    The Perception of Globally Coherent Motion

    How do human observers perceive a coherent pattern of motion from a disparate set of local motion measures? Our research has examined how ambiguous motion signals along straight contours are spatially integrated to obtain a globally coherent perception of motion. Observers viewed displays containing a large number of apertures, with each aperture containing one or more contours whose orientations and velocities could be independently specified. The total pattern of the contour trajectories across the individual apertures was manipulated to produce globally coherent motions, such as rotations, expansions, or translations. For displays containing only straight contours extending to the circumferences of the apertures, observers' reports of global motion direction were biased whenever the sampling of contour orientations was asymmetric relative to the direction of motion. Performance was improved by the presence of identifiable features, such as line ends or crossings, whose trajectories could be tracked over time. The reports of our observers were consistent with a pooling process involving a vector average of measures of the component of velocity normal to contour orientation, rather than with the predictions of the intersection-of-constraints analysis in velocity space.Air Force Office of Scientific Research (90-0175, 89-0016); National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research (BNS-8908426

    Does invariant recognition predict tuning of neurons in sensory cortex?

    Tuning properties of simple cells in cortical V1 can be described in terms of a "universal shape" characterized by parameter values which hold across different species. This puzzling set of findings begs for a general explanation grounded on an evolutionarily important computational function of the visual cortex. We ask here whether these properties are predicted by the hypothesis that the goal of the ventral stream is to compute for each image a "signature" vector which is invariant to geometric transformations, with the the additional assumption that the mechanism for continuously learning and maintaining invariance consists of the memory storage of a sequence of neural images of a few objects undergoing transformations (such as translation, scale changes and rotation) via Hebbian synapses. For V1 simple cells the simplest version of this hypothesis is the online Oja rule which implies that the tuning of neurons converges to the eigenvectors of the covariance of their input. Starting with a set of dendritic fields spanning a range of sizes, simulations supported by a direct mathematical analysis show that the solution of the associated "cortical equation" provides a set of Gabor-like wavelets with parameter values that are in broad agreement with the physiology data. We show however that the simple version of the Hebbian assumption does not predict all the physiological properties. The same theoretical framework also provides predictions about the tuning of cells in V4 and in the face patch AL which are in qualitative agreement with physiology data

    A survey of visual preprocessing and shape representation techniques

    Many recent theories and methods proposed for visual preprocessing and shape representation are summarized. The survey brings together research from the fields of biology, psychology, computer science, electrical engineering, and most recently, neural networks. It was motivated by the need to preprocess images for a sparse distributed memory (SDM), but the techniques presented may also prove useful for applying other associative memories to visual pattern recognition. The material of this survey is divided into three sections: an overview of biological visual processing; methods of preprocessing (extracting parts of shape, texture, motion, and depth); and shape representation and recognition (form invariance, primitives and structural descriptions, and theories of attention)

    Neural Dynamics of Motion Grouping: From Aperture Ambiguity to Object Speed and Direction

    A neural network model of visual motion perception and speed discrimination is developed to simulate data concerning the conditions under which components of moving stimuli cohere or not into a global direction of motion, as in barberpole and plaid patterns (both Type 1 and Type 2). The model also simulates how the perceived speed of lines moving in a prescribed direction depends upon their orientation, length, duration, and contrast. Motion direction and speed both emerge as part of an interactive motion grouping or segmentation process. The model proposes a solution to the global aperture problem by showing how information from feature tracking points, namely locations from which unambiguous motion directions can be computed, can propagate to ambiguous motion direction points, and capture the motion signals there. The model does this without computing intersections of constraints or parallel Fourier and non-Fourier pathways. Instead, the model uses orientationally-unselective cell responses to activate directionally-tuned transient cells. These transient cells, in turn, activate spatially short-range filters and competitive mechanisms over multiple spatial scales to generate speed-tuned and directionally-tuned cells. Spatially long-range filters and top-down feedback from grouping cells are then used to track motion of featural points and to select and propagate correct motion directions to ambiguous motion points. Top-down grouping can also prime the system to attend a particular motion direction. The model hereby links low-level automatic motion processing with attention-based motion processing. Homologs of model mechanisms have been used in models of other brain systems to simulate data about visual grouping, figure-ground separation, and speech perception.     Restricted ability to recover three-dimensional global motion from one-dimensional local signals: Theoretical observations

    AbstractRecovering 3D information from a 2D time-varying image is a vital task which human observers face daily. Numerous models exist which compute global 3D structure and motion on the basis of 2D local motion measurements of point-like elements. On the other hand, both experimental and computational research of early visual motion mechanisms emphasize the role of oriented (1D) detectors. Therefore, it is important to find out whether indeed 1D motion signals can serve as primary cues for 3D global motion computation. We have addressed this question by combining mathematical results and perceptual observations. We show that given the 2D-projected 1D instantaneous velocity field, it is mathematically impossible to discriminate rigid rotations from non-rigid transformations and/or to recover the rotation parameters. We relate this fact to existing results in cases where localized (point-like) cues are present, and to our own experiments on human performance in global motion perception when only 1D cues are given. Taken together, the data suggest a necessary role for localized information in early motion mechanisms and call for further physiological and psychophysical research in that direction

    Automated Design of Neural Network Architecture for Classification

    This Ph.D. thesis deals with finding a good architecture of a neural network classifier. The focus is on methods to improve the performance of existing architectures (i.e. architectures that are initialised by a good academic guess) and automatically building neural networks. An introduction to the Multi-Layer feed-forward neural network is given and the most essential properties for neural networks; there ability to learn from examples is discussion. Topics like traning and generalisation are treated in more explicit. On the basic of this dissuscion methods for finding a good architecture of the network described. This includes methods like; Early stopping, Cross validation, Regularisation, Pruning and various constructions algorithms (methods that successively builds a network). New ideas of combining units with different types of transfer functions like radial basis functions and sigmoid or threshold functions led to the development of a new construction algorithm for classification. The algorithm called "GLOCAL" is fully described. Results from these experiments real life data from a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are provided.The thesis was written so people from the industry and graduate students who are interested in neural networks hopeful would find it useful.Key words: Neural networks, Architectures, Training, Generalisation deductive and construction algorithms

    Neuron-level dynamics of oscillatory network structure and markerless tracking of kinematics during grasping

    Oscillatory synchrony is proposed to play an important role in flexible sensory-motor transformations. Thereby, it is assumed that changes in the oscillatory network structure at the level of single neurons lead to flexible information processing. Yet, how the oscillatory network structure at the neuron-level changes with different behavior remains elusive. To address this gap, we examined changes in the fronto-parietal oscillatory network structure at the neuron-level, while monkeys performed a flexible sensory-motor grasping task. We found that neurons formed separate subnetworks in the low frequency and beta bands. The beta subnetwork was active during steady states and the low frequency network during active states of the task, suggesting that both frequencies are mutually exclusive at the neuron-level. Furthermore, both frequency subnetworks reconfigured at the neuron-level for different grip and context conditions, which was mostly lost at any scale larger than neurons in the network. Our results, therefore, suggest that the oscillatory network structure at the neuron-level meets the necessary requirements for the coordination of flexible sensory-motor transformations. Supplementarily, tracking hand kinematics is a crucial experimental requirement to analyze neuronal control of grasp movements. To this end, a 3D markerless, gloveless hand tracking system was developed using computer vision and deep learning techniques. 2021-11-3
