Intentions and perceptions : the emerging gaps between web system designers and users
In recent years, organisations have been increasingly developing web systems as portals through which B2C or B2B eCommerce is conducted. Many such systems suffer from inadequacy in function, form and quality. While such deficiencies are quite commonly encountered in traditional software systems, in the case of web systems, the problems are magnified by the emerging gaps in designers\u27 intentions and the expectation of a global, and frequently grossly misunderstood, user. In this paper we therefore present an approach to investigating the gaps in perceptions between web developer’s intentions and end-users expectations and the subsequent use of web system features. Furthermore, we empirically investigated B2C web systems and determined several useful approaches to practical evaluation of the degree of cohesion between designer and user views of the system.<br /
The Derivation of a pragmatic requirements framework for web development.
Web-based development is a relatively immature area of Software Engineering, producing often complex applications to many different types of end user and stakeholders. Web Engineering as a research area, was created to introduce
processes that enable web based development to be repeatable and to avoid potential failure in the fast changing landscape that is the current ubiquitous
Internet. A survey of existing perspectives from the literature highlights a number of points. Firstly, that web development has a number of subtle differences to
Software Engineering and that many web development methods are not used. Further, that there has been little work done on what should be in a web development method. A full survey of 50 web development methods finds that they do not give enough detail to be used in their entirety; they are difficult for a non-computer scientist to understand in the techniques they use and most do not cover the lifecycle, particularly in the area of requirements, implementation and
testing. This thesis introduces a requirements framework for novice web developers. It is created following an in-depth case study carried out over two years that
investigates the use of web development methods by novice developers. The study finds that web development methods are not easy to understand, there is a lack of explanation as to how to use the techniques within the method and the language used is too complex. A high level method is derived with an iterative process and with the requirements phase in the form of a framework; it addresses the problems
that are discussed and provides excellent support for a novice web developer in the requirements phase of the lifecycle. An evaluation of the method using a group of
novice developers who reflect on the method and a group who use it for development finds that the method is both easy to understand and use
Quality aspects of Internet telephony
Internet telephony has had a tremendous impact on how people communicate.
Many now maintain contact using some form of Internet telephony.
Therefore the motivation for this work has been to address the quality aspects
of real-world Internet telephony for both fixed and wireless telecommunication.
The focus has been on the quality aspects of voice communication,
since poor quality leads often to user dissatisfaction. The scope of the work
has been broad in order to address the main factors within IP-based voice
communication.
The first four chapters of this dissertation constitute the background
material. The first chapter outlines where Internet telephony is deployed
today. It also motivates the topics and techniques used in this research.
The second chapter provides the background on Internet telephony including
signalling, speech coding and voice Internetworking. The third chapter
focuses solely on quality measures for packetised voice systems and finally
the fourth chapter is devoted to the history of voice research.
The appendix of this dissertation constitutes the research contributions.
It includes an examination of the access network, focusing on how calls are
multiplexed in wired and wireless systems. Subsequently in the wireless
case, we consider how to handover calls from 802.11 networks to the cellular
infrastructure. We then consider the Internet backbone where most of our
work is devoted to measurements specifically for Internet telephony. The
applications of these measurements have been estimating telephony arrival
processes, measuring call quality, and quantifying the trend in Internet telephony
quality over several years. We also consider the end systems, since
they are responsible for reconstructing a voice stream given loss and delay
constraints. Finally we estimate voice quality using the ITU proposal PESQ
and the packet loss process.
The main contribution of this work is a systematic examination of Internet
telephony. We describe several methods to enable adaptable solutions
for maintaining consistent voice quality. We have also found that relatively
small technical changes can lead to substantial user quality improvements.
A second contribution of this work is a suite of software tools designed to
ascertain voice quality in IP networks. Some of these tools are in use within
commercial systems today
Multi-GPU support on the marrow algorithmic skeleton framework

Engenharia InformĂĄticaWith the proliferation of general purpose GPUs, workload parallelization and datatransfer optimization became an increasing concern. The natural evolution from using a single GPU, is multiplying the amount of available processors, presenting new challenges, as tuning the workload decompositions and load balancing, when dealing with heterogeneous systems.
Higher-level programming is a very important asset in a multi-GPU environment, due to the complexity inherent to the currently used GPGPU APIs (OpenCL and CUDA), because of their low-level and code overhead. This can be obtained by introducing an abstraction layer, which has the advantage of enabling implicit optimizations and orchestrations
such as transparent load balancing mechanism and reduced explicit code overhead.
Algorithmic Skeletons, previously used in cluster environments, have recently been
adapted to the GPGPU context. Skeletons abstract most sources of code overhead, by
defining computation patterns of commonly used algorithms. The Marrow algorithmic
skeleton library is one of these, taking advantage of the abstractions to automate the
orchestration needed for an efficient GPU execution.
This thesis proposes the extension of Marrow to leverage the use of algorithmic skeletons
in the modular and efficient programming of multiple heterogeneous GPUs, within a single machine.
We were able to achieve a good balance between simplicity of the programming model and performance, obtaining good scalability when using multiple GPUs, with an efficient load distribution, although at the price of some overhead when using a single-GPU.projects PTDC/EIA-EIA/102579/2008 and PTDC/EIA-EIA/111518/200

