    Robust Low-Cost Multiple Antenna Processing for V2V Communication

    Cooperative V2V communication with frequent, periodic broadcast of messages between vehicles is a key enabler of applications that increase traffic safety and traffic efficiency on roads. Such broadcast V2V communication requires an antenna system with omnidirectional coverage, which is difficult to achieve using a single antenna element. For a mounted, omnidirectional antenna on a vehicle is distorted by the vehicle body, and exhibits a nonuniform directional pattern with low gain in certain directions. The thesis addresses this problem by developing schemes that employ multiple antennas (MAs) to achieve an effective radiation pattern with omnidirectional characteristics at both the transmit- and the receive-side. To ensure robust communication, the MA schemes are designed to minimize the burst error probability of several consecutive status messages in a scarce multipath environment with a dominant path between vehicles.First, at the receive-side, we develop a hybrid analog-digital antenna combiner. The analog part of the combiner is composed of low-cost analog combining networks (ACNs) of phase shifters that do not depend on channel stateinformation (CSI), while the digital part uses maximal ratio combining. We show that the optimal phase slopes of the analog part of the combiner (i.e., the phase slopes that minimize the burst error probability) are the same found under the optimization of a single ACN, which was done in earlier work. We then show how directional antennas can be employed in this context to achieve an effective omnidirectional radiation pattern of the antenna system that is robust in all directions of arrival of received signals.Secondly, at the transmit-side, we develop two low-cost analog MA schemes, an analog beamforming network (ABN) of phase shifters, and an antenna switching network (ASN), for the case when receivers employ the ACN or the hybrid combiner. Both schemes are shown to achieve an effective radiation pattern with improved omnidirectional characteristics at the transmit-side without relying on CSI.Thirdly, the schemes above were developed assuming that all vehicles broadcast their messages with the same fixed period. Therefore, we tackle the practical scenario when different vehicles use different and potentially varying broadcast periods. We show that the phase slopes of the MA schemes at the receiver and/or transmitter can be designed to support multiple broadcast periods.\ua0Lastly, the optimal phase slopes of the MA schemes were analytically derived under a worst-case propagation corresponding to a dominant path with an angle of departure, and an angle of arrival that are approximately non-varying over the time it takes to transmit and receive several packets. We relax this assumption and study the system performance under a time-varying dominant component instead. We derive a design rule that yields robust phase slopes that effectively mitigate the losses due to the time-variation of the dominant path

    VANET Applications Under Loss Scenarios & Evolving Wireless Technology

    In this work we study the impact of wireless network impairment on the performance of VANET applications such as Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), and other VANET applications that periodically broadcast messages. We also study the future of VANET application in light of the evolution of radio access technologies (RAT) that are used to exchange messages. Previous work in the literature proposed fallback strategies that utilizes on-board sensors to recover in case of wireless network impairment, those methods assume a fixed time headway value, and do not achieve string stability. In this work, we study the string stability of a one-vehicle look-ahead CACC platoon under different network loss scenarios, and propose to adapt the time headway parameter of the model according to a network reliability metric that we defined based on packet burst loss length to maximize traffic flow efficiency while maintaining a string stable platoon. Our findings show that careful adjustment of headway value according to the wireless network reliability allows the platoon to maintain string stable operation while maximizing traffic flow. We also study the impact that evolving wireless technology can have on VANET applications such as CACC, where we study the performance when using DSRC and 5G NR V2X. In addition, we study the evolution of RATs used in VANET application, and we propose DSRC+, as a possible enhancement to traditional DSRC, that utilizes modern modulation/coding schemes and performs random blind retransmission to improve packet delivery ratio. We finally study the trade-offs in the choice of RAT in VANET applications such as CACC, concluding that RATs with time-division channel access can be reliable with lower packet loss, but performs poorly when needing to disseminate messages over longer CACC platoons

    Exploring Smart Infrastructure Concepts to Improve the Reliability and Functionality of Safety Oriented Connected Vehicle Applications

    Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), a form of vehicle platooning, is a well known connected vehicle application. It extends adaptive cruise control (ACC) by incorporating vehicle-to-vehicle communications. A vehicle periodically broadcasts a small message that includes in the least a unique vehicle identifier, its current geo-location, speed, and acceleration. A vehicle might pay attention to the message stream of only the car ahead. While CACC is under intense study by the academic community, the vast majority of the relevant published literature has been limited to theoretical studies that make many simplifying assumptions. The research presented in this dissertation has been motivated by our observation that there is limited understanding of how platoons actually work under a range of realistic operating conditions. Our research includes a performance study of V2V communications based on actual V2V radios supplemented by simulation. These results are in turn applied to the analysis of CACC. In order to understand a platoon at scale, we resort to simulations and analysis using the ns3 simulator. Assessment criteria includes network reliability measures as well as application oriented measures. Network assessment involves latency and first and second order loss dynamics. CACC performance is based on stability, frequency of crashes, and the rate of traffic flow. The primary goal of CACC is to maximize traffic flow subject to a maximum allowed speed. This requires maintaining smaller inter-vehicle distances which can be problematic as a platoon can become unstable as the target headway between cars is reduced. The main contribution of this dissertation is the development and evaluation of two heuristic approaches for dynamically adapting headway both of which attempt to minimize the headway while ensure stability. We present the design and analysis of a centralized and a distributed implementation of the algorithm. Our results suggest that dynamically adapting the headway time can improve the overall platoon traffic flow without the platoon becoming unstable

