Firefly algorithm is one of the well-known swarm-based algorithms which gained popularity within a short time and has different applications. It is easy to understand and implement. The existing studies show that it is prone to premature convergence and suggest the relaxation of having constant parameters. To boost the performance of the algorithm, different modifications are done by several researchers. In this chapter, we will review these modifications done on the standard firefly algorithm based on parameter modification, modified search strategy and change the solution space to make the search easy using different probability distributions. The modifications are done for continuous as well as non-continuous problems. Different studies including hybridization of firefly algorithm with other algorithms, extended firefly algorithm for multiobjective as well as multilevel optimization problems, for dynamic problems, constraint handling and convergence study will also be briefly reviewed. A simulation-based comparison will also be provided to analyse the performance of the standard as well as the modified versions of the algorithm

Internet of Things (IoT) has gained its major insight in terms of its deployment and applications. Since IoT exhibits more heterogeneous characteristics in transmitting the real time application data, these data are vulnerable to many security threats. To safeguard the data, machine and deep learning based security systems has been proposed. But this system suffers the computational burden that impedes threat detection capability. Hence the feature selection plays an important role in designing the complexity aware IoT systems to defend the security attacks in the system. This paper propose the novel ensemble of spotted hyena with firefly algorithm to choose the best features and minimise the redundant data features that can boost the detection system's computational effectiveness.  Firstly, an effective firefly optimized feature correlation method is developed.  Then, in order to enhance the exploration and search path, operators of fireflies are combined with Spotted Hyena to assist the swarms in leaving the regionally best solutions. The experimentation has been carried out using the different IoT cloud security datasets such as NSL-KDD-99 , UNSW and CIDCC -001 datasets and contrasted with ten cutting-edge feature extraction techniques, like PSO (particle swarm optimization), BAT, Firefly, ACO(Ant Colony Optimization), Improved PSO, CAT, RAT, Spotted Hyena, SHO and  BOC(Bee-Colony Optimization) algorithms. Results demonstrates the proposed hybrid model has achieved the better feature selection mechanism with less convergence  time and aids better for intelligent threat detection system with the high performance of detection

Cipher strength mainly depends on the robust structure and a well-designed interaction of the components in its framework. A significant component of a cipher system, which has a significant influence on the strength of the cipher system, is the substitution box or S-box. An S-box is a vital and most essential component of the cipher system due to its direct involvement in providing the system with resistance against certain known and potential cryptanalytic attacks. Hence, research in this area has increased since the late 1980s, but there are still several issues in the design and analysis of the S-boxes for cryptography purposes. Therefore, it is not surprising that the design of suitable S-boxes attracts a lot of attention in the cryptography community. Nonlinearity, bijectivity, strict avalanche criteria, bit independence criteria, differential probability, and linear probability are the major required cryptographic characteristics associated with a strong S-box. Different cryptographic systems requiring certain levels of these security properties. Being that S- boxes can exhibit a certain combination of cryptographic properties at differing rates, the design of a cryptographically strong S-box often requires the establishment of a trade-off between these properties when optimizing the property values. To date, many S-boxes designs have been proposed in the literature, researchers have advocated the adoption of metaheuristic based S-boxes design. Although helpful, no single metaheuristic claim dominance over their other countermeasure. For this reason, the research for a new metaheuristic based S-boxes generation is still a useful endeavour. This thesis aim to provide a new design for 8 Ă— 8 S-boxes based on firefly algorithm (FA) optimization. The FA is a newly developed metaheuristic algorithm inspired by fireflies and their flash lighting process. In this context, the proposed algorithm utilizes a new design for retrieving strong S- boxes based on standard firefly algorithm (SFA). Three variations of FA have been proposed with an aim of improving the generated S-boxes based on the SFA. The first variation of FA is called chaotic firefly algorithm (CFA), which was initialized using discrete chaotic map to enhance the algorithm to start the search from good positions. The second variation is called globalized firefly algorithm (GFA), which employs random movement based on the best firefly using chaotic maps. If a firefly is brighter than its other counterparts, it will not conduct any search. The third variation is called globalized firefly algorithm with chaos (CGFA), which was designed as a combination of CFA initialization and GFA. The obtained result was compared with a previous S-boxes based on optimization algorithms. Overall, the experimental outcome and analysis of the generated S-boxes based on nonlinearity, bit independence criteria, strict avalanche criteria, and differential probability indicate that the proposed method has satisfied most of the required criteria for a robust S-box without compromising any of the required measure of a secure S-box

