    A Decision Tree Based on Spatial Relationships for Predicting Hotspots in Peatlands

    Predicting hotspot occurrence as an indicator of forest and land fires is essential in developing an early warning system for fire prevention.  This work applied a spatial decision tree algorithm on spatial data of forest fires. The algorithm is the improvement of the conventional decision tree algorithm in which the distance and topological relationships are included to grow up spatial decision trees. Spatial data consist of a target layer and ten explanatory layers representing physical, weather, socio-economic and peatland characteristics in the study area Rokan Hilir District, Indonesia. Target objects are hotspots of 2008 and non-hotspot points.  The result is a pruned spatial decision tree with 122 leaves and the accuracy of 71.66%.  The spatial tree has produces higher accuracy than the non-spatial trees that were created using the ID3 and C4.5 algorithm. The ID3 decision tree has accuracy of 49.02% while the accuracy of C4.5 decision tree reaches 65.24%

    Aplicación de la mineria de datos especiales basada en técnicas de agrupamiento al congestionamiento del tráfico vehicular en la Ciudad de Trujillo, Perú

    El presente estudio se basa en el análisis del tráfico vehicular en la red vial de la ciudad de Trujillo, con el propósito de detectar y/o diagnosticar el nivel de congestión en diversos puntos críticos con mayor afluencia de vehículos. Se empleó un diseño no experimental descriptivo, donde la técnica utilizada en la recolección de datos fue la observación directa, con fichas de registro alcanzadas por la oficina metropolitana de transporte de la municipalidad de Trujillo; realizándose con esto, el proceso de análisis de datos simulados con valores numéricos válidos y aleatorios en tiempo real, por medio de la construcción de un modelo computacional de aprendizaje no supervisado, empleando la metodología CRISPDM, específica para gestión y análisis de minería de datos espaciales. Para atender la simulación de la congestión de los diferentes puntos críticos se implementó un sistema de software, para determinar la clasificación de la congestión con los algoritmos k-means y dbscan; Se hizo la comparación de los algoritmos de agrupamiento k-means y dbscan para determinar la fiabilidad y la tendencia de organización de grupos o clusters validando de esta manera el modelo computacional, para lo cual se consideró las técnicas del acodamiento y del promedio Silhouette respectivamente. Con los resultados obtenidos desde el sistema de software implementado se logró clasificar diversos puntos críticos congestionados y la densidad del tráfico simulados en tiempo rea

    A Data-driven Methodology Towards Mobility- and Traffic-related Big Spatiotemporal Data Frameworks

