    A PCA approach to the object constancy for faces using view-based models of the face

    The analysis of object and face recognition by humans attracts a great deal of interest, mainly because of its many applications in various fields, including psychology, security, computer technology, medicine and computer graphics. The aim of this work is to investigate whether a PCA-based mapping approach can offer a new perspective on models of object constancy for faces in human vision. An existing system for facial motion capture and animation developed for performance-driven animation of avatars is adapted, improved and repurposed to study face representation in the context of viewpoint and lighting invariance. The main goal of the thesis is to develop and evaluate a new approach to viewpoint invariance that is view-based and allows mapping of facial variation between different views to construct a multi-view representation of the face. The thesis describes a computer implementation of a model that uses PCA to generate example- based models of the face. The work explores the joint encoding of expression and viewpoint using PCA and the mapping between viewspecific PCA spaces. The simultaneous, synchronised video recording of 6 views of the face was used to construct multi-view representations, which helped to investigate how well multiple views could be recovered from a single view via the content addressable memory property of PCA. A similar approach was taken to lighting invariance. Finally, the possibility of constructing a multi-view representation from asynchronous view-based data was explored. The results of this thesis have implications for a continuing research problem in computer vision – the problem of recognising faces and objects from different perspectives and in different lighting. It also provides a new approach to understanding viewpoint invariance and lighting invariance in human observers

    Deep Representation-aligned Graph Multi-view Clustering for Limited Labeled Multi-modal Health Data

    Today, many fields are characterised by having extensive quantities of data from a wide range of dissimilar sources and domains. One such field is medicine, in which data contain exhaustive combinations of spatial, temporal, linear, and relational data. Often lacking expert-assessed labels, much of this data would require analysis within the fields of unsupervised or semi-supervised learning. Thus, reasoned by the notion that higher view-counts provide more ways to recognise commonality across views, contrastive multi-view clustering may be utilised to train a model to suppress redundancy and otherwise medically irrelevant information. Yet, standard multi-view clustering approaches do not account for relational graph data. Recent developments aim to solve this by utilising various graph operations including graph-based attention. And within deep-learning graph-based multi-view clustering on a sole view-invariant affinity graph, representation alignment remains unexplored. We introduce Deep Representation-Aligned Graph Multi-View Clustering (DRAGMVC), a novel attention-based graph multi-view clustering model. Comparing maximal performance, our model surpassed the state-of-the-art in eleven out of twelve metrics on Cora, CiteSeer, and PubMed. The model considers view alignment on a sample-level by employing contrastive loss and relational data through a novel take on graph attention embeddings in which we use a Markov chain prior to increase the receptive field of each layer. For clustering, a graph-induced DDC module is used. GraphSAINT sampling is implemented to control our mini-batch space to capitalise on our Markov prior. Additionally, we present the MIMIC pleural effusion graph multi-modal dataset, consisting of two modalities registering 3520 chest X-ray images along with two static views registered within a one-day time frame: vital signs and lab tests. These making up the, in total, three views of the dataset. We note a significant improvement in terms of separability, view mixing, and clustering performance comparing DRAGMVC to preceding non-graph multi-view clustering models, suggesting a possible, largely unexplored use case of unsupervised graph multi-view clustering on graph-induced, multi-modal, and complex medical data

    Tracking interacting targets in multi-modal sensors

    PhDObject tracking is one of the fundamental tasks in various applications such as surveillance, sports, video conferencing and activity recognition. Factors such as occlusions, illumination changes and limited field of observance of the sensor make tracking a challenging task. To overcome these challenges the focus of this thesis is on using multiple modalities such as audio and video for multi-target, multi-modal tracking. Particularly, this thesis presents contributions to four related research topics, namely, pre-processing of input signals to reduce noise, multi-modal tracking, simultaneous detection and tracking, and interaction recognition. To improve the performance of detection algorithms, especially in the presence of noise, this thesis investigate filtering of the input data through spatio-temporal feature analysis as well as through frequency band analysis. The pre-processed data from multiple modalities is then fused within Particle filtering (PF). To further minimise the discrepancy between the real and the estimated positions, we propose a strategy that associates the hypotheses and the measurements with a real target, using a Weighted Probabilistic Data Association (WPDA). Since the filtering involved in the detection process reduces the available information and is inapplicable on low signal-to-noise ratio data, we investigate simultaneous detection and tracking approaches and propose a multi-target track-beforedetect Particle filtering (MT-TBD-PF). The proposed MT-TBD-PF algorithm bypasses the detection step and performs tracking in the raw signal. Finally, we apply the proposed multi-modal tracking to recognise interactions between targets in regions within, as well as outside the cameras’ fields of view. The efficiency of the proposed approaches are demonstrated on large uni-modal, multi-modal and multi-sensor scenarios from real world detections, tracking and event recognition datasets and through participation in evaluation campaigns

