    Enabling dCache to use preexistent mass storage systems

    A mesura que la investigació depèn cada vegada més dels computadors, l'emmagatzematge de dades comença a convertir-se en un recurs escàs per als projectes, i suposa una gran part del cost total. Alguns projectes intenten resoldre aquest problema emprant emmagatzament distribuït. És doncs necessari que alguns centres proveeixin de grans quantitats d'emmagatzematge massiu de baix cost basat en cintes magnètiques. L'inconvenient d'aquesta solució és que el rendiment disminueix, particularment a l'hora de tractar-se de grans quantitats d'arxius petits. El nostre objectiu és crear un híbrid entre un sistema d'alt cost i rendiment basat en discs, i un de baix cost i rendiment basat en cintes. Per això, unirem dCache, un sistema d'emmagatzematge distribuït, amb Castor, un sistema d'emmagatzematge jeràrquic, creant sistemes de fitxers virtuals que contindran grans quantitats d'arxius petits per millorar el rendiment global del sistema.A medida que la investigación depende cada vez más de los computadores, el almacenamiento de datos comienza a ser un recurso escaso para los proyectos y supone una gran parte del coste total. Algunos proyectos intentan solucionar estos problemas usando almacenamiento distribuido, por ello es necesario que algunos centros proporcionen almacenamiento masivo de bajo coste basado en librerías de cintas. El inconveniente de esta solución reside en que el rendimiento disminuye, particularmente cuando se trata de grandes cantidades de archivos pequeños. Nuestro objetivo es crear un híbrido entre un sistema de almacenamiento de alto coste y rendimiento basado en discos, y otro de bajo coste y rendimiento basado en cintas. Para ello uniremos dCache, un sistema de almacenamiento distribuido, con Castor, un sistema de almacenamiento jerárquico, creando así sistemas de archivos virtuales que contengan grandes cantidades de archivos pequeños para mejorar el rendimiento global del sistema.As modern research relies more and more on computers, data storage is becoming a scarce resource for research projects, as well as a large part of the cost. Some projects try to solve this problem by relying on distributed data storage. It is therefore necessary, for some centers, to provide massive amounts of lower cost storage based in tape libraries. The drawback to this approach is that performance decreases, particularly when dealing with large amounts of small files. Our goal is to create a hybrid between a high-cost high-performance disk drive pool array,and a lower-cost, not so high performance tape based library. To this end we will link dCache, a distributed storage system, to Castor, a hierarchical storage management system, while creating virtual file systems containing large amounts of small files to improve the overall performance of the system

    Cruiser and PhoTable: Exploring Tabletop User Interface Software for Digital Photograph Sharing and Story Capture

    Digital photography has not only changed the nature of photography and the photographic process, but also the manner in which we share photographs and tell stories about them. Some traditional methods, such as the family photo album or passing around piles of recently developed snapshots, are lost to us without requiring the digital photos to be printed. The current, purely digital, methods of sharing do not provide the same experience as printed photographs, and they do not provide effective face-to-face social interaction around photographs, as experienced during storytelling. Research has found that people are often dissatisfied with sharing photographs in digital form. The recent emergence of the tabletop interface as a viable multi-user direct-touch interactive large horizontal display has provided the hardware that has the potential to improve our collocated activities such as digital photograph sharing. However, while some software to communicate with various tabletop hardware technologies exists, software aspects of tabletop user interfaces are still at an early stage and require careful consideration in order to provide an effective, multi-user immersive interface that arbitrates the social interaction between users, without the necessary computer-human interaction interfering with the social dialogue. This thesis presents PhoTable, a social interface allowing people to effectively share, and tell stories about, recently taken, unsorted digital photographs around an interactive tabletop. In addition, the computer-arbitrated digital interaction allows PhoTable to capture the stories told, and associate them as audio metadata to the appropriate photographs. By leveraging the tabletop interface and providing a highly usable and natural interaction we can enable users to become immersed in their social interaction, telling stories about their photographs, and allow the computer interaction to occur as a side-effect of the social interaction. Correlating the computer interaction with the corresponding audio allows PhoTable to annotate an automatically created digital photo album with audible stories, which may then be archived. These stories remain useful for future sharing -- both collocated sharing and remote (e.g. via the Internet) -- and also provide a personal memento both of the event depicted in the photograph (e.g. as a reminder) and of the enjoyable photo sharing experience at the tabletop. To provide the necessary software to realise an interface such as PhoTable, this thesis explored the development of Cruiser: an efficient, extensible and reusable software framework for developing tabletop applications. Cruiser contributes a set of programming libraries and the necessary application framework to facilitate the rapid and highly flexible development of new tabletop applications. It uses a plugin architecture that encourages code reuse, stability and easy experimentation, and leverages the dedicated computer graphics hardware and multi-core processors of modern consumer-level systems to provide a responsive and immersive interactive tabletop user interface that is agnostic to the tabletop hardware and operating platform, using efficient, native cross-platform code. Cruiser's flexibility has allowed a variety of novel interactive tabletop applications to be explored by other researchers using the framework, in addition to PhoTable. To evaluate Cruiser and PhoTable, this thesis follows recommended practices for systems evaluation. The design rationale is framed within the above scenario and vision which we explore further, and the resulting design is critically analysed based on user studies, heuristic evaluation and a reflection on how it evolved over time. The effectiveness of Cruiser was evaluated in terms of its ability to realise PhoTable, use of it by others to explore many new tabletop applications, and an analysis of performance and resource usage. Usability, learnability and effectiveness of PhoTable was assessed on three levels: careful usability evaluations of elements of the interface; informal observations of usability when Cruiser was available to the public in several exhibitions and demonstrations; and a final evaluation of PhoTable in use for storytelling, where this had the side effect of creating a digital photo album, consisting of the photographs users interacted with on the table and associated audio annotations which PhoTable automatically extracted from the interaction. We conclude that our approach to design has resulted in an effective framework for creating new tabletop interfaces. The parallel goal of exploring the potential for tabletop interaction as a new way to share digital photographs was realised in PhoTable. It is able to support the envisaged goal of an effective interface for telling stories about one's photos. As a serendipitous side-effect, PhoTable was effective in the automatic capture of the stories about individual photographs for future reminiscence and sharing. This work provides foundations for future work in creating new ways to interact at a tabletop and to the ways to capture personal stories around digital photographs for sharing and long-term preservation