    Human population is increasing at unprecedented rates, particularly in urban areas. This increase, along with the rise of a more economically empowered middle class, brings new and complex challenges to the mobility of people within urban areas. To tackle such challenges, transportation and mobility authorities and operators are trying to adopt innovative Big Data-driven Mobility- and Traffic-related solutions. Such solutions will help decision-making processes that aim to ease the load on an already overloaded transport infrastructure. The information collected from day-to-day mobility and traffic can help to mitigate some of such mobility challenges in urban areas. Road infrastructure and traffic management operators (RITMOs) face several limitations to effectively extract value from the exponentially growing volumes of mobility- and traffic-related Big Spatiotemporal Data (MobiTrafficBD) that are being acquired and gathered. Research about the topics of Big Data, Spatiotemporal Data and specially MobiTrafficBD is scattered, and existing literature does not offer a concrete, common methodological approach to setup, configure, deploy and use a complete Big Data-based framework to manage the lifecycle of mobility-related spatiotemporal data, mainly focused on geo-referenced time series (GRTS) and spatiotemporal events (ST Events), extract value from it and support decision-making processes of RITMOs. This doctoral thesis proposes a data-driven, prescriptive methodological approach towards the design, development and deployment of MobiTrafficBD Frameworks focused on GRTS and ST Events. Besides a thorough literature review on Spatiotemporal Data, Big Data and the merging of these two fields through MobiTraffiBD, the methodological approach comprises a set of general characteristics, technical requirements, logical components, data flows and technological infrastructure models, as well as guidelines and best practices that aim to guide researchers, practitioners and stakeholders, such as RITMOs, throughout the design, development and deployment phases of any MobiTrafficBD Framework. This work is intended to be a supporting methodological guide, based on widely used Reference Architectures and guidelines for Big Data, but enriched with inherent characteristics and concerns brought about by Big Spatiotemporal Data, such as in the case of GRTS and ST Events. The proposed methodology was evaluated and demonstrated in various real-world use cases that deployed MobiTrafficBD-based Data Management, Processing, Analytics and Visualisation methods, tools and technologies, under the umbrella of several research projects funded by the European Commission and the Portuguese Government.A população humana cresce a um ritmo sem precedentes, particularmente nas áreas urbanas. Este aumento, aliado ao robustecimento de uma classe média com maior poder económico, introduzem novos e complexos desafios na mobilidade de pessoas em áreas urbanas. Para abordar estes desafios, autoridades e operadores de transportes e mobilidade estão a adotar soluções inovadoras no domínio dos sistemas de Dados em Larga Escala nos domínios da Mobilidade e Tráfego. Estas soluções irão apoiar os processos de decisão com o intuito de libertar uma infraestrutura de estradas e transportes já sobrecarregada. A informação colecionada da mobilidade diária e da utilização da infraestrutura de estradas pode ajudar na mitigação de alguns dos desafios da mobilidade urbana. Os operadores de gestão de trânsito e de infraestruturas de estradas (em inglês, road infrastructure and traffic management operators — RITMOs) estão limitados no que toca a extrair valor de um sempre crescente volume de Dados Espaciotemporais em Larga Escala no domínio da Mobilidade e Tráfego (em inglês, Mobility- and Traffic-related Big Spatiotemporal Data —MobiTrafficBD) que estão a ser colecionados e recolhidos. Os trabalhos de investigação sobre os tópicos de Big Data, Dados Espaciotemporais e, especialmente, de MobiTrafficBD, estão dispersos, e a literatura existente não oferece uma metodologia comum e concreta para preparar, configurar, implementar e usar uma plataforma (framework) baseada em tecnologias Big Data para gerir o ciclo de vida de dados espaciotemporais em larga escala, com ênfase nas série temporais georreferenciadas (em inglês, geo-referenced time series — GRTS) e eventos espacio- temporais (em inglês, spatiotemporal events — ST Events), extrair valor destes dados e apoiar os RITMOs nos seus processos de decisão. Esta dissertação doutoral propõe uma metodologia prescritiva orientada a dados, para o design, desenvolvimento e implementação de plataformas de MobiTrafficBD, focadas em GRTS e ST Events. Além de uma revisão de literatura completa nas áreas de Dados Espaciotemporais, Big Data e na junção destas áreas através do conceito de MobiTrafficBD, a metodologia proposta contem um conjunto de características gerais, requisitos técnicos, componentes lógicos, fluxos de dados e modelos de infraestrutura tecnológica, bem como diretrizes e boas práticas para investigadores, profissionais e outras partes interessadas, como RITMOs, com o objetivo de guiá-los pelas fases de design, desenvolvimento e implementação de qualquer pla- taforma MobiTrafficBD. Este trabalho deve ser visto como um guia metodológico de suporte, baseado em Arqui- teturas de Referência e diretrizes amplamente utilizadas, mas enriquecido com as característi- cas e assuntos implícitos relacionados com Dados Espaciotemporais em Larga Escala, como no caso de GRTS e ST Events. A metodologia proposta foi avaliada e demonstrada em vários cenários reais no âmbito de projetos de investigação financiados pela Comissão Europeia e pelo Governo português, nos quais foram implementados métodos, ferramentas e tecnologias nas áreas de Gestão de Dados, Processamento de Dados e Ciência e Visualização de Dados em plataformas MobiTrafficB

    Extraction de relations spatio-temporelles à partir des données environnementales et de la santé

