A Survey on the Contributions of Software-Defined Networking to Traffic Engineering
Since the appearance of OpenFlow back in 2008, software-defined networking (SDN) has gained momentum. Although there are some discrepancies between the standards developing organizations working with SDN about what SDN is and how it is defined, they all outline traffic engineering (TE) as a key application. One of the most common objectives of TE is the congestion minimization, where techniques such as traffic splitting among multiple paths or advanced reservation systems are used. In such a scenario, this manuscript surveys the role of a comprehensive list of SDN protocols in TE solutions, in order to assess how these protocols can benefit TE. The SDN protocols have been categorized using the SDN architecture proposed by the open networking foundation, which differentiates among data-controller plane interfaces, application-controller plane interfaces, and management interfaces, in order to state how the interface type in which they operate influences TE. In addition, the impact of the SDN protocols on TE has been evaluated by comparing them with the path computation element (PCE)-based architecture. The PCE-based architecture has been selected to measure the impact of SDN on TE because it is the most novel TE architecture until the date, and because it already defines a set of metrics to measure the performance of TE solutions. We conclude that using the three types of interfaces simultaneously will result in more powerful and enhanced TE solutions, since they benefit TE in complementary ways.European Commission through the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (GN4) under Grant 691567

A framework for the dynamic management of Peer-to-Peer overlays
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications have been associated with inefficient operation, interference with other network services and large operational costs for network providers. This thesis presents a framework which can help ISPs address these issues by means of intelligent management of peer behaviour. The proposed approach involves limited control of P2P overlays without interfering with the fundamental characteristics of peer autonomy and decentralised operation.
At the core of the management framework lays the Active Virtual Peer (AVP). Essentially intelligent peers operated by the network providers, the AVPs interact with the overlay from within, minimising redundant or inefficient traffic, enhancing overlay stability and facilitating the efficient and balanced use of available peer and network resources. They offer an âinsiderâsâ view of the overlay and permit the management of P2P functions in a compatible and non-intrusive manner. AVPs can support multiple P2P protocols and coordinate to perform functions collectively.
To account for the multi-faceted nature of P2P applications and allow the incorporation of modern techniques and protocols as they appear, the framework is based on a modular architecture. Core modules for overlay control and transit traffic minimisation are presented. Towards the latter, a number of suitable P2P content caching strategies are proposed.
Using a purpose-built P2P network simulator and small-scale experiments, it is demonstrated that the introduction of AVPs inside the network can significantly reduce inter-AS traffic, minimise costly multi-hop flows, increase overlay stability and load-balancing and offer improved peer transfer performance
Simple and stable dynamic traffic engineering for provider scale ethernet

Provider scale Ethernet offers further advantages, providing not only an easy to manage solution for multicast traffic, but also transparent interconnection between clientsâ LANs. These Ethernet deployments face altogether different design issues, requiring support for a significantly
higher number of hosts. This support relies on hierarquization, separating address and
virtual network spaces of customers and providers.
In addition, large scale Ethernet solutions need to grant forwarding optimality. This can be achieved using traffic engineering approaches. Traffic engineering defines the set of engineering methods and techniques used to optimize the flow of network traffic. Static traffic engineering
approaches enjoy widespread use in provider networks, but their performance is greatly penalized by sudden load variations. On the other hand, dynamic traffic engineering is tailored to adapt to load changes. However, providers are skeptical to adopt dynamic approaches as these induce problems such as routing instability, and as a result, network performance decreases.
This dissertation presents a Simple and Stable Dynamic Traffic Engineering framework
(SSD-TE), which addresses these concerns in a provider scale Ethernet scenario. The validation results show that SSD-TE achieves better or equal performance to static traffic engineering approaches, whilst remaining both stable and responsive to load variations
Congestion avoidance in overlay networks through multipath routing
Overlay networks relying on traditional multicast routing approaches use only a single path between a sender and a receiver. This path is selected based on latency, with the goal of achieving fast delivery. Content is routed through links with low latency, ignoring slower links of the network which remain unused. With the increasing size of content on the Internet, this leads to congestion, messages are dropped and have to be retransmitted.
A multicast multipath congestion-avoidance routing scheme which uses multiple bottleneck-disjoint paths between senders and receivers was developed, as was a linear programming model of the network to distribute messages intelligently across these paths according to two goals: minimum network usage and load-balancing. The former aims to use as few links as possible to perform routing, while the latter spreads messages across as many links as possible, evenly distributing the traffic. Another technique, called message splitting, was also used. This allows nodes to send a single copy of a message with multiple receivers, which will then be duplicated by a node closer to the receivers and sent along separate paths only when required.
The model considers all of the messages in the network and is a global optimisation. Nevertheless, it can be solved quickly for large networks and workloads, with the cost of routing remaining almost entirely the cost of finding multiple paths between senders and receivers. The Gurobi linear programming solver was used to find solutions to the model. This routing approach was implemented in the NS-3 network simulator. The work is presented as a messaging middleware scheme, which can be applied to any overlay messaging network.Open Acces
Handover in Mobile WiMAX Networks: The State of Art and Research Issues

