Mathematical modelling in animal nutrition: a centenary review
A centenary review presents an opportunity to ponder over the processes of concept development and give thought to future directions. The current review aims to ascertain the ontogeny of current concepts, underline the connection between ideas and people and pay tribute to those pioneers who have contributed significantly to modelling in animal nutrition. Firstly, the paper draws a brief portrait of the use of mathematics in agriculture and animal nutrition prior to 1925. Thereafter, attention turns towards the historical development of growth modelling, feed evaluation systems and animal response models. Introduction of the factorial and compartmental approaches into animal nutrition is noted along with the particular branches of mathematics encountered in various models. Furthermore, certain concepts, especially bioenergetics or the heat doctrine, are challenged and alternatives are reviewed. The current state of knowledge of animal nutrition modelling results mostly from the discernment and unceasing efforts of our predecessors rather than serendipitous discoveries. The current review may stimulate those who wish for greater understanding and appreciation
The baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for different velocity definitions and implications for galaxy angular momentum
We study the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) at z=0 using 153 galaxies
from the SPARC sample. We consider different definitions of the characteristic
velocity from HI and H-alpha rotation curves, as well as HI line-widths from
single-dish observations. We reach the following results: (1) The tightest BTFR
is given by the mean velocity along the flat part of the rotation curve. The
orthogonal intrinsic scatter is extremely small (6%) and the best-fit slope is
3.85+/-0.09, but systematic uncertainties may drive the slope from 3.5 to 4.0.
Other velocity definitions lead to BTFRs with systematically higher scatters
and shallower slopes. (2) We provide statistical relations to infer the flat
rotation velocity from HI line-widths or less extended rotation curves (like
H-alpha and CO data). These can be useful to study the BTFR from large HI
surveys or the BTFR at high redshifts. (3) The BTFR is more fundamental than
the relation between angular momentum and galaxy mass (the Fall relation). The
Fall relation has about 7 times more scatter than the BTFR, which is merely
driven by the scatter in the mass-size relation of galaxies. The BTFR is
already the "fundamental plane" of galaxy discs: no value is added with a
radial variable as a third parameter.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
The PN.S Elliptical Galaxy Survey: the dark matter in NGC 4494
We present new Planetary Nebula Spectrograph observations of the ordinary
elliptical galaxy NGC 4494, resulting in positions and velocities of 255 PNe
out to 7 effective radii (25 kpc). We also present new wide-field surface
photometry from MMT/Megacam, and long-slit stellar kinematics from VLT/FORS2.
The spatial and kinematical distributions of the PNe agree with the field stars
in the region of overlap. The mean rotation is relatively low, with a possible
kinematic axis twist outside 1 Re. The velocity dispersion profile declines
with radius, though not very steeply, down to ~70 km/s at the last data point.
We have constructed spherical dynamical models of the system, including Jeans
analyses with multi-component LCDM-motivated galaxies as well as logarithmic
potentials. These models include special attention to orbital anisotropy, which
we constrain using fourth-order velocity moments. Given several different sets
of modelling methods and assumptions, we find consistent results for the mass
profile within the radial range constrained by the data. Some dark matter (DM)
is required by the data; our best-fit solution has a radially anisotropic
stellar halo, a plausible stellar mass-to-light ratio, and a DM halo with an
unexpectedly low central density. We find that this result does not
substantially change with a flattened axisymmetric model.
Taken together with other results for galaxy halo masses, we find suggestions
for a puzzling pattern wherein most intermediate-luminosity galaxies have very
low concentration halos, while some high-mass ellipticals have very high
concentrations. We discuss some possible implications of these results for DM
and galaxy formation.Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures. MNRAS, accepte
New Approach in Analytical Workflow to Accurately Characterize Heterogeneous Carbonates Using Non-Destructive Tracers
The main goal of this research is to compare and understand the efficiency of the numerical methods by comparing them with experimental data obtained from coreflood non-destructive tracer experiments on 6 different carbonate cores. Commercial simulation software is used to compare the numerical and experimental tracer concentration profiles and identifying the influencing parameters for history matching.
Six different types of carbonate cores 6 in.-length and 1.5 in. - diameter were obtained from different outcrop cores, with varying pore scale heterogeneity. 8 wt% potassium chloride (KCl) will be used as the non-destructive tracer in all the experiments. After characterizing the carbonates and tracer used in the experiments using standard coreflood procedures, concentration profiles were plotted against time (pore volume tracer injected). Computed tomography (CT) scan was performed on the core samples and single porosity based on the scans was used in the simulation studies. Detailed history matching and sensitivity studies have been carried out thoroughly via commercial simulator, to validate the experimental data and create an accurate model for further analysis.
The ultimate goal of this proposed research is to devise a new analytical workflow to analyze and interpret the effect of heterogeneity in the carbonates using non-destructive tracers and a numerical simulator