    Thanks to the new technologies (smartphones, sensors, etc.), large amounts of spatiotemporal data are now available. The associated database can be called spatiotemporal databases because each row is described by a spatial information (e.g. a city, a neighborhood, a river, etc.) and temporal information (e.g. the date of an event). This huge data is often complex and heterogeneous and generates new needs in knowledge extraction methods to deal with these constraints (e.g. follow phenomena in time and space).Many phenomena with complex dynamics are thus associated with spatiotemporal data. For instance, the dynamics of an infectious disease can be described as the interactions between humans and the transmission vector as well as some spatiotemporal mechanisms involved in its development. The modification of one of these components can trigger changes in the interactions between the components and finally develop the overall system behavior.To deal with these new challenges, new processes and methods must be developed to manage all available data. In this context, the spatiotemporal data mining is define as a set of techniques and methods used to obtain useful information from large volumes of spatiotemporal data. This thesis follows the general framework of spatiotemporal data mining and sequential pattern mining. More specifically, two generic methods of pattern mining are proposed. The first one allows us to extract sequential patterns including spatial characteristics of data. In the second one, we propose a new type of patterns called spatio-sequential patterns. This kind of patterns is used to study the evolution of a set of events describing an area and its near environment.Both approaches were tested on real datasets associated to two spatiotemporal phenomena: the pollution of rivers in France and the epidemiological monitoring of dengue in New Caledonia. In addition, two measures of quality and a patterns visualization prototype are also available to assist the experts in the selection of interesting patters.Face à l'explosion des nouvelles technologies (mobiles, capteurs, etc.), de grandes quantités de données localisées dans l'espace et dans le temps sont désormais disponibles. Les bases de données associées peuvent être qualifiées de bases de données spatio-temporelles car chaque donnée est décrite par une information spatiale (e.g. une ville, un quartier, une rivière, etc.) et temporelle (p. ex. la date d'un événement). Cette masse de données souvent hétérogènes et complexes génère ainsi de nouveaux besoins auxquels les méthodes d'extraction de connaissances doivent pouvoir répondre (e.g. suivre des phénomènes dans le temps et l'espace). De nombreux phénomènes avec des dynamiques complexes sont ainsi associés à des données spatio-temporelles. Par exemple, la dynamique d'une maladie infectieuse peut être décrite par les interactions entre les humains et le vecteur de transmission associé ainsi que par certains mécanismes spatio-temporels qui participent à son évolution. La modification de l'un des composants de ce système peut déclencher des variations dans les interactions entre les composants et finalement, faire évoluer le comportement global du système. Pour faire face à ces nouveaux enjeux, de nouveaux processus et méthodes doivent être développés afin d'exploiter au mieux l'ensemble des données disponibles. Tel est l'objectif de la fouille de données spatio-temporelles qui correspond à l'ensemble de techniques et méthodes qui permettent d'obtenir des connaissances utiles à partir de gros volumes de données spatio-temporelles. Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre général de la fouille de données spatio-temporelles et l'extraction de motifs séquentiels. Plus précisément, deux méthodes génériques d'extraction de motifs sont proposées. La première permet d'extraire des motifs séquentiels incluant des caractéristiques spatiales. Dans la deuxième, nous proposons un nouveau type de motifs appelé "motifs spatio-séquentiels". Ce type de motifs permet d'étudier l'évolution d'un ensemble d'événements décrivant une zone et son entourage proche. Ces deux approches ont été testées sur deux jeux de données associées à des phénomènes spatio-temporels : la pollution des rivières en France et le suivi épidémiologique de la dengue en Nouvelle Calédonie. Par ailleurs, deux mesures de qualité ainsi qu'un prototype de visualisation de motifs sont été également proposés pour accompagner les experts dans la sélection des motifs d'intérêts

    Join indices as a tool for spatial data mining

    Abstract. The growing production of maps is generating huge volume of data stored in large spatial databases. This huge volume of data exceeds the human analysis capabilities. Spatial data mining methods, derived from data mining methods, allow the extraction of knowledge from these large spatial databases, taking into account the essential notion of spatial dependency. This paper focuses on this specificity of spatial data mining by showing the suitability of join indices to this context. It describes the join index structure and shows how it could be used as a tool for spatial data mining. Thus, this solution brings spatial criteria support to non-spatial information systems
