    Online control of AC/AC converter based SHEPWM technique

    Conventional online control of AC/AC converter controlled by the selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation technique (SHEPWM) is based on storing the offline calculated switching angle values in a form of lookup table. Then the required switching pattern of certain modulation index (M) is searched through the lookup table. This methodology suffers from limited system flexibility. This paper introduces a novel implementation scheme based on real-time calculation of the required SHEPWM switching pattern with linear control of the fundamental voltage component magnitude based on curve fitting technique for the exact switching angle trajectories. The accuracy of the derived polynomials is evaluated by calculating converter performance parameters using the approximated switching angles solutions obtained from the introduced method and the exact switching angles solutions. Detail of the introduced methodology is presented. Simulation and experimental results have been carried out to confirm the validity of the introduced algorithm

    Feedback Control of an Exoskeleton for Paraplegics: Toward Robustly Stable Hands-free Dynamic Walking

    This manuscript presents control of a high-DOF fully actuated lower-limb exoskeleton for paraplegic individuals. The key novelty is the ability for the user to walk without the use of crutches or other external means of stabilization. We harness the power of modern optimization techniques and supervised machine learning to develop a smooth feedback control policy that provides robust velocity regulation and perturbation rejection. Preliminary evaluation of the stability and robustness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through the Gazebo simulation environment. In addition, preliminary experimental results with (complete) paraplegic individuals are included for the previous version of the controller.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Control System Magazine.     This dissertation provides a nonlinear optimization algorithm for the long term control of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) to remove overloads and voltage violations by optimized control of power flows and voltages in the power network. It provides a control strategy for finding the long term control settings of one or more UPFCs by considering all the possible settings and all the (N-1) topologies of a power network.     Optimal control design for robust fuzzy friction compensation in a robot joint

    This paper presents a methodology for the compensation of nonlinear friction in a robot joint structure based on a fuzzy local modeling technique. To enhance the tracking performance of the robot joint, a dynamic model is derived from the local physical properties of friction. The model is the basis of a precompensator taking into account the dynamics of the overall corrected system by means of a minor loop. The proposed structure does not claim to faithfully reproduce complex phenomena driven by friction. However, the linearity of the local models simplifies the design and implementation of the observer, and its estimation capabilities are improved by the nonlinear integral gain. The controller can then be robustly synthesized using linear matrix inequalities to cancel the effects of inexact friction compensation. Experimental tests conducted on a robot joint with a high level of friction demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy observer-based control strategy for tracking system trajectories when operating in zero-velocity regions and during motion reversals

    Real Time Animation of Virtual Humans: A Trade-off Between Naturalness and Control

    Virtual humans are employed in many interactive applications using 3D virtual environments, including (serious) games. The motion of such virtual humans should look realistic (or ‘natural’) and allow interaction with the surroundings and other (virtual) humans. Current animation techniques differ in the trade-off they offer between motion naturalness and the control that can be exerted over the motion. We show mechanisms to parametrize, combine (on different body parts) and concatenate motions generated by different animation techniques. We discuss several aspects of motion naturalness and show how it can be evaluated. We conclude by showing the promise of combinations of different animation paradigms to enhance both naturalness and control

    Machine Learning for Fluid Mechanics

    The field of fluid mechanics is rapidly advancing, driven by unprecedented volumes of data from field measurements, experiments and large-scale simulations at multiple spatiotemporal scales. Machine learning offers a wealth of techniques to extract information from data that could be translated into knowledge about the underlying fluid mechanics. Moreover, machine learning algorithms can augment domain knowledge and automate tasks related to flow control and optimization. This article presents an overview of past history, current developments, and emerging opportunities of machine learning for fluid mechanics. It outlines fundamental machine learning methodologies and discusses their uses for understanding, modeling, optimizing, and controlling fluid flows. The strengths and limitations of these methods are addressed from the perspective of scientific inquiry that considers data as an inherent part of modeling, experimentation, and simulation. Machine learning provides a powerful information processing framework that can enrich, and possibly even transform, current lines of fluid mechanics research and industrial applications.Comment: To appear in the Annual Reviews of Fluid Mechanics, 202

    Data Mining Technology for Structural Control Systems: Concept, Development, and Comparison

    Structural control systems are classified into four categories, that is, passive, active, semi-active, and hybrid systems. These systems must be designed in the best way to control harmonic motions imposed to structures. Therefore, a precise powerful computer-based technology is required to increase the damping characteristics of structures. In this direction, data mining has provided numerous solutions to structural damped system problems as an all-inclusive technology due to its computational ability. This chapter provides a broad, yet in-depth, overview in data mining including knowledge view (i.e., concept, functions, and techniques) as well as application view in damped systems, shock absorbers, and harmonic oscillators. To aid the aim, various data mining techniques are classified in three groups, that is, classification-, prediction-, and optimization-based data mining methods, in order to present the development of this technology. According to this categorization, the applications of statistical, machine learning, and artificial intelligence techniques with respect to vibration control system research area are compared. Then, some related examples are detailed in order to indicate the efficiency of data mining algorithms. Last but not least, capabilities and limitations of the most applicable data mining-based methods in structural control systems are presented. To the best of our knowledge, the current research is the first attempt to illustrate the data mining applications in this domain
