The Digitalisation of African Agriculture Report 2018-2019
An inclusive, digitally-enabled agricultural transformation could help achieve meaningful livelihood improvements for Africaâs smallholder farmers and pastoralists. It could drive greater engagement in agriculture from women and youth and create employment opportunities along the value chain. At CTA we staked a claim on this power of digitalisation to more systematically transform agriculture early on. Digitalisation, focusing on not individual ICTs but the application of these technologies to entire value chains, is a theme that cuts across all of our work. In youth entrepreneurship, we are fostering a new breed of young ICT âagripreneursâ. In climate-smart agriculture multiple projects provide information that can help towards building resilience for smallholder farmers. And in women empowerment we are supporting digital platforms to drive greater inclusion for women entrepreneurs in agricultural value chains
Quantify resilience enhancement of UTS through exploiting connect community and internet of everything emerging technologies
This work aims at investigating and quantifying the Urban Transport System
(UTS) resilience enhancement enabled by the adoption of emerging technology
such as Internet of Everything (IoE) and the new trend of the Connected
Community (CC). A conceptual extension of Functional Resonance Analysis Method
(FRAM) and its formalization have been proposed and used to model UTS
complexity. The scope is to identify the system functions and their
interdependencies with a particular focus on those that have a relation and
impact on people and communities. Network analysis techniques have been applied
to the FRAM model to identify and estimate the most critical community-related
functions. The notion of Variability Rate (VR) has been defined as the amount
of output variability generated by an upstream function that can be
tolerated/absorbed by a downstream function, without significantly increasing
of its subsequent output variability. A fuzzy based quantification of the VR on
expert judgment has been developed when quantitative data are not available.
Our approach has been applied to a critical scenario (water bomb/flash
flooding) considering two cases: when UTS has CC and IoE implemented or not.

CONSERVE: A framework for the selection of techniques for monitoring containers security
Context:\ua0Container-based virtualization is gaining popularity in different domains, as it supports continuous development and improves the efficiency and reliability of run-time environments.\ua0Problem:\ua0Different techniques are proposed for monitoring the security of containers. However, there are no guidelines supporting the selection of suitable techniques for the tasks at hand.\ua0Objective:\ua0We aim to support the selection and design of techniques for monitoring container-based virtualization environments.\ua0Approach: First, we review the literature and identify techniques for monitoring containerized environments. Second, we classify these techniques according to a set of categories, such as technical characteristic, applicability, effectiveness, and evaluation. We further detail the pros and cons that are associated with each of the identified techniques.\ua0Result:\ua0As a result, we present CONSERVE, a multi-dimensional decision support framework for an informed and optimal selection of a suitable set of container monitoring techniques to be implemented in different application domains.\ua0Evaluation:\ua0A mix of eighteen researchers and practitioners evaluated the ease of use, understandability, usefulness, efficiency, applicability, and completeness of the framework. Smartphone-based interventions in bipolar disorder : Systematic review and meta-analyses of efficacy. A position paper from the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) Big Data Task Force
Background: The clinical effects of smartphone-based interventions for bipolar disorder (BD) have yet to be established. Objectives: To examine the efficacy of smartphone-based interventions in BD and how the included studies reported user-engagement indicators. Methods: We conducted a systematic search on January 24, 2022, in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, APA PsycINFO, and Web of Science. We used random-effects meta-analysis to calculate the standardized difference (Hedges' g) in pre-post change scores between smartphone intervention and control conditions. The study was pre-registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021226668). Results: The literature search identified 6034 studies. Thirteen articles fulfilled the selection criteria. We included seven RCTs and performed meta-analyses comparing the pre-post change in depressive and (hypo)manic symptom severity, functioning, quality of life, and perceived stress between smartphone interventions and control conditions. There was significant heterogeneity among studies and no meta-analysis reached statistical significance. Results were also inconclusive regarding affective relapses and psychiatric readmissions. All studies reported positive user-engagement indicators. Conclusion: We did not find evidence to support that smartphone interventions may reduce the severity of depressive or manic symptoms in BD. The high heterogeneity of studies supports the need for expert consensus to establish ideally how studies should be designed and the use of more sensitive outcomes, such as affective relapses and psychiatric hospitalizations, as well as the quantification of mood instability. The ISBD Big Data Task Force provides preliminary recommendations to reduce the heterogeneity and achieve more valid evidence in the field.Peer reviewe
On Oracles for Automated Diagnosis and Repair of Software Bugs
This HDR focuses on my work on automatic diagnosis and repair done over the past years. Among my past publications, it highlights three contributions on this topic, respectively published in ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (TOSEM), IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE) and Elsevier Information & Software Technology (IST). My goal is to show that those three contributions share something deep, that they are founded on a unifying concept, which is the one of oracle. The first contribution is about statistical oracles. In the context of object-oriented software, we have defined a notion of context and normality that is specific to a fault class: missing method calls. Those inferred regularities act as oracle and their violations are considered as bugs. The second contribution is about test case based oracles for automatic repair. We describe an automatic repair system that fixes failing test cases by generating a patch. It is founded on the idea of refining the knowledge given by the violation of the oracle of the failing test case into finer-grain information, which we call a âmicro-oracleâ. By considering micro-oracles, we are capable of obtaining at the same time a precise fault localization diagnostic and a well-formed input-output specification to be used for program synthesis in order to repair a bug. The third contribution discusses a novel generic oracle in the context of exception handling. A generic oracle states properties that hold for many domains. Our technique verifies the compliance to this new oracle using test suite execution and exception injection. Rural Development Programmes implied an increasing
focus on monitoring and evaluation. Against the highly
diversified experience with regard to implementation
of policy instruments the Common Monitoring
and Evaluation Framework has been set up by the EU
Commission as a strategic and streamlined method of
evaluating programmesâ impacts. Its indicator-based
approach mainly reflects the concept of a linear,
measure-based intervention logic that falls short of
the true nature of RDP operation and impact capacity
on rural changes. Besides the different phases of the
policy process, i.e. policy design, delivery and evaluation,
the regional context with its specific set of challenges
and opportunities seems critical to the understanding
and improvement of programme performance.
In particular the role of local actors can hardly
be grasped by quantitative indicators alone, but has
to be addressed by assessing processes of social
innovation. This shift in the evaluation focus underpins
the need to take account of regional implementation
specificities and processes of social innovation as
decisive elements for programme performance.