    Hierarchical transfer learning for online recognition of compound actions

    Recognising human actions in real-time can provide users with a natural user interface (NUI) enabling a range of innovative and immersive applications. A NUI application should not restrict users’ movements; it should allow users to transition between actions in quick succession, which we term as compound actions. However, the majority of action recognition researchers have focused on individual actions, so their approaches are limited to recognising single actions or multiple actions that are temporally separated. This paper proposes a novel online action recognition method for fast detection of compound actions. A key contribution is our hierarchical body model that can be automatically configured to detect actions based on the low level body parts that are the most discriminative for a particular action. Another key contribution is a transfer learning strategy to allow the tasks of action segmentation and whole body modelling to be performed on a related but simpler dataset, combined with automatic hierarchical body model adaption on a more complex target dataset. Experimental results on a challenging and realistic dataset show an improvement in action recognition performance of 16% due to the introduction of our hierarchical transfer learning. The proposed algorithm is fast with an average latency of just 2 frames (66ms) and outperforms state of the art action recognition algorithms that are capable of fast online action recognition

    Bimanual movements are a subset ot human movements in which the two hands move together in order to do a task or imply a meaning A bimanual movement appearing in a sequence of images must be understood in order to enable computers to interact with humans in a natural way This problem includes two main phases, hand tracking and movement recognition. We approach the problem of hand tracking from a neuroscience point ot view First the hands are extracted and labelled by colour detection and blob analysis algorithms In the presence of the two hands one hand may occlude the other occasionally Therefore, hand occlusions must be detected in an image sequence A dynamic model is proposed to model the movement of each hand separately Using this model in a Kalman filtering proccss the exact starting and end points of hand occlusions are detected We exploit neuroscience phenomena to understand the beha\ tour of the hands during occlusion periods Based on this, we propose a general hand tracking algorithm to track and reacquire the hands over a movement including hand occlusion The advantages of the algorithm and its generality are demonstrated in the experiments.     Egocentric Vision-based Action Recognition: A survey

    [EN] The egocentric action recognition EAR field has recently increased its popularity due to the affordable and lightweight wearable cameras available nowadays such as GoPro and similars. Therefore, the amount of egocentric data generated has increased, triggering the interest in the understanding of egocentric videos. More specifically, the recognition of actions in egocentric videos has gained popularity due to the challenge that it poses: the wild movement of the camera and the lack of context make it hard to recognise actions with a performance similar to that of third-person vision solutions. This has ignited the research interest on the field and, nowadays, many public datasets and competitions can be found in both the machine learning and the computer vision communities. In this survey, we aim to analyse the literature on egocentric vision methods and algorithms. For that, we propose a taxonomy to divide the literature into various categories with subcategories, contributing a more fine-grained classification of the available methods. We also provide a review of the zero-shot approaches used by the EAR community, a methodology that could help to transfer EAR algorithms to real-world applications.     Computational Models for the Automatic Learning and Recognition of Irish Sign Language

    This thesis presents a framework for the automatic recognition of Sign Language sentences. In previous sign language recognition works, the issues of; user independent recognition, movement epenthesis modeling and automatic or weakly supervised training have not been fully addressed in a single recognition framework. This work presents three main contributions in order to address these issues. The first contribution is a technique for user independent hand posture recognition. We present a novel eigenspace Size Function feature which is implemented to perform user independent recognition of sign language hand postures. The second contribution is a framework for the classification and spotting of spatiotemporal gestures which appear in sign language. We propose a Gesture Threshold Hidden Markov Model (GT-HMM) to classify gestures and to identify movement epenthesis without the need for explicit epenthesis training. The third contribution is a framework to train the hand posture and spatiotemporal models using only the weak supervision of sign language videos and their corresponding text translations. This is achieved through our proposed Multiple Instance Learning Density Matrix algorithm which automatically extracts isolated signs from full sentences using the weak and noisy supervision of text translations. The automatically extracted isolated samples are then utilised to train our spatiotemporal gesture and hand posture classifiers. The work we present in this thesis is an important and significant contribution to the area of natural sign language recognition as we propose a robust framework for training a recognition system without the need for manual labeling
