    Network coding meets multimedia: a review

    While every network node only relays messages in a traditional communication system, the recent network coding (NC) paradigm proposes to implement simple in-network processing with packet combinations in the nodes. NC extends the concept of "encoding" a message beyond source coding (for compression) and channel coding (for protection against errors and losses). It has been shown to increase network throughput compared to traditional networks implementation, to reduce delay and to provide robustness to transmission errors and network dynamics. These features are so appealing for multimedia applications that they have spurred a large research effort towards the development of multimedia-specific NC techniques. This paper reviews the recent work in NC for multimedia applications and focuses on the techniques that fill the gap between NC theory and practical applications. It outlines the benefits of NC and presents the open challenges in this area. The paper initially focuses on multimedia-specific aspects of network coding, in particular delay, in-network error control, and mediaspecific error control. These aspects permit to handle varying network conditions as well as client heterogeneity, which are critical to the design and deployment of multimedia systems. After introducing these general concepts, the paper reviews in detail two applications that lend themselves naturally to NC via the cooperation and broadcast models, namely peer-to-peer multimedia streaming and wireless networkin

    A credit-based approach to scalable video transmission over a peer-to-peer social network

    PhDThe objective of the research work presented in this thesis is to study scalable video transmission over peer-to-peer networks. In particular, we analyse how a credit-based approach and exploitation of social networking features can play a significant role in the design of such systems. Peer-to-peer systems are nowadays a valid alternative to the traditional client-server architecture for the distribution of multimedia content, as they transfer the workload from the service provider to the final user, with a subsequent reduction of management costs for the former. On the other hand, scalable video coding helps in dealing with network heterogeneity, since the content can be tailored to the characteristics or resources of the peers. First of all, we present a study that evaluates subjective video quality perceived by the final user under different transmission scenarios. We also propose a video chunk selection algorithm that maximises received video quality under different network conditions. Furthermore, challenges in building reliable peer-to-peer systems for multimedia streaming include optimisation of resource allocation and design mechanisms based on rewards and punishments that provide incentives for users to share their own resources. Our solution relies on a credit-based architecture, where peers do not interact with users that have proven to be malicious in the past. Finally, if peers are allowed to build a social network of trusted users, they can share the local information they have about the network and have a more complete understanding of the type of users they are interacting with. Therefore, in addition to a local credit, a social credit or social reputation is introduced. This thesis concludes with an overview of future developments of this research work

    The evolutions veri ed in mobile devices capabilities (storage capacity, screen resolution, processor, etc.) over the last years led to a signi cant change in mobile user behavior, with the consumption and creation of multimedia content becoming more common, in particular video tra c. Consequently, mobile operator networks, despite being the target of architectural evolutions and improvements over several parameters (such as capacity, transmission and reception performance, amongst others), also increasingly become more frequently challenged by performance aspects associated to the nature of video tra c, whether by the demanding requirements associated to that service, or by its volume increase in such networks. This Thesis proposes modi cations to the mobile architecture towards a more e cient video broadcasting, de ning and developing mechanisms applicable to the network, or to the mobile terminal. Particularly, heterogeneous networks multicast IP mobility supported scenarios are focused, emphasizing their application over di erent access technologies. The suggested changes are applicable to mobile or static user scenarios, whether it performs the role of receiver or source of the video tra c. Similarly, the de ned mechanisms propose solutions targeting operators with di erent video broadcasting goals, or whose networks have di erent characteristics. The pursued methodology combined an experimental evaluation executed over physical testbeds, with the mathematical evaluation using network simulation, allowing the veri cation of its impact on the optimization of video reception in mobile terminalsA evolução veri cada nas características dos dispositivos moveis (capacidade de armazenamento, resolução do ecrã, processador, etc.) durante os últimos anos levou a uma alteração signi cativa nos comportamentos dos utilizadores, sendo agora comum o consumo e produção de conteúdos multimédia envolvendo terminais móveis, em particular o tráfego vídeo. Consequentemente, as redes de operador móvel, embora tendo também sido alvo constante de evoluções arquitecturais e melhorias em vários parâmetros (tais como capacidade, ritmo de transmissão/recepção, entre outros), vêemse cada vez mais frequentemente desa adas por aspectos de desempenho associados à natureza do tráfego de vídeo, seja pela exigência de requisitos associados a esse serviço, quer pelo aumento do volume do mesmo nesse tipo de redes. Esta Tese propôe alterações à arquitetura móvel para a disseminação de vídeo mais e ciente, de nindo e desenvolvendo mecanismos aplicáveis à rede, ou ao utilizador móvel. Em particular, são focados cenários suportados por IP multicast em redes móveis heterogéneas, isto é, com ênfase na aplicação destes mecanismos sobre diferentes tecnologias de acesso. As alterações sugeridas aplicam-se a cenários de utilizador estático ou móvel, sendo este a fonte ou receptor do tráfego vídeo.     Aplicação de modelos ocultos de Markov na distribuição de vídeo sob demanda