    DASE: Document-Assisted Symbolic Execution for Improving Automated Test Generation

    Software testing is crucial for uncovering software defects and ensuring software reliability. Symbolic execution has been utilized for automatic test generation to improve testing effectiveness. However, existing test generation techniques based on symbolic execution fail to take full advantage of programs’ rich amount of documentation specifying their input constraints, which can further enhance the effectiveness of test generation. In this paper we present a general approach, Document-Assisted Symbolic Execution (DASE), to improve automated test generation and bug detection. DASE leverages natural language processing techniques and heuristics to analyze programs’ readily available documentation and extract input constraints. The input constraints are then used as pruning criteria; inputs far from being valid are trimmed off. In this way, DASE guides symbolic execution to focus on those inputs that are semantically more important. We evaluated DASE on 88 programs from 5 mature real-world software suites: GNU Coreutils, GNU findutils, GNU grep, GNU Binutils, and elftoolchain. Compared to symbolic execution without input constraints, DASE increases line coverage, branch coverage, and call coverage by 5.27–22.10%, 5.83–21.25% and 2.81–21.43% respectively.     An application of an ethernet based protocol for communication and control in automated manufacturing

    The exchange of information in the industrial environment is essential in order to achieve complete integration and control of manufacturing processes. At present the majority of devices present in the shop floor environment are still used as stand alone machines. They do not take advantage of the possibilities offered by a communication link to improve the manufacturing process. The subject of this research has been centered on the development of a simple, flexible and inexpensive support system for communication and control of manufacturing processes. As a result, a system with these features has been proposed and implemented on a simulated workcell. The area footwear manufacturing was chosen for modelling the workcell. The components of the manufacturing support system were developed using an object oriented approach which allowed modularity and software reuse. In order to achieve communication between the components, a communication protocol was developed following the process defined in the rapid protocol implementation framework. Ethernet was selected for implementing the lower levels of the protocol. Java, a new object oriented programming language used for the implementation of the system, showed that it could became a promising language for the implementation of manufacturing applications. In particular the platform independence feature of the language allows the immediate porting of applications to systems with different features. The manufacturing cell simulation had shown that the times associated with the manufacturing support system operations are compatible for its use in applications where the response times are in the order of one second

    The Design of a High-Integrity Disk Management Subsystem

    This dissertation describes and experimentally evaluates the design of the Logical Disk, a disk management subsystem that guarantees the integrity of data stored on disk even after system failures, while still providing performance competitive to other storage systems. Current storage systems that use the hard disk as storage medium, such as file systems, often do not provide sufficient protection against loss of data after a system failure. The designers of such systems are afraid that the amount of effort necessary for data protection would also result in too much loss of performance. The Logical Disk uses many different techniques to guarantee data integrity, including the support to execute multiple commands as one atomic action and avoiding `in-place updates' at all times. The techniques used to provide competitive performance include the technique of combining many, small write commands into one large, sequential, and thus efficient, write to disk, and clustering the data on disk continuously and automatically.Tanenbaum, A.S.     Investigation of spacecraft cluster autonomy through an acoustic imaging interferometric testbed

Separated spacecraft interferometers have been proposed for applications in sparse aperture radar or astronomical observations. Modeled after these systems, an integrated hardware and software interferometry testbed is developed. Utilizing acoustic sources and sensors as a simplified analog to radio or optical systems, the Acoustic Imaging Testbed's simplest function is that of a Michelson interferometer. Robot arms control the motion of microphones. Through successive measurements an acoustic image can be formed. On top of this functionality, a layered software architecture is developed. This software creates a virtual environment that mimics the command, control and communications functions appropriate to a space interferometer. Autonomous spacecraft agents interact within this environment as the logical equivalent of distributed satellites. Optimal imaging configurations are validated.
