Sanal topoloji tasarımı, verilen bir trafik matrisine göre bir grup ışık yolunun kurulması olarak tanımlanabilir. Trafikte meydana gelecek bir değişiklik yeniden konfigürasyon kararının alınmasına neden olabilir. Sanal topoloji yeniden konfigürasyonu, hem yeni sanal topolojinin belirlenmesini hem de bu yeni topolojiye geçişi içermektedir. Bu tez çalışmasında IP/WDM ağlarda sanal topoloji yeniden konfigürasyonunun IP paket trafiği üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında, çeşitli yeniden kofigürasyon algoritmaları gerçeklenmiş ve Fishnet tabanlı bir IP simülatörü üzerinde test edilmiştir. Gerçeklenen sanal topoloji tasarım algoritmalarına ait paket gecikmeleri/kayıpları incelenmiş ve algoritmaların başarımları karşılaştırılmıştır.Today, both the amount of people accessing communication networks and new communication applications which require high data transfer rates are exponentially increasing. Growing traffic demands triggered the design of optical communication networks which will be able to provide larger bandwidth utilization. A lightpath, which can span multiple fiber links, provides communication channels over the underlying optical communication infrastructure. Virtual Topology Design (VTD) means establishment of a set of lightpaths under a given traffic pattern. A change in traffic pattern may trigger reconfiguration decision. Virtual Topology Reconfiguration (VTR) contains determination of a new virtual topology and migration between the old and new virtual topologies. In this thesis, the effects of virtual topology reconfiguration on Internet Protocol (IP) packet traffic on IP over WDM networks were studied. Various reconfiguration algorithms were implemented and tested on a Fishnet based IP simulator.     QoS Routing of VoIP using a Modified Widest-Shortest Routing Algorithm

    Implementation of current real time services (of which one of the more important is Voice over IP) on the current Internet face many obstacles, among them the issue of routing. Quality of service (QoS) routing, attempts to provide real time services with the required guarantees to achieve acceptable performance. In this paper we study VoIP routing using the Quality of Service (QSR) network simulator utilizing the Widest-Shortest routing algorithm to provide QoS using different metrics. We show that this algorithm using a modified cost metric based on the hop-normalized is able to route real time traffic away from congested links thus providing acceptable jitter, end-to-end delay and throughput to satisfy real time services requirements

    Aspects of proactive traffic engineering in IP networks

    To deliver a reliable communication service over the Internet it is essential for the network operator to manage the traffic situation in the network. The traffic situation is controlled by the routing function which determines what path traffic follows from source to destination. Current practices for setting routing parameters in IP networks are designed to be simple to manage. This can lead to congestion in parts of the network while other parts of the network are far from fully utilized. In this thesis we explore issues related to optimization of the routing function to balance load in the network and efficiently deliver a reliable communication service to the users. The optimization takes into account not only the traffic situation under normal operational conditions, but also traffic situations that appear under a wide variety of circumstances deviating from the nominal case. In order to balance load in the network knowledge of the traffic situations is needed. Consequently, in this thesis we investigate methods for efficient derivation of the traffic situation. The derivation is based on estimation of traffic demands from link load measurements. The advantage of using link load measurements is that they are easily obtained and consist of a limited amount of data that need to be processed. We evaluate and demonstrate how estimation based on link counts gives the operator a fast and accurate description of the traffic demands. For the evaluation we have access to a unique data set of complete traffic demands from an operational IP backbone. However, to honor service level agreements at all times the variability of the traffic needs to be accounted for in the load balancing. In addition, optimization techniques are often sensitive to errors and variations in input data. Hence, when an optimized routing setting is subjected to real traffic demands in the network, performance often deviate from what can be anticipated from the optimization. Thus, we identify and model different traffic uncertainties and describe how the routing setting can be optimized, not only for a nominal case, but for a wide range of different traffic situations that might appear in the network. Our results can be applied in MPLS enabled networks as well as in networks using link state routing protocols such as the widely used OSPF and IS-IS protocols. Only minor changes may be needed in current networks to implement our algorithms. The contributions of this thesis is that we: demonstrate that it is possible to estimate the traffic matrix with acceptable precision, and we develop methods and models for common traffic uncertainties to account for these uncertainties in the optimization of the routing configuration. In addition, we identify important properties in the structure of the traffic to successfully balance uncertain and varying traffic demands

