks is often predictable, as the timing and bandwidth requirements of data transfers are generally known hours or even days in advance. As such, the use of advance bandwidth reservation (AR) can greatly increase resource utilization and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the bandwidth scheduling problem, which takes into account the specific characteristics of media production networks, is presented. Two novel optimization algorithms based on this model are thoroughly evaluated and compared by means of in-depth simulation results