Existem algoritmos desenvolvidos com o objetivo de reduzir o consumo de banda e reduzir a carga de processamento do servidor durante a distribuição de vídeo. Estes algoritmos baseiam-se m majoritariamente na popularidade dos vídeos existentes na biblioteca do servidor. Algoritmos mais recentes exploram a capacidade de armazenamento do dispositivo do usuário para alocar segmentos iniciais dos vídeos, o que permite ao servidor a distribuição mais eficiente explorando melhor a capacidade de transmissão multicast da rede além de proporcionar ao usuário início imediato do vídeo requisitado. Nesta dissertação propõe-se um método de distribuição de vídeo capaz de prever a categoria do conteúdo que será acessado pelo usuário através de um Modelo Oculto de Markov (HMM, Hidden Markov Model), de modo a aumentar a eficiência na distribuição do vídeo. O desempenho do método foi avaliado através de um simulador baseado em eventos discretos desenvolvido em linguagem C. As analises comparam o impacto de diferentes taxas de requisições recebidas pelo servidor de vídeo, diferentes padrões de popularidade dos vídeos e para diferentes capacidades de armazenamento do dispositivo do usuário. Os resultados indicam que o uso do método pode diminuir significativamente o consumo de banda na rede IP durante a transmissão de vídeo quando comparado com métodos existentes. Com a aplicação do método proposto e possível atender um maior numero de requisições com o mesmo hardware, o que pode ser visto também como uma redução de custo de implementação para servidores VoD. Hidden Markov Models.Abstract: The use of video-on-demand applications have already overcome current Internet traffic and continues with a strong growth prospect in the coming years. There are algorithms designed to reduce bandwidth consumption and reduce the server processing load during video distribution. These algorithms are mostly based on the popularity of existing videos in the server library. More recent algorithms explore the storage capacity of the user's device to allocate initial segments of the videos, which allows the server to more efficiently distribute by exploiting the network's multicast transmission capability, in addition to providing the user with immediate video start-up requested. In this study we propose a video distribution method capable of predicting the category of content that will be accessed by the user through a Hidden Markov Model (h M m ) in order to increase efficiency in video distribution. The performance of the method was evaluated through a discrete event-based simulator developed in C language. The analyzes compare the impact of different rates of requests received by the video server, different patterns of video popularity and different storage capacities of the user's device. The results indicate that the use of the method can significantly reduce bandwidth consumption in the IP network during video transmission when compared to existing methods. With the application of the proposed method it is possible to meet a larger number of requests with the same hardware, which can also be seen as a reduction of implementation cost for VoD servers. Different generations of communication technology have evolved. This had led to new research for communication of large volumes of data in different transmission media and the design of different communication protocols. Another direction of research concerns the secure and error-free communication between the sender and receiver despite the risk of the presence of an eavesdropper. For the communication requirement of a huge amount of multimedia streaming data, a lot of research has been carried out in the design of proper overlay networks.     Video streaming over the internet using application layer multicast

    Multicast is a very important communication paradigm. However, the deployment of multicast at IP layer is very slow, due to development and deployment issues such as ISPs' lack of incentives to update routers and inter-operability among multicast routing protocols. Application Layer Multicast (ALM) is a good alternative, where participating peers organize themselves into a logical overlay network atop the physical links and data is \tunneled" to each other via unicast links. The distinctive feature between IP multicast and ALM is that in ALM, data replication and forwarding functionalities are performed by participating peers (a.k.a. end systems), rather than the routers in Internet Protocol (IP) multicast. This fundamental difference enables ALM to be able to circumvent the development and deployment issues of IP multicast, by exploiting the resources (e.g., CPU cycles, storage, and access bandwidth) at the edge of the network. Nevertheless, it also raises other challenges, as peers are not as stable as routers since they may join and depart the on-going session at will. In this thesis, we address some of the challenges and they are summarized as follows: First, most current P2P or ALM streaming systems are equipped with a non-scalable membership management algorithm, greatly hindering their applicability to large-scale implementations over the Internet: they either rely on a central entity to handle group membership, or simply assume that all group members are visible to each other and flooding is the main mechanism used to disseminate membership-related updates to all participating group members. This implies that they are only applicable to small groups. Second, one of ALM's prominent features, flexility, has not been fully exploited: moving the multicast functionalities from lower layer (IP layer) to higher layer (Application layer) can greatly facilitate the integration of Quality-of-Service (QoS) support. The end-to-end philosophy states that it is better to leave those functionalities to higher layers because the heterogeneity among users' requirements can be handled much better by end users, rather than the network. However, QoS, and in particular, reliability has not been thoroughly addressed in existing ALM schemes. Third, admission control algorithms are essential to the success of any ALM system, due to the fact that in ALM, each peer acts as both a client as well as a server. On the other hand, the heterogeneity among peers, in terms of their computational power, storage capacity, and access bandwidth, further complicates the design of a good admission control. Several contributions are made to address the aforementioned research challenges, and they are outlined as follows: The first contribution is a devised gossip-based membership management algorithm that is able to collect and disseminate membership-related information under high rate of churn, using relatively low communication overheads. The second contribution is a reliability-centric multicast tree construction algorithm that greatly enhance peers' perceived reliability. The third contribution is a QoS-aware tree construction algorithm that accommodates the heterogeneity among peers, such as access bandwidth, network distance, and reliability. The last contribution is the identification of the admission control problem in this overlay video streaming

    Progressive introduction of network softwarization in operational telecom networks: advances at architectural, service and transport levels

    Technological paradigms such as Software Defined Networking, Network Function Virtualization and Network Slicing are altogether offering new ways of providing services. This process is widely known as Network Softwarization, where traditional operational networks adopt capabilities and mechanisms inherit form the computing world, such as programmability, virtualization and multi-tenancy. This adoption brings a number of challenges, both from the technological and operational perspectives. On the other hand, they provide an unprecedented flexibility opening opportunities to developing new services and new ways of exploiting and consuming telecom networks. This Thesis first overviews the implications of the progressive introduction of network softwarization in operational networks for later on detail some advances at different levels, namely architectural, service and transport levels. It is done through specific exemplary use cases and evolution scenarios, with the goal of illustrating both new possibilities and existing gaps for the ongoing transition towards an advanced future mode of operation.