    IP and ATM integration: A New paradigm in multi-service internetworking

    ATM is a widespread technology adopted by many to support advanced data communication, in particular efficient Internet services provision. The expected challenges of multimedia communication together with the increasing massive utilization of IP-based applications urgently require redesign of networking solutions in terms of both new functionalities and enhanced performance. However, the networking context is affected by so many changes, and to some extent chaotic growth, that any approach based on a structured and complex top-down architecture is unlikely to be applicable. Instead, an approach based on finding out the best match between realistic service requirements and the pragmatic, intelligent use of technical opportunities made available by the product market seems more appropriate. By following this approach, innovations and improvements can be introduced at different times, not necessarily complying with each other according to a coherent overall design. With the aim of pursuing feasible innovations in the different networking aspects, we look at both IP and ATM internetworking in order to investigating a few of the most crucial topics/ issues related to the IP and ATM integration perspective. This research would also address various means of internetworking the Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with an objective of identifying the best possible means of delivering Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for multi-service applications, exploiting the meritorious features that IP and ATM have to offer. Although IP and ATM often have been viewed as competitors, their complementary strengths and limitations from a natural alliance that combines the best aspects of both the technologies. For instance, one limitation of ATM networks has been the relatively large gap between the speed of the network paths and the control operations needed to configure those data paths to meet changing user needs. IP\u27s greatest strength, on the other hand, is the inherent flexibility and its capacity to adapt rapidly to changing conditions. These complementary strengths and limitations make it natural to combine IP with ATM to obtain the best that each has to offer. Over time many models and architectures have evolved for IP/ATM internetworking and they have impacted the fundamental thinking in internetworking IP and ATM. These technologies, architectures, models and implementations will be reviewed in greater detail in addressing possible issues in integrating these architectures s in a multi-service, enterprise network. The objective being to make recommendations as to the best means of interworking the two in exploiting the salient features of one another to provide a faster, reliable, scalable, robust, QoS aware network in the most economical manner. How IP will be carried over ATM when a commercial worldwide ATM network is deployed is not addressed and the details of such a network still remain in a state of flux to specify anything concrete. Our research findings culminated with a strong recommendation that the best model to adopt, in light of the impending integrated service requirements of future multi-service environments, is an ATM core with IP at the edges to realize the best of both technologies in delivering QoS guarantees in a seamless manner to any node in the enterprise

    Multi-layer traffic engineering in optical networks under physical layer impairments

D.) -- Bilkent University, 2010.Includes bibliographical references leaves 153-165.We study Traffic Engineering (TE) in Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)/Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks and propose a multi-layer TE method. MPLS provides powerful TE features for IP networks and is widely deployed in backbone networks. WDM can increase the transmission capacity of optical fibers to tremendous amounts, therefore it has been the dominant multiplexing technology used in the optical layer. The proposed multi-layer TE solution facilitates efficient use of network resources where the TE mechanisms in the MPLS and WDM layers coordinate. We consider a static WDM layer and available traffic expectation information. The TE problem arising in the considered scenario is the Virtual Topology Design (VTD) problem, which involves the decision of WDM lightpaths to be established, calculation of MPLS Label Switched Paths (LSPs) on the resulting virtual topology, and calculation of the routes and wavelengths in the physical topology that correspond to the lightpaths in the virtual topology. We assume a daily traffic pattern changing with the time of day and aim to design a static virtual topology that satisfies as much of the offered traffic as possible, over the whole day. In our proposed solution, the multi-layer VTD problem is solved by decomposing it into two sub-problems, each involving in a single layer. The decomposition approach is used in the thesis due to the huge computational burden of the combined solution for real-life networks. The sub-problem in the MPLS layer is the design of the lightpath topology and calculation of the LSP routes on this virtual topology. This problem is known to be NP-complete and finding its optimum solution is possible only for small networks. We propose a Tabu Search based heuristic method to solve two versions of this problem, resource oriented and performance oriented. Integer Linear Programming (ILP) relaxations are also developed for obtaining upper and lower bounds. We show that the gap between the produced solutions and the lower and upper bounds are around 10% and 7% for the resource and performance oriented problems, respectively. Since the actual traffic can show deviations from the expected values, we also developed an MPLS layer online TE method to compensate the instantaneous fluctuations of the traffic flows. In the proposed method, the LSPs are rerouted dynamically using a specially designed cost function. Our numerical studies show that using the designed cost function results in much lower blockings than using commonly used Widest Shortest Path First and Available Shortest Path First approaches in the literature. The corresponding sub-problem of the multi-layer VTD problem in the WDM layer is the Static Lightpath Establishment (SLE) problem. Along with the capacity and wavelength continuity constraints, we also consider the Bit Error Rate (BER) constraints due to physical layer impairments such as attenuation, polarization mode dispersion and switch crosstalk. This problem is NP-complete even without the BER constraints. We propose a heuristic solution method and develop an exact ILP formulation to evaluate the performance of the proposed method for small problem sizes. Our proposed method produces solutions close to the optimum solutions for the cases in which the ILP formulation could be solved to optimality. Then, these solution methods for the single layer sub-problems are combined in a multi-layer TE scheme to solve the VTD problem in both layers jointly. The proposed TE scheme considers the physical layer limitations and optical impairments. This TE scheme can be applied by keeping each layer’s information hidden from the other layer, but our simulations show that it can produce more effective and efficient solutions when the physical layer topology information is shared with the MPLS layer. We also investigate the effect of non-uniform optical components in terms of impairment characteristics. The numerical results show that more traffic can be routed when all the components in the network have moderate impairment characteristics, compared to the case in which some components have better and some have worse impairment characteristics.Şengezer, NamıkPh.D