Orchestrating the Dynamic Adaptation of Distributed Software with Process Technology
Software systems are becoming increasingly complex to develop, understand, analyze, validate, deploy, configure, manage and maintain. Much of that complexity is related to ensuring adequate quality levels to services provided by software systems after they are deployed in the field, in particular when those systems are built from and operated as a mix of proprietary and non-proprietary components. That translates to increasing costs and difficulties when trying to operate large-scale distributed software ensembles in a way that continuously guarantees satisfactory levels of service. A solution can be to exert some form of dynamic adaptation upon running software systems: dynamic adaptation can be defined as a set of automated and coordinated actions that aim at modifying the structure, behavior and performance of a target software system, at run time and without service interruption, typically in response to the occurrence of some condition(s). To achieve dynamic adaptation upon a given target software system, a set of capabilities, including monitoring, diagnostics, decision, actuation and coordination, must be put in place. This research addresses the automation of decision and coordination in the context of an end-to-end and externalized approach to dynamic adaptation, which allows to address as its targets legacy and component-based systems, as well as new systems developed from scratch. In this approach, adaptation provisions are superimposed by a separate software platform, which operates from the outside of and orthogonally to the target application as a whole; furthermore, a single adaptation possibly spans concerted interventions on a multiplicity of target components. To properly orchestrate those interventions, decentralized process technology is employed for describing, activating and coordinating the work of a cohort of software actuators, towards the intended end-to-end dynamic adaptation. The approach outlined above, has been implemented in a prototype, code-named Workflakes, within the Kinesthetics eXtreme project investigating externalized dynamic adaptation, carried out by the Programming Systems Laboratory of Columbia University, and has been employed in a set of diverse case studies. This dissertation discusses and evaluates the concept of process-based orchestration of dynamic adaptation and the Workflakes prototype on the basis of the results of those case studies

Web information systems: A study of maintenance, change and flexibility
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Information Systems (ISâs) have provided organisations with huge efficiency gains and benefits over the years; however an outstanding problem that is yet to be successfully tackled is that of the troublesome maintenance phase. Consuming vast resources and thwarting business progression in a competitive global market place, system maintenance has been recognised as one of the key areas where IS is failing organisations. Organisations are too often faced with the dilemma of either replacement or the continual upkeep of an unwieldy system. The ability for ISâs to be able to adapt to exogenous influences is even more acute today than at any time in the past. This is due to ISâs namely, Web Information Systems (WISâs) increasingly and continually having to accommodate the needs of organisations to interconnect with a plethora of additional systems as well as supporting evolving business models. The richness of the interconnectivity, functionalities and services WISâs now offer are shaping social, cultural and economic behaviour on a truly global scale, making the maintenance of such systems and evermore pertinent issue. The growth and proliferation of WISâs shows no sign of abating which leads to the conclusion that what some have termed as the âmaintenance icebergâ should not be ignored.
The quandary that commercial organisations face is typically driven by two key aspects; firstly, systems are built on the cultural premise of using fixed requirements, with not enough thought or attention being paid to systems abilities to deviate from these requirements. Secondly, systems do not generally cope well with adapting to unpredictable change arising from outside of the organisations environment. Over the recent past, different paradigms, approaches and methods have attempted to make software development more predictable, controllable and adaptable, however, the benefits of such measures in relation to the maintenance dilemma have been limited. The concept of flexible systems that are able to cope with such change in an efficient manner is currently an objective that few can claim to have realised successfully.
The primary focus of the thesis was to examine WIS post-development change in order to empirically substantiate and understand the nature of the maintenance phase. This was done with the intention to determine exactly âwhereâ and âhowâ flexibility could be targeted to address these changes. This study uses an emergent analytical approach to identify and catalogue the nature of change occurring within WIS maintenance. However, the research framework design underwent a significant revision as the initial results indicated that a greater emphasis and refocus was required to achieve the research objective. To study WISâs in an appropriate and detailed context, a single case study was conducted in a web development software house. In total the case study approach was used to collect empirical evidence from four projects that investigated post-development change requests in order to identify areas of the system susceptible to change. The maintenance phases of three WIS projects were considered in-depth, resulting in the collection of over four hundred change requests. The fourth project served as a validation case. The results are presented and the findings are used to identify key trends and characteristics that depict WIS maintenance change. The analytical information derived from the change requests is consolidated and shown diagrammatically for the key areas of change using profile models developed in this thesis. Based on the results, the thesis concludes and contributes to the ongoing debate that there is a discernable difference when considering WIS maintenance change compared to that of traditional IS maintenance. The detailed characteristics displayed in the profile models are then used to map specific flexibility criteria that ultimately are required to facilitate change. This is achieved using the Flexibility Matrix of Change (FMoC) tool which was developed within the remit of this research. This tool is a qualitative measurement scheme that aligns WIS maintenance changes to a reciprocal flexibility attribute. Thus, the wider aim of this thesis is to also expand the awareness of flexibility and its importance as a key component of the WIS lifecycle