    Cooperative control of autonomous connected vehicles from a Networked Control perspective: Theory and experimental validation

    Formation control of autonomous connected vehicles is one of the typical problems addressed in the general context of networked control systems. By leveraging this paradigm, a platoon composed by multiple connected and automated vehicles is represented as one-dimensional network of dynamical agents, in which each agent only uses its neighboring information to locally control its motion, while it aims to achieve certain global coordination with all other agents. Within this theoretical framework, control algorithms are traditionally designed based on an implicit assumption of unlimited bandwidth and perfect communication environments. However, in practice, wireless communication networks, enabling the cooperative driving applications, introduce unavoidable communication impairments such as transmission delay and packet losses that strongly affect the performances of cooperative driving. Moreover, in addition to this problem, wireless communication networks can suffer different security threats. The challenge in the control field is hence to design cooperative control algorithms that are robust to communication impairments and resilient to cyber attacks. The work aim is to tackle and solve these challenges by proposing different properly designed control strategies. They are validated both in analytical, numerical and experimental ways. Obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the strategies in coping with communication impairments and security vulnerabilities

    Unattended network operations technology assessment study. Technical support for defining advanced satellite systems concepts

    The results are summarized of an unattended network operations technology assessment study for the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI). The scope of the work included: (1) identified possible enhancements due to the proposed Mars communications network; (2) identified network operations on Mars; (3) performed a technology assessment of possible supporting technologies based on current and future approaches to network operations; and (4) developed a plan for the testing and development of these technologies. The most important results obtained are as follows: (1) addition of a third Mars Relay Satellite (MRS) and MRS cross link capabilities will enhance the network's fault tolerance capabilities through improved connectivity; (2) network functions can be divided into the six basic ISO network functional groups; (3) distributed artificial intelligence technologies will augment more traditional network management technologies to form the technological infrastructure of a virtually unattended network; and (4) a great effort is required to bring the current network technology levels for manned space communications up to the level needed for an automated fault tolerance Mars communications network

    Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is an emerging area of wireless ad hoc networks that facilitates ubiquitous connectivity between smart vehicles through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) or Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) and Roadside-to- Vehicle (R2V) communications. This emerging field of technology aims to improve safety of passengers and traffic flow, reduces pollution to the environment and enables in-vehicle entertainment applications. The safety-related applications could reduce accidents by providing drivers with traffic information such as collision avoidances, traffic flow alarms and road surface conditions.     Feedback Control Goes Wireless: Guaranteed Stability over Low-power Multi-hop Networks

    Closing feedback loops fast and over long distances is key to emerging applications; for example, robot motion control and swarm coordination require update intervals of tens of milliseconds. Low-power wireless technology is preferred for its low cost, small form factor, and flexibility, especially if the devices support multi-hop communication. So far, however, feedback control over wireless multi-hop networks has only been shown for update intervals on the order of seconds. This paper presents a wireless embedded system that tames imperfections impairing control performance (e.g., jitter and message loss), and a control design that exploits the essential properties of this system to provably guarantee closed-loop stability for physical processes with linear time-invariant dynamics.     Wireless HROV Control with Compressed Visual Feedback Using Acoustic and RF Links

    Underwater cooperative robotics offers the possibility to perform challenging intervention applications, such as recovering archeological objects as within the context of the MERBOTS research project, or grasping, transporting and assembly of big objects, using more than one mobile manipulator, as faced by the TWINBOT project. In order to enhance safety during the intervention, it is reasonable to avoid the umbilical, also giving more mobility to the robots, and enabling a broader set of cooperative movements. Several solutions, based on acoustic, radiofrequency (RF) or Visual Light Communication (VLC) have been proposed for underwater communications in the literature. This paper presents the architecture of an underwater wireless communication framework for the control of multiple semi-autonomous robots in cooperative interventions. The proposed framework is composed of several modules as the virtual reality interface using UWSim, the Underwater Multi-robot Cooperative Intervention Remote Control Protocol (UMCI-RCP) and a Generic Link Layer (GLL). UMCI-RCP allows the control of an underwater robot over limited communication links. UMCI-RCP integrates a progressive compression algorithm that provides visual feedback at a constant rate and ensures image reception even in channels with loses. The Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) medium access strategy minimizes the jitter of transmitted packets. The GLL has been designed in order to provide support for multimodal transmission (i.e. acoustic, RF and VLC) and also to interface with the UWSim-NET simulator so that facilitates the experimentation either with a real or with a simulated modem. The possibility of exchange real and simulated devices in the proposed framework are demonstrated by means of a teleoperation experiment with a BlueROV equipped with the S100 RF modems. Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) capabilities are demonstrated repeating the experiment with the real modems and modeling the BlueROV, and also modeling both the modems and the BlueROV