Networks, using the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access (WiMAX) as the core technology based on the IEEE
802.16 family of standards, is evolving as a Fourth-Generation
(4G) technology. With the recent introduction of mobility management
frameworks in the IEEE 802.16e standard, WiMAX
is now placed in competition to the existing and forthcoming
generations of wireless technologies for providing ubiquitous
computing solutions. However, the success of a good mobility
framework largely depends on the capability of performing fast
and seamless handovers irrespective of the deployed architectural
scenario. Now that the IEEE has defined the Mobile WiMAX
(IEEE 802.16e) MAC-layer handover management framework,
the Network Working Group (NWG) of the WiMAX Forum
is working on the development of the upper layers. However,
the path to commercialization of a full-fledged WiMAX mobility
framework is full of research challenges. This article focuses on
potential handover-related research issues in the existing and
future WiMAX mobility framework. A survey of these issues in
the MAC, Network and Cross-Layer scenarios is presented along
with discussion of the different solutions to those challenges. A
comparative study of the proposed solutions, coupled with some
insights to the relevant issues, is also included
Energy Efficient Core Networks with Clouds
The popularity of cloud based applications stemming from the high volume of connected mobile devices has led to a huge increase in Internet traffic. In order to enable easy access to cloud applications, infrastructure providers have invested in geographically distributed databases and servers. However, intelligent and energy efficient high capacity transport networks with near ubiquitous connectivity are needed to adequately and sustainably serve these requirements. In this thesis, network virtualisation has been identified as a potential networking paradigm that can contribute to network agility and energy efficiency improvements in core networks with clouds.
The work first introduces a new virtual network embedding core network architecture with clouds and a compute and bandwidth resource provisioning mechanism aimed at reducing power consumption in core networks and data centres. Further, quality of service measures in compute and bandwidth resource provisioning such as delay and customer location have been investigated and their impact on energy efficiency established. Data centre location optimisation for energy efficiency in virtual network embedding infrastructure has been investigated by developing a MILP model that selects optimal data centre locations in the core network. The work also introduces an optical OFDM based physical layer in virtual network embedding to optimise power consumption and optical spectrum utilization. In addition, virtual network embedding schemes aimed at profit maximization for cloud infrastructure providers as well greenhouse gas emission reduction in cloud infrastructure networks have been investigated. GreenTouch, a consortium of industrial and academic experts on energy efficiency in ICTs, has adopted the work in this thesis as one of the measures of improving energy efficiency in core networks

An initial definition of on-board processing requirements for an advanced satellite communications system to service domestic markets in the 1990's is presented. An exemplar system architecture with both RF on-board switching and demodulation/remodulation baseband processing was used to identify important issues related to system implementation, cost, and technology development
Towards âSmarterâ Systems: Key Cyber-Physical Performance-Cost Tradeoffs in Smart Electric Vehicle Charging with Distributed Generation
The growing penetration of electric vehicles (EV) into the market is driving sharper spikes in consumer power demand. Meanwhile, growing renewable distributed generation (DG) is driving sharper spikes in localised power supply. This leads to growing temporally unsynchronised spikes in generation and consumption, which manifest as localised over- or undervoltage and disrupt grid service quality. Smart Grid solutions can respond to voltage conditions by curtailing charging EVs
or available DG through a network of cyber-enabled sensors and actuators. How to
optimise efficiency, ensure stable operation, deliver required performance outputs
and minimally overhaul existing hardware remains an open research topic.
This thesis models key performance-cost tradeoffs relating to Smart EV Charging
with DG, including architectural design challenges in the underpinning Information
and Communications Technology (ICT). Crucial deployment optimisation balancing
various Key Performance Indicators (KPI) is achieved. The contributions are as follows:
âą Two Smart EV Charging schemes are designed for secondary voltage control in the distribution network. One is optimised for the network operator, the other for consumers/generators. This is used to evaluate resulting performance implications via targeted case study.
âą To support these schemes, a multi-tier hierarchical distributed ICT architecture is designed that alleviates computation and traffic load from the central controller and achieves user fairness in the network. In this way it is scalable and adaptable to a wide range of network sizes.
âą Both schemes are modelled under practical latency constraints to derive interlocking effects on various KPIs. Multiple latency-mitigation strategies are designed in each case.
âą KPIs, including voltage control, peak shaving, user inconvenience, renewable energy input, CO2 emissions and EV & DG capacity are evaluated statistically under 172 days of power readings. This is used to establish key performancecost tradeoffs relevant to multiple invested bodies in the power grid.
âą Finally, the ICT architecture is modelled for growing network sizes. Quality-of- Service (QoS) provision is studied for various multi-tier hierarchical topologies under increasing number of end devices to gauge performance-cost tradeoffs related to demand-response latency and network deployment