    ENERGY EFFICIENT WIRED NETWORKING

    This research proposes a new dynamic energy management framework for a backbone Internet Protocol over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (IP over DWDM) network. Maintaining the logical IP-layer topology is a key constraint of our architecture whilst saving energy by infrastructure sleeping and virtual router migration. The traffic demand in a Tier 2/3 network typically has a regular diurnal pattern based on people‟s activities, which is high in working hours and much lighter during hours associated with sleep. When the traffic demand is light, virtual router instances can be consolidated to a smaller set of physical platforms and the unneeded physical platforms can be put to sleep to save energy. As the traffic demand increases the sleeping physical platforms can be re-awoken in order to host virtual router instances and so maintain quality of service. Since the IP-layer topology remains unchanged throughout virtual router migration in our framework, there is no network disruption or discontinuities when the physical platforms enter or leave hibernation. However, this migration places extra demands on the optical layer as additional connections are needed to preserve the logical IP-layer topology whilst forwarding traffic to the new virtual router location. Consequently, dynamic optical connection management is needed for the new framework. Two important issues are considered in the framework, i.e. when to trigger the virtual router migration and where to move virtual router instances to? For the first issue, a reactive mechanism is used to trigger the virtual router migration by monitoring the network state. Then, a new evolutionary-based algorithm called VRM_MOEA is proposed for solving the destination physical platform selection problem, which chooses the appropriate location of virtual router instances as traffic demand varies. A novel hybrid simulation platform is developed to measure the performance of new framework, which is able to capture the functionality of the optical layer, the IP layer data-path and the IP/optical control plane. Simulation results show that the performance of network energy saving depends on many factors, such as network topology, quiet and busy thresholds, and traffic load; however, savings of around 30% are possible with typical medium-sized network topologies

    Intelligent Network Infrastructures: New Functional Perspectives on Leveraging Future Internet Services

    The Internet experience of the 21st century is by far very different from that of the early '80s. The Internet has adapted itself to become what it really is today, a very successful business platform of global scale. As every highly successful technology, the Internet has suffered from a natural process of ossification. Over the last 30 years, the technical solutions adopted to leverage emerging applications can be divided in two categories. First, the addition of new functionalities either patching existing protocols or adding new upper layers. Second, accommodating traffic grow with higher bandwidth links. Unfortunately, this approach is not suitable to provide the proper ground for a wide gamma of new applications. To be deployed, these future Internet applications require from the network layer advanced capabilities that the TCP/IP stack and its derived protocols can not provide by design in a robust, scalable fashion. NGNs (Next Generation Networks) on top of intelligent telecommunication infrastructures are being envisioned to support future Internet Services. This thesis contributes with three proposals to achieve this ambitious goal. The first proposal presents a preliminary architecture to allow NGNs to seamlessly request advanced services from layer 1 transport networks, such as QoS guaranteed point-to-multipoint circuits. This architecture is based on virtualization techniques applied to layer 1 networks, and hides from NGNs all complexities of interdomain provisioning. Moreover, the economic aspects involved were also considered, making the architecture attractive to carriers. The second contribution regards a framework to develop DiffServ-MPLS capable networks based exclusively on open source software and commodity PCs. The developed DiffServ-MPLS flexible software router was designed to allow NGN prototyping, that make use of pseudo virtual circuits and assured QoS as a starting point of development. The third proposal presents a state of the art routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for photonic networks. This algorithm considers physical layer impairments to 100% guarantee the requested QoS profile, even in case of single network failures. A number of novel techniques were applied to offer lower blocking probability when compared with recent proposed algorithms, without impacting on setup delay time

    PhD ThesisIn today's digital era, cartography has changed its role, from that of a pure visual model of the Earth's surface, to an interface to other spatial and aspatial information. Along with this, representationa nd manipulation of graphical information in three-dimensional space is required for many applications. Problems and difficulties must be overcome in order to facilitate the move to three-dimensional models, multimedia, and distributed data. Can accurate measurements, at sufficient resolution, and using affordable resources be obtained? Will application software usefully process, in all aspects, models of the real world, sounds, and videos? Combined with this, the workplace is becoming distributed, requiring applications and data that can be used across the globe as easily as in the office. A distributed, three-dimensional, GIS is required with all the procedural and recording functionality of current two-dimensional systems. Such a GIS would maintain a model, typically comprised of solids of individual buildings, roads, utilities etc. with both external and internal detail, represented on a suitable digital terrain model. This research examines virtual reality software as part of an answer. Alternatively, can technologies such as HTML, VRML, and scripting, along with object-orientation and open systems, allow for the display and interrogation of networked data sets? The particular application of this technology, considered during this research, is the need for accurate reconstruction of historical urban monuments. The construction, manipulation, and exploration of these models is often referred to as virtual heritage. This research constructs an innovative and resource effective methodology, the Phoenix algorithm, which requires only a single image for creating three-dimensional models of buildings at large scale. The development of this algorithm is discussed and the results obtained from it are compared with those obtained using traditional three-dimensional capture techniques. Furthermore, possible solutions to the earlier questions are given and discussed