    Applied (Meta)-Heuristic in Intelligent Systems

    Get PDF
Engineering and business problems are becoming increasingly difficult to solve due to the new economics triggered by big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things. Exact algorithms and heuristics are insufficient for solving such large and unstructured problems; instead, metaheuristic algorithms have emerged as the prevailing methods. A generic metaheuristic framework guides the course of search trajectories beyond local optimality, thus overcoming the limitations of traditional computation methods. The application of modern metaheuristics ranges from unmanned aerial and ground surface vehicles, unmanned factories, resource-constrained production, and humanoids to green logistics, renewable energy, circular economy, agricultural technology, environmental protection, finance technology, and the entertainment industry. This Special Issue presents high-quality papers proposing modern metaheuristics in intelligent systems

    Vibration isolation under isolator-structure interaction

    Get PDF
This thesis analyses a general case of the vibration isolation (VI) problem, considering both a rigid and non-rigid supporting structures. The aim is to study changes on the behaviour of both systems isolators and supporting structure when the interaction phenomenon between them is considered. The influence of the VI task on the base response is evaluated. In addition, the effect of the base dynamics on the the VI and alignment problem is studied. The novel contribution to the knowledge of this thesis is formulation of a novel VI approach, which facilitates a holistic analysis of the problem considering all the systems involved on it. This approach is valid for any number of isolators and for any type of base structure. Moreover, different control objectives can be easily defined; evaluation of the interaction phenomenon on both the platform and base response for different VI techniques; demonstration of the importance of the isolator damping ratio on the influence that the VI task has on the base response; evaluation of the effects of the supporting structure dynamics on the VI and alignment problem when multiple isolators are involved; analysis of the Multiple-Input-Multiple-Ouput (MIMO) control strategy by comparison with the Single-Input-Single-Output (SISO) control strategy. This comparative has been made for the VI and alignment problem of multiple isolators on a non-rigid supporting structure and includes analysis of the effectiveness of the Coral Reefs Optimization algorithms to find nearly-optimal control gains in VI and alignment problems. Through the investigation made for this thesis, a number of significant results have been reached, which show the importance of the supporting structure dynamics on the VI and alignment task. Moreover, the interaction phenomenon, and its consequence on the base response, has been investigated experimentally. The results derived from this thesis conclude that, for most scenarios, the dynamics of the base affects the VI task. Also, the active VI (AVI) technique shows a greater influence on the base response than passive VI (PVI) technique, for most cases. It has been observed that the use of AVI technique can additionally be oriented to control vibrations of the supporting structure, while the VI task is developed. Significant differences have been found when multiple isolators are involved in the same task for the alignment and VI problem, depending on whether or not the dynamics of the base are considered. The best set of control gains for the rigid-support case (which lead to maximum damping ratio) differ from those obtained when the supporting structure is considered as a flexible system, for different cases analysed in this thesis. The MIMO control strategy has shown great improvement with respect to the use of the SISO control strategy. Also, the Coral Reefs Optimization algorithms have been demonstrated to be a suitable tool to find nearly-optimal solutions for this type of problems

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record Data availability: Data will be made available on request.Impacting systems are widely used in many engineering applications, such as self-propelled robots, energy harvesting and percussive drilling, which exhibit rich and complex nonlinear phenomena. Among these applications, predicting nonlinearities and estimating system parameters are of great interest of nonlinear dynamics research community. Backbone curve is an analytical tool that captures the frequencyamplitude dependence of nonlinear systems. In this paper, we estimate the impacting stiffness of a single-degree-of-freedom non-smooth dynamical system qualitatively by using the backbone curve. It was found that an increase of the impacting stiffness may lead to lowering the backbone curve. An adaptive differential evolution algorithm with the Metropolis criterion is proposed to identify the parameters of the impacting system quantitatively using experimental data, which are consistent with our theoretical predictions. Finally, the identified parameters are verified, and the limitations of the backbone curve are drawn. The nonlinear characteristics identification method studied in this paper could be extended to other vibro-impact systems and is potentially applicable to structural health monitoring and robotic sensing.European Union’s Horizon 202
