    Exploring the relationship between intelligent transport system capability and business agility within the Bus Rapid Transit in South Africa

    Abstract: More than 65% of South Africans use public transportation to access educational, business, and financial activity. Mobility of individuals and products, particularly in metropolitan areas, suffers from delays, unreliability, absence of safety and air pollution. On the other hand, mobility demand is increasing quicker than South Africa's accessible infrastructure. Public transport services are poor in general, but this picture is transforming a high-quality mass transit system using high-capacity buses along dedicated bus lanes by implementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The BRT system appeared as the leading mode of urban passenger transit in the first decade of the twenty-first century after a few pioneering applications in the later portion of the twentieth century. In addition, Intelligent Transport System’s (ITS) advantages motivate both advanced and developing nations, such as South Africa, to invest in these techniques rather than spending enormous quantities on expanding the transportation network. Various stakeholders in government, academia and industry are in the process of presenting a shared vision of this new strategy and first practical steps should be taken towards this objective. Intelligent transport system capacity can provide better and more inclusive public transportation facilities to commuters through enhanced reliability and accessibility; to operators through efficiency gains; and to customers and operators in terms of cost-effectiveness and service provision affordability.     The following paper focuses on the qualitative description of the nation city of Singapore and its quantitative evaluation, which are part of an exploratory research for the ORCA and SciBas research group of the Francisco José de Caldas District University. Therefore, during the first semester of 2018, a conceptual review was made on the subject, proposing an action methodology whose snuyources are selected with the category of smart city in the context of sustainability.     Trabalho de projeto de mestrado, Engenharia Informática (Engenharia de Software) Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2020The fast-growing human population is causing an ever-increasing trend of hyper urbanisation and globalisation, along with the popularisation of private cars to commute, which contributes to several environmental and health problems, for instance, high lev els of noise, congestion, and pollution. Hence, most cities are facilitating and enhancing commuting travel, thus, fostering the development of transportation. Today’s urban transport networks are part of the daily lives of millions of people around the world, and in this era of digitalisation, servicising, and cashless economy the public transportation must also readjust. Therefore, contactless bank cards will make it reasonable to travel by public transport. It will be the first time in Portugal that a contactless bank card enables public transport to be accessed, travelled and charged. Such a solution would encourage the contactless debit or credit card to be an alternative to the proprietary transit card, thereby helping to enhance the usability and accessibility of public transport. With the launch of the contactless solution in public transport, a metropolitan area in Portugal will very well integrate a growing list of the world’s major cities such as London, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro and New York. Moreover, new passengers gradually shift from maintaining a private car to the use of public transport means, which allows a diminution on the emission of fuel gases, and a reduction of the global pollution. In addition to that, public transport operators pains also decrease because proprietary cards are handled and managed by financial institutions, enabling the transport agencies to turn their attention to the core of their business, like the multi-modal mass transit and fare calculation. This pioneering project in Portugal involved several stakeholders, including Card4B, Visa, and Unicre. Accordingly, the project aimed to provide an open-loop model with con tactless and post-paid payments to integrate into the existing operation of transportation ticketing. Finally, the developed solution supports contactless transactions, and followed the “Contactless Specifications for Payment Systems”. Successfully, the delivered solution was certified with an EMV Level 3 Certification for both Visa PayWave and MasterCard Contactless transactions

    Advances in crowd analysis for urban applications through urban event detection

    The recent expansion of pervasive computing technology has contributed with novel means to pursue human activities in urban space. The urban dynamics unveiled by these means generate an enormous amount of data. These data are mainly endowed by portable and radio-frequency devices, transportation systems, video surveillance, satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, and social networking services. This has opened a new avenue of opportunities, to understand and predict urban dynamics in detail, and plan various real-time services and applications in response to that. Over the last decade, certain aspects of the crowd, e.g., mobility, sentimental, size estimation and behavioral, have been analyzed in detail and the outcomes have been reported. This paper mainly conducted an extensive survey on various data sources used for different urban applications, the state-of-the-art on urban data generation techniques and associated processing methods in order to demonstrate their merits and capabilities. Then, available open-access crowd data sets for urban event detection are provided along with relevant application programming interfaces. In addition, an outlook on a support system for urban application is provided which fuses data from all the available pervasive technology sources and finally, some open challenges and promising research directions are outlined

    Employment Decentralization and Bus Rapid Transit in an Edge City Corridor: Veterans Boulevard in Greater New Orleans

    The continued decentralization of employment in U.S. regions has led to the emergence of large employment centers outside of traditional Central Business Districts. Edge Cities in particular, with their high office space densities, significantly influence surrounding land uses and regional commuting patterns. However, existing transit systems tend to be oriented to historic Central Business Districts and the level of service for transit in suburban areas remains considerably below that of central cities. Adequately serving suburban Edge Cities with transit is critical in maintaining and improving access to jobs by transit and mitigating automobile congestion. This study explores the suitability of a Bus Rapid Transit system along the Veterans Boulevard corridor in Greater New Orleans. It does this by analyzing residential and employment densities and existing commuting patterns along the corridor. It also explores the potential impact of BRT improvements on transit ridership in the corridor
