    A Decoupled 3D Facial Shape Model by Adversarial Training

    Data-driven generative 3D face models are used to compactly encode facial shape data into meaningful parametric representations. A desirable property of these models is their ability to effectively decouple natural sources of variation, in particular identity and expression. While factorized representations have been proposed for that purpose, they are still limited in the variability they can capture and may present modeling artifacts when applied to tasks such as expression transfer. In this work, we explore a new direction with Generative Adversarial Networks and show that they contribute to better face modeling performances, especially in decoupling natural factors, while also achieving more diverse samples. To train the model we introduce a novel architecture that combines a 3D generator with a 2D discriminator that leverages conventional CNNs, where the two components are bridged by a geometry mapping layer. We further present a training scheme, based on auxiliary classifiers, to explicitly disentangle identity and expression attributes. Through quantitative and qualitative results on standard face datasets, we illustrate the benefits of our model and demonstrate that it outperforms competing state of the art methods in terms of decoupling and diversity.Comment: camera-ready version for ICCV'1

    Splicing of concurrent upper-body motion spaces with locomotion

    In this paper, we present a motion splicing technique for generating concurrent upper-body actions occurring simultaneously with the evolution of a lower-body locomotion sequence. Specifically, we show that a layered interpolation motion model generates upper-body poses while assigning different actions to each upper-body part. Hence, in the proposed motion splicing approach, it is possible to increase the number of generated motions as well as the number of desired actions that can be performed by virtual characters. Additionally, we propose an iterative motion blending solution, inverse pseudo-blending, to maintain a smooth and natural interaction between the virtual character and the virtual environment; inverse pseudo-blending is a constraint-based motion editing technique that blends the motions enclosed in a tetrahedron by minimising the distances between the end-effector positions of the actual and blended motions. Additionally, to evaluate the proposed solution, we implemented an example-based application for interactive motion splicing based on specified constraints. Finally, the generated results show that the proposed solution can be beneficially applied to interactive applications where concurrent actions of the upper-body are desired

    Real Time Animation of Virtual Humans: A Trade-off Between Naturalness and Control

    Virtual humans are employed in many interactive applications using 3D virtual environments, including (serious) games. The motion of such virtual humans should look realistic (or ‘natural’) and allow interaction with the surroundings and other (virtual) humans. Current animation techniques differ in the trade-off they offer between motion naturalness and the control that can be exerted over the motion. We show mechanisms to parametrize, combine (on different body parts) and concatenate motions generated by different animation techniques. We discuss several aspects of motion naturalness and show how it can be evaluated. We conclude by showing the promise of combinations of different animation paradigms to enhance both naturalness and control

    Multi - objective sliding mode control of active magnetic bearing system

    Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system is known to inherit many nonlinearity effects due to its rotor dynamic motion and the electromagnetic actuators which make the system highly nonlinear, coupled and open-loop unstable. The major nonlinearities that are associated with AMB system are gyroscopic effect, rotor mass imbalance and nonlinear electromagnetics in which the gyroscopics and imbalance are dependent to the rotational speed of the rotor. In order to provide satisfactory system performance for a wide range of system condition, active control is thus essential. The main concern of the thesis is the modeling of the nonlinear AMB system and synthesizing a robust control method based on Sliding Mode Control (SMC) technique such that the system can achieve robust performance under various system nonlinearities. The model of the AMB system is developed based on the integration of the rotor and electromagnetic dynamics which forms nonlinear time varying state equations that represent a reasonably close description of the actual system. Based on the known bound of the system parameters and state variables, the model is restructured to become a class of uncertain system by using a deterministic approach. In formulating the control algorithm to control the system, SMC theory is adapted which involves the formulation of the sliding surface and the control law such that the state trajectories are driven to the stable sliding manifold. The surface design involves the transformation of the system into a special canonical representation such that the sliding motion can be characterized by a convex representation of the desired system performances. Optimal Linear Quadratic (LQ) characteristics and regional pole-clustering of the closed-loop poles are designed to be the objectives to be fulfilled in the surface design where the formulation is represented as a set of Linear Matrix Inequality optimization problem. For the control law design, a new continuous SMC controller is proposed in which asymptotic convergence of the system’s state trajectories in finite time is guaranteed. This is achieved by adapting the equivalent control approach with the exponential decaying boundary layer technique. The newly designed sliding surface and control law form the complete Multi-objective SMC (MO-SMC) and the proposed algorithm is applied into the nonlinear AMB in which the results show that robust system performance is achieved for various system conditions. The findings also demonstrate that the MO-SMC gives better system response than the reported ideal SMC (I-SMC) and continuous SMC (C-SMC)

    The Penn Jerboa: A Platform for Exploring Parallel Composition of Templates

    We have built a 12DOF, passive-compliant legged, tailed biped actuated by four brushless DC motors. We anticipate that this machine will achieve varied modes of quasistatic and dynamic balance, enabling a broad range of locomotion tasks including sitting, standing, walking, hopping, running, turning, leaping, and more. Achieving this diversity of behavior with a single under-actuated body, requires a correspondingly diverse array of controllers, motivating our interest in compositional techniques that promote mixing and reuse of a relatively few base constituents to achieve a combinatorially growing array of available choices. Here we report on the development of one important example of such a behavioral programming method, the construction of a novel monopedal sagittal plane hopping gait through parallel composition of four decoupled 1DOF base controllers. For this example behavior, the legs are locked in phase and the body is fastened to a boom to restrict motion to the sagittal plane. The platform's locomotion is powered by the hip motor that adjusts leg touchdown angle in flight and balance in stance, along with a tail motor that adjusts body shape in flight and drives energy into the passive leg shank spring during stance. The motor control signals arise from the application in parallel of four simple, completely decoupled 1DOF feedback laws that provably stabilize in isolation four corresponding 1DOF abstract reference plants. Each of these abstract 1DOF closed loop dynamics represents some simple but crucial specific component of the locomotion task at hand. We present a partial proof of correctness for this parallel composition of template reference systems along with data from the physical platform suggesting these templates are anchored as evidenced by the correspondence of their characteristic motions with a suitably transformed image of traces from the physical platform.Comment: Technical Report to Accompany: A.     H∞ Control of Nonlinear Systems: A Class of Controllers

    The standard state space solutions to the H∞ control problem for linear time invariant systems are generalized to nonlinear time-invariant systems. A class of nonlinear H∞-controllers are parameterized as nonlinear fractional transformations on contractive, stable free nonlinear parameters. As in the linear case, the H∞ control problem is solved by its reduction to four simpler special state space problems, together with a separation argument. Another byproduct of this approach is that the sufficient conditions for H∞ control problem to be solved are also derived with this machinery. The solvability for nonlinear H∞-control problem requires positive definite solutions to two parallel decoupled Hamilton-Jacobi inequalities and these two solutions satisfy an additional coupling condition. An illustrative example, which deals with a passive plant, is given at the end

Furthermore, it explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework.
